The daughter of a half-Chinese duke and a lady fossil hunter, Lady Glory Cavendish is a free-spirited campaigner for justice. During her latest case involving a dastardly dognapping, Glory crosses paths with the handsome and mysterious Wei Chen, a master of healing and martial arts. Master Wei Chen has led a life of discipline focused on a single goal: avenging his murdered kin. His journey takes him to London where, by day, he treats opium users in his East End clinic and, by night, he secretly hunts the villain who destroyed his family. Yet for the first time, temptation distracts Wei: his spirited and lovely new pupil stirs dangerous needs in him. Desires that are forbidden between a shifu and his student…and between a commoner and a duke’s daughter.

As Wei and Glory’s slow-burn romance ignites into fiery passion, they are drawn into a web of betrayal and deceit. Torn between honor and desire, revenge and love, the pair must decide if they will let the past determine their future…or if they will fight the shadows for their chance at happily ever after.

Hi. I am shocked and offended that this book is not more popular than it is. This is one of my favorite books of ALL TIME. GRACE CALLAWAY IS AN ELITE AUTHOR NOTHING CAN CHANGE MY MIND. IM GONNA REVIEW ALL HER BOOKS SO THAT SHE GETS THE CLOUT SHE DESERVES. I FUCKING LOVE HER BOOKS BITCH

HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS BOOK WAS FUCKING AMAZING EVERY ROMANCE LOVER HAS TO READ THIS BOOK PLEASE PLEASE TAKE MY RECOMMENDATION!!! .

Edit 12-18-18 Just re-read this and still absolutely love it. I have to say, in terms of rating historical romance by steaminess, Grace Callaway gets first place. In my experience of reading hundreds of HR books by hundreds of authors, no one, NOT ONE SINGLE AUTHOR, EVEN MY FAVES LIKE KLEYPAS OR HOYT OR DARE, can write sex scenes like Callaway does. Hollly smoking moly, can this woman get it goiiinnnn. SHE IS ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF SEXINESS I JUST LOVE READING THESE BOOKS!! IT'S ROMANTIC WITHOUT GETTING CRASS OR CREEPY. IT'S STRAIGHT UP SEXY. AND AMBROSE? (lmao just realized i already have him later in the review, but he's in the top 5 of the sexiest hero. period.)

Dear goodness, that man...

5+++++ DAMN WHAT AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE STARS

I was not expecting to love this as much as I did. It's not super popular, and I feel like a lot of people did not like the first two. I DID NOT READ THE FIRST TWO BEFORE THIS ONE, BECAUSE I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN THE PLOT. IF ANY OF YOU FELLOW GR FRIENDS HAVE READ THE FIRST, AND WERE TURNED AWAY BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T LIKE IT, I BEG OF YOU TO GIVE THIS AUTHOR A SECOND CHANCE

Holy Damn, what a beautifully written, well paced novel. It's more on the serious and drama side, but does not have the normal ever present, unnecessary angst that usually accompanies these sorts of novels.

Absolutely brilliant, intriguing, and from the introduction to both their characters I could NOT put the book down. Ambrose and Marianne are very different from most HR MC's. Far from a bright eyed debutante, or an eccentric/ "different" heroine in her early 20's, or even a spinster, she is one of the more unique characters I have met in this genre. Stubborn, strong, fierce and confident, yet with a brimful of vulnerabilities, she was such a pleasure to read.

A lot of people have a problem with how closed off she was but really?? Do you expect her to be all happy and take people in with open arms with the horrid past she has? smh people will find anything to complain about these days. And it was not unreasonable at all! She was not annoyingly closed off. IMO it was the perfect amount, and she admitted her shortcomings! She is one of the strongest and vulnerable heroines I have ever met.
THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MODERN HISTORICAL ROMANCE NOVELS EVER, DO YOU HEAR ME?
THE. GREATEST.

And Ambrose?

Honestly, my NEW FAVORITE HERO. HOLY FUUUUCKKKKKKKK.

Nuff said.

The romance was very beautiful and well done

The sex was erotic, yet without being too vulgar or crude. Not to mention, the language used is accurate with the times. These days, we overlook that the language used in HR sex scenes are mostly because it's hard to write a good 19th century one when you're living in the 21st century. However, the sex was Soooooo soo good, it was honestly the perfect compliment to the plot and romance.

