Or a dying brain’s hallucination of something better than bleeding out in the Chilean mountains?
At least, that’s what Winston Haarlock, Delta Force operator turned mercenary, thought when he woke up in a picturesque field. Either way, the booming voice was asking him to pick a class.
Session Zero is the first book of Haarlock's Destiny, a LitRPG epic fantasy series with magic, monsters, game mechanics, and a raccoon.
I tried to like this book. I just couldn't. There are so many, just little plot points that to me felt off that I dropped the book at page 90. I'll tell you about four of them, 1: ex delta force gets lost in the woods. What he couldn't follow those same tracks backwards? 2: The entire goblin warren trip. No challenge at all even though he faced the rest of the warren all at once after the alarm was raised. It felt a bit rushed and unfinished with the way the fight was just over with out any real details. 3: The relationship with the female at the mill. It's like she was a one night stand that got extended. Her blurting out she has a crush on the MC makes zero sense. 4: He spends more time going around enemies than he does killing them. At times it didn't come across as doable much less believable after he snuck past all the guards at the skeleton dungeon. It even says that there were undead rogues in the shadows. So how did he manage to sneak past them all? 4: Probably my biggest problem is the MC leaves most of the loot behind. If you need money why not collect the weapons and armour at least from the goblin warren since he has killed them all. When I spend more time questioning the MC and his actions then I do enjoying the story it's going to get dropped. The editing wasn't that good either because the plot problems should have been pointed out.
The MC Haarlock comes across as a decent guy , he doesn't moan about his situation and moved forward with his new life , he works hard makes friends and due to his "build" specialization choice he's never going to be overpowering and I must admit his choice of specialization seems a huge mistake especially after his lucky reward , I find it hard to see how he can balance his renoun/infamy ,but we'll find out , I'm really looking forward to his re-establishing Huerto de Vid Azul , the tournament will probably be interesting as well.
Honestly, I hate spec ops based characters, they are always written so poorly, typically slated as mentally ill murders. This character is a bit better and has a conscious even if he does live in a bit of a gray area at times. I really enjoyed his raccoon companion and the varied issues that the MC deals with, from goblins to running a small vineyard. Great story i'd read the next book.
Session Zero is an amazing book, that very accurately portrays how it would feel if you became your dnd character. This is the first LitRPG I've personally read, and it was a fun expierence that felt as if I was right there grinding levels along with the main character Haarlock. There's always a new quest and a potential unsavvy character lurking around every corner, and this book does a great job fleshing out all of them. Exciting and fun read, can't wait for the next one!
Main character finds himself in a fantasy world and needs to learn quickly, or become monster chum. He teams up with a few others, most of whom seem to be “natives” of the fantasy world, rather than travelers like himself.
I happened to start this book at the same time as another which had a very similar starting setup, but that series turned much darker in tone. This book’s tone feels much lighter - almost breezy - as the main character learns the ropes of being a rogue in “the game”.
The book starts off with the typical military trained male whisked away to an alternate world. The build up once there though the story picks up. I think it was chapter four or five when I really wondered why there was a raccoon on the cover. A good read with some interesting ideas in a lit rpg. I really want the next book now!
A great day read with well written characters and, of course, his little chunky familiar. The best part about this book is that I got to learn a new word... "mayordomo." I was so sure that it was a typo, and the right word was "majordomo." Nope, I was wrong, "mayordomo" is a real word. I can't wait for book 2!
Loved it great game mechanics world building at its best, really interesting lead character and the storyline line has great pace to it, t he fight and battle scenes are well thought out .One of the better books this year keep them comng!
Very easy to read, no whining or woe is me characters Adult parts but more realistic than other books, just a good book to binge read.. I would recommend this book to anyone
