LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan returns in P. J. Tracy’s City of Secrets, the next book in the series praised by the New York Times Book Review: “Tracy seems to have found her literary sweet spot.”

Los Angeles Police Detective Margaret Nolan and her partner have worked a lot of different cases, ones where things aren’t always as they appear. And it’s Nolan’s job to find the truth in the darkness around her. When they’re called to the scene of what looks like a fatal car-jacking, Nolan soon realizes her victim was a founder of a company about to sell for millions, and within a day of his death, his partner’s wife is abducted. As Nolan learns more about the victim and his life, she gets pulled into a disturbing world of sex, violence, and big business; and an even darker world, where whispers of an "Angel of Death" are beginning to surface.

One of today's finest crime writers, P. J. Tracy has created a series that is a rich and authentic portrait of LA, filled with the tragedy and optimism of her multi-layered characters and a story guaranteed to keep readers enthralled.

P.J. Tracy (pseudonym of Traci Lambrecht) returns with the fourth police procedural crime novel featuring Los Angeles Homicide Detective Margaret “Maggie” Nolen. The complex and multi-layered plot has several threads that must be connected to solve the case. Can Maggie and her partner, Detective Al Crawford, put the pieces together?

Maggie is competitive, hates to lose, likes to be in control, loves her job, and has a temper. While she’s dedicated to her work, she and Detective Remy Beaudreau are also trying to determine where they want their relationship to go. Connecting with Maggie was effortless. She’s relatable and the secondary characters were very well developed. However, due to the number of them, it might be easier to assimilate if one has read the first three books in the series as some are reoccurring characters.

The book starts with three seemingly unrelated chapters. How the author weaves them into the story and builds the connections kept me engaged throughout. She balances the crime portion of the novel with a look at the developments in the personal lives of some of the main and secondary characters. This added another dimension to the story as well as helping readers relate more to the characters.

Filled with suspense, action, and various investigations, this novel has something for everyone who enjoys crime novels and police procedurals. The tension level stayed high throughout the story as I tried to put the pieces together along with Maggie and Al. Several of the last few chapters had surprises in them along with the action. This added depth to the story as well as helped to connect more of the facets of the investigation. The intriguing plot unfolded at a moderately fast pace and the world-building transported me to Los Angeles. There was always something new going on that kept me engaged. While the investigation threads were resolved, there were a couple of open items on the personal side for which I wanted more closure. Themes include murder, abductions, gangs, greed, friendship, family, and much more.

Overall, this compelling and gripping novel was a page turner with great characterization and a complex plot. While this series is best read in order, enough background is provided to allow this to be a standalone novel as well. Those who enjoy police procedurals and crime thrillers with a strong female lead will likely enjoy the series. I can’t wait to see where the author takes the next book in the series.

St. Martin’s Press – Minotaur Books and P.J. Tracy provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for August 20 2024. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced, crime thriller. It has an intelligent, strong and capable, likable female protagonist, wit, a touch of romance, murder, mystery, intrigue, kidnapping, twists and turns, and a surprise ending. I especially liked the short chapters. This is the fourth entry in P.J. Tracy's outstanding Detective Margaret Nolan series, and it can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone. Ms. Tracy's loyal readers will appreciate the nod to her other series. St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books, P.J. Tracy, and NetGalley kindly provided me with an ARC of this fantastic novel, and this is my honest opinion.

Los Angeles Police Detective Margaret Nolan and her partner Al Crawford are called to the scene of what looks like a fatal car-jacking. The victim was one of the founders of a company about to sell for millions and, within a day of his death, his partner’s wife is abducted. Detective Nolan gets pulled into a disturbing world of sex, violence and big business.

Like the previous book in this series that I read, the story is well written and easy to grasp. I really like Margaret (also called Maggie, Mags and Nolan in the story) as a character; she seems very realistic and down-to-earth. I don't normally like romance in my police procedurals, especially between colleagues, but it's not that prominent in this book. There are many side characters, some of whom have featured in the previous books and some new ones and more than once I had to skip back to remind myself who a character was. It was amazing how seemingly unrelated incidents all came together in the end. This is Book 4 in the series but could be read as a standalone. I still hope to find time to read Books 1 and 2 and I'll be watching for Book 5.

