The story of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, who became an international hero for his courage and selflessness.
Ever since he was a young boy growing up on the streets of Staten Island, New York, Michael Ollis wanted to be a soldier. Inspired by his father, who fought in Vietnam, Mike’s deep desire to serve was cemented on the day his beloved city was attacked. From 9/11 onward, Mike’s one and only mission was to save lives.
After two tense combat deployments, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis earned the US Army’s coveted Ranger tab and set his sights on the perilous mountains of eastern Afghanistan. On August 28, 2013, Mike was suddenly caught in the middle of a massive and unprecedented Taliban assault on a coalition military base. Rather than retreat to his bunker as ordered, Mike decided to fight. He then encountered a Polish army officer who needed his help.
Despite being surrounded by enemy fighters while running low on ammunition, Mike promised the foreign soldier that no matter what, he would have his back. For his final act of bravery, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis would not only receive the Distinguished Service Cross from his own country, but the highest honor that Poland can bestow upon an allied soldier.
As an American warrior, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis had all of our backs. This vivid and visceral account of Mike’s selfless 24-year journey will motivate us to “live like Mike” by always putting family, friends and country first.

The motto of the 22nd Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, US Army, is Deeds, Not Words. This perfectly sums up the life of SSG Michael Ollis.
In this book he follows the life of Michael Ollis, who since he was a little boy wanted to become a soldier just like his dad was in Vietnam. He wanted to be an infantryman and a sergeant to lead men into battle. At the age of 17 he signed up to live out his dream. He deployed three times to combat zones, one in Iraq and twice in Afghanistan to lead men into battle. There he made the ultimate sacrifice by saving the life, not of a fellow American soldier, but of a Polish soldier whom he had never met before. He did this because he had his brother in arms' back.
The book is heart breaking as from the start you know how it ends for SSG Ollis. The books tells his story through letters he wrote and received and memories from his family, friends and fellow soldiers. The story is beautifully told and the author shows you exactly what a great person and hero Ollis was in his short life, and how he always took care of those around him.
Near the end of the book the author includes a piece written by Ollis' nephew that is about how we all take freedom for granted, the freedoms that are guarded by men and women like SSG Ollis, which really makes one think and appreciate.
Tom Sileo is fast becoming one of my favorite authors, as this is the fourth book I have read of him, and this is my fourth five star rating for him. Highly recommended read, just like his others
I received a free copy of, I Have Your Back, by Tom Sileo, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Staff Sergent Michael Ollis, is a true American hero. At only 24 years old, he did what many people could not do. This book made me cry, what a great tribute to an amazing man, who protected his own men, but men from other countries too!
This was my second Tom Sileo book and once again he left me feeling moved and more proud to be an American.
A story about an American Soldier, Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis, who served our country with loyalty, courage and the ultimate sacrifice. Tom Sileo is an exceptional writer making you feel like you’re right there in the story. It’s beautifully written filled with raw and real emotions of Mike’s life and military career. I entered this book knowing nothing about SSG Mike Ollis and I left feeling that I personally knew Mike, his family and comrades. Mike is the embodiment of what an American Hero is.
This was an absolute privilege to read. It’s a read I will hold close to my heart for the rest of time. It’s a read I will recommend to any American. I guarantee you will walk away feeling proud to be an American.
Thank you #NetGalley #StMartinsPress and #TomSileo for the opportunity to read I have Your Back: How An American Soldier Became An International Hero.
Do takich refleksji skłoniła mnie lektura powieści biograficznej „Ocalę Cię.
Rzucił się, by powstrzymać śmierć. I zrobił to.
Staff Sergeant Michael Hollis is a true hero. He completely understood the code of other's first [no matter what; this is something he lived by from a young age] to the point of saving lives with absolutely no regard of his own life and safety [he was not reckless, but he also didn't think that not having safety gear on was a reason to run away from a fight]. At the age of 24, with his whole life still in front of him, he, like so many brave men and women before him, made the ultimate sacrifice so others could live and so freedom would not be forsaken. The awards and accolades he received after his act of heroism shows how well-loved, and respected he was and while it is understood that those will never replace his life, it was heartwarming to see just how people loved him and honored him and his acts of service. If you want to know what a true patriot looks like, all you have to do is look at this young man's life and service.
