In today’s business landscape of mega threats coming from AI, an aging workforce, intense competition, and rapid digital transformations, leaders need a new playbook, one that gives a structured collection of guidelines, strategies, and tactics to assist organizations and executives in achieving goals and solving “wicked” problems.
Big Bet Leadership ’s mission is to help business executives and leaders mitigate the risks of engaging in high-stakes gambles while maintaining the ambitious goals which motivate all of us to grow.
What is Big Bet Leadership? It is an assertive approach to digital transformations, innovation programs, investments in technology platforms, model transitions, and mergers and acquisitions.
To be a Big Bet Leader you need to be a shark. Being successful in today’s hyper-digital landscape requires bold moves that avoid “analysis paralysis,” which strikes when everything becomes a priority, resulting in ambiguity and ultimately failure.
And most Big Bets do fail. The stakeholders disagree on the nature of the problem in the first place, with fuzzy perspectives of where the company is heading. Big Bet Leadership puts in place the sharp thinking, the nurturing environment, and the low-friction management techniques to clearly define, value, and validate the real problem or customer pain; a precise, smart, and shared definition of the hypotheses for the critical components of the future state; and a set of leadership techniques forcing speed, focus, and alignment throughout.
Drawing from first-hand executive experience at Amazon, Google, The Gates Foundation, and T-Mobile, and having advised hundreds of companies, John Rossman and Kevin McCaffrey present us with a compelling framework with concepts, rules, techniques, and resources, equipping business executives to become Big Bet Legends.
John Rossman is a former Amazon executive, author of several books and a leading business and leadership advisor. His just released third edition of the business classic The Amazon Way which is his story opening up the Amazon Leadership Principles as only an insider could do. Mr. Rossman is an expert at crafting and implementing innovative and digital business models and capabilities, including the internet of things. He is a sought-after speaker on creating a culture of operational excellence and innovation. Prior to Rossman Partners, John was an executive at Amazon.com where he launched the marketplace business, and ran the enterprise services business. He can be reached at info@rossmanpartners.com
I worked with John at Amazon and seeing what he is capable of has always been impressive. I know that I learned a lot from Amazon. But clearly, John learned more.
I've consulted with many companies in areas of strategy and operations, and most are interested in taking advantage of new technologies, business processes, business models and overall (what is broadly known as) digital transformation.
But they have not had a clear enough path to effectively achieve those goals and often tend towards "business as usual" approaches with hope as a strategy. (The classic definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results - fits here.)
"Big Bet Leadership" lights up that path by providing guidance on most of the key processes required for success in our fast-changing business landscape.
John and Kevin have provided a key missing piece: a comprehensive guide on how to make the big bets - reducing the risk, operational processes, avoiding potential pitfalls, and how to track progress. And just as importantly, how to gain and maintain support for the new initiatives.
And there’s a lot of fun here as it's well-written with real-life examples of both successes and failures.
Whether you're in a position to lead new initiatives, participate in them or are looking for insights into the world of fast-changing business environments, I advise anyone to read this book.
And this is especially important as the business world embraces the incredibly disruptive benefits of AI.
I currently work in a company with innovation objectives that are above the regular standards, which is why my bosses demand proposals and proactivity regarding technological tools for our work. This book by this co-team of stars cannot only help the leaders in the teams and in the companies to direct the decisions in the best way, but the members of these teams will understand their leaders much better if they are clear about the premises from which this book starts. The book brings with 6 general tips to learn how to manage the advances that we are having at a business level in this digital era. Among the actionable perspectives that stood out the most for me are: Mastering Strategic Communication, because without it, teams cannot move forward together, and Prioritization through High Impact Experimentation, because it allows team members to work in a more strategic way in the face of their responsibilities. This book is definitely a high level of corporately relevant knowledge. Recommended.
Rossman added to his collection of strong books to with Big Bet Leadership. This book is described as a playbook, and that is precisely what it is. This short read is void of fluff, and gets right to the heart of critical steps to lead transformation at your organization.
Based on his experience at Amazon, the coauthor’s experience at TMobile and other experiences derived from former roles and consulting relationships, Rossman shares specific examples to drive home the essential lessons to identify Big Bets, and how to build the right teams, give appropriate vision, direction and authority to drive the effort forward while identifying and mitigating risks, addressing the factors that slow and derail so many transformation efforts.