I was invited to read an advance copy of this book by Natalie Sun, Marketing Intern, St. Martin's Publishing, so thank you to her and to St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via Netgalley for the opportunity. All opinions expressed are my own.

City of Secrets was an easy to read detective story. Short chapters, and the storyline was simple and clear. Perfect for an end of summer time read.

I jumped right in on book 4 and had no problem following the story. I noticed my library has all the other books in this series. I'm eager and excited to read more books by P.J. Tracy.

A man is found murdered in his luxury automobile in a seedier section of LA. Turns out he is Bruce Messane, the CEO of a successful pet food company that is about to be bought out in a mega million dollar deal. Detectives Margaret Nolan and Al Crawford have a mystery on their hands that deepens when Messane's former partner’s wife is kidnapped. Their inquiry uncovers possible financial discrepancies in Messane’s life as well as his penchant for dark sexual proclivities. And, is there a connection to the ever present drug trade in LA?

City of Secrets has a creative, complex, but solid story line, full of mystery, twists, some humor, and convivial repeating characters. It is a fast, engrossing read, with the chapters moving along at a good pace.

This is the fourth in the Detective Margaret Nolan series; I have read all of them. While this could be read as a standalone, I think I enjoyed it more knowing the histories of many of the characters. There are quite a few players and some of the backstories are not fully developed. That said, I recommend this book and series for fans of police procedurals and mysteries, particularly those featuring a strong, capable female protagonist.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #StMartinsPress #Minotaur for the DRC.

A quick and entertaining read, a thrilling addition to the Detective Margaret Nolan series. On the eve of a big financial deal to sell his company, the CEO of a successful pet food company is found dead in his car in a rough part of LA. Why was he there? Drugs? Sex? Then his former partner's wife is kidnapped. Just a coincidence? Not likely.

Nice combination of drama and humor. I enjoyed these characters and their personal relationships. Looking forward to seeing where the author takes her characters next. Big changes in store?

City of Secrets is #4 in the Margaret Nolan series. It is the first book I've read, and it can be read as a standalone, but as with all series reading the previous ones adds more to the characters. I know I'm going to start with #1, Deep into the Dark.

Chapter one starts off with a bang introducing Bruce Messane's angsty demeanor. He's a wealthy man with many secrets that are unveiled after he was found dead in a presumed carjacking gone wrong. The investigation follows drug leads, the sex underworld, and the angel of death. This all comes together in a fast pace to a satisfying conclusion.

I enjoyed the banter and wit amongst the characters. It's a fast paced read with humor and short chapters. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an early copy.

This is a Mystery, and this is the fourth book in the Detective Margaret Nolan series. I have not read the first three books in this series before picking up this book. I ended up DNFing this book around 10% into this book. I really had a ton of trouble getting into this book, and there was a ton of jumping around which made it hard to connect to the characters. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

Los Angeles Police Detective Margaret Nolan and her partner have worked many different cases, and sometimes things weren't as they initially appeared. This time they’re called to the scene where it appears a man may have been killed in an attempted car-jacking. Then it's discovered the victim was a founder of a company about to sell for millions of dollars.

I have to admit to finding the beginning of the book to be confusing. There were so many characters and none of them had even a bit of a backstory for the reader, so my head was spinning. It didn't help when I found out Maggie, Nolan, Margaret, and Mags were all the same person. (I wish writers wouldn't do that.)

HOWEVER!! Once things started making sense to me, I found myself fascinated by the storyline! There was quite a bit of mystery and a few twists to keep readers on their toes.

A note to my dog-loving friends: The dog-napped Corgi wasn't harmed, and the emaciated street dog was taken to the Humane Society. (The street dog led to my favorite line in the book: "The pathetic creature broke her heart, and it would probably be euthanized, but at least it wouldn't suffer anymore. Seeing a hurting child or animal was like a gut punch.")

