Hotel Laguna

Rate this book
In 1942, Hazel Francis left Wichita, Kansas for California, determined to do her part for the war effort. At Douglas Aircraft, she became one of many “Rosie the Riveters,” helping construct bombers for the U. S. military. But now the war is over, men have returned to their factory jobs, and women like Hazel have been dismissed, expected to return home to become wives and mothers.

Unwilling to be forced into a traditional woman’s role in the Midwest, Hazel remains on the west coast, and finds herself in the bohemian town of Laguna Beach. Desperate for work, she accepts a job as an assistant to famous artist Hanson Radcliff. Beloved by the locals for his contributions to the art scene and respected by the critics, Radcliff lives under the shadow of a decades old scandal that haunts him.

Working hard to stay on her cantankerous employer’s good side, Hazel becomes a valued member of the community. She never expected to fall in love with the rhythms of life in Laguna, nor did she expect to find a kindred spirit in Jimmy, the hotel bartender whose friendship promises something more. But Hazel still wants to work with airplanes―maybe even learn to fly one someday. Torn between pursuing her dream and the dream life she has been granted, she is unsure if giving herself over to Laguna is what her heart truly wants.

Hi, Thanks for stopping by to visit. I'm the author of three works of historical fiction, HOTEL LAGUNA (June, 2023) MONTAUK and THE SHOW GIRL. I'm originally from Hampshire, England, and moved to California when I was 14. I studied Literature at UCLA and received an MFA in creative writing at Stony Brook University. Soon after college I moved to NYC and worked in magazine publishing. I was the fashion and style staff writer for Forbes and had a weekly column at Lucky Magazine. I spent many summers in Montauk, which inspired my first novel, but after 17 years in the Big Apple I recently moved back to California and have settled in Manhattan Beach with my husband, two sons and two chihuahuas. When I'm not writing I love to paddle board, do yoga and get outside with my boys.

As the story begins we meet our protagonist, Hazel Francis in 1946 as she lands up in the coastal town of Laguna Beach, California, out of work after being laid off from a job at Douglas Aircraft, (one of many “Rosie the Riveters”) helping build fighter planes. Hazel is a small-town girl from Wichita, Kansas, having left her hometown in 1942 to do her bit contributing to the war effort in a job she truly enjoyed. Now that WWII is over and the men have returned from the front and reclaimed their spot in the workforce, Hazel finds it difficult to secure employment in the kind of work she enjoys and is good at. With no family left to go back to she ventures out on her own hoping to find her place in the world. She ends up taking a job as an Assistant to renowned artist Hanson Radcliff, whose eccentric personality takes a while to get used to. Hazel’s job description includes everything from modeling for her employer to running errands and helping out with the local art festival (Laguna Beach’s Pageant of the Masters, an actual event that was started in 1933, in which famous works of art are depicted through on-stage performances). Radcliffe is well respected in the art scene in the area and though their association is off to a bumpy start, Hazel develops a fondness for her elderly employer. With the help of Jimmy, the kind bartender at Hotel Laguna who befriends her and Hanson who eventually arranges for her to stay in an apartment behind the local art gallery in addition to her pay, Hazel begins to feel at home in Laguna Beach. As the narrative progresses we follow Hazel as she contends with her temperamental employer, comes to know of a scandal from Hanson's past that adversely impacted his reputation and continues to haunt him and tries to help Hanson cope with his past trauma and searches for a missing painting coveted by several individuals. Hazel has a lot on her plate, with the pageant coming up soon and her feelings for Jimmy complicating matters further.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hotel Laguna by Nicola Harrison. Hazel is an endearing protagonist. Strong and willful, she does make questionable choices and does get into a fair share of trouble but you can’t help rooting for her as tries to find her way in a world where opportunities for women were limited. The author does a wonderful job of crafting a story that gives us a sense of both time and place. I would have liked it if the segment on Hazel’s life during her stint at Douglas Aircraft would have been covered in more detail but given that the story revolves around Hazel and Hanson’s friendship, I understand why the emphasis was on Hazel’s life after the war ends. I loved the vibrant setting of Laguna Beach and the interesting cast of characters who made up the community (even the unlikeable ones). The pacing and the plot development were well executed and the ending. though bittersweet, was satisfying. Overall, this is an emotional, feel-good read with an element of mystery that touches upon themes of friendship, love, creativity and community.

