America's most scenic train, The Zephyr, is deep inside Moffat Tunnel when the entire Yellowstone Caldera explodes, spreading death and destruction across the west. While millions die, the passengers and crew aboard the Zephyr are protected in the 6.2 mile long tunnel. As ash settles, the people on the train have to use all of their combined wisdom, skills, and resources to punch their way out of the mountains, get clear of the dead zone, and survive together on the Last Zephyr.
If you like suspenseful dramatic stories you are going to enjoy this book, you will like it even more if you are a fan of trains. Although I don't know all the train lingo I did catch on pretty quick as the story developed. The vivid description of the setting, characters and plot kept my attention and made me eager to keep reading late into the night. Although there were many characters and I thought that might make it difficult for me to follow, it wasn't. I was able to visualize them in my head as each one had a unique role. I really enjoyed the banter between some of the main characters as it showed real personality. The suspense of the story kept me hooked as well. Overall I would recommend this book to advanced teen readers and adults.
The Last Zephyr by C.B. Blackforest captures the raw emotion of humanity - presenting it honestly, wholesomely, and (at times) gruesomely. The knowledge of mechanics, engineering, physics, and linguistics keeps the reader engaged. The harrowing tale with a rigorous storyline makes this book difficult to set down and a travesty to be done with. Congratulations on your first book C.B., hope to see more. (10/10)