Many thanks to both #MinotaurBooks and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of City of Secrets. This book is #4 in the Detective Margaret Nolan series, with the expected publication date of August 20, 2024.

Maggie Nolan and the crew are back! This is book four in the series and like book three, this one has a full cast of characters, each with their own POV for us to hear and learn from. I like this as I feel part of the investigation, understanding the different parts and pieces as they come together. To quote Maggie: "Nolan thought about how every case was a puzzle - some were easy enough for a toddler to solve; others were those five-thousand-piece nightmares missing half of them, and you didn't even have the box that showed you what it was supposed to look like. But as you started putting together what you had, a picture began to take shape." I love puzzles, and City of Secrets is a fantastic puzzle in book format, while we work alongside of all the characters to solve the murder of Bruce Messane, co-founder of Peppy Pets. The story didn't surprise me as it came together, but I think that's because I was so caught up in absorbing all of the details. That aspect of the book I really liked. So back to the puzzle analogy, if you like puzzles and mysteries, I do believe you will like this book. Given the number of characters in the book I don't think this works as a stand alone. I feel you must read the series. You will not regret it. I am hopeful there will be a book five!

Having read a number of great novels by P.J. Tracy, I was eager to get my hands on her latest book in this newer series. A dead man at the scene of a car-jacking looks like something more to LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan. The victim’s wife is missing and he was set to inherit millions from a business deal. Who could want him dead and for what reason? Detective Nolan has her work cut out for her in P.J. Tracy’s latest thriller!

Margaret Nolan has seen a great deal as a detective with the LAPD, especially since she found a partner who allows her to extend her wings. When Detective Nolan arrives at an apparent car-jacking gone wrong, she has a feeling there is more to the story. The victim was set to sell his business for millions and the man’s wife had suddenly gone missing. If that were not enough, the victim had a darker side that must be explored.

When Detective Nolan delves into the victim’s life of sex and violence, she can only wonder if someone in this sphere might have targeted him and made it look like something else. Still, professionalism is essential while trying to piece it all together. There must be something else and the LAPD are putting the pressure on her to solve things so everyone can move along.

There is one thread that Detective Nolan has yet to tug upon, which might open new pathways to understanding what happened. It is intriguing to see how it could put all the pieces together. P.J. Tracy spins a story that is sure to keep the reader sleuthing around with Margaret Nolan until the truth comes to light.

P.J. Tracy made her name with a past series as a solid crime writer. Now, working alone, Tracy has been able to create this new series that can hold its own and provides the reader with a great mystery. A narrative that builds from the opening pages keeps the reader guessing as things gain momentum. Great plot twists and decent characters help flavour the story and leave things completely unpredictable. There is something about this series I enjoyed even if it is not my favourite work by P. J. Tracy. I am eager to see where things are headed with Margaret Nolan.

Kudos, Madam Tracy, for a well-constructed piece of writing.

City of Secrets” is the fourth novel in the Detective Margaret Nolan series by author P.J. Tracy, best known for her Monkeewrench series of novels. I was introduced to Tracy and her Nolan series with the third novel, “The Devil You Know”, so I have some background although I have no doubt missed major plot points by not reading the first or second Nolan novels.

Margaret Nolan and her partner are called out to a car jacking in a derelict part of Los Angeles, however when they arrive, Nolan immediately recognizes that something is way off. The murder victim is the multi million-dollar owner of a pet foods company and, when his business partner and his business partner’s wife are abducted the next day, Nolan knows something deeper is going on. As the investigation brings in many other police and federal agencies, the dangers only increase and it is up to Margaret and her team to solve it before more bodies fall.

As stated, it is highly recommended that these novels be read in chronological order. Although I read the third and fourth one as stand-alones, it’s entirely possible, but I always felt a step behind as I made my way through book four. Margaret is a strong protagonist, and if you’re familiar with female-detective police procedurals, “Secrets” is in your wheelhouse.