I paired my reading with the superb audio narration by Carlotta Brentan which made for an entertaining immersion reading experience.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the digital review copy of this novel. I would also like to thank Macmillan Audio for the ALC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This gorgeous, vintage, summery cover. 😍 Hazel leaves her home in Kansas for California so she could serve as part of the war effort, helping make bombers for the military. When the war is over, men return to their typical jobs, and the women are expected to go back to traditional roles in the home.

Hazel does not wish to return home, and eventually lands in Laguna Beach where she finds a job working for a bohemian artist named Hanson Radcliff, who is hiding, with his crotchety nature, a scandal that hangs over his head. Hazel finds love with a bartender named Jimmy and some contentment in her work, though she still longs for more and a return to airplane work, even possibly flying.

You can’t help but love Hazel and her genuine connection with others along with her strength and self-advocacy. The setting is full of life, and the ending brought it all together so beautifully. Hotel Laguna was just the type of feel good read with tons of depth I needed right now and exactly the type of book I love most in the summer. Characters that shine, mystery elements, a touch of romance, with strong themes of friendship and the want for more and better. If you are looking for a reliable author, look no further than Nicola Harrison.

I received a gifted copy.

Harrison perfectly captures the breezy, sun-soaked landscape of Southern California in her latest, and approaches WWII fiction in an utterly unique way: from the point of view of a woman who found her bliss building planes while the men were off fighting, and then must reconfigure her identity when the jobs disappear. With its eccentric cast of characters and a beautifully layered plot, this is one unforgettable read.

4.5 glimmering stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Two things that I really enjoy in a good historical fiction novel are a strong female protagonist and a will to succeed. Hotel Laguna by Nicola Harrison provided both of those elements for me. During World War II, women were sought out to do their part for the war effort. A vast majority of women were recruited to do the factory jobs that were vacated by the men that were called up to fight or enlisted. These women became skilled and responsible workers but as soon as the war was over and the men returned they were easily dismissed. Even if their skills were equal to or better than the men they had replaced, their contributions were no longer needed. End of story. Women were expected to marry and have children. When the men returned they were given their jobs back no matter what. The women who had been doing these jobs were expected to go home to their husbands and have lots of children. These women would once again be expected to live their lives according to what society dictated. What if you were a woman who would rather work than live the kind of life everyone expected you to live? What would you do? That was the dilemma that Hazel Francis found herself in.

Hazel grew up in the Midwest, in Wichita, Kansas. After her mother died, Hazel found herself in a very compromising situation. She gave a boy who she had grown up with her whole life the wrong message. Hazel suddenly found herself engaged to a man who she did not love. He had been called up to serve his country. Hazel felt herself being forced into a situation that she couldn’t uphold. She had to escape. Having left a note of explanation, Hazel made her way from Kansas to California. Hazel was hired to work at Douglas Aircraft. She became quite skilled at assembling rivets that were used to build bombers for the U.S. military. As good as Hazel was at her job, she was out of a job as soon as the war was over and the men returned. No amount of pleading would change her circumstances.

Hazel overheard some people mention a town called Laguna Beach. She decided to try her luck there. Laguna Beach was an artsy town where a lot of artists lived. Hazel knew that she did not have unlimited funds so she needed to find a job quickly. She overheard some women discussing an artist who was looking for an assistant. They mentioned that he was looking for a woman who was thin and had a lot of energy. Hazel was willing to give it a try. Even though Hazel was not completely comfortable with everything her role as Mr. Radcliff’s assistant would entail she was willing to take a chance. Hazel would soon learn that Hanson Radcliff was not an easy man to work with. He could be quite the recluse and was often very moody. Hazel never knew what would set off one his moods and he would often dismiss her and possibly not to talk to her for several days. She did know that he was harboring a secret. Hazel had heard rumors about Hanson Radcliff being a suspect in an actress’s death. Hanson Radcliff had been the actress’s personal artist. Mr. Radcliff was offering Hazel a generous salary, though, and she needed the job. Hazel decided to take the job. Thus, began Hazel’s evolving relationship with artist, Hanson Radcliff. Mr. Radcliff generously put Hazel up at Hotel Laguna that first night. Hazel found her way to Hotel Laguna’s bar where she met Jimmy, the bartender. In no time at all Hazel found herself immersed in the close knit community of Laguna Beach. Her relationship with both Hanson Radcliff and with Jimmy would evolve into something that Hazel could not have predicted. The influence these two men had on Hazel’s life would allow her to go on and do things she probably wouldn’t have thought of doing or had had the courage to do before meeting them. They both impacted her life as she did theirs. Her relationship with both of these men was quite special.

