The Highway—a single road spanning deadly deserts, gleaming kingdoms and forest cities. Many have tried to travel its length. Few have succeeded.
When a young, self-taught engineer embarks on a thousand-mile journey to find a cure for his ailing brother, he faces every obstacle and foe The Highway has to offer. Criminals and mages. Assassins and pirates. All the while, a violent coup threatens to plunge the entire realm into war.
This thrilling tale of friendship and ambition is a must-read for fans of epic adventure, high fantasy and political intrigue.
George Ellis lives in Austin, where he writes fantasy and science fiction books at night and runs an advertising agency by day. In addition to novels, he writes screenplays, viral videos and Internet memes.
Highway is a thrilling fantasy adventure that kept me hooked from start to finish. The journey of the young engineer searching for a cure for his brother is packed with danger, intrigue, and some great moments of humor that lighten the intense plot. George Ellis does a great job blending political drama with action-packed sequences and well-drawn characters.
I especially appreciated the way levity is woven into the story, it made the darker themes feel more accessible and the characters more relatable. That said, a few parts felt a bit rushed, and I would have loved a bit more detail in some of the world-building.
Overall, a solid read for fans of epic fantasy who enjoy a mix of adventure, magic, and witty storytelling. Definitely looking forward to what Ellis writes next!
I would've given this book five stars and a awesome review if it was a complete novel. The writing was imaginative and exciting. The characters were lively and wrecklessly unrelenting in their pursuits. But the fact the book had so many unanswered questions and a epilogue left me bereft of my time and angry I bothered. I don't even entertain books that might prelude to being a series or having a sequel when I look up the reviews or comments on it. But for some reason I was fooled thinking I was getting a complete novel THE END. So yeah three stars because this novel could've been completed and thorough in detail with a few more chapters written. Yeah I'm pissed..