The plot and romance!: From the beginning, the mood is set as we are introduced the Marianne, an incredible strong woman desperate to find her missing daughter. Damn, she was such a complex character. I won't say anything more because I really don't want to give it away. I want people to experience this book without spoilers, as I did. The pacing was well done.

The mixture between Ambrose and Marianne's growing romance and the race to finding her child, as well as a ton of other shit that goes down is just amazing. It's really difficult to write a plot well with so much going on but the author does that so well! Not once did I think it was too messy or too much.

This book has easily become one of my favorites. I find it has similarities in theme with Elizabeth Hoyt's books. If you love Elizabeth Hoyt, I strongly suggest this book for you!

I actually read this book after I read the Hearts of Enquiry series which features the siblings of the H in this story, so I already "knew" the MCs of this one after devouring all of those tales. The H (Ambrose Kent) is the epitome of the dutiful man: both in his job and with respect to his family. Ambrose is the eldest son of a man who later remarried and had 4 more children with his 2nd wife which makes him pretty significantly older than the rest of his siblings and lands him in a father-figure role when their own father's mental state begins to deteriorate. Ambrose is now the true bread winner, and though his job as a Thames River Policeman pays little, he is considered one of the most honest and dedicated members with a high success rate in solving and preventing crime. All of his funds go towards the care of the family and upkeep of their modest home in the country, so he lives in Cheapside (which is as it sounds) and goes without when it comes to clothing and food for himself.

In contrast, the "incomparable" Lady Marianne Draven seems to have it all as a widow who was left with a nice home in London, a substantial annual allowance, and (best of all in her mind) the ability to do as she pleases. But under the surface of what most believe to be scandalous behavior, she is after only one thing -- the most important thing to her: finding her daughter who was taken from her as an infant by her abominable, now deceased husband and sold to a brothel madam. Marianne does not care what others think of her frequenting risque establishments, though she is not there to consort with male prostitutes as many seem to believe - she is there to find any information that will lead her to her beloved Primrose from whom she has been separated for 7 long years. When Ambrose and Marianne first meet (in earlier books in this series), there are sparks flying all over the place --- mostly of mutual disdain. But when an assignment is given to Ambrose that involves Marianne, they are unable to avoid the attraction that flares between them despite what appear to be their many differences. Will Marianne, a woman who has been let down by men all of her life, be able to finally trust Ambrose with the truth? Will Ambrose choose his duty over the woman who has captured his heart? And will either of them feel worthy of the other?

What I liked:
--- The chemistry between these two was off the charts from before the start (since they met in previous books)!
--- They were both "good" people in that they were moralistic and selfless
--- The story line was a good one with some twists and turns along the way

What I didn't like as much:
--- The descriptions of Ambrose were not very flattering - at one point, the author refers to him as a "lanky scarecrow" - makes it a little hard to picture the H in a sexy light (the cover art helped some there, though - hubba hubba! ;)
--- Lack of communication led to most of the issues in this one - even though it is clear that Marianne was wronged in the past and should be cautious, she took it a little too far and was a little too stubborn when it came to trusting Ambrose - by the time things were revealed to her that made things seem questionable, he had more than proven himself to her, so it seemed silly that she got as bent out of shape as she did without talking with him to get his side of the story

Overall, a very steamy and well-written HR that I am sure I will enjoy re-reading in the future!

Plot --- 4/5
Main Characters --- 4/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/5
Steam Level* --- 4/5
Language --- not egregious (mostly "heat of the moment" kinds of things)
Violence --- nothing graphic
POV --- 3rd

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

It's all about the Pleasure...

I met Marianne and Ambrose in The Duke Who Knew Too Much and I had to know more about them. Was Ambrose always so straight-laced? Could Marianne act the reckless and sophisticated jaded hoyden, so opposed to the sweet wife and mother I met? The answer on both counts is YES!

This story had a dark element to it and it made my skin crawl. I'm so glad that the main characters were as disgusted as I when it comes to this sexual proclivity . Luckily we don't have to 'see' it but we do get a glimpse into the mind of the pervert.

The storyline was engaging, the characters were interesting, and the love story between Marianne and Ambrose was a delight to witness. The mystery of who held Marianne's daughter was done extremely well and I had no idea until the announcement who it could be. Sure, I had a guess at who I thought could be the villain, but I never suspected this man and his level of depravity.

