I had a lot of plans entering my senior year of college-- dealing with Archer Copeland in any capacity was most definitely not on that list. The cocky quarterback and I have been at odds since last year when he posed naked for one of my art classes. Okay, so he was wearing a towel, but really, that barely even counts. Apparently, he enjoyed how uncomfortable the whole situation made me and decided that messing with me was his new favorite past time.
Fast forward to now.
My art professor has just assigned us a two-week project that we have to partner with a volunteer from the football team to complete. And of course, Archer being the a-hole that he is, thinks he’ll have a good laugh by giving me no choice but to partner with him. After all, who says no to the guy who took our losing team all the way to the championship game in a single season?
I’ll tell you who… No one.
Well, except for me. I seem to be the only person on campus not completely enamored by his good looks and incredible talent. Simply put, I have bigger things to focus on- like landing an internship for one of the most prestigious design firms in the country. And no one, not even Archer Copeland, is going to get in my way.
Problem is, Archer is a hard man to say no to. Especially when he has you pinned to a wall, kissing you like you’re the freshest damn water he’s ever tasted and he’s seconds away from dying of dehydration.
Yeah, I think it’s safe to say things just got a little complicated.

“I spent an entire year trying to stay away from her”
“…reject things purposely because they weren’t football related…Anything and everything that could potentially keep me from my goals…”
“Rory is not the goal. She only complicates it.”
“I’m not messing with you, Rory. I don’t have the time or the energy or the desire to lead someone on simply because I think I can. I flirt with you because I like the way you react to it. I insisted on being on your project because the thought of any of my other teammates getting to work with you so closely drove me absolutely fucking nuts. And I asked you to dinner because even though I don’t want to want you, I do…”
“…I remind myself of all the reasons I stayed away from her in the first place, but it all seems juvenile and unnecessary now. Is she a distraction? Abso-fucking-lutely. But not in the way I expected her to be. In fact, I played maybe my best game ever on Saturday…”
“So are you two like a thing?” Jen puffs out her chest, like this will somehow get Archer’s attention. I have to stifle a laugh when he barely even glances at her. “We are, actually.” Archer holds up our joined hands as if that puts the question to bed.”
“He smiles wider. “…Look, we don’t have to put some label on it, but let’s agree that until we decide otherwise, you are not to see anyone else and I won’t either…”
“Then, hours after waking up with her in my bed, I had another girl in my arms.”
“You guys act like she was my girlfriend and I cheated on her or something. We weren’t together.” It’s a lie. I know it and they know it….Even if we weren’t official, I stood outside of that party with Rory and agreed not to see anyone else while we were figuring things out.”
“I panicked,” I admit, my voice rising. “I panicked and I’m sorry.” “You panicked?” She snorts without humor. “You panicked to the point that you found a woman, brought her to a place you knew I’d be, and then proceeded to make out with her right in front of me. And you expect me to believe this bullshit?…” I didn’t realize how ridiculous it actually was until hearing her repeat it back to me just now. ”
“Do you want to know the reason I panicked? The reason I went to such ridiculous lengths to push you away?” My hands are on her face now, forcing her to look at me. “Because I realized that I’m in love with you. I’ve never felt this way before and it scares the shit out of me, but there it is. I love you, Rory. I’m in love with you.”
She’s a sceptic from the start. Literally judges him without reason throughout the book. That, and reaching their goals, are the basis of almost every conversation they have.
“I have had one goal from that day on, get my degree and graduate with an internship…Not a chance in hell am I going to let anything get in my way now, especially not some sleazy college boy who only wants what’s beneath my clothes.”
Eventually she caves. Then:
…I [heroine] watch in horror at the scene that seems to unfold in front of me in slow motion. Archer touches the side of her face. Seconds later, his hand slides around her back, pulling her closer. And then, just moments before his lips touch hers, he looks up and meets my gaze, like he wants to make sure I’m watching before he runs my heart straight through a fucking meat grinder.”
