Dez Limerick #3

Chain Reaction

Rate this book
Dez Limerick, a man of many skills and a murky past, faces the impossible—a skilled, deadly opponent who anticipates his every move.

Desmond Aloysius Limerick ("Dez" to his friends and close personal enemies) is a man with a shadowy past, certain useful hard-won skills, and, if one digs deep enough, a reputation as a good man to have at your back. He was trained as a "gatekeeper"—he can open any door, keep it open as long as necessary, and control who does—and does not—go through. Now retired from his previous life, Dez still tries to keep his skills up to date.

Knocking around the country, picking up the occasional gig as a guitarist, Dez is contacted by a friend in urgent need of his musical skills. At his behest, Dez flies to the East Coast to a gig at the brand new massive complex, the Liberty Center. But he's barely landed before he finds himself in the midst of a terrorist attack, a group has taken over the whole center and thousands of hostage lives are in danger. With the semi-willing help of a talented thief, Dez takes on the impossible task of outfighting and outwitting a literal army. But that's just the beginning, as Dez learns he was actually lured there under false pretenses, by someone who knows more about Dez, his past and his skills than any living person should.

The third book in James Bryne’s Dez Limerick series, Chain Reaction, is a riveting thriller filled with some twists, good characterization, and excellent world-building. Dez has a shadowy past and a good person to have on your side. He’s been trained as a gatekeeper capable of opening any door, keeping it open as long as necessary, and controlling who does and doesn’t go through it. Though retired, he keeps his skills up to date.

He also picks up an occasional gig as a guitarist. When he is texted by a friend in need of his musical skills, Dez flies to New Jersey for the gig at the new opening of the Liberty Center. He’s barely there when the complex is taken over by an armed militia and thousands of hostages are in danger. With the help of a somewhat-willing thief, Cat Valdivia, he works to save the hostages and outwit the militia. However, all is not what it seems.

Besides Dez’s skills as a gatekeeper and musician, he is innovative, has an attitude of positivity, and generally avoids guns. He deflects rather than talk about himself, but his other skills include chemistry, computers, and engineering. Readers also get insight into Cat and a few of the other secondary characters including some of the antagonists and the FBI hostage negotiator.
While the book mainly takes place in and around New York City, there are scenes from Madrid, Spain and upstate New York. While the book is descriptive, it doesn’t adversely affect the pacing. The novel begins with a riveting prologue that lures readers into the fantastic thriller.

I was intrigued by the characters, the plot, and the idea of a gatekeeper. Additionally, it was fascinating to have a protagonist in a thriller that didn’t rely on guns. The author was innovative in this respect. While some scenes are over-the-top, I went with the flow and enjoyed it.

Overall, this was a twisty, fast-paced, and engrossing thriller. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series as well as go back and read the first two books featuring Dez.

St. Martin’s Press – Minotaur Books and James Byrne provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for January 28, 2025.

HE’S BAAACK!!! I love Dez!!! He is such a great character and his escapades and shenanigans always make me laugh, making this series a very entertaining one. Byrne has once again made it easy to become so endeared with Dez and his easy-going attitude, amusing wit, silly flirtations and razor-sharp skills and abilities. Dez is the kind of guy that when in a jam, I would never worry about him not getting out unscathed because he is wicked smart and incredibly resourceful. This is reflected perfectly in the prologue when Bryne has Dez doing just that in one of his gatekeeper assignments 18 months ago, when he not only got him and his client out a really dangerous situation, but he also got the couple that was trying to scam his client out of the same jam.

Anyway, the book summary lays out the primary storyline of the terrorist attack at the Liberty Center. What the book summary doesn’t say is that prior to the take over at the Center, Dez runs into Cat, one of the thiefs that he helped escape 18 months ago. With Cat’s help, along with a few other folks, the terrorists are taken down. In typical Dez fashion, Dez made sure the terrorists he encountered never got back up. However, there are other folks that were actually targeting Dez and a select few of the hostages and the terrorists were just pawns in a greater scheme. These folks are not pleased that Dez and Cat twarted their plans and they proceed to go after Dez and Cat. This does not please Dez at all; come after him all you want, but prepare for battle if you go after his friends.