I'm definitely interested in going on exploring more of Grace Callaway's historical romances in the future. The heat level alone is enough to draw me back but admit to a slight hesitation. I've met some of the future characters as kids...now I have to 'see' them doing the nasty. 😳🙄😉

Onwards...

This is my favorite one in the series so far. I loved this story. Marianne fighting to find her stolen daughter and Ambrose is keeping an eye on her as she is suspected of nefarious aims.

Their clash in fire and sass and it just gets wilder from there.

Ever read a book and as soon as you were done you wanted to re-read it again? ...This is this story for me. Grace Callaway literally captivates me with her deep and complex characters and unique and suspenseful plots. Angst, lust and intrigue all in equal, perfect measure. This story was both a moving and heartwrenching nail-biter and one of the steamiest and most thrilling books I've read.

I've got two words for you: AMBROSE KENT.

I couldn't recommend this book more highly...find out for yourself and you can thank me later.

I just thought the characters were flat and i didnt connect with the story at all. I didnt feel anything for our heroine who had her child taken away from her nor did i care about our hero's super intriguing mission. I like how the storylines in each book work congruently so we get to see other characters from earlier books here.

the furniture in ambrose and marianne’s cottage after being christened thoroughly: 👀

current mood: pacing back and forth spring cleaning and strutting around the house to bejeweled on repeat (see: mikael arellano) ✨

i’m gonna be that bitch™ and be prepared to give y’all a multitude of reasons as to why ambrose kent is the fuckingg GOAT !!

pov: i’m a fiercely independent feminine woman who needs no man but if there’s one man whom i can trust to catch me during a round of trust falls, it would be none other than AMBROSE FUCKINGG KENT 🥺 man truly went ABOVE AND BEYOND and in selfless altruistic fashion, expected naught in return. urgh marry me and let me have all of your babies plzz? 💍🤱🏽

also, not only is he exceptional at being the fucking best policeman (ACAB exc. ambrose) but some of his internal thoughts from ch. 7, made me respect this man all the more bc unlike some rudely unsuspecting marquess from book one, i can rest assured knowing this river thames policeman has the absolute biggest dick in all of great britain; you can absolutely count on him to make you see stars/pleasure the living daylights out of you and you will still have enough stamina the next day to praise the lord for giving thus hunky virile beast of a man ☝🏽

highly recommend this if you enjoyed books like lady sophia’s lover or marrying winterborne and crave that same fiercely protective/stoic but mostly soft countenance/self-made hero archetype. in this book, you’ll get all of that and more 🔥

The third book in Callaway’s Mayhem in Mayfair Series. I started with her Heart of Inquiry Series where I first met Ambrose Kent, then doubled back to read the first series and I’m glad I did.

I really don’t know which of the books in the series is my favorite. I’m kinda partial to Gavin and Percy’s story, but since it’s a Hades and Persephone retelling, I feel like that’s just par for the course for me. Still, this one is a lot of fun and Ambrose is *such* a damn good guy. I do love me a Boy Scout with a dirty mouth.

This installment has a fairly involved conspiracy plot involving a pedophile (who luckily never is able to act on his perversion). Callaway does a decent job of balancing mystery and romance so that the mystery doesn’t overpower the lurve, but the mystery is still decent. It did get a little involved near the end, but it was fine.

As far as the sex? Oh yeah. Plenty of that. We’ve got wall-banging, carriage fun, pearl necklaces (thanks be to the one who reminded me of this phrase - I won’t embarrass her by calling her out 😂) and LOTS of French letters.

Get it, girl.

More character focused or plot focused? plot
How did the speed of the story feel? medium to fast

Cliffhanger: No, this ends with a happily ever after for the mains
Epilogue: Yes, within a year of the end of the story
Format: listened to an audiobook from the library (Hoopla)
Why I chose this book: I started the series forever ago and really enjoyed it and have been meaning to continue!
Mains: This is a M/F relationship
(Descriptions found at end of my review)

Should I read in order?
I’d say yes. There’s some overlapping character development and plot. I believe all Callaway’s books are set in the same ‘universe’ too.