“Archer had his tongue down another girl’s throat two hours after I left his bed…”
“I’m sorry,” I repeat. “And what exactly are you sorry for, Archer?” She grimaces like it physically pains her to say my name. “For leading me on? For playing me? For using me for some sick game? Or for making me watch you stick your tongue down another girl’s throat because you were too pussy to end it like a man?”
“…If he’s telling the truth and his actions were solely driven by panic, how long until he pulls a stunt like that again? How long until he breaks my heart a second time?”
“Maybe the reason I so easily believed that he would hurt me that way is because I wanted him to. It was clear he was putting on a show that he wanted me to see. And instead of insisting he tell me the truth, I forced myself to believe that he really was that horrible of a person and that he duped me.”
Six months later they’re engaged. She has her internship. He gets drafted. I might’ve blinked away a few tears.
Meh. Quite predictable. The usual story of the promise of football and the shy art student. Both don’t want a serious relationship because they think it would distract them from their career. But he’s relentless and obsessed by her so he pursue her just to have cold feet once they had sex, and he manages to humiliate her making out with a girl just the morning after they have sex. He doesn’t want to end like his dad who would give up his career to be with him and his mother. ANd he’s scared his love for the heroine would make him fail. This lasts one week, then he realizes he was wrong and can’t live without her so he tells her he love her and after a couple of days they kiss and make up. Really? The whole thing was quite boring because he acts like a person with double personality. Even if he had cold feel, humiliating her like that was unnecessary and wrong. He didn’t show a bit of respect and consideration for her feelings, no matter if he was scared. And his apology lasts five seconds. Dude. Can it.
We spent 85% of this book watching this man pining and being a cinnamon roll only for him to have a complete character assassination the second he realizes he has feelings?? And THEN he gives the most half-ass apology I’ve ever seen and she just FORGIVES him?? Be so fucking for real!!!! I’m actually fuming 🤬
Add in the fact that she literally orgasms just from him looking at her vagina (I wish I was joking), this is potentially the worst book I’ve ever read.
The Art of Falling by Melissa Toppen is an enemy to lovers, close proximity slow burn college romance. It kept me coming back for more and more.
Both Rory and Archer are at college focusing on their dreams. They have interacted once or twice prior to this art project that they are forced to be partners in. Over the long chapters, we get their connection established, and create the bond we all love and hope for in a romance book.
I did find a couple topics repetitive but overall, I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the slow burn, the dialogue, and the back and forth between Archer and Rory. The friendships displayed in this book was fun and quirky. It made me wish I had these kinds of friendships in college.
✔️ College Sports Romance ✔️ Enemies to Lovers ✔️ He's the Star QB and she's the quiet Art Student ✔️ A Heart Melting Slow burn ride that was so worth every moment 😍😍
🅼🆈 🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆:
I'M STILL ALL MELTED, FLOATING ON A CLOUD OF ROMANCE WITH HEARTS IN MY EYES. 💖 Ahhh.. Where do I even begin with this one. Firstly, after all the dark reads that I've read, this one was such a breath of fresh, sweet air that has left me smiling and wanting to find myself a Archer Copeland too. 😘😘
Rory is the quiet but smart student who's very clear about her goals and she has everything mapped from her going to college to interning at the most coveted Laboe, the best in designing. Love or any kind of distraction have absolutely no place in her life.
Archer is so similar in his sharp focus for his career just like the girl he secretly admires and likes but decides it's best not to pursue her for wanting no diversion from his plan of football career.
But fate definitely has other plans or rather Archer Copeland takes matter into his own hands when he somehow makes himself the partner in Rory's upcoming art project.😈
Rory hates Archer because she thinks he's an absolute manwhore and floats on a cloud of his own ego. She finds him utterly insufferable and now detests the fact that she'd have to see his face for her projects.
This two had me from the get go first because of their personalities. I really liked both of their characters so much for how focused they are and crystal clear in what they want. Even though Rory hates Archer and what she thinks he stands for, yet I found it very amusing in how Archer could easily rile her up.
Ahhh.. Their moments together absolutely melted me. Getting to feel and witness the hard shell slowly cracking and a bond that was been built without them realising it.