Most of the first half of the story revolves around the terrorist attack and the second half zeroes in on Dez going after the folks that came for him and Cat. It turns out that an ex-lover, Liv, who is also a gatekeeper, is also part of an the internation group of assassins that was hired to kill Dez. In typical Dez fashion, he is ALWAYS one step ahead of Liv and her bunch and makes it perfectly clear to her that while she may be smarter than him, he will always be the better gatekeeper than her. The intense and explosive ending being the perfectly played example of just that.

The continuing charater development of Dez has been entertaining. I love the way that Bryne gives us glimpses of Dez’s past when he was an active gatekeeper and moved from one assignment to another collecting favors, discovering comrades and perfecting his skills and abilities to his present life of retirement where he spends his time picking up guitar gigs and helping out friends who need his kind of assistance. The story line was steady to fast and never drags with a storyline that entertains with it’s off the wall elements and characters. The writing was classic Bryne, and on par for the series with the near perfect blend of wit, intrigue and suspense. However, there was one passage (towards the end), regarding one of the targeted survivors of the terrorist attack, that I found rather disturbing. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.4 that I will be rounding down to a 4star read. I want to thank NetGalley and RB Media for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

CHAIN REACTION is the third book in the highly acclaimed Dez Limerick series and in my opinion, the best yet! Author James Byrne has firmly established himself as one of the top writers in the espionage thriller genre with this explosive, action-packed series featuring a dynamite character with deadly skills, keen mind, strong sense of right and wrong, and a wry sense of humor as well as a love of music and an eye for the ladies. Set aside your to-do list before starting this page burner. I promise you’ll find it impossible to put down.

Desmond Aloysius Limerick aka "Dez" is a larger-than-life former military "secret" trained as a highly skilled gatekeeper - now retired unless he's called upon to help a friend or innocent victim. His skill set doesn't mesh well within the confines of society's rules, and he's often found on the outskirts of events, silently observing, evaluating people and situations. Dez enjoys playing gigs with musicians when he has the opportunity and jumps at the chance to fill in with a band at the grand opening of the Liberty Center in New Jersey; however, he quickly finds himself in the middle of a Russian terrorist attack when the Center is sieged and thousands of lives endangered. Dez solicits the aid of a reluctant former adversary, Cat, a master thief, and with her aid and his wit and unique skills, they rush headfirst into the impossible task of defeating, or at the least waylaying, an army. A puzzling chain of events occur in the days following the attack that don't add up and being a numbers guy Dez's seriously disturbed when two plus two doesn't equal four. Evidence indicates Dez and others were lured to the convention center under false pretenses by someone as highly skilled as he is . . . but Dez only knew one person that fit the criteria and she's dead. Isn't she?

CHAIN REACTION is an blistering, high octane espionage thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from cover to cover. Byrne brilliantly manipulates characters and readers through pages of revelations at a breakneck pace. Fans of the series will enjoy getting more insight into Dez's background even as they marvel at the extent of his inventive skills at turning everyday objects into deadly weapons and overcoming insurmountable odds--all with a slightly warped sense of humor. Support characters are well developed, including a couple of strong-headed women who could be worthy friends or formidable adversaries – the jury remains out on which one Dez can trust. Magnificently written and delivered, fans of high-action, high-stake espionage thrillers will enjoy CHAIN REACTION and this new, highly skilled hero "Dez" who’s a combo of Macgyver and Jack Reacher on steroids! This one would be sensational on the big screen!

This is the third book in the Dez Limerick series and I really enjoy the series and the interesting main character Dez.

Description:

My Thoughts:
With this Dez Limerick series I learned quickly that I will never be bored. These books are full of action that starts immediately and never lets up. Dez is one of very few who are known as gatekeepers - they have the skill to open any door and control who can go through. This works out in some things you wouldn't think about. This team-up with the thief seemed to work well. Dez supplies the quirky character and lends the book quite a lot of humor. I had fun reading this book. Anyone who likes action-packed intrigue would enjoy this series.

Dez Limerick is one of my favorite fictional characters. I don’t read a ton of thrillers but I love this series. Dez is quirky with a ton of skills and lots of ingenuity, both of which help him survive very crazy situations. He is considered a gatekeeper. It may sound odd that a thriller made me laugh, but Dez has a great sense of humor and his British expressions make for some rather puzzled people in the US.