A book everyone should be reading [especially in this unsettling times], this book will show you love - of country, of family, and of the people who walk with us, and once read, will leave you forever changed.
Roger Wayne is my new favorite narrator and once again, he does an excellent job while telling a difficult story. I highly recommend listening to this man tell Staff Sergeant Ollis's story - he brings so much to the story and truly honors the fallen soldier's memory.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tom Sileo, Roger Wayne - Narrator, St. Martin's Press and Macmillan Audio for providing the audiobook and eBook ARC's in exchange for an honest review.
I knew and served with Mike and will forever remember him. It would feel wrong to rate or review this book. This book is worth reading if for no other reason than who and what it is about.
I have to admit that I typically read other genres, but I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book through Goodreads.
Reading about the journey of this hero is eye-opening. I work with veterans on a daily basis and now have a better understanding of the comradery and mindset of those in the military.
Sileo tells the story of SSG Michael Ollis in a way that makes the reader connect to the hero and really pulls on the heartstrings. I cried quite a bit before the ending. I highly recommend this book, especially to someone who doesn't typically pick up a book about war.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. All Mike wanted to do with his life was serve in the military just like his father. He idolized his father. When he joined the army he sacrificed many things. He met several great individuals who became like brothers to him. He sacrificed so much for our country and was a wonderful individual. A must read.
So I began this audiobook today while doing work on my garden. I chose it thru NetGalley a while ago, and just knew that it was one of the books coming out soon…so I started it…not really remembering what it was about…
****PLEASE BE FOREWARNED…I CRIED…I MEAN LOUD SOBBING CRIES…FOR A LONG TIME…WHILE LISTENING, WHILE GARDENING, AND WHILE COOKING DINNER…So, if you do not want to find yourself in the same predicament…choose a time when you can read this alone…. Just FYI… ****
The book is about Michael Olis…a true war hero!
From the time he was a little boy, growing up in Staten Island (SI), NY…he idolized his father who had been a Vietnam War Veteran. And then, when NYC was hit during 9/11, he vowed to take part in fighting the evil out there…
So, at age 17, he signed up with the Army.
This book takes you through many accounts of his life… Told in through family. Through friends. Through Army Officers, and through many of his comrades…
This also touched my heart as I spent many, many years on SI. I went to College/Nursing School there…and my first two Critical Care Roles were in SI as well…so I totally connected with the places mentioned in the book…
This was beautifully written, and really tugged at my heart. His family and he are now in my prayers. He was obviously a selfless man who was a friend to many, a teacher to some, and family to others…
And his parents…well, God will surely bless them, as they raised a wonderful boy….and my heart truly goes out to them… And, how special are they too?? Make sure to listen to (read) the epilogue where the parents are so involved with so many guys in his regiment…
Thanks so much to #NetGalley and #MacmillanAudio for an ARC of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
It is due to be released on 6/4/24..so a couple of days…
#IHaveYourBack by #TomSileo and narrated beautifully by #RogerWayne.

Thanks so much for reading! And if you ‘liked’ my review, please share with your friends!! 📚⭐️
This is the second book that I have read of Mr Sileo's and just like when I read Three Wise Men, I was not disappointed in the depiction of the life and events that lead up to the ultimate sacrifice made by SSG Ollis.
From the start of this book, the pride for his country, love for his family and friends as well as his decisions to to fight and continue to fight for his country after the events of 9/11 bled from the page starting at page one right up until the end. Upon completing this book, I felt as if I personally knew SSG Michael Ollis and my respect for his actions at the end of his life that were not only selfless but what one would have expected of him knowing the type of person that he was. Knowing that he sacrificed his life to save another still did not make his sacrifice any less heartbreaking for the man that he was and would have become but for his family as well.