It is a read worth considering for all leaders. It is the first book I completed in 2024, and I find it hard to believe that another could come along this year and knock it off of being my top read of the year.
From my perspective and business experience, this book is accurate and simply spectacular. When you read the first chapter, you are immersed in the art and science of making bold decisions that propel you to organizational success. It is like taking a professional diploma course in which you are given all the basics and useful knowledge with the best professors at the university; only that in this case, it is this book with secrets of effective leadership. The author uses his extensive experience on Amazon to offer ideas, practical strategies and day-to-day examples to take calculated risks and deal with uncertainty. In my specific case as a director in a fairly large company, these tools have given me everything I need to continue to lead with confidence. I recommend this book for anyone looking to master the art of strategic leadership and drive transformational change within their organization.
One commonality between any organization is the focus on establishing and delivering Big Bets. John Rossman shares in this book nuggets of wisdom in the form of a playbook that helps you define, manage, and lead to desired outcomes in whatever bets your organization are making. I enjoyed the structure of the book which is pretty straightforward filled with examples real and fictional to make points in the book. As a lifelong leader learner my favorite section was part III Big Bet Management with Chapter 6 Continue, Kill, Pivot, or Confusion being the best chapter. The lessons in this chapter is rich in tactics to keep one flexible in their vision, but yet tangible enough to adjust. I knew several of these tactics, but picked up some new lessons in this book.
In summary, if you are a leader no matter the level striving to define or executive a big bet for your organization this quick read book definitely has some lessons to share with you.
Big bet leadership your transformation playbook for winning in the hyperdigital era is a book for leaders and managers of companies who are looking to succeed in this age that we are in where Ai and Technology become ever more important in the way we do our business in day to day transactions. What this means is the author gives us his expertise and his guidance on how we can redefine our cost models how we can overcome inertia and how we can adapt our businesses as well as our leadership practices in order to succeed. I found this book to be very helpful and informative, it was interesting in how he approached some of the problems that were given in this book, because they were new solutions that I have not previously thought about as such I think that this would be a great book for any manager and leader today.
This is a book that any entrepreneur should read. It takes the reader into the future and provides knowledge and information that will lead the reader to success. “Big Bets” is somewhat like a masterclass if you will, to translating strategic thought into action. It urges leaders to embrace clarity, velocity, and risk management. This manual for the modern executive, packed with wisdom and practical advice, is a must read. The writing style of the authors is clear, concise and actionable. It eases the complexity of the central topic of this book. I recommend this book to all those looking to expand their knowledge in this field and educate themselves with two great authors, sharing experiences and pouring that knowledge to those willing to learn.
A handy guide Digital era is already among us, so what we must do is make friends with it and embrace the potentiality of digitalization, especially when it comes to AI. John Rossman and Kevin Mcaffrey have written “Big bet leadership” to explain the wonders and importance of AI in human-beings’ lives. Every chapter delves into the strategies and tools that people can encounter when using AI. It’s a guide that talks about communication, business, strategies, and growth opportunities that might help mould any leader. After reading it, I realised how important it is to know about digital help in life. I found it very handy and clear with real-stories and examples that help understand the nitty-gritty of the book. In fact, some ideas can be used into other areas of study or life. All in all, I believe that it’s a must read.
Great book for executives and business leaders about the subject of "big bet leadership," or driving your business forward and keeping it relevant in the ever-changing business and technology climate with bold moves. This book definitely isn't for the lower-level employees or laymen, unless the reader aspires to promote into a leadership role or run their own business. It's a big idea, grand action type of book. It's a well written book and I think its audience will relate and resonate with the message contained here. AI, the Internet of Things, and all the various technology changes that are happening in the business world make it a must to keep up and to keep your business thriving.
Author John Rosssman has been generous enough with advice and observations we should all read at some point in our lives. In this legendary business book, the author helps us develop the essential skills to create or maintain a business, to learn how to prioritize, and to learn how to master strategic communication. The book is written in the form of a practical handbook for navigating real-life business scenarios and a powerful management manifesto that has the ability to revolutionize the way we work or have been conceiving work so far. It is well-structured and reads in a way that educates. In my view, after reading this book, the art of the entrepreneur can be summed up in a single word: managing.
