Two phenomenal books in one compilation. Fantastic! I love both books, and am thrilled they are together. See my reviews of each story below:
Ruin (Book 1)
A brooding bad boy, a demure young woman, a mysterious island... all the ingredients for a simply wonderful story. Jolie Vines has enchanted me with her many stories about the McRae clan. This book is a spin off from this world, as we once again are immersed in a part of the country visited previously. Thea is a good girl, who does what she's told and is a devoted daughter and granddaughter. A chance encounter with Struan opens Thea's eyes to see the world is not always as it seems. This story was simply perfect. Jolie crafted some amazing characters, with a twisted storyline that pulls you in quickly. There is a darker tone to this book than what I am used to with her previous books, and let me tell you - I am here for it. The ending has me literally begging for more. I cannot wait to see what she does with these new characters and this series overall. Excellent book.
Sin (Book 2)
Phenomenal. Darker and much more twisted than her other series, Jolie knocks it out of the park with this second installment of the Dark Island Scots series. Sin is dark, broody, sexy - everything you want out of an anti-hero. Thrust into a family he never knew existed, he takes the reigns as the leader of the group, shouldering the burden of not only keeping his new found family together, but keeping them alive as well. The story starts off right where book 1 finishes, with their rescue from the island. Distrustful of strangers, Sin looks towards finding solutions for their dilemma internally. This man. Such burdens he carries, the biggest one is self-sacrifice of his own wants and needs. One of those being the lass he leaves behind. Lottie is an islander and despite himself, he's grown fond of her. She refused to come along in book one. Her sudden appearance in book two raises his distrust as well as his desires. I love Lottie. Neglected, abused and yet still so kind and thoughtful. Forced into a situation due to her father, she's keeping big secrets. Secrets that land us into a simply fantastic story. There is so much mystery overarching in this story. Who is after this band of brothers (and Cassie)? What will happen next? Will Sin overcome his need to control everything and follow his heart? This series had me cheering, yelling out, groaning in frustration and swooning. I particularly am intrigued how this one ended. I adore these misfit characters and truly cannot wait to see what adventures/dangers come along next.