There are a multitude of characters in “Secrets”, beyond the detectives, officers and government agency officials. The criminal collection alone is rather lengthy, so be prepared to pay close attention to the who’s-who. Although Margaret is the primary narrator, other characters (some shady and some not) will get their chance in the spotlight, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story from both sides.

The ending has some nice twists, unexpected and not, and there is non-stop action to get you there. The plot of “Secrets” is wrapped up nicely, with all the I’s dotted and t’s crossed.

Margaret and her team are brave, funny, emotional and human (I love Ike and his passion for red licorice) and I enjoyed following their journey. I look forward to more Nolan, and hopefully in the meantime I’ll have time to catch up on the Tracy books I have missed!

This book was a miss for me. And it wasn’t because the mystery was not good. It honestly had to do with too many characters and jumping around too much. I really dislike it when authors do this and add so many characters that pop up once then it takes multiple chapters to come back to them, if they even reappear. I get this is a much more realistic view of how an investigation might go but as a reader it is not something I enjoy. This is 100% a personal preference. If you enjoy that type of story telling you might really enjoy this book. Jumping around that much just takes me out of the story.
Thank you so much to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this title.

I've read three other books in this series and looked forward to this, the fourth. But although I admit to staying up later than my regular bedtime to finish this one, it's not my favorite of the bunch. Oh sure, I still love LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan and her crew, but there are just too many characters in too many different places for an aging brain like mine to keep straight. Otherwise, though, it's business as usual - and that usually means plenty of action.

This one begins with the discovery of a body in what seems to have been a car-jacking; the suspicions of Nolan and her partner Al Crawford are aroused, though, when it's discovered that the victim is the founder of a pet supply company that's grown by leaps and bounds and, as a result, about to be scarfed up by an even larger company for a paltry $100 million.

Top company employees deny any notion of fraud or foul play at the business - one of them even conducted a thorough audit in recent months. And the plot thickens when the murdered man's wife is kidnapped - with zero indication of ransom or other conditions that must be met for her safe return.

After that, things tend to get wild and crazy, with characters coming from all over the map. And while all this is going on, Margaret's infatuation with fellow detective Remy Beaudreau (and his with her) is heating up amid questions about where it should go - if anywhere. More kidnappings and close calls happen all the way up to the end, when most of the situations are resolved (with one biggie left wide open for, I hope, the next installment. I'll be waiting - and meantime, I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read a pre-release copy of this one.

“City of Secrets” by P. J. Tracy was a quick and easy to follow thriller that takes place in LA and revolves around the murder of a Pet Food CEO who’s company is too big to fail. Adding to this mystery is the fact that he was a sex addict who had an affair with his business partners wife, and she is kidnapped. There are many twists and turns and extra excitement when street fentanyl is found in pet food boxes! The main character is a female detective who is realistic and interesting as is her relationship with a fellow detective which has to stay a secret from the rest of their department. This book was an enjoyable read with a creative plot.

I didn't realize this was part of a series and haven't read the ones before this but it works well as a stand-alone once I figured out who the characters were. Homicide detective, Maggie discovers Bruce Messane--co-founder of Peppy Pets food--dead in his car with a bullet between the eyes. Of course in this city there are plenty of suspects as there are gang-bangers, drug dealers, kidnappings, and love triangles! What's not to like in a thriller? Kept me up too late but at least I was home safe!

Wow, this was a stunning book, what a nail bitter, I loved it!
It was interesting to read about the dark underbelly of L.A instead of just the rich and famous enclaves. I also liked Nolan and her team, they worked their hearts out to catch a murderer and kidnapper. The twists and turns of this mystery had my heart beating fast, it was so gripping. And what a nice twist at the end, can't wait to read the next one!

This is book four of the Detective Margaret Nolan series, and it keeps getting better and better. In this installment, Detective Margaret Nolan is investigating a fatal car jacking that ends up being so much more and connects to other cases.

As the bodies pile up, this gripping mystery gets even more intriguing. Dangerous forces are coming from different sides as this intricate storyline is woven together. The plot is well paced, the characters are great, and the overall story is vastly entertaining. If you enjoy detective fiction, then this series is a must-read.

