Within a lighthouse's walls, on the cusp between fire and storm, an old story begs to be heard, heeded, and understood.

Fiadh wears a stolen pelt that eats away her humanity, night by night. When she stumbles into the abandoned lighthouse with blood staining her hands, her teeth, she has almost given up hope.

A daughter of fire, Brenna's only wish is to flee her father's legacy and all who call her accursed. After a wolf attack awakens the superstitions of the townsfolk, she strikes a bargain with the Council in a desperate bid for her freedom.

A son of the sea, Túathal seeks answers the tide alone cannot give him. He is drawn to a fragile stranger who might be the only one who can unveil the mystery of his mother's disappearance.

Each tread in the footprints of the past, but what will it cost to tell a new story, to set old wrongs right?

Listen. I have a story to share.
Will you hear it howling in my eaves?
Feel it gusting down my chimney with a fine mist of rain?
See it in the gossamer ghosts flitting over the dust and ashes?
Scent it on the salt wind that whispers and wails with the voices of the lost?

I can only hope you will.

Moontide is a beautiful, and at times heart-wrenching story of three young people overcoming their traumas and learning not only to accept help, but also to offer it to others. Of these people realising that they aren't alone and don't have to be.

Mary's writing is striking, evoking such vivid imagery that every line just pulls you deeper into the story. There was never a moment where you would struggle with picturing a scene or the atmosphere of the story.

Our three protagonists, Fiadh, Brenna and Túathal are well fleshed out characters, each with their own distinct voice and feel to them. They are each trying to find their own answers, and in their search their destinies get tangled together. All of their growth within the story feels natural to each of them, with nothing feeling forced or plot convenient.

I absolutely adored the mythology woven into the story, and I have never read a story before which included Selkies! And the werewolf interpretation was also one that was quite different to the one that is usually present in fantasy.

Moontide is a beautiful debut novel of facing the traumas left to us by our parents and being able to move beyond them and find acceptance with others.

Moontide is a beautifully written story that follows three young people as they learn the truth of their respective pasts and how they grow with this knowledge.

Fiadh, Brenna, and Túathal find their lives intertwined after Fiadh finds refuge in an old lighthouse and Brenna is attacked by a wolf. Through chance encounters and visions of the past, they learn how the lighthouse came to be abandoned and why the ocean is so very angry at the coastal town of Sjavaba.

All three of the protagonists feel unique in their voices and descriptions, and their growth through the story was their own and felt very natural in response to the circumstances. Trauma comes in many forms, but they learn to help each other and accept help when needed.

The narrative descriptions are beautiful and perfectly balanced - enough to give you a real sense of the scenery or atmosphere, but never so much that it felt like it was dragging on and distracting from the plot. The inclusion of selkie mythology and fey creatures in general was well-handled, true to the original folklore (as far as I'm aware), but a lovely take on their society and traditions as well.

A short and intriguing read from debut author Mary Greenwood showing that we can all learn and grow from our traumas, especially with the help and love of friends.

This is a great story exploring how the actions of the past have impacts through generations. Mary writes characters that draw you into their lives. Very quickly, I was invested and needed to know how the threads would be untangled. A great fantasy world

Moontide is one of those rare reads. I often found myself lost in its rich poetic flow and beautiful imagery. The characters and their stories are deeply moving and the books deep roots in old mythology makes the story feel both refreshing and timeless.

For anyone longing for a story that isn’t just told to them and is something they can feel, Moontide is worth a read.

“Moontide” by Mary Greenwood is an enchanting and deeply moving novel that captures the reader’s imagination from the first page. Greenwood’s storytelling prowess shines through in this beautifully crafted tale, blending elements of mystery, romance, and self-discovery. Her writing is lyrical and evocative, painting vivid pictures that transport readers into the world she has created.

The characters in “Moontide” are compelling and richly developed, each with their own distinct voices and intricate backstories. Greenwood skillfully weaves their lives together, creating a tapestry of interconnected destinies that is both intricate and satisfying. The emotional depth and authenticity of the characters’ journeys make them easy to relate to and root for.