This was a tasteful depiction of life, triumphs and failures as well as the sacrifices made by SSG Ollis that where I was destroyed by the end of the story would recommend to others.
This book had me so absorbed i could not stop until the very end.
If i ever need my story told or any if my family members Tom Sileo would be who I would reach out to!!
I don’t know the author i has the privilege of reading this book from Net Galley.
Having lost my brother in-law on 5-26-1968 KIA in the Viet Nam War when i was only 10 years old i really could relate to this book (unfortunately).
I never had the honor and pleasure of meeting Staff Sergeant Mike Ollis but have been blessed to have a different Army NCO that is very similar in duties and locations. I will hug him even harder the next time i see him. I am going to look up your walk in June and would love to walk in it as an honor in memory of Micael Ollis and My BIL also named Michael who was a Lance Corporal in the Marines.
This book is a much read to everyone but especially anyone who has military members in their family or friend circle.
Thank you, Tom for reading this book and more importantly thank your staff Sergeant MICHAEL, who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Rest in Eternal Peace
This was the third book written by Tom Sileo that I have read. Like the other two, I was captivated and could not put it down until the very end.
Tom Sileo once again wrote a powerful, moving book about an American hero. He introduces us to US Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis starting from when he was a very young child. He continues telling his story through his childhood and how he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and join the US Army. SSG Michael Ollis made the ultimate sacrifice saving other members of the military and contractors from the US, Poland, and Afghanistan.
Before reading this book, I had not heard of SSG Michael Ollis. Tom Sileo gives us a clear understanding of the amazing person he was. Not only by how his friends from all the different parts if his life still stay in touch with his family, but also by how 10 years after his death, SSG Michael Ollis is still being honored and remembered both in the US and Poland.
I wish i could give more than 5 stars. Was a little hesitant starting the book, have to be honest. But man it just grabbed you and you get so involved, you don’t want it to end! Might be my best book so far in 2024. Recommend it to everyone.
US Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis loved his dad and wanted to emulate his successful career in the Army. He rose through the ranks and became a very successful squad leader in Afghanistan. His primary focus was the mission and bringing all his squad back safely.
The soldiers were assisting the Afghanistan army in learning how to protect their people and maintaining their fledgling democracy.
Staff Sergeant Ollis was always drilling and reviewing tactics to keep his men prepared and safe. On the day he was critically wounded he got his men into a secure compound and left them to help secure the perimeter after a car bomb attack breached the perimeter. The action saved the life of a Polish soldier; Second Lieutenant Karol Cierpica.
The accomplishments of this Long Island, New York native are stellar. Hopefully, Congress will review his file and upgrade his medal to the Congressional Medal of Honor. 4.5 stars – CE Williams
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book. Any opinions expressed here are my own.
The author has an ability to bring his subject into clear light and allow the reader to fully appreciate the person who is the subject of his book. US Army Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis was a man who gave of himself to do what was right a world away from his home and regardless of danger to himself. Go to your bookstore or library and read the author's earlier book Fire In My Eyes. I requested and received a free temporary EARC from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley. Thank you.
{Thank you to @netgalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Macmillan Audio for my gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.}
This book tells the life story of an American hero. Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis always wanted to serve in the military. When he became of age, he joined the Army and ultimately became an Army Ranger, an incredible accomplishment. Staff Sergeant Ollis served in multiple overseas deployments in the early 2000s before being killed in action in 2013, when he gave his life to save someone else’s. Michael was only 24 at the time.
This was a great listen on audio and, despite being very emotional towards the end, I really enjoyed it. Military books like this can be hard for me to read at times as a mil spouse, but I’m so glad that I know about Staff Sergeant Ollis and his sacrifice.
Somewhere, Michael’s family will be remembering their son this Memorial Day. I’ll think of them now.
Highly recommend!
This book releases in June, but if you’d like to learn a little bit about Michael now, you can read the article honoring him on The Fallen here: https://thefallen.militarytimes.com/a...