Big Bet Leadership is a book that redefines the leadership role inside a company. Both authors are extremely qualified and have worked for some of the biggest corporations out there, making this reading both technical and meaningful.
I have to admit it was a challenging read, the book explains several concepts that are not world wide known, so I recommend it for people on an intermediate to advanced level, definitely not the beginner type of read. I did learn a lot, especially about analysis and business models, but it took me a while to fully grasp some concepts.
Overall, an informative and practical book, written by experienced authors and destined for businessmen who want to make the best of their careers.
Nowadays, the topic of artificial intelligence is something that is present in every aspect of our lives, but it is not so common to find readings that help us to understand and integrate these new technologies in our daily lives, and especially in our work which is one of the most important aspects of life. The book focuses on leadership with AI, seeking to train bold and innovative leaders who are not afraid of the future and are ready to take risks and grow their businesses, improving their way of communicating, reducing costs and understanding how to overcome those difficult moments where making decisions becomes more difficult. I highly recommend it; it is a complete read with a lot of useful tools.
This book is 110% ingenious, proposing what many of us think but no one has been able to develop into ideas. You and I know very well that artificial intelligence is much more present than we imagine and instead of seeing it as a threat, the best we can do is to see it as an ally. In addition to being a book about leadership, it also explores the idea of growing your business sustainably by using artificial intelligence to reduce risk and create better, smarter solutions for your customers. It is a very well thought out text, very well written and above all very good to implement. I think it is a book that everyone should read at some point in life. I highly recommend it.
Big Bet Leadership by John Rossman and Kevin McCaffrey is a leadership book for the new age of AI-dominated technologies. While the book contains all the typical aspects you would expect from a leadership guide book, including driving growth by identifying customer’s pain points, developing effective communication, reducing risk and more, it does so with the new framework of emerging AI technologies in mind. In addition to traditional advice, the book also guides readers on how to integrate and maximize the effectiveness of AI in your business model while remaining aware of the risks and potential pitfalls that come with it. I am giving this book five out of five stars.
Artificial Intelligence is a new reality and it is time to incorporate it into our lives and why not in our business. ''Big Bet Leadership'' is a guide that will show you how to become a leader in this new era of AI. This book will help you to lead the transformation that your business needs without fail. Right now, there are so many new technologies and other challenges that sometimes overcome the efforts that a leader makes, so this book offers a new way to see these challenges and show you how this transformation can become your ally. This book will change the perspective that you have about AI. I recommend it.
I have read many books on leadership in the digital environment, but none have convinced me as much as this one. The clarity and depth with which the topics are addressed make it an outstanding work in its field. This reading has provided me with valuable tools and knowledge that have been of great help in significantly improving my ability to communicate more effectively.
This book is amazing. It was full of excellent and applicable information. Big Bet Leadership not only teaches but also inspires and empowers readers to reach their full potential in an increasingly digital world. The writing style of the authors was also engaging and easy to read. It's a must-read!
This book provides examples on how you can transform your company in a hyper-digital era and in a very changing environment, therefore I believe this is a contemporary read that can help many people to understand these concepts nowadays. The book was written very clearly and is quite easy to follow.
One of the things that stood out for me is the fact that the authors are clear witht the risks and changes this process might have, but they also explain why they are worth it, and to be honest, it is refreshing to see an open book about this topic for a change! This is a very good book to start getting things together! Very motivating!
Be flexible in your vision but firm in your tactics.
This book is a step-by-step guide to becoming a great leader in this saturated digital industry. Leadership and management are significant and highly coveted role in a company. Being able to be that leader that everyone turns to and respects is the dream of every management department member. Chapter 6 gives you that almost perfect vision for management; working on the "CONTINUE, KILL, PIVOT, OR CONFUSION" outcome state of mind was helpful. It was catchy and easy to implement. This applies to projects and managing people, too. Try to give people 2 or 3 chances to improve, and then either find a different department or let them go.