One of the novel’s strongest aspects is its atmospheric setting, which Greenwood brings to life with meticulous detail. The ebb and flow of the tides mirror the internal struggles and growth of the characters, adding a layer of symbolism that enriches the narrative. The plot is well-paced, with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep readers engaged and eager to see what happens next.

“Moontide” is not just a story but an experience, offering profound insights into love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit. Mary Greenwood’s ability to blend poignant moments with lyrical prose makes this book a standout. It’s a must-read for anyone who appreciates masterful storytelling and deeply human narratives.

Brenna has fiery red hair and fierce determination to match. She grew up in the lighthouse above the town. Her father bought the curse of terrible storms that destroyed the south wall of the village and stopped traders from coming.

The hatred of Brenna’s father grew until a mob took the punishment to be dealt out into their own hands. She had not long lost her mother and now her father was thrown from the lighthouse. The storms continued and the townsfolk decided that she was cursed too.

Breanna left the horrible memories in the lighthouse. As she gathered wood for her fire a white wolf attacked her.

Fiadh wears a stolen pelt and fears that she is losing her human self a little more each night when the wolf takes over her body.

Tuathal seeks answers and finds answers dwelling as spirits in the lighthouse.

Will all three learn how to understand the past, tolerate the intolerable hate of the townspeople, and find a way toward a happy future?

The story begins with hate and ends with love. What a wonderful book!

An excellent gentle read.
The story has a dreamlike quality with vaguely familiar folklore myth elements woven in, ethereal and yet intuitively understood and perfectly in place. This together with Mary's rather poetic storytelling style creates an easily immersive world full of rich description and the feel and wonder of things.
Note: for those readers who prefer their authors to simple state "it's a lighthouse", you may find Mary's style too invested in evoking a picture with feeling, but I feel much of the magic of this story would be lost without it.
The characters are rich, unique and loveable. They never disappoint with inconsistent or stupid plot driving actions/decisions.
The story surrounds old traumas and sorrows in a heartfelt way that is genuine but doesn't overwhelm.
This is a great book to relax into and be taken away to a lightly magical but familiar world, with a tale that weaves together smoothly and finishes with clean satisfaction.

This book is a surprise incorporating Celtic mythology and complex characters that draw you into their lives. The imagery Mary weaves into her stories requires a careful read. It is not a book to be rushed, rather enjoyed for its characters, settings and beauty. Mary has a lyrical style of writing that is as lilting as the Celtic languages.

A common comment I hear from friends who have read the book is “ Moontide surprised me that it was such a great read”. Unassuming like the author with hidden depths.

Moontide is an impressive debut novel. The characters are complex and compelling each with their own voice, history and moral struggles. The author does a great job of the 'show don't tell' form of world building that makes the world real and full of atmosphere. I loved the haunted feel of the lighthouse and town. Struggling against superstitious townsfolk, the environment and themselves, the history and mystery of the three protagonists comes together in a gripping and evocative climax. Well worth the read.

Great character development! I loved seeing the story unfold from multiple perspectives. The emotions of the storyline drew me in. My thoughts on the ending would contain spoilers so I will leave the star rating to speak to that. I hope there will be more from Mary Greenwood in the future after this amazing debut novel.

Moontide weaves magic, mystery and memory to an enchanting ending. Lyrically told and masterfully plotted, this book is a satisfying journey to free an imprisoned past. This novel could be finished in a seaside long weekend, but will be returned to again and again for its poetic symmetry. A refreshing, enrapturing read.

A wonderful read from beginning to end, with scenes described beautifully, great worldbuilding, and characters you'd want to root for. Everything was wrapped up nicely in the end, but with a lot of potential for the story to be expanded further. I would be really excited to read a sequel!

The characters are beautifully written, you connect with all three of the main characters quickly and root for them to overcome their struggles. They are so different and well developed, it's great seeing them overcome what was holding them back, haunting them.

it was pretty good. the flowery language got a bit too much at time but it was very immersive read with a pretty solid plot. i do wish we had gotten to see a little more of the aftermath but that doesn't detract too much from the overall enjoyment.

A great read! A few unexpected twists and turns. Definitely can see the inspiration for the title.

Loved the historical timeframe and merging of mythology. Not to mention the character development.

Being her first debut novel, I'm very much looking forward to more books written by Mary Greenwood in the future.