I have to say Archer and Rory gave me butterflies in my tummy kinda feeling with their chemistry. Their first kiss I felt is what sweet romance is made of. 💕🥵🔥
Ahhhh... I'm so not over these two... Loved freaking loved this one.💖💖💖💖
Archer transferred schools to come make the football team better than what it was.
He is an amazing QB. You can ask anyone and they will tell you he lives and breathes football. He puts in the work to be as great as he is.
Rory is an art major. She does not like Archer at all. Especially after he was the model she had to paint last year for her class and he has messed with her ever since.
Ever since Archer was the painting model for her class he has not been able to stop thinking about her. He flirts with her and says things because he likes how she reacts to it.
He tries to stay away from her because he doesn’t want a distraction and he knows she would definitely be one.
Well Rory has to draw someone again for class and Archer took it upon himself to get them paired up again.
He knows she doesn’t like him but he plans to completely change her mind on how she sees him.
While they have their drawing sessions they ask each other questions and Rory starts to think that she was wrong about what she thought of Archer.
The team has an away game and Rory’s best friend is going and Rory agrees to go. It’s her first college football game.
Archer asks her to have dinner with him after his game. She fights it but gives in and when they walk back to his room he ends up kissing her. He can’t hold back any longer.
They kinda start seeing each other but Rory is having a hard time believing that he is actually attracted to her.
They finally sleep together and the next morning when he wakes up he literally freaks out (because he realizes he loves her) and leaves her in his bed.
Insert heart break💔
At this point I had tears in my eyes because Archer fought so hard for her to see him differently and she did and then he broke it.
Will he win back his girl, or is it too late?

Slow-burn isn't always my thing but Melissa does it so well! Witty banter ✅ Repressed feelings ✅ Sexual tension ✅
Rory is an art student and her next assignment is to draw a subject over a period of time to see how your perception of them changes as you get to know them. Simple. Except the football team has been recruited and the one guy Rory hates has requested to be her partner. Archer is everything wrong with men: cocky, arrogant, a womaniser, and loves messing with people, specifically her. And now she's forced to spend time alone with him.
I really thought this was going to be an opposites attract enemies-to-lovers but I was wrong. We quickly see how similar Rory and Archer are. They're both driven, hard-working, and unwilling to let anything, or anyone, get in their way. They had great flirty banter from the get go and the sexual tension made me so excited I squealed. I loved the build but boy did they get in their own way. There's also some last act drama that made me so angry I had to set my kindle down for a moment to prevent myself from throwing it. Rory and Archer are a matched set and I loved the HEA so much I couldn't not include the last couple of lines on my quotes (no spoilers).
The side characters were also loveable. Alina was exactly the best friend Rory needed to keep her from retreating into her shell. I loved that we got to see the progression of her relationship with Evan as well. We also had the other football guys who naturally gave Archer a lot of shit in a loving way. Especially when he was being an idiot.
TDLR: This is a great slow-burn enemies-to-lovers with loveable side characters and MCs that are pretty perfect for one another.
Kindle Unlimited: Yes Stand-alone: Yes Author: Melissa Toppen Rating: 4/5 ⭐️ Spiciness Rating: 2.5/5 🌶 POV: First Person Perspective Main Couple: Archer and Rory Trope(s): Sport Romance, College Romance, Forced Proximity, Enemies To Lovers
This is my first read by Melissa and I was captivated. This low angst read was just what I needed to clear the angsty reads I had been immersed in. I was swooning, giggling, and page turning right along. I was all in. Until the third act break-up, not a fan. My petty heart just does not feel that is enough time to grovel. Despite that I did enjoy the book. I would entertain another Melissa Toppen book. And, I wouldn’t tell you not to read Archer and Rory’s story.
Rory is in her Senior Year with her eyes on the prize. She has spent the last three years working towards her degree to graduate with an internship with Laboe.
Archer Copeland is the beloved quarterback who transferred in last year and took the football team from a losing record to the championship game.
And, Rory is his only non-fan.
