This is a novel of the gun. It tells the story of a hunter and competitive shooter who is pushed too far by evil men and deceived by government. It explores what happens when the line separating the professional and sporting use of firearms becomes blurred and deception collides with honor. A young man with an amazing ability as a competitive shooter attracts the attention of a stranger who offers him entry into a contest that seems like a dream come true; an event that will test his speed and accuracy against the best in the world. It proves, however, to be an encounter that will take him deeper into the world of the gun than he has ever been, where the entry fee is courage, the goal is survival, and he becomes the prize.
This book was a real departure for me; mainly because guns have never interested me. But I found it and the title and cover captured my attention; the blurb from the back further enticed me and I found a new author whose writing thrilled me.
The action was well-detailed and, as the book progressed, became more and more intense. I was totally and completely hooked and the book and it's sequel ~ Mandatory Reload ~ are favourites, still after a number of years.
Al Voth's credentials and knowledge are impeccable:
About the Author(from the back inside cover ~ 2002)
Al Voth, like many of his generation, grew up on a family farm and began a lifelong interest in firearms by hunting small game with a single shot .22 caliber rifle. After graduating from university with a degree in sociology, he began a career in law enforcement and has never left the field. This included work as a patrol officer and nine years of service on an Emergency Response Team. Along the way he has won numerous awards in rifle and handgun competition, usually building and modifying his own match guns in the process. He currently works at a forensic laboratory as a firearm and toolmark examiner and still shoots competitively and hunts as much as time permits.
In full admission, i am a gun nut who loves competitive shooting. So this book was up my alley. What i liked is the idea was plausible, the idea a elite government force would go to the competition world for cutting edge shooting (the competition world advances much faster than police or military in techniques, always looking for an edge.)
Book starts slow but picks right up with thrilling rescues and tense gunfights. Highly recommended.