I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook of Hotel Laguna by Nicola Harrison. It was well narrated by Carlotta Brentan. Women during this time in our history had a difficult time if they chose to go against the norms. I admired the courage of some women who chose to stand up for themselves and fight for what they believed were their rights. Hazel Francis was one of those women. Her character transformed over the course of this book. She gathered courage, determination and a stronger sense of self confidence as she was able to overcome some of her fears. Some of the underlying themes that were prevalent in Hotel Laguna were letting go of regrets, long buried secrets, a scandal that was yet to be resolved, friendships, love, generosity, trust, loyalty and the realization of one’s own dreams. I highly recommend this book.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to the audiobook of Hotel Laguna by Nicola Harrison through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

4.5/5⭐️This is the most bingeable historical fiction novel I have ever read. Set primarily after World War Two, the story focuses on a young artist struggling to build a life for herself after losing her job to returning soldiers. I loved the relationship that develops between Hazel and her mentor Hanson, and the fatherly role he eventually takes on. And the romance was chef’s kiss.

A really fun read, perfect for summer and fans of historical fiction who don’t like reading about war. Also excellent on audio.

Hazel leaves Wichita in 1942 in search of something more for her life. She arrives in California and works in the factory at Douglas Aircraft during WWII. When the war ends, men return home and Hazel is out of her job, but she doesn’t want to return to Wichita, a place where she has few fond memories left.

Hazel decides to give things a shot in the bohemian, art enthusiastic coastal town of Laguna Beach. She gets a job as an assistant to an artist, Hanson Radcliff, and becomes friends with Jimmy, a kind bartender at Hotel Laguna, where she stays when she first arrives in town. Hanson keeps a low profile and can be grumpy, but Hazel needs this job and becomes curious about his past as she hears more from others in the community.

Some elements of Hotel Laguna were predictable but I was still interested in it. I really enjoyed the setting of Laguna Beach, and the hotel, as well as the artistic elements throughout the book. I liked Hazel and think if I was around in 1942, I would have felt the same way she did about a lot of things.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing an advance reader copy of Hotel Laguna in exchange for an honest review.

Leaving her small town in Kansas, Hazel Francis wanted to find her way in California after losing her riveter job after the war ended. She winds up in Laguna Beach, where fate put into the employ of a famous artist Harrison Radcliff, who has a deep secret hanging over his head. There she meets Jimmy, a bartender and finds her heart is being tugged by love.

AS she and Harrison become closer, she learns his secret and becomes instrumental in clearing his name after Harrison passes away. Her dreams of working on aircraft disappears as her love deepens for Jimmy and the bucolic community she lives in.

A lovely ending brings this sweet book to a satisfying ending.

There is society, where none intrudes,

This is gorgeously written, captivating historical fiction set in two timelines: During World War II when women are being called into the workforce, and after World War II when the same women are forced to give up their jobs. I think of the earlier timeline more as flashbacks than a true dual timeline novel, as eventually the reader is only shown the post World War II timeline.

Forced out of her job as a riveter in Los Angeles, and with nowhere to go after the war ends, Hazel ends up in Laguna Beach as an assistant to a well-known artist, Hanson Radcliffe. Hanson is an alcoholic with a secret past. Determined to do a good job and also dealing with Hanson's many personality problems, Hazel doesn't want to reveal her own heartache--she has a secret past too.

I absolutely loved every bit of this book. Hazel's journey from lonely girl in Wichita to working with airplanes in Los Angeles seems to end sadly, but takes a new direction in Laguna Beach. I loved all of the quirky characters and the sense of community. The Pageant of the Masters is a real event in Laguna Beach, and it was a treat watching Hazel become part of it. I could see the live depictions of classic paintings come alive through the author's descriptions. The Laguna Hotel is also a big part of this book, and comes alive as almost a character unto itself.

