The Experience of Psychosis

Breakthrough – Annie Hansen Mysteries Book 4, by Kenna McKinnon, focuses on Skye Christina Snow. She is Annie Hansen’s daughter. In previous stories in this series, we met and understood the psychological nature of Annie Hansen, who became an unlikely crime investigator for their police department, though she suffers from several psychoses that is kept in check with medication. Annie has a very respected knack for solving crimes. We also meet her devoted cop husband Mark, who loves her without exception.

The story of Breakthrough focuses on their daughter, Skye Christine, who has inherited her mother’s psychoses. Skye is aware of the familiarity with her mother’s imperfections that she has inherited and controlled, until Skye has a major psychotic break that leaves her missing without a trace, and wanted for the murder of her boss.

At this point I have to say that I was so emmeshed in this story, in the mind of Skye and her mental processes, I did not realize what was happening to her. Not until the story switched back to Annie and Mark’s search for their beloved daughter, did I realize how deeply I had sunk into this plot and Skye’s distorted reality.

I have said it before in reviews for the other stories in this series which I have read and reviewed: McKinnon understands the pathology of a trouble mind. Her ability to write her characters drew me in to the point I was mentally as lost as Skye. McKinnon’s innate knowledge of the workings of a troubled mind is what makes the unexpected twists and turns in these stories real, harsh, and deeply disturbing. I never knew what to expect, and certainly did not expect to get so wrapped up in Skye’s psychotic break. Guaranteed, this book will sweep the reader into another realm.