In this third book of the series, most of the action takes place in New Jersey, New York City and way upstate New York - with a bit in Italy thrown in as well. A huge entertainment/shopping/conference center has opened in New Jersey, adjacent to Newark International Airport. (Although I haven’t yet visited there, it reminded me of the new American Dream complex not too far from where this is supposed to be.) Dez is there because he has received a message from a musician friend, asking him to fill in for his bassist who is sick, at a concert connected with the opening of this new Liberty Center. He finds himself in the midst of a terrorist attack on the center and uses his many skills to help outwit the perpetrators. The plot is complex but easy to follow.

Two female characters are introduced in this book and I loved them both. Cat (Catalina) is a thief and she winds up helping Dez with her own, very different, skills. I really hope she will show up in a future book because she and Dez made a great pair. And Liv (Olivia) is a former colleague of Dez’s, also a superb gatekeeper, but her goals in life are completely opposite those of Dez. She’s a great opponent.

Because I listened to the previous two books via audiobook, I could “hear” Dev’s voice even though I was reading this one, not listening to it. (If an audiobook version of this comes out, I highly recommend it!) It took me a bit longer than I would have liked to finish Chain Reaction because life got in the way. Otherwise I would have happily sped through it.

You can read this as a standalone, but of course you would have a better understanding of Dez and his background if you’ve read the other two books also.

Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

When I read this author’s second novel last year, Deadlock, I was blown away. His main character in these novels, Dez, is not only a trip to read, but he is the type of main character you did not know you were missing.

I have been reading espionage and crime thrillers for 40 years and trust me when I say this book is no ordinary espionage thriller. Byrne has created a masterful character with an interesting history, a love of music and women, who has a tough time saying no to helping a friend.

Dez is inventive with a sense of humor that comes out in his craft. He is fast on the uptake and brilliant in how his mind works. With fast-paced action and intricate detail that comes at you, Byrne delivers a book that you do not want to put down.

Chain Reaction offers so many twists you find you need to force yourself to slow down and absorb every detail as you might need to remember it later. The secondary characters are fabulous and add so much to the ride. Cat is a fabulous addition and I hope to see her in future stories!

All in all, this book is a treat to read. Brilliant and fun with explosive twists that keep you on your toes and begging for more! The most entertaining thriller you will ever read with the most fun-loving character in Dez. You simply have to check out this series if you love crime thrillers.

Chain Reaction by James Byrne is the third and latest book about the Gatekeeper Dez Limerick. I was so pleasantly surprised when i stumbled upon book two in this series that I only read the first chapter and then immediately bought the first adventure to read them in order. Dez is a great invention of Byrnes and the idea of the gatekeeper is brilliant. The stories are fast paced and filled with both action and humor as well as some tricky situations for Desmond. This third book is no exception, it is a great mystery with some fantastic new characters and I can't recommend it enough. I must thank Minotaur Books , Macmillan and Edelweiss for giving me this advance copy of a book that hits the shelves in January 2025.

The newest protagonist you should know is Desmond Aloysius Limerick, courtesy of James Byrne's big brain. Dez is a "Gatekeeper" -- a member of an elite society who can open any door, keep it open, and control who enters or leaves until his choosing. Dez is truely unique.

The way Dez speaks is unusual and takes some time to adapt to. Imagine, if you will, the most Irish accent you can imagine but in print. Aside from that Dez -- and this series -- are fantastic and shouldn't be missed.

I'd like to thank Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read a galley of Chain Reaction via NetGalley.

Third book in the Desmond Aloysius Limerick series and he's just as much a delight as in the previous 2.

Dez is lured to a convention center by a message from an old friend to sit in on a gig playing with a group of old friends. But even though the gig is real the invite wasn't actually made by who he received it from.

What appears to be a terrorist event is in actuality coverage for something completely different and Dez is the monkey wrench in the works.

Desmond Aloysius Limerick, better known as Dez to his mates, is a 'gatekeeper,' whose training is in 'beginnings and gates, transitions and time, duality and doors, passages and endings.' He is probably the most unusual protagonist of any thriller you'll read. James Byrne also writes strong female characters--be they cat burglars, FBI agents or assassins. The story starts off with a bang and is nonstop action from start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed this third installment in the series and highly recommend.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an arc of this new thriller. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

This was my first Dez Limerick book—-what a fun character! He’s totally unpredictable and a man of many talents. This is the third book in a series, but I had no trouble following it as a standalone.