This is a journey of discovery set in a magical place. I recommend it to everyone.

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for access to this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

I liked this book about a young woman who worked at a U.S. munitions factory during the war and in post-wartime searches for employment. Hazel Francis, the book's main protagonist is opinionated, hard-working and certainly doesn't let life knock her down. I admired her persistence to never take no for an answer.

At the beginning of the novel, chapters alternate between Hazel's war years and the present peacetime. Quickly, we gain the back story and the chapters are then all set in her new life as an artist's assistant. Hazel soon becomes interested in his past and tries to help him as much as she can. Hazel finds friendship with other secondary characters and the setting of Hotel Laguna is certainly charming.

Unfortunately, it didn't really hook me as a reader in any emotional sense. I read and watch a lot of wartime-era stories and Hazel felt to me to be very much the same as many other characters. I think I got caught up in assuming there was going to be something really big happening. Suffice it to say, there were things that occurred but I was left wanting a little bit more.

Hotel Laguna is a fabulous story about a young girl, Hazel who moved to California during WWII to work on airplanes during the war. Oh how I loved Hazel and how she went after what she wanted and she would not take no for an answer! After the war was over, they did away with her job so she found a job with an older man who was a famous painter and he made her his assistant. I loved everything about this historical fiction!!! This is a favorite of 2023 and I look forward to more books by this author. She’s fantastic! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. I went into this story knowing nothing about but was drawn to this title and cover! – I live in Southern California and ~I love Laguna Beach!

Hazel Francis, is a young woman from Wichita, Kansas who heads to California during WWII to work on airplanes at the Douglas Aircraft. However, once the war is over Hazel as well as other women now have lost their jobs to the men who have returned and women like Hazel are expected to return home to become wives and mothers. The women were expected to return to their home and tend to the children.
She finds herself in the beautiful bohemian town of Laguna Beach which is known as an artist colony. In fact, she becomes an assistant to an artist.
Story has a bit of a mystery. Hazel finds herself in the middle of some twists and turns but in the end she also finds a place to call home.

Awww trust me Laguna Beach is a beautiful place to call home. As mentioned it was known as a bohemian hippie town full of artists. Although still very much an artist colony, it is also a favorite tourist attraction. The beautiful beach is tucked into a cove; houses dot the cliff, delightful little shops, amazing restaurants that line the boardwalk. It is a quaint town and an artist dream as well as a great get-a-away. There is still the "Town Greeter’ (not sure if he is a relative but he acts the same as the original). The summer long “Pageant of the Masters’ is so unique and a must for tourist as well as locals. Still all volunteer and they never have a shortages of willing participants. Love the “The Art Festival ~ where only Laguna artists are allowed to display their work; of course, there are other summer Art Fairs!
BTW: There is a great little restaurant across the street from the Hotel Laguna called “The Place Across the Street”!

A captivating historical fiction novel about a young Kansas woman who goes West for work during WWII and later finds herself immersed in the California art scene in the post-war years.

I really enjoyed the live art plot line of the book and the emphasis on women finding their place in a male-dominated post-war America.

Great on audio narrated by Carlotta Brenton and definitely recommended for fans of authors like Kristin Hannah or Kelly Rimmer.

First, I need you all to know that I am pretty biased when it comes to Nicola Harrison novels. Her first, Montauk, was spectacularly beautiful. One of my favorite books of the year. With that said, Hotel Laguna not only matches the splendor and enjoyment of the first, but truly exceeds it. With a strong story which includes a mystery, long lost love, lessons in regret, with the focus on a strong woman who craves freedom during an era when that seemed impossible, it was certainly a cannot put it down read.

Hazel Francis was not afraid of much. She was from Kansas where during the war in 1942 she worked at Douglas Aircraft helping to build planes. With no family to go back to and a relationship she should never have begun, when the war was over, and they told her she should go back to her old life she chooses instead to start a new one by heading to California instead.

She finds herself in Laguna Beach, a beautiful artsy city with sun, sand and ocean. She ends up at a hotel called Hotel Laguna where she meets bartender, Jimmy, a go-getter who helps her as she tries to find a job as she has little money.