As the mother of two active-duty sons, reading this book was incredibly tough. I am so thankful for the service and sacrifice of Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis. I wish I had known him, but the author does a great job of truly allowing you to 'see' who Michael Ollis was, making it feel like you know him. Following his father's footsteps, Michael Ollis enlists in the military, determined to be the best soldier he can be. Throughout three deployments, his journey takes him to Afghanistan, where he works hard to be a mentor and leader to those he serves with. His courage under fire and ability to lead his men saved many lives, including that of a Polish soldier fighting alongside him. He lost his life while protecting others. Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis is a hero who deserves our gratitude, and his family deserves our thanks for raising a courageous young man who was willing to sign his name on the dotted line.
First I want to thank Goodreads and the publisher for the chance of winning arc (advanced readers copy).
I have your back by Tom Sileo was a fantastic and heartfelt read about an American soldier who became an international hero by sacrificing his life to save others. He was a true hero and it’s sad that the world has to have such violence.
This is one of my quintessential books in my lifetime, one that will stick with me for ages. I'd never heard this story before attending a recognition ceremony for Staff Sgt. Ollis at the Polish Embassy in 2026. Sgt. Ollis' heroism and his everyday American upbringing are highlighted in great detail. Tom Sileo does a phenomenal job profiling this American hero and his family. This book is a life changer. Must read!
Beautifully written tribute of a brave man and his friends, family and time serving his country. One of my favorites this year- thank you to the author and goodreads for my copy.
Michael Ollis, lived in Staten Island, New York, and wanted to be a soldier from the time he was a young child, after his father had gone to Vietnam to fight. , After 9/11, he was determined to enlist and save lives. This is the journey of his life in the US Army for 24 years. He was a man and a soldier, that went after the thing he wanted most, he was a leader, he was there for the soldiers, and he had their back. He earned the respect the soldiers have for him, and most of all he wanted to save lives and he did. I received an ARC from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley, and his story had to be told, for all the things he did.
I did not finish this book without a dry eye, I feel honored to have read this and even more honored to know one of Michaels friends who served so close with him. All I can say is what an amazing human, thank you Michael for the ultimate sacrifice; you will not be forgotten.
This book tells the story of Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis. He died in Afghanistan, saving the lives of soldiers when the Taliban attacked an FOB. It's a remarkable story about a true hero. In every sense of the word.
Michael Ollis wanted to serve his country because his dad had served in Viet Nam. After 9/11, his desire became stronger. He enlisted in the Army and worked his way up to Staff Sergeant. His bravery and work ethic and sense of fraternity shine through in this book. After reading the story of the attack on the FOB and Ollis's heroism, I'm surprised he hasn't been upgraded to the Medal of Honor.
The greatest testament to him is the fact that so may people feel so connected to him. And keep in touch with his family. Ollis truly created a community. Tom Sileo does a wonderful job of making you feel as though you are part of that family when you read this book. It's well-written and pays wonderful tribute to an extraordinary person.
I won an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and was not given any compensation in exchange for this review. The opinions contained herein are mine and mine alone.
This book is a must read for every American. We all take our freedoms for granted and never take the time to realize that those freedoms were fought for by other Americans. Americans who loved this country enough to sacrifice all for it. The author brings us into the life of one of those soldiers who loved and died for his country. Mike Ollis was a special young man whose one goal in life was to join the Army and be the best soldier he could be. He was an outstanding soldier, officer, and friend leaving a legacy that will last in the hearts of many for years to come. He was an international hero whose story continues to touch the lives of people today. Please do not pass up this book that tells the true story of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis!
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of the book.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

Ollis’s desire to serve, inspired by his Vietnam veteran father, led him on a 24-year journey. His bravery during a massive Taliban assault exemplifies the warrior spirit.

“I Have Your Back” honors an American warrior who truly had all of our backs. 🇺🇸🌟
A must red book. I had not heard of Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis prior to reading this book. An amazing man, committed to serving his country and protecting fellow soldiers at all costs. His sacrifices will not be forgotten. I was crying by the end of the book - such a remarkable young man. #IHaveYourBack #StMartinsPress #NetGalley