PJ Tracy's latest is an excellent addition to her Margaret Nolan series.

The murder of the owner of a gourmet pet food company leads Maggie Nolan and her partner Al Crawford to a kidnapping, a drug cartel, a very scary biker gang, and the even scarier Mimi--a woman of many talents. The result is a lovely, twisty police procedural mystery. I could anticipate a few of the twists, some took me totally by surprise. This was a fast-paced read for me; I had a hard time putting it down.

I love Maggie--smart, savvy, and tenacious. I really want to know what happens next in her life. I hope the author has new book on tap for next year.

I got a kick out of a few call-backs to the author's previous series. I love those little 'Easter eggs' for long-time readers.

This was the fourth in a series starring Lt. Margaret Nolan, a homicide detective in Los Angeles. Nolan gets assigned to a supposed drive by shooting, but the victim turns out to be a wealthy and respected businessman. What was he doing in a really bad area? The story takes off from there and we see next, the wife of his ex-partner is kidnapped. Is all of this related. More kidnappings, more bodies pile up, what is going on?

The story had many twists and turns and many other areas of law enforcement were brought in before this story came to a close. I have to admit, I did not see where it was going and the ending was a bit of a surprise,

Characters from prior books in this series were also involved, mostly on the sidelines, but nice to hear from them too. I enjoyed this read as I have every novel that P. J. Tracy has published.

I want to say thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for offering me this early read.

City of Secrets starts with several familiar characters in short chapters, each seemingly unrelated to the next. First Bruce Messane gets a call from Mimi. Next, Detectives Maggie Nolan and her partner Al Crawford are called to a new case; also, there’s Detective Remy Beaudreau and the Kang case he’s working on involving fentanyl. Third: Sam Easton learns of the possibility of consulting for SWAT. Fourth, Officer Gonzales is outside of Poppy’s Body Shop investigating an unidentified dead body shot inside a BMW. Chapter Five introduces several additional new characters: Cynthia Jackson, CFO of Bruce Messane’s company at a meeting with Wilder and his attorney, Montserrat De Leon. Finally, in Chapter Six, Maggie and Al identify the dead body as Bruce Messane, President and CEO of Peppy Pets. And slowly, from that point on, the pieces start to fall into place and somehow the murder, the Kang case, the SWAT team’s investigation, and a subsequent kidnapping are all connected somehow, each one providing clues as to the big picture. However, the novel ends with several key pieces of evidence unaccounted for and a few other significant loose ends, leaving an opening for a fifth novel.

City of Secrets kept my attention throughout as well as fueling my curiosity as to what was going to occur next. As the reader, we have the benefit of information that the detectives are lacking. Ultimately, how everything will play out will have to wait until Book #5. I’m looking forward to reading more novels in this series by PJ Tracy.

This book is rife with crime and conspiracy. While I found the beginning interesting, overall, I found the story and the characters to be a bit disjointed to me. This may be because I came in later in the series and should have started with the 1st book to get the flow of the characters and storyline.

This is the 4th book in a series that I haven’t read. When I was given the book, I was told it was a “standalone installment” so I accepted it. I need to be upfront and tell you that I disagree with that and only recommend this book if you have read the other books in the series. Whereas I thought the storyline and mystery were good, without all the backstories that were alluded to, it’s easy to feel a little lost while reading. I also had an issue keeping all the characters straight. I felt like everyone had at least 2 names they went by – sometimes it was just their first name, sometimes it was their last name, and other times it was a nickname. Maybe if I’d read the other 3 books I would know the characters better to more easily go from one name to another but as a person thrown into an existing series with many characters, it was hard to keep track. These are the issues that make it only an OK read rather than a really good read for me personally. I’m sure others that have been following the series have much higher praise because again, the storyline and mystery were good. It’s piqued my interest enough that I will be putting the 1st in the series on my TBR to give the series a proper try.

Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the complimentary copy of this book. As always, the opinions expressed within this review are completely my own.