But, an art project throws them together, much to Rory’s dismay.
Rory has been on Archer’s radar from day one. But, he too has his eyes on the prize. And, a relationship is not on the table. And, Rory screams distraction.
The subject of the project is about drawing your perception of your subject.
But, as the sessions go on, Rory just may realize that her perceptions of Archer needs to be re-evaluated.
I received a complimentary early release e-book prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story takes place in college and in the story, we meet Rory and Archer and their friends. This is a college sports romance and is a hate to love or frenemy story.
Archer is a BIG football star, and he falls hard for Rory when they meet but he fights it very hard and in doing so he also makes her hate him. But he also cannot stay away, and they share friends.
Meanwhile Rory is an art student, and she is very determined to attend college and follow her dreams. She wants nothing to do with a jerk like Archer, that is until they end up doing this very cool art project and really get to know each other.
The truth is Archer and Rory have very different interests, but they are also very much alike. They have HUGE dreams and they both have sacrificed to make that happen. And when Archer lets Rory in, well it was a really a beautiful part of this story. And when Rory really opens her eyes and heart to Archer it really made this story.
There are a few hiccups along the way and Archer was a huge IDIOT, but I liked that he realizes this pretty fast. I LOVED that Rory makes him work for her forgiveness. These two shared a really amazing love story and I totally adored both characters and watching them fall for each other.
The Art of Falling takes you on a journey to real love. It may be a slow-burn college romance, but that's where all the "falling" is done. It's in the slowness, it's in the little things. The small compliments, the unexpected visits, and most definitely in the time they took sitting quietly together learning about each other during Rory's art project.
Rory and Archer are both laser-focused on their futures and neither needs the distraction of love along the way. Their story was full of heart and watching them go from enemies to lovers who only got better with each other made this book a sweet read.
I'm not normally one who loves new or young adult, but Rory and Archer are different. Their maturity level is above the rest, and this made the difference for me. Now, obviously, something has to happen to let the gauntlet fall, and Archer sure had me shaking my head and wanting to throttle him, but he knew it too. He knew he screwed up in a big and fabulous way; his friends new it too, but they all stood behind him as he worked tirelessly to win back the other piece of his heart.
My heart bled a at Rory's pain, and it sung as her forgiveness started to show. I wasn't very impressed with Archer for a bit, but in the end, he listened to his heart as they both perfected the art of falling.
There’s an art to everything even falling in love….
A slowburn, enemies to lovers college romance as art student Rory finds herself reluctantly teamed up with star quarterback Archer Copeland to work on an art project. Everyone loves Archer, the athlete who turned the fortunes of their football team around, everyone except for Rory that is who doesn’t have a very high opinion of Archer.
When I started reading this book I was expecting it to be a case of opposites attracting but underneath Archer and Rory are very similar. Both are intent on their futures and achieving their dreams rather than having a personal life. Despite this Archer has always had a bit of a thing for Rory which was apparent to everyone but them and their romance is so beautifully written as they get to really know each other over the course of completing the project gradually falling in love as they do which was a big thing especially for the introverted Rory who struggled to cope with the attention being with Archer brought. If only he hadn’t gotten scared of his feelings and did something that made Rory think she’d been right about him all along. With great supporting characters which make me hopeful that The Art of Falling might be the start of a series, this was a beautiful story.

A heartwarming slow burn college romance that had me instantly falling in love with Rory and Archer, a truly unique take on a star QB and the shy girl storyline, which sets it apart from those that have come before, the attraction is obvious, although they both fight it, Archer is focused on the end game of the NFL and Rory has no time for footballers who think they are Gods gift, especially someone like Archer, but when for her Art class she has to draw Archer over a few weeks while getting to know him was truly inspirational, as you got to see the couple open up and the attraction growing, Archer has been attracted to Rory for ages, she is best friends with his teammate's girlfriend, but he has tried to keep the attraction from growing to stay focused on football, but the more time the pair spend together in the Art room and away from it the more his feelings grow.