Being an executive leader in the era of the artificial world is no easy task, which is why author Rossman shares with readers his direct leadership experiences with exhaustive research and authentic stories. Furthermore, in this era, it is proposed that communication must be mastered, in order to develop skills to guarantee alignment and participation. Personally, I think that the balance between graphics and explanation is very successful, since although some graphics appear when reading, they are not invasive. Another point to consider is that it is a dynamic book with a lot of information. I certainly recommend it to those interested in the world of leadership.
I think this book can be summarized in three words, making complex ideas accessible and easy to take action. Navigating the modern business word is no joke, so having a book to help with that is really helpful. It was really interesting and also very happy to see that the book emphasizes a lot on embracing risk and uncertainty as a strategy to fight the obstacles that may come. I think that it is a great and valuable lesson for business but also for life. That mindset of flexibility is key to success nowadays. The writing style is very clear and it helps gather all the information really well. Each chapter offers case studies and key concepts to learn.
"Big Bet Leadership" is a powerful guide and the right one for modern business leaders. The book's advice on handling AI strategies, growth, and innovation is spot-on and practical. I appreciate the clear steps and real-world examples that the authors provide. The focus on leadership qualities like clear communication and decisive action is inspiring. The authors' backgrounds at Amazon, Google, and T-Mobile add credibility to their insights. I found this read to be motivating. Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone looking to drive significant change and achieve high-stakes success in the digital age.
I liked the quality of its content of this book, and for its focus on action and practical implementation. I think this playbook provides the tools needed to lead with confidence and effectiveness. The collaboration of two authors with such diverse and valuable experiences at leading companies adds credibility and depth to the advice conveyed. What I liked most is that the structure of the book combines theory with practical examples and additional resources. This makes this read a comprehensive guide for any executive who wants to transform their business and their career. I recommend it.
Big Bet Leadership is the rare transformation book that’s actually usable. It’s fast, clear, and packed with practical frameworks (like the Big Bet Vector and Three Futures Memo) that help you move from “big idea” to execution—especially for AI, digital transformation, and innovation work. The mix of real operator experience (from launching Amazon Marketplace through Amazon to leadership lessons drawn from Satya Nadella and John Legere) makes it feel grounded, not theoretical. Highly recommend if you’re leading high-stakes change.
I'm a big fan of the author and his work in Amazon Way. That book was transformational for our team culture and values. Big Bet was targeted at leaders to help layout a playback for increasing the chance of success for bug, transformational projects. There were a lot of good nuggets and, in particular, I liked the portion where it broke out the 3 responsibilities for executives and common pitfalls to watch out for.
Another excellent playbook that every technology leader should have in their back pocket. John’s ability to synthesize his experiences at Amazon has been a key influence for me over the years and this book brings it all together. Practicing many of these learnings led to the successful launch of ‘Buy Online, Pickup In-Store’ at Amazon, and ultimately the eventual decision to kill it. Going forward, this playbook will always be nearby.
This was a good read. I did like the examples provided to showcase how you can transform your company in a hyper-digital era. The book was written very clearly and seems to showcase how you can apply the methods in an ongoing changing economy. They understand that there's risks and changes, but that's what makes it worth it. It's a great guide for folks who want to start their own company and transform it for the future!
Good read and very much the positive reinforcement of the Big Bet. The Starting with “WHY” the end game portion, what are we trying to accomplish and outlining the steps is all positive. The number of Memos is hard to follow but make a few notes and things all fall into place.
The conclusion also reinforces the details the “backwards process” is the WHY and what is the end game to get us to WIN the BIG BET.
In this current time digital era has been changed the ways organization are being managed. The leaders need to embrace technology to run the organization well.
This is a book about leadership in the age of AI and rapidly advancing technology. If you are a business owner or CEO, you can’t afford not to know the tips and tricks you will find in these pages. The authors have succeeded in the business world, and they have much to teach to enterprising individuals who want their companies to get ahead.
They talk in great detail about identifying and taking advantage of growth opportunities, communicating better with clients and employees alike, and using experimentation to further develop winning business models. There are many books that tell you how to succeed in business, but you’re not likely to find one that is more comprehensive and tailored toward modern solutions in this ever-changing world.
