From the author of Epic Adventures and the award-winning Adventures on Trains series, Epic Cities takes readers on sight-seeing adventures all around the world.
Unique and enthralling aspects of each city will invite readers to consider the hidden systems that support their own ways of life, noticing details about the world, and discovering amazing similarities and differences with people across the planet. Go cycling in Copenhagen; catch the metro in Seoul; punt the canals in Venice – each destination has something to tell us about the clever, hidden ways our world works.
A celebration of human ingenuity, the marvellous structures of beautiful cities, and a sweeping tour of the world’s most fascinating cultures, this book would be perfect for readers who enjoy travel, learning secret and surprising facts about the world, and how everything fits together.
EPIC CITIES is the second non-fiction picture book from Sam Sedgman, a global tour of the world's urban environments.
Each double page spread features a different city, looking at how they tackle a facet of modern living. From transport to post to handling wildlife, there was a nice range of challenges (with a few spreads on topics rather than cities themselves). This focus on issues was also an effective way of making each city feel different because it analysed something it does especially well or needs to contend with that other cities might not need to. There were some non-related facts on each page (mostly around food) but these were small features.
The art work for this book was done by Daniel Long. I like that, though the artist was different, it felt similar to EPIC ADVENTURES, unifying the two books. It's full colour with text in bubbles but also hidden among the illustrations if you look closely.
Aanrader!