There was one bump or more like a pothole that Ms Toppen dropped in that had me throwing my Kindle across the room and wanting to give Archer a piece of my mind, but he soon got straight into my good books again. A great story, and I loved the epilogue.
The Art of Falling is a slow burn sports romance between Archer and Rory. Archer is the school's star quarterback and Rory is an art student. I really didn't see this book as an enemies to lovers romance. I felt like Archer and Rory were more alike than different and Rory disliked him purely based upon the jock stereotype. Archer never disliked Rory. He just liked getting a reaction out of her and having her attention.
I also felt the ending was rushed. Rory is portrayed as this focused and sassy FMC who doesn't put up with Archer's BS. Yet he purposely makes out with a girl in front of Rory, not two hours after they have sex together and she forgives him easily. Her response just doesn't fit her character. And six months later he signs with an NFL team, Rory gets her dream internship and Archer proposes. Rushed!
I did enjoy this book regardless because the banter between Archer and Rory was terrific. I also loved a lot of the secondary characters - Alina, Enzo, Higgins, Ryder, and Tigs. I would read Tigs' story if it was ever written.

The Art of Falling by Melissa Toppen is an enemy to lovers, college romance. Rory is an art student who takes her studies very seriously. She doesn’t party or hook up. She is laser focused on her degree and to getting an internship to Laboe, a prestigious clothing designer. Archer is the school’s star quarterback and campus ladies man. Rory loathes Archer, but has to put up with him when they are paired on an art project. Archer has had a thing for Rory for a while. He sees a lot of himself in her. But he’s super focused on football and getting drafted and doesn’t want a girl getting in the way of his goals. These two were fun to watch (read). I enjoyed watching(reading) their witty banter. Archer was actually really sweet when Rory gave him a chance. I absolutely loved their story and wanted more of it when it was over. I definitely recommend this book to everyone that enjoys enemies to lovers. You won’t be disappointed.
I absolutely loved this book! It was so cute that Archer fell first and for a girl you typically wouldn’t expect to see with a star quarterback. He tries for a whole year to keep his distance because he basically doesn’t want to end up like his father. Rory is an art major and much like Archer doesn’t want anything or anyone to get between her and her dreams so she assumes the worst of him. It was so nice getting to watch him open up to her during their sessions and watch her change her perspective of him with each one. They both loved each other but because he was to afraid to admit he loved her he went and screwed up by kissing some hoe 🙄. Like dude don’t be a baby 😂, then he finally realizes he can keep his dream because his life sucks without her (duh). Anyway, this was a really good book and I would recommend it!

The Art of Falling is a fantastic slow burn you will not want to miss. This is all about really getting to know the person before you judge them. Rory and Archer have this beautiful chemistry build that evolves over time. Archer is the star quarter back hiding behind his image. Rory is a talented artist who is hiding in herself. I love how Archer and Rory slowly bring down the walls and see each other for who they really are. You feel the passion they both have. You feel the build of more. You feel everything that is said and not said between Archer and Rory. I could not get enough of Rory and Archer. I did not want to put this one down. I love Rory and Archer so much. You need to meet them today.
College is just a steppingstone for Rory, and she can’t afford to be distracted by any man let alone a football player. When she first met Archer, he didn’t make a good impression so avoiding him was easy but when they find themselves having to work together on a school assignment, she finds out there is much more to the player than she thought.
Archer knows that if he is going to play football professionally, he needs to remain focused, so he tries to deny his feelings for Rory. That is proving to be much easier said than done as she breaks through his walls whether he is ready for it or not.
Although it wasn’t easy, I enjoyed seeing Archer open his heart to Rory and seeing how they supported each other so that they could pursue their dreams and have each other.
1st book by this author. I received it in my romance reveal book subscription & it's signed! Only complaint is the author used the phrase "as per usual", "Let out a puff of breath, & "popped the P" a little too much throughout the book. Slow burn sports story between quiet introvert Rory & star quarterback Archer. She makes too many assumptions about him and he sees her clearly. A high jacked art project has them spending time together getting to know one another. Archer tries his hardest to prove to Rory that he's not who she thinks he is. She wants none of it but gets help from her feisty roommate Alina and Archer's teammates Enzo, Higgins, & Tiggs. A skillfully written story & I will be reading more from this author
Received this one in the Reveal Book Box in March 2024.