Dez is enlisted? to fill in as a musician with a band at the Liberty Center grand opening in New Jersey. However, it’s quickly apparent that all is not as it seems because he’s in the middle of a Russian terrorist attack, and whoever orchestrated this situation has not been revealed. Dez is a guy who keeps moving, with no grass growing under his feet: in fact, that seems to be his motto—-always be a moving target! The rest of the story involves his decisions and conclusions about who is nefarious and who is trustworthy.

This one involves high-stakes and nonstop action, and it’s well worth a read if that is your style!

Four glittering stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I received an ARC for the fourth Dez Limerick book, and didn't realize there had been a third!

Listening to the audiobook was a bit of an experience. Ruari was *good* but even as someone that spent three+ years almost exclusively talking to British people, I can for the life of me not understand some of the things he said. And if he can't drop the accent for the American characters, they should have used two narrators. Despite that gripe, I think he has a good voice for the story.

Story wise, this is another action packed novel with huge plots and tons of snark. I didn't quite believe that the characters were in Fulton NY for a bit, like what, the FBI at Northern Ace Home Center the hardware store?? LoL! I was absolutely shocked to learn that James Byrne is American, apparently from Oregon! Anyway, besides that leap of faith, I really did enjoy the story overall.

I love the Dez and Liv dynamic. One of my favorite action tropes is two people of equal skills facing off and this one definitely delivered, with one character for chaotic good and the other for ... I don't know, neutral evil? Dez is such a wildcard and you never know what he's going to whip up next to get the job done. As the plot kept thickening it was hard to stop!

I can't wait to read book four, coming in 2026!

Dez Limericks is a gatekeeper which is someone that can open any door keep it open and he gets caught in a terrorist attack at the liberty in Newark airport . Dez can't not help so he ends up getting involved and he works with the FBI to free the hostages but this is only the beginning.
This book was funny with a cute cast of sarcastic characters as well as being suspenseful and very twisty. I couldn't figure out why they had to do the heist till the bitter end. It was a wild ride.

Chain Reaction is the Third installment in author James Byrne's Dez Limerick series. The story opens 18 months ago, with Dez in Madrid, Spain, with a man named Jamison. He is there to meet with an alleged Professor and his assistant for a formula that would be revolutionary, but it turns out to be a scam. Dez is trained as a gatekeeper capable of opening any door, keeping it open as long as necessary, and controlling who does and doesn’t go through it. Though retired, he keeps his skills up to date.

Desmond Aloysius Limerick ("Dez" to his friends and close personal enemies) is a gatekeeper. He can open anything and keep it open. He is trying to retire. Left England, moved to California and now plays gigs with musicians he favors. He is invited to perform at the opening of a new convention center in New Jersey. He is excited to go because his band will be opening for one of his all-time guitar heroes. However, he finds himself in the midst of a terrorist attack, a Russian dissident group trying to free a battleship that has been appropriated by the US military. Bodies are dropping, but Dez, being Dez, manages to bring the siege to an end with the assistance of one of his former adversaries, who is a master thief. But, out of curiosity, Dez discovers not all of the bodies were killed by Russian guns; some were killed by a different gun. Why? Dez decides to investigate, along with the FBI. Soon, the master thief is back in his life because her home is under siege by the same Russian group. It seems Dez is being stalked and he does not know why. James Byrne writes a stellar book, this is the third in this series and it is just as good as the first two. Dez is complex and complicated man who is trying to do good. He has a very specific skill set that does not translate well into corporate life, so he remains outside of society no matter how hard he tries to blend. Highly recommended, especially if you like adrenaline reads.

Book three in the Dez Limerick series, and another really fun ride. I tore through this one quickly because I kept wanting to see what Dez would do next. The action is definitely over the top at times, but that’s part of the charm.

What keeps me coming back is the humour and personality. Dez is such a unique and entertaining character, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of this series so far. I’m already looking forward to the next one, even if it looks like it won’t be out until January 2026.

Enjoyed this one tremendously. Might be a personal preference, but it hit the mark for me.

Thrilling, suspenseful, and twisty!