Basic plot:
Marianne is doing everything she can to find her missing daughter. She gets involved with Ambrose after he’s sent to investigate her

Give this a try if you want:
- Regency (book 1 is 1817, this one is a touch after that)
- widow heroine
- policeman hero
- celibate hero (it’s been over a year)
- class difference
- heroine nurses hero back to health
- mystery to solve and villains to overcome
- higher steam – 6ish full scenes

Ages:
- I think the hero is 32, I didn’t catch heroine

First line:
Lady Marianne Draven studied the window display.

My thoughts:
So I am a touch conflicted about this one! I think my expectations were a bit too high for Ambrose after the first couple books. I did enjoy a lot about this one – but I also felt like they kept being apart from each other and it was bothering me. There was animosity between them within the first half and it took awhile for me to become attached to these mains. But eventually I did, and I really loved the way the latter half of this story played out. I am a bigger fan of character driven romances as well so the heavier mystery and villain aspect here took a bit of the romance away from me. But still I overall liked it and definitely will be reading more in the series. (I do think I had a bit of a narrator disconnect with this one which is weird because the same narrator did book 2 – I remember enjoying the narration of that one but I found her voice annoying this time. Maybe it was just a me thing!)

I keep reading Callaway's books because of the originality of her plots. Out of the series so far this was the best book. Marianne is a strong woman fighting for something very precious to her and behaving in questionable ways to cover her quests. Ambrose...ohhh Ambrose how I love thee. Ambrose is the epitome of what makes Callaway heroes so endearing and romantic. I loved loved loved him. He is honorable, true, loving, and so protective of Marianne. This book was also where the whole Kent family was introduced whose stories are some of my favorites in the Heart of Enquiry series. I really enjoy the way Callaway portrays this desperate love between her characters...and the intimate scenes despite being erotic is so romantically written that you can't help but enjoy it.

My favorite of the Callaway books so far. Kent and Marianne's story is something I come back to again and again.

I love Ambrose Kent
After reading a few of his siblings books I couldn’t wait to read his and Marianne’s HEA and it didn’t disappoint!
I loved that Marianne would bait Ambrose to the point where he’d lose control. Ambrose is almost too perfect and such an amazing hero. Marianne is strong and resourceful. UGH THESE TWO

the stuff
- french letters
- praise
- heroine w a gun
- sex in a dress shop
- lemme watch you masturbate
- “make me” kiss

I adore this hero. I love his mind. The rest of the book is just okay for me with endless peril that keeps me from enjoying the romance as much as I would like to have done.

Calloway writes super spicy Historical Romance with interesting characters so I am always happy to pick up her books.

5 Stars that are Actually 500 Stars—also why did I DNF this book initially? IT IS PERFECT.

Yes, yes. I am ashamed, appalled, and disappointed that I read two pages of this book last year and aggressively DNFed it. I shoved Grace Callaway to the side and said: “This writer ain’t for me, baby.” What a naïve fool I was. For upon giving this another go (prompted by my rediscovery of and devotion to Lorraine Heath after giving her another go)… I have found a HR writer I deeply, deeply appreciate and adore.

There are scores of summarizing reviews out there for this book, and it launches the rest of Callaway’s universe, so to speak, for good reason. It is everything I love about HR wrapped into one tidy package. It is a wonderfully paced story about two very extremely lovable characters. This book is devastating and fun and scary and creepy and exciting and hot.

Ambrose and Marianne are some of the best, most complex HR characters I’ve read in a long, long time (with the exception, now, of several other Callaway books since I've officially devoured her). I love this book. I think (pending that child kidnapping/unfulfilled pedophilia is not a trigger) everyone should read it. If you haven’t given Callaway a go, this is where to start.

Wow, just wow. It’s on my almost-top-ten list and will be staying there.

***some spoilers***

England 1820. DNF at 62%. It had possibilities.

Widowed Marianne's late sire was a country squire.
She did not trust or need anyone, with the exception
of friend Helena, married to a marquess. Mari had to
be in charge. Her outlook mirrored many HR heroes:
avoiding entanglements, putting one's own needs first
& manipulating others. She seemed to embrace and
prefer almost a male role.

Ambrose was a virile Thames River policeman with
integrity to spare.

Marianne was 'w/ child' when she wed her late spouse,
a baron. He sold her daughter! She had 3 purchaser
suspects. She played up to one suspect, who attempted
forced sex with her in a carriage. The hero rescued her.
The hero should have held/ comforted her, instead he had
sex w/ her. Maybe I'm alone in my view, but most women
could not shift emotional gears fast enough, to accommodate
the hero (in this instance)?