"I don't care if he can produce sunshine from his a**hole. I would never worship at his feet the way so many others do."
"Remind me later to find a new best friend." "Adding it to my mental calendar as we speak. Oh wait, sh*t... It just got deleted. To bad. Looks like you're stuck with me."
"Life can change on a dime. If it's real, it'll endure. If it's not then it will inevitably end. But there's only one way to find out and that's by being willing to take the chance, no matter how much it f*cking terrifies you.''
I'm usually not one for sports or college romances. This one kept me interested though, which I was not expecting. I will definitely be looking into more books by this author.
Every time I read one of Melissa's books, I think the is the best one yet and then she proves me wrong...Rory and Archer, I couldn't put it down. Both characters are strong in their desire to succeed and don't want anything to get in their way. Archer, Mr. Quarterback, has had his eye on Rory for over a year and manages to become her subject for an art project. She can't stand him and is not happy about the arrangement but over time see begins to see a different side of him and realizes she really cares for him but he realize that she can be part of his future? This is a really well written story and it grabs you from the beginning page. I always look forward to her stories!
Oh my heart. Rory and Archer took it and ran away with it. I was so engrossed with these two I didn't notice the time and the night got away from me. Archer really works hard to build Rory's trust and to become friends and eventually more. Rory wants her heart to stay safe and does everything she can to hold him off but dang it he is just so sweet. These two were just a joy to get to know and their hearts, man you will break with them and you will rejoice when you hear Archer be a man and get his girl.
Oh man, I just could never make up my mind with these two. One minute I wanted to hug them and the next I wanted to shake them. No doubt though that they give your emotions a wicked workout, have you all up in your feelings and falling hard. Rory and Archer's story is sweet, slow-burning, spicy and angsty. When obstinate and stubborn face off, you just know the sparks will abundant and fiery, and even though I found myself frustrated from time to time, I also found myself completely charmed by this awesomely swoon worthy romance.
I love how this story makes you feel like these characters are friends of yours. Rory is the perfect fit to Archer. They made me feel their insecurities, hope for their future and at the same time drove me crazy.
Melissa knows how to give you a superb romance that makes the reader appreciate the ups and downs and fears her characters have and how you never judge a character by what you see but how they are able to let you into their world. I received an ARC for an honest and voluntarily review.
This is Archer and Rory’s story. Archer is a cocky quarterback, and Rory is an art student. These two love to butt heads, but they are both focused on achieving their dreams. This is a well written story which is a fun easy to read, slow burn story, with humor, witty banter, friendships, angst, enemies / lovers, forced proximity, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and steamy college sports romance. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Heartfelt sweet read with a lot of heart! This college romance was a charming and thoughtful story that dissects love and it’s many complicated sides. Archer and Rory are both looking forward to finishing college and achieving their life goals. Romance was not in the cards. Yet things are never what we expect and when Archer is assigned to work with Rory things happened they never expected! Appearances are deceiving, and people see what they want to see. Or do they? Young love with all its drama unfolds as they figure out what to do. Things Worth reading!
The Art of Falling by Melissa Toppen is the story of Rory and Archer. Archer is a popular quarterback football player. Rory is an up and coming artist. They both have run into each other before. Archer had posed for one of her art classes. Now at college it seems that will be happening again. Rory had some misconceptions about Archer but once they started to really interact they found they both had been feeling something deeper. I enjoyed this book and I hope to read more from this author.
It could be the whole NA genre but I found the MMC (and almost every one of his teamates) to be so fucking shallow. I get it, football is life... blah blah blah. I don't really care to read over 200 pages until he figures it that he's been an asshole.
I did give an extra star since he was not a manwhore but then she's basically a nun with only 1 high school bf in her past so it's still the cliche imbalance that all women are supposed to attain. Plus all the friends are whoring enough for them both.