She applies for a vague position as the assistant and model to a cantankerous older famous artist, Hanson Radcliff. Although he is difficult and more than likely an alcoholic, he is known throughout the art community as a generous contributor. But Hazel soon learns Radcliff has many past secrets and regrets eating at him. As hard as she tries, she can’t seem to get him to open up. And the mystery deepens as she begins to learn more about Radcliff’s younger years.

Hazel on the other hand finds life in Laguna Beach wonderful! She begins her day with a swim in the ocean and through her association with Radcliff, becomes involved in the artist community which she loves. She and Jimmy bond as they share their dreams of what they would like their futures to become. Hazel, who dreams of working in the air industry, although clearly that would be frowned upon and Jimmy who someday want to own his own hotel as he has great ideas.

But when tragedy strikes and Hazel gives herself the choice to go back from where she came, the place she used to call home, or stay in Laguna Beach the place where she has found freedom and acceptance, she chooses home. But once there, she realizes home is sometimes not an actual place but it’s where your heart sings.

Hotel Laguna is a magnificent story with powerful messages such as forgiving yourself, letting go of regrets, living the life you choose to live and of course, love.

Hotel Laguna was an amazing book. I really enjoyed Hazel’s WW2 era story that takes place in Southern California. She was a driven character that faced some difficult choices, but followed her heart. Having been to Laguna Beach, made this even more interesting. If you’re a historical fiction fan, you will definitely enjoy this one.

3.5⭐. I really loved Montauk by this author so I knew I had to read this one. Overall, this was an enjoyable read. On the lighter side for a WW2 historical fiction book.

Hazel Francis is from Wichita Kansas and decides to head off to California during WW2 to join other women in the workforce while the men are away at war. When the men return, she must find work, and decides to stay in Laguna Beach,California. I enjoyed following Hazel as she navigated her life. I really thought the author did a fantastic job describing the setting of Laguna Beach and I truly felt transported. The plot was interesting and I enjoyed the characters as well. A nice story. This would make a great beach read.

Out June 20.

I devoured this tale of a young woman who finds herself in gorgeous Laguna Beach after the war and gets caught up in a community of bohemians. These painters and free thinkers force Hazel to rethink her conventional ideas about love, art, and her own self worth. Nicola Harrison has once again captured what it feels like to come of age in a magical place during a pivotal historical moment. I couldn't put it down.

Hotel Laguna is the second book I've read by Nicola Harrison and it won't be the last! Her writing is engaging and the use of detail made me feel like I was in Laguna Beach with Hazel the entire time. Nicola also emphasizes the sexism in the 1940s and I felt so frustrated on Hazel's behalf every time someone told her to get married and have babies instead of offering her a job. Also when she was working on the pageant and they made her do costumes because that was "women's work." I liked the working relationship Hazel built with Hanson, even though it was definitely fragile at times and he could be a handful to deal with.

I sometimes got annoyed with Hazel when she jumped to conclusions so quickly and when she was rude to someone who was competition for her in the love department. Otherwise, she was a sympathetic character I enjoyed getting to know throughout the novel.

Overall, it's a charming story and a great summertime (or anytime) read! I even got teary-eyed at one part. Perfect for fans of Fiona Davis and Hazel Gaynor.

It’s 1942 and Hazel Francis is one of the American women ready and willing to pitch in while the men are away fighting World War II. When she gets to California, she is hired by Douglas Aircraft, praised early on for her attention to detail and quick speed. Then the war ends and the men return, a bittersweet time for women like Hazel who have to provide for themselves with little to no opportunities to do so.

But after getting a taste of financial independence, Hazel is now certain of what she always suspected, a traditional woman she is not. Rooted in this knowledge, Hazel decides to stay in California, settling in the town of Laguna Beach. There she stumbles upon an opportunity to work with the controversial, yet famous artist, Hanson Radcliff. Pleasing the difficult Radcliff is easier said than done, but in time, the two develop a rhythm, and even a mutual respect. So when Hanson needs Hazel’s help, she has a decision to make. Should she choose to believe the rumors or choose to believe in new beginnings?