Chain Reaction is a tight, menacing tale that takes you back into the life of ex-mercenary Desmond Aloysius Limerick as he finds himself once again caught up in a world of terror when his invitation to perform a gig at the Liberty Center goes immediately sideways.

The writing is compelling and edgy. The characters are sly, secretive, and resourceful. And the plot is an intense, sinister tale filled with twists, turns, mayhem, coercion, politics, power, obsession, lies, secrets, drama, revenge, and murder.

Overall, Chain Reaction is an action-packed, intricate, riveting tale by Byrne, and as a huge fan of this unlikely hero who oozes sex appeal, danger, and charisma, all I can say is I WANT MORE!

Even though this is the third book in the series, I think that this is actually my favorite book. While I liked Dez in the first two books, there seemed to be something that kept me from REALLY liking him. Whatever that was, it wasn't there in this book and I found myself really enjoying him as a character-quirky flaws and all.

This book was a really fast paced, action packed suspenseful drama that starts off with a bang and just keeps building from there. Dez finds himself in the middle of a HUGE terrorist situation, and he luckily runs into a woman who he knew in his past. This woman has a particular set of skills that works really well with his skills and the pair end up helping to resolve the situation.

In this book, Dez works closely with several people, but especially with several strong women - a particularly talented cat burglar and a Special Agent with the FBI. Then, there is a nemesis that has decided to pit themself against Dez in a contest that he doesn't even know that he is involved in.

I really loved following along as everything unfolded. There was action, drama, and some massively crazy twists that kept me completely invested throughout the entire book.

My thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for an advance copy of this novel about a man with a particular set of skills, on the bass guitar, with computers, locks and doors and gates, and an ability to find himself in the right place, at the right time and doing the right thing.

Growing up I was a portly child, with bad eyesight, a complete lack of interest in sports, and other manly pursuits. So I read Men's Adventure books. They aren't as prevalent now, but in the seventies, maybe to the early nineties, the book shelves used to be loaded with what was basically men's romance novels. Every month, especially when Harlequin took over Pinnacle books, there would be fresh stories about grim men, killing the enemies of America. Death Merchant, The Survivor, Tracks, The Destroyer, and the one that started it all , Mack Bolan, The Executioner. I read them all, even ones that were so bad that they remain in my memory for their absolute horribleness. Gradually as more armchair warriors were created through the politics of America Men's Adventure books began to become the thriller books of today. Lee Child, Vince Flynn, like to claim James Bond as their inspiration, but many of these read like like Mack Bolan books, except longer than the 197 pages the books were mandated to be. Lone man, kills a lot of people. Moves on. While interesting these stories are what they are. Few try to buck the conventions, and challenge the ideas of what these stories can be, or how their heroes can be made more interesting. Smarter. Able to pick fights, or even to ignore fights, when it doesn't make sense. That is why I have been enjoying the books written by James Byrne featuring Desmond Aloysius Limerick. Dez, to his friends, and he has friends, unlike many, is funny, interesting, with a mysterious background, but a guy who does what he does now because he wants to, and because he knows he can get people out, if he has too. Chain Reaction is the third in the series, and is a story that starts immediately and doesn't let up until the last page, filled with characters who real, and tons of action, and great writing.

Desmond Aloysius Limerick, Dez to those lucky to know him gets a panic text message to fill in for a sick member or a friend's crew. In the old days this could have meant anything, now its to be a replacement bass player for a bar band with a chance to open for a music legend. Dez agrees and travels East to the great state of New Jersey, where a grand new convetion center, one of the largest ever built is having its grand opening. Music events, fine dining, comic book conventions, and more await, and Dez is amazed at the place and the people. Especially the fact that so many military-looking men are walking around. Soon things go bad, and the convention center is seized by terrorists who lock the place down, and threaten the thousands of people inside. As Dez does what he does best, he finds out that what seems like a simple act of extortion might be something more. Something that might tie back to someone in Dez's past, one that Dez thought he had left a knife in.

Third books have a habit of coasting, but Byrne shows no sign of this here. This book ups the ante, adding more characters, more of a back story and lots of ultraviolence. And humor. Which adds to a great read. Not only is the writing good, the characters seem real. People with pasts, and with futures that one wants to read about. Dez is a lot of fun, a guy who can fight the fight, but also can step away and let others to what they have to. The story is very good, and what is better fits well in to what we have learned, or for new readers, a way for them to catch-up. Byrne mixes real world politics, business, and an eye for locations that really give the novels a rich setting to set the scene. The action is different too. One won't look at superballs the same way.