This is the best book in this series so far. Can't wait to read the next one
I was very curious to read this story als Ambrose and Marianne are more or less some kind of guideline through both Series.
I Loved Ambrose. He is one of the best heros ever and Marianne was a great heroine as well - very strong but nevertheless vulnerable and with some flaws.
Their relationship developed slowly although there was an instant attraction , Mrs. Callaway did not take the easy way and let them develop their feelings

I loved reading this story but although all books could be read as stand-alones I think one enjoys them more, reading these series in order

I have read all of Grace Callaway's books and this ranks up there with my favorites I love the relationship between Marianne and Ambrose. Marinne has been an enigma from the first introduction in Her Husband's Harlot and here we come to finally understand her. And Ambrose is one of those perfect romance Heros-strong, intensely passionate and over protective. Totally swoon-worthy. You will love this latest installment in the "Mayhem in Mayfair" series. And if you've never read them pick them up especially if you like your omance HOT and STEAMY!!

One of the most fantastic and wonderful heroes ever - so honorable and such a good guy!

Also loved the heroine, even though I don't normally go for her type (scandalous reputation, stunning beauty, seems like a cold b*tch, etc.).

Having encountered her in 2 other books though and seen the interaction between her and Ambrose in the last one, I was thankfully convinced to seek out Marianne's story next.

So glad I did!

Oh I love Ambrose!! I really liked him in the previous books and I swear there isn’t a single thing I could fault about him in this book!!
.
Marianne really had gone through a lot! What happened to Primrose was truly awful! And that whole scenario is just utterly heartbreaking, especially as it’s sadly still something that happens to this day! It was fascinating how much Marianne had put into her quest. How many steps she’d taken for her cause.
.
I really hated the scene at the dinner at Helena’s house. When Marianne said that to Ambrose it was horrible and made me feel so uncomfortable. I get it and I know why she did what she did but it still felt really hard to read.
.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It pretty much had everything I love in Historical Romances. The issue I once again had was some of the terminology 🙈 “‘Twas”, “”Tis”, “By Jove” - it made me think of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins! Also often it slipped into American slang and terminology. To sum it up the story was fantastic but the editing was a bit of a shambles at times. Which is such a shame because I truly believe if I’m the book, like in the previous ones, it would be edited correctly and the langue befitting of 1800s England, it would be one of the best series!

We finally find out why Marianne was on occasion flustered and looking as if something were wrong in the past books. Her whole life after her husband’s death as well as her marriage to him was a sham. She has been searching for her daughter Primrose since her husband’s death because he sold her to get back at Marianne!

This was by far my favorite book of the series not only because we finally find out what was going on with Marianne but because I’ve always liked her character. She never really cared what “the ton” thought of her and could never be bothered with all the gossip or uppity people that made up the ton. She knew who she was and knew that she didn’t really fit in with them.

You know from book 2 that Ambrose has feelings for Marianne but those feelings really come out in this book. Having been hired to follow her under false pretenses he learns the truth and helps look for Primrose. 5 stars

There are many hard things to read in this book. I'm a nursing mama and have a lot of trouble coping with missing child stories. But I had to review this one, because it had MY BOOK BOYFRIEND AMBROSE KENT. He is so hot; he is so honourable; he always makes sure the lady comes twice. I don't know what to tell you except that you should read him, and then read like every other Callaway book just to get glimpses of him very hotly solving other people's mysteries and hotly skulking around, being a hot detective.

Kobo+.4.5 stars. Mad About Series HRBC Challenge 2025. Tropes: Regency Romance, Romance/Mystery, Widow, Single Parent/child, Family/Friends, Class Difference.
*********************************************
MC's h. L.Marianne Draven, widow and wealthy, daughter taken by her husband and hidden from society. H. Ambrose Kent, eldest brother and breadwinner for the family, a river Policeman, wanting more investigative work t(Bow Street) to help support his family.
*****************************************************************************
Impression: Grace Callaway is very much into the details. Her plots are very well planned out and she is gifted in balancing the romance and the mystery. All the additional characters are well developed showing the different relationships that develop the reader's knowledge of the MC's. In this book we are looking at Marianne's past poor relationships with men and why she feels she can only rely on herself and her trusted male servant, Lugo and her maid Tilly. On the other hand Ambrose has a great sense of responsibility towards his father and siblings and great integrity as a river policmen. It you would describe Ambrose Kent in one word it would be : honorable. I enjoyed seeing the mystery unfold. There was some heartstopping moments when Marianne and Rosie were in danger.
I read all of the Heart of Inquiry books last year and was able to enjoy getting to know all of the Kents, so it was a great priviledge to read Marianne and Ambrose's story. I gave this 4.5 stars.
Plots Points:
Ambrose was trying to get extra work to help support his sisters and brother. He was making a decent wage as a River Police but it wasn't enough. His parent's didn't have much and his stepmother gone now and his father still grieving with dimentia like symptoms. The magistrate, Coyner said when there was a job he would give it to Kent, for extra money.