This is the second book I’ve read by author @nicolaharrisonauthor, both stories strong, female driven accounts of historical fiction. It’s clear Harrison has a penchant for writing strong females that are ahead of their time. While romanticizing this time period is nothing new, it’s also a part of history that proved to be crucial to the woman’s movement, thus making it the perfect backdrop to depict such progression. Interwoven in Hotel Laguna was also a touch of mystery along with a dash of love. A well rounded blend, Hotel Laguna is one hotel worth checking into this summer.

I'm a sucker for historical fiction but hadn't ever read a piece taking place in the late 1940s.

Synopsis: WWII breaks out and Hazel Francis, who wants to get involved in the war effort, moves to California to build airplanes. But when the war (and by extension, her employment) ends, she finds herself on the train and taking a random stop at the small bohemian town of Laguna Beach. But a lucky overhearing of a conversation sets her up with a job with local artist Hanson, a depressed man who is so weighed down by guilt over a scandal 30 years earlier. We see strong, independent Hazel find her way as a newbie in this small town, doing whatever it takes to make her own money, meet friends in the community, give back to struggling artists, help Hanson close a painful chapter, and maybe even find a romantic connection along the way.

Hazel Francis was such a joy - you could feel her compassion and genuine nature through the pages, and all I kept thinking was that this woman was such a good friend and addition to the Laguna Beach community. Her relationship with Hanson was adorable and felt so fully evolved from the rocky beginning of their employment together to the deep care they held for each other. Hanson really grew on me - I started the book thinking he'd be a crabby creep, but he also evolved, let down his walls, and opened up his heart, and Hazel was the perfect person to bring that out of him.

There are so many layers to this story, different characters and stories that all come together seamlessly. "Hotel Laguna" is a well-written page-turner with a bit of everything that all readers will love: history, romance, friendship, mystery, and kindness.

Big thank you to NetGalley and St, Martins Press for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend this book, which will be published in June 2023.

I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of historical fiction. I had not yet read a historical piece based on the end of the 1940s that really touched where ’Hotel Laguna’ had. It gave me the romance, the excitement, and the strong feminine characteristics that I look for. This is a book I would recommend to anyone who wants something new and fun in historical fiction.

A Miniature Poodle is lying on a bed with a hardcover book to her left and a pair of sunglasses on the left of the book. The book is Hotel Laguna by Nicola Harrison.

HOTEL LAGUNA by Nicola Harrison is a superb historical fiction novel that transports readers to the captivating world of post-World War II Laguna Beach. Set against the backdrop of 1940s California, the story follows Hazel Francis, a spirited former "Rosie the Riveter," as she defies societal norms and immerses herself in the vibrant art scene of Laguna Beach. Harrison skillfully weaves together multiple storylines, including a tantalizing scandal from the past of the enigmatic artist Hanson Radcliff. The author's deep appreciation for art shines through as she integrates the history of art and the Festival of the Arts seamlessly. The book beautifully explores the challenges faced by women during this transformative era, while Hazel emerges as a strong and relatable protagonist. The chemistry between Hazel and Jimmy, the hotel bartender, adds a delightful touch of romance. This book is a must-read for those seeking a summer escape that combines historical richness, art appreciation, and a touch of mystery.

1942: Hazel Francis is wanting to make an impact with the war effort. Things don’t seem to be going her way until she leaves Kansas and ends up in Laguna Beach, California. The job entails 7 days a weekend is labor intensive, but Hazel is determined.

I love a book about a heroine and she moves forward after she is fired from her airplane factory work, when the men come home. She now must find a new direction. She ends up working as a model and assistant to a powerful man.

A wonderful story with a little bit of mystery, romance and Hazel finding herself. Its amazing how one can reinvent themselves in a world that they never dreamed of.

This was a fun novel with rich details. I have enjoyed all of Harrision’s books. I highly recommend this one as well as Montauk and The Show Girl.

This novel is due out June 20, 2023

Interesting story about Laguna Beach shortly after WWII. The story follows Hazel as she tries to find her place after losing work in the factories. The work Hazel finds has her exploring the artist community and while the characters were intriguing, the story was very slow and was difficult to get through. I was fascinated by the Pageant of the Masters but there wasn’t as much on this subject as there could have been. Hazel was a strong and resilient character but the book dragged on and could have been shorter.

I received a copy from #NetGalley and @Macmillan.audio for an honest review.

