Jump in the passenger seat with the “Black Skirt” and get a first-hand look at what it’s like to work as an EMT. Ride along and experience everything from non-emergency wheelchair van transports to tragic search-and-rescues. Through all of the adventures, Liz maintains a relentlessly positive attitude and is sustained by her faith and a genuine love for her fellow man as she confidently carries out her duties all while wearing an ankle-length tactical skirt. Taken from the journal entries that she wrote while on the job, this book gives an intimate look into the thoughts and behind-the-scenes activities of a first responder.
As an EMT and nurse I love reading books written by other healthcare providers. This was an amazing read. I live in Pennsylvania where we have alot of Amish and Mennonite’s and I have never seen any working in healthcare. So to read her book and to hear how she got into it was amazing. Her journey from CNA to EMT and how she became an instructor and her experiences were wonderful to read.
I especially loved how her coworkers respected her religion. I also love how she was able to dress modestly and wasn’t judged for it
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though it is not much like many of the EMS related books one finds out there. As a 30+ year provider, I’m always interested in more details. This book doesn’t go in depth, and only looks at snippets, but somehow, it works. The author’s youthful exuberance and commentary on everyday occurrences were very much appreciated.
One note, though: I had hoped to see at least one photo of the infamous skirt.
Hop in for a ride along with EMT Liz (Boss) Lapp. Written in present tense, this memoir is a fascinating romp through the fire/EMS career of an intrepid Mennonite youngster. Careful though; after reading this you may find yourself wanting to sign up for the next available EMT class.
It was really informative and good. Only reason for not giving it a 5 star was the repetitive nature of some entries. Like the beginning of an entry has part of a story and then it would go into a little more description but with repeating what was already in the entry