A great story to lose oneself in, with a story that really holds up, with clues, and information shared fairly. This is the third book, but one can start this and get a good feeling for the story. And go back and read the others. I can't wait to read more stories about Dez, and his many friends, and enemies.

Desmond Aloysius Limerick (“Dez”) has retired from a shadowy past of military and intelligence work at age 35.

With a sexy British/Irish accent to die for and all the dark humor, intelligence, and wit making DEZ, Desmond Aloysius Limerick the ultimate gatekeeper. A former mercenary, a musician, and a man who can open any door— physical or digital.

The book opens with an intense and action-packed scene set eighteen months earlier in Madrid, Spain, setting the stage for a thrilling and suspenseful journey.

Dez is in Portland, Oregon, when he gets invited to an upcoming show in Newark. He has been in the state in LA, picking up musical gigs as a bass player and pianist. He and his band have been invited to open for Calvin Willow (63), a rock legend from the 80s-90s. (one of four opening acts).

He travels with a Vietnam-era surplus duffel bag for his clothes and lots of black T-shirts, jeans, and jackets with lace-up boots. He also has a Gibson Ripper bass guitar, a big tablet, and a big phone.

The venue is at the Liberty Convention Center, which has over 2.2 million sq ft of space with hotels, bars, shops, and restaurants.

Soon after his arrival, the complex is taken over by an armed militia, and thousands of hostages are in danger. A Russian terrorist attack! The Newark Police, New Jersey State Police, and the National Guard are all on standby. And the FBI. Civilians are dead.

With the help of 'Cat' Catalina Valdivia, a skilled thief, Dez works tirelessly to save the hostages and outwit the militia, showcasing his heroic nature and determination.

But was this invitation planned to get him here? Who lured him here under false pretenses?

My thoughts...

Highly entertaining! I fell in love with Dez in the first book, THE GATEKEEPER, and then again in DEADLOCK. I was thrilled to catch up with him again in CHAIN REACTION. Bryne has created a razor-sharp, stand-out superhero with a unique skill set who keeps you laughing with his wit and charm. He is quirky, smart, and witty.

You will be hooked on this twisty, fast-paced, electrifying thriller from the Prologue. EXPLOSIVE! Dez is a class act, and I love to see him in action and all the supporting fun characters.

From the past (24 years ago) to the present, you will want to solve the puzzle after the chain of events following the attack that do not quite add up under pretenses. Who is behind it? It took someone skilled, but Dez knows that person is supposed to be dead, or is she?

From mystery, suspense, action, a high-stake espionage thriller! CHAIN REACTION has it all with a hero you want by your side in a disaster.

As a fan of the series, I eagerly await the next installment. The series has the potential to be a hit on the big or small screen, and I can't wait to see what comes next!

Recs...

For fans of the series, the author and those who enjoy works by David Baldacci, Lee Child's Jack Reacher, Greg Hurwitz (Orphan X series), and Janet Evanovich's Ranger (Stephanie Plum series).

