What do we do when we can’t interrupt a feeling? When we are sad day after day with no real reason why? When we are consumed with anger toward someone who wronged us as a child? When we are anxious about what will happen as our career hangs in the balance? When we are withdrawn after an argument with our spouse? As I tackle the huge topic of our emotional life, the rules have changed. Do we have control over feeling sad? Feeling angry? Feeling happy? If we can just stop thinking a thought, can we just stop feeling a feeling? In this Bible study, I would like to take a closer look at individual moments when Jesus and Father God and the Spirit all feel emotions. Because we were created by a God who feels, let's learn from Him … what is His response to sadness, anger, fear, or joy? Seeing God emote throughout Scripture will give us a new path forward. In each of these moments, I will cast a theological vision for our emotions and present scientific research that confirms what Scripture says is true. I believe there are steps we can take to experience our emotions more clearly and walk in greater awareness of our need for God. Together, we will learn to take these five steps in the face of overwhelming Notice them. Name them. Feel them. Share them. Resource them. No matter where you are in your emotional life, this book can open up to you the reality of how God sees our emotions. Get yourself a trustworthy group and go on this journey together. You won’t regret it!
This is a great study!!! I loved the study, videos and projects included it can be done alone but I think you’ll get more out of it if you do it in a group. This topic is not talked about enough in churches but is all throughout scripture. This will challenge you but if you’re open and vulnerable I truly believe will change your relationship with yourself and God. God created us to feel and when we go to Him with those feelings He promises comfort!
Emotions are a tool to unwind. Emotions intimately connect us to ourselves, others and God. Thus, allowing ourselves to experience them fully can be a pathway to greater connection.
For those who are numb or overwhelmed, a few simple steps can help identify and manage emotions. First, notice physical and emotional signals and precisely name each feeling. Next, allow yourself to feel your emotions fully, sharing them with a trusted community. Leaning into painful feelings can forge neural pathways for healing and stress relief over time. Negative feelings themselves aren't the problem, but an opportunity to identify where we are and seek help. The reward for stewarding feelings well is profound.
Doing the Bible study with others was more impactful for me than reading/listening to the book on my own! Beautiful conversations and opportunities to connect came about because of the videos and questions. I’m thankful for the heart that went into this topic because it is so important. I will continue to reflect on the practical steps and illustrations given. I think this is a process I’ll be working on every day of my life. I think this study is a good push into thinking and talking about things we face and don’t face and holding them up to God’s light so that we can be healed and more connected to one another and to Him. Thank you Jennie!
I felt like this in conjunction with the conversation cards was stronger than the stand alone book. I did find it a bit frustrating that the conversation cards were not included with a leader’s manual. This book would be especially helpful for people who tend to ignore their feelings and have difficulty expressing these feelings. It is an interesting read on the connection between feelings and God.
I recently completed this study and have learned so much. I realized that I had numbed myself out through many years of coping, controlling, or concealing instead of allowing myself the freedom to feel and to deal with my emotions in a healthy way. I learned that my emotions are not shameful or bad, but that ALL emotions are good and are given to us for a God given purpose. This has been a very helpful tool and a really great study.
I led this with a group of women from all walks of life and all levels of faith. We absolutely loved it so much ❤️ As a new believer, this gave me what I needed to keep filling my cup as I grow. Amazing study!! Highly recommend 👍🏻
Loved it! This study was recommended to me by my therapist. It’s practical and clear on how to apply it to life. I’m actually sad to be done with it, but have lots I can continue to work on with it.