Interesting plot with the main character Hazel helping out in wartime, but, finding herself without a job once the men return home. I was curious about this period and the work of women, like Rosie the Riveter. I have read the previous 2 books by this author and felt this would be a solid good read.

While I did enjoy the read it is my least favorite of the 3 the author has published. It was a bit of a slow burn. I did like the character of Hazel a lot. I was not expecting romance but it worked.

Hazel makes her way to Laguna after losing her job working on planes. I love artist's communities and live fairly close to one. This was very interesting with the back story of the artist Hazel begins to work for. She first signs on as a model and he paints her daily. But, she also becomes an assistant and begins to care for him deeply. There is a mystery that needs to be solved before the book ends...about a famous painting, Radcliff (the artist) did when he was having an affair years ago. So there is scandal and intrigue surrounding that.

All in all this was an enjoyable read and I offer many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and author for a digital copy to read for review. I look forward to more books written by Ms. Harrison.

Hotel Laguna by Nicola Harrison is an easy going, historical fiction novel with some romance, secrets and mystery too!

Hazel Francis leaves all she knows in Kansas for California to work at Douglas Aircraft after her fiancée heads off to War. After the War, she finds herself in Laguna Beach and begins working for a local artist, Hanson Radcliff. She finds herself enjoying the community, making friends and doing volunteer work in addition to working for Hanson. Hanson is a drinker with a secret in his past and she becomes determined to be a good assistant all while trying to dig into his past and uncover his secrets. However, Hazel has some secrets too!

I really enjoyed reading about the history of the women in the factories, Laguna Beach, Hotel Laguna, the artists communities and so much more. Although this book is a fictional novel, I love when I can read a book and take something away from it too!

I do not like reading or posting spoilers so I usually leave minimal, but summarized reviews. :)

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reading copy (ARC).

This book turned out to be something I had not expected. According to the cover, I was expecting a beachy, fluffy story. Wrong! You cannot judge a book by its cover. (though it's something I often do!) It is a truly interesting historical novel.

Hazel Francis is a young woman who works at the Douglas Aircraft plant during the war. When the war ends, she is jobless and goes to California, hoping to find a life and a purpose for herself. She ends up in an artist community, working for a crusty old artist as an assistant/model.

I love the setting, it actually exists. The town is full of quirky characters. Hazel soon finds her place in the town. The artist she works with, Hanson, comes complete with an interesting backstory. I learned about The Pageant of Masters. It is an “art festival” where the townspeople recreate famous paintings with real people. It still happens to this day, going on for 90 years!

The plot is a bit of a slow burner but it is interesting. I like watching the relationship between Hazel and Hanson evolve. There is a bit of a mystery, which unravels throughout. There is a small Hollywood element. It all comes together nicely. It's an even balance between a character-driven and plot-driven tale.

I have mentioned many times, I love historical novels for the fact that I always learn something. Rather than learning by reading historical facts, it's learning by storyline. This book does not disappoint.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.

Hotel Laguna by Nicola Harrison is a great historical fiction that takes us to post-WWII in California.

I really enjoyed being transported to another place and time within history. Visiting California (Laguna) in the immediate post-war years was a treat. This is a locale and a time period that really could be explored more.

The author did a great job immersing the reader into the environment, the social attitudes, and the surroundings.

Hazel Francis was a joy to follow. Being a midwest transport to the west coast, and seeing her navigate society, the times, and trying to find and balance her hopes, dreams, and her heart amongst the obstacles was the best part of the book.

It was well done.

5/5 stars

Thank you NG and St Martins Press for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.

I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 6/20/23.

This is a historical fiction book set at the tail-end of WWII and follows Hazel Francis as she dreams of bigger things than marriage and motherhood. She moves to California to aid in the war effort and ends up in Laguna Beach. The story follows her as she attempts to start a life in this small, artist rich community.

This story, while heartwarming at times, fell flat for me. The characters were not well flushed out and the storyline itself felt very choppy and predictable. I had a hard time believing the relationships between several of the characters. Also, the sexism that was portrayed in this book grated on my nerves. While I realize that it was a reflection of the times, the MC’s inner dialogue had me rolling my eyes often. In the end, I was just ready for the book to be over and I was not invested in the characters or the story.

I was given an ARC copy of this novel by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review of the book. This book is set to be released June 20, 2023.