He's the right man to have in the wrong place

Desmond (Dez to his mates) Limerick is always happy to help out a friend, so when musician pal Jack O'Herlihy texts him with an emergency SOS for to fill in for his band's sick guitarist Dez says yes. As he flies across the country to NJ where the gig will take place he discovers that the band will be opening for a legendary performer, one of the best guitarists in the history of rock and one of Dez's idols. Even better! But Dez is not your average musician eking out an existence by picking up gigs when and where he can....he is recently retired from a far different career, one in the military where he was trained to be what is known as a gatekeeper. He was in charge of opening things, keeping them open as needed, and controlling who could pass through. Doors, computer portals, and anything in between, Dez was the guy who'd be called to make happen what was needed, and he was one of if not the best in the business. So when he strolls into the brand new convention center where he is to stay and where the band is to perform, he is also the kind of person to notice pairs of men who don't seem to blend in with the rest of the people milling about. He soon finds himself in the midst of a large scale hostage taking operation that is getting ugly fast. With the somewhat reluctant help of a talented thief named Cat whose path has crossed his before, he becomes the wrench (spanner) in the works that ultimately foils the hostage takers. But there was another nefarious plan unfolding within the conference center, one headed by someone who knows Dez and his former trade only too well, and Dez and Cat have their work cut out for them if they are to figure out whom they are up against and what the motive and end game are.
This is the third outing of a very talented and lethal man with a wicked sense of humor and an ability to strategize a successful way (usually multiple ways) into and out of any scenario which presents itself. Those who underestimate him soon regret having done so...picture a mash-up of MacGyver, and Jack Reacher with a dash of Ricky Gervais, and that's Dez. But for all the humor that presents as well as vocabulary and terms from across the pond to decipher, the thriller itself is deadly serious. Villains of both the psychopathic and venal variety, a series of victims seemingly with nothing in common but their deaths, and members of law enforcement who appreciate and gladly utilize Dez's talents (even as his refusal to color consistently within the lines drives them mad) are threaded throughout the tale, which starts out with a Bond-esque scene that later leads to the cat and mouse game between Dez and another gatekeeper. Fast paced, quick witted, and cleverly plotted, Chain Reaction is an absolute delight to read for those who have read the earlier books in the series (though this can be read as a standalone quite easily, I highly recommend going back and reading the first two if you enjoy this one as much as I suspect you will) as well as fans of authors like Lee Child, Gregg Hurwitz and Mark Greaney. Dez Limerick has become one of my favorite protagonists since I first discovered him in The Gatekeeper and I eagerly await a fourth installment of his escapades. Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books for allowing me access to Chain Reaction in exchange for my honest review.

My thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur Books/St.Martin's Publishing for the ARC of 'Chain Reaction' in exchange for an honest review.

A 5 star Welcome Back to the unstoppable Dez Limerick, wandering soldier-of-fortune, cheeky knight errant, and whenever he can pick up a gig, an ace band guitarist. Not to mention his best quality (and the reason I can't wait till each of his new adventures comes out).....he's the scourge of global villainy and thorough thwarter of armies of terrorists.

This time around, he's up against a deadly combination of Russians and a mysterious assassination consortium who require some serious Dez-struction.

Dez shows up at the grand opening of a vast new shopping-entertainment complex, thinking he's been invited to play in a band. But the invite's nothing but a phony lure and he finds himself in the middle of a full scale invasion by Russian terrorists. With the goons shooting innocent hostages, you just know our man Dez, master of all deadly combat skills, won't sit still for it.

Now this is where I start keeping my mouth shut about all the non-stop action and twists and turns that follow Dez and his new unlikely ally Cat Valdivia, a drop dead gorgeous master thief......other than to say they find themselves facing an adversary who more than matches (and may well surpass) Dez Limerick's gift for outfighting and outwitting any opponents. All that's left to say.....buckle up and prepare to spin through the pages as fast as the flying bullets.

Everything and anything a lover of action-adventure could ever want in one book is all here.......with no end of fun watching the ever affable Dez wade through thugs, plotters and surprises with his 'particular set of skills', (including deadpan wit and a talent for finding makeshift lethal weapons when there's no gun available. And woe to anyone who dares underestimate him.

I can't praise this series highly enough. And for those anxiously awaiting news of a new James Bond movie, here's your best option for enjoying just as much thrills and some wicked humor......join up with Team Dez.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I picked this up because it looked like a good, fun action book where the over powered good guys thwarts the bad guys. It reminded me of the concept of the Jack Reacher books which are just easy, fun books that move fast and are good escapist books. I do think that there will be overlap in the audiences that enjoy those books with this one. It also reminded me a little of the Die Hard movies except the main character is not an everyday sort of guy. He's had extra training to take on the spies, terrorists and assassins.

Having not read any of the prior in this series I went in fairly blind. The action hits you right away. The pacing is strong throughout the book and you are propelled through this story. The characters are not especially fleshed out and it was about half way through the book before I realized Dez was British and not Irish (or at least I think that is the case). We really do not know a whole lot about Dez save that he is amazing at many, many things because of being something called a Gatekeeper in his past though we have no idea what that means. His character could have used a little fleshing out but that might be my fault for having picked up this book mid series. Some of his character might have been fleshed out in prior books. At any rate, we watch him get out of impossible jams and trials to thwart the bad guys.