Ambrose had some friends, the Harteford's, Marquess and Marchioness that he did some work for, protecting their family and business interests. Helena's sister was marrying Gavin Hunt, gaming Hell owner.

Marianne was hunting down leads to find her missing daughter Rosie. Ambrose was hired to watch Marianne, he was told she was an anarchist. He found her breaking into a lawyer's office and the lawyer was dead. Bow Street was there to investigate and Ambrose helped Marianne and her (bodyguard) Lugo (from Jamaica) escape.

Marianne has an enemy. She found three leads to of who might have her daughter.

Ambrose has kissed Marianne on two occasions plus slept with her twice, so far. They are both attracted to each other and do the sparks fly! Ambrose has to put his family first. Marianne's only desire is for her daughter. Will love find a way?

Her Protector's Pleasure by Grace Callaway is an excellent historical romance. Ms. Callaway has provided readers with a well-written book populated with an outstanding cast of characters. Marianne is a widow known for her scandalous behavior. Ambrose is a member of the Thames River Policemen and trying to support is family on the little he makes. Marianne and Ambrose's tale is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to reading more from Grace Callaway in the future. Her Protector's Pleasure is book 3 of the Mayhem In Mayfair Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

2.5 stars.
This book started out quite well, and I liked the hero. He was not your typical upper class Regency hero, but a middle class battler trying to provide for his young siblings after their parents were gone.
Marianne, the heroine, was an interesting character who was searching for her illegitimate daughter.
A good start to this series.

I liked the dynamic between Ambrose and Marianne. She was independent, but it stemmed from mistrust. He genuinely wanted to help her and believed in her. The mystery was good too.

Este libro... Wow.

Maravillosa lectura 10/10, would recommend. Desde Maiden Lane que no me cruzaba con algo que me enganchara de esta manera

Her Protector's Pleasure
4 Stars

Lady Marianne Draven is desperate to locate her kidnapped daughter even though the search takes her to the darker and seedier parts of the city. A chance encounter with Thames River Policeman Ambrose Kent sets them on a collision course as Ambrose, a dedicated officer and family man, has recently accepted a risky assignment for the Bow Street Runners- a job that requires him to investigate Marianne, who is the one woman who gets under his skin like no other. Can Ambrose and Marianne overcome the many obstacles to their future together?

Series note: This is book #3 in the series. Both Marianne and Ambrose appear in books #1 and #2. Although their backstory is outlined in this installment, the previous books provide more details on their characters and are highly recommended.

Grace Callaway does not shy away from the darker side of the Regency whether it be the predators of the ton or the members of the criminal underworld. This installment is no exception as Ambrose's investigations and Marianne's search for her daughter highlight the gritty realities of life during the Regency - this is definitely not the glitz and glamor of the Bridgertons.

While Ambrose and Marianne have strong chemistry and their romance is satisfying, their pairing is lacking that extra something that would make them a spectacular couple. To begin with, Marianne is not an easy heroine to like. Yes, she is suffering, but there are a few moments where her intense self-absorption and even cruelty to others become inexcusable. Ambrose, in contrast, is an incredible hero and it is up for debate whether Marianne is worthy of him.

On a final note, I am reading this series out of order (gasp!) as I read the spin-off, Heart of Inquiry first. Consequently, my interest in the search for Marianne's daughter, Rosie, was not as intense as it could have been. This is not only due to prior knowledge of the outcome, but also because of the rather .

The next book is the last in this original series, and it will be interesting to see how Paul Fines, a complete rake, fares with the sweet and shy Charity.