It's a swashbuckling good time where you just know the good guys will come up on top. That's exactly what I expected/wanted and that's what I got. I wouldn't advise reading this for the characters themselves as they are more stock characters but I find that is often the case for this genre of books. Also, Dez talks in a lot of slang which took a bit to adjust to as it made him sound a little cartoonish when I first began reading. Once I found a rhythm though that faded a little into the background.

This is for people who want to read high stakes adventures where the overpowered good guy wins. Sometimes in life that is exactly the story you want and need. It is not my main fare but nice for a break between other genres.

A Thrilling Ride from Start to Finish: A Five-Star Review of Chain Reaction

James Byrne's Chain Reaction is a pulse-pounding thriller that grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. This isn't your typical action-packed fare; Byrne has crafted a genuinely clever and engaging story with a truly memorable protagonist.

Dez, our "box truck of a man," isn't your stereotypical action hero. He's a humble "gatekeeper," a man who prefers to stay in the shadows, yet possesses a sharp mind and a surprising knack for outwitting his adversaries. Dez is the kind of character you instantly root for – a quiet observer who, when pushed, reveals a remarkable capacity for action and strategic thinking. His down-to-earth nature makes him incredibly relatable, even as he's thwarting mass assassination attempts and dismantling complex conspiracies.

The plot is a masterclass in suspense. Byrne expertly weaves together multiple threads, keeping the reader guessing at every turn. The tension ratchets up as Dez teams up with the capable FBI agent Stella Ansara to resolve a tense hostage situation. Their dynamic is one highlight of the book; a compelling partnership built on mutual respect and a shared determination to bring down the elusive Thiago. Thiago, the orchestrator of hired hits, is a chillingly effective antagonist, pulling the strings from the shadows and presenting a formidable challenge for Dez and Stella.

What truly sets Chain Reaction apart is Byrne's ability to balance high-octane action with genuine character development. The action sequences are thrilling and vividly described, but they never overshadow the human element of the story. Dez's intelligence and resourcefulness are showcased brilliantly as he consistently outmaneuvers his opponents, sometimes through brute force, but mostly through clever planning and a deep understanding of human nature.

Chain Reaction is a must-read for any fan of thrillers. It's a captivating story with a unique hero, a compelling plot, and a satisfying conclusion. James Byrne has delivered a five-star read that will leave you eagerly anticipating his next work. Highly recommended!

SPOILER ALERT

Once again, Byrne tells a riveting and fast tale of terrorism and theft. Desmond Aloysius Limerick is lured to New York to play in a band, only to find himself in the middle of terrorist hostage taking at the new mammoth Liberty Convention Center. He also finds a compatriot in Catalina Valdivia, Cat, who he met in a previous case. They combine their many and varied skills to overcome the blocked communications and wired building/hostages to end the seige. In the process he becomes a friend of FBI Hostage Negotiator Stella Ansara, who will request his help in solving the case of who these Russians were and who the assassins were who killed three people at the seige.

They will determine that a former gatekeeper, one trained at the same time as Dez, Liv Gelman, and her partner, Ray Hawker, both part of the Thiago Group, involved in assassinations, were the assassins. They are after the largest contract ever made; one aimed at six people. Gelman and Hawker are then proceeding to go after the other three in the contract. Jonas Diedrich, head of the Flag Family Holdings, who is in line to take over the organization when the Frankfurt Landesbank AG goes under, has hired the killings. He had led a hunting business in his youth, which took paid hunters to the abandoned plant for Panthera cars, which had failed and contributed to the European recession in the 1970s, and was huge, where they hunted a man. They had all six participated in the killing. Diedrich is now afraid one of them might reveal his secret.

Liv is after the entire multi-million dollar payout, poisoning Hawker. She had lured the Russian Leningrad Konsortsium renegade group to the Center, where they had demanded that a ship, the Kocatka, be released. It had been seized by the US Navy. She had not intended that they succeed. By not accomplishing the six killings, she had control over the payout until Ray was dead. The Russians were paying her $5 million.

Once again, Liv escapes, the Russians are captured, and the Russians kill the three men, a Chinese, a French and a Texan who ran Thiago. Liv lives to challenge Dez another day.

Excellent.
