Ancient The Dawn of the Western World sets out to relate the story of ancient Greece, its civilization, culture, and art, in a way no publication has ever done before. The book takes readers on a journey of discovery, using more than 1000 photographs of outstanding quality, many of them never before published. The book opens with a brief but complete history of Hellas, from its origins through the Roman conquest, and then moves on to an exploration of how the ancient Greeks lived - the homes they dwelled in, the jewelry they wore, the religions they practiced, the dramas they performed, the wars they fought, the games they played.

Great illustrations, in large format, but the text is very shallow and won't teach you much. It deals with important topics in two pages, for instance. The chapter presenting Itineraries in Greece is an interesting approach, and even though this book was published in 1997, you can still get a good idea of what you can visit.

Las fotografías reproducidas en el libro son espectaculares; la diagramación gráfica y las (pocas) ilustraciones muy atractivas. Las fotografías de la orfebrería griega son realmente extraordinarias, por su variedad, su calidad y por su acertadísima inclusión de detalles. No menos extraordinarias son las calidad de la fotografía de las esculturas con un esmerado e imaginativo trabajo de iluminación que merece destacarse.

Lamentablemente el texto principal no está ni remotamente a la altura de la parte gráfica del libro (no así las pertinentes e interesantes explicaciones de las ilustraciones). En general, el texto luce confuso, rebuscado, repetitivo, pomposo y mal-estructurado, sobre todo para una obra de obvia divulgación popular. A título de ejemplo del lenguaje poco idóneo usado por el autor, incluyo una porción tristemente bastante representativa del texto (páginas 102-103):

El arte "geométrico" nace como reflejo de una nueva mentalidad y de una nueva actitud del hombre frente a la naturaleza, ya no vista como un universo que representar, sino como una realidad infinita y compleja a partir de la cual reconocer la esencia y las leyes ordenadoras internas, sin dejarse atraer por la variedad de sus formas aparentes circunstanciales y constantemente variables

y continúa, a lo largo de un sólo párrafo, con una verdadera avalancha cacofónica de términos intimidantes e innecesarios: "posición topográfica", "sinecismo", "póleis", "pluriestratificación", "tipología tardomicénica", "mégaron", "exploraciones planimétricas", "espacios metópalos", "zoomórficos", "rotura de organicidad"....

Se incluye un glosario absolutamente insuficiente de unos sesenta términos, que van desde terminos de razonable inclusión como "acrópolis", "ágora" y "gimnasio" hasta gongorismos como "crepidomo", "crisoelefantino" y "talasocracia".

Recomiendo ojear con fruición y detenimiento las imágenes, leer sus descripciones, saltar el grueso del texto y no dejarse intimidar por la pedantería de sus pasajes menos afortunados.

I just love the pictures! They are extraordinary and really make you return to them. The text was OK, lots of basic info but that is totally fine considering the fact that pictures are the focus of this book. :D

Εκπληκτικό φωτογραφικό υλικό, μέτριο κείμενο (συχνά αδιάφορο), μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί και σαν τραπέζι (μέχρι δύο ατόμων) αν σας κουράσει ως ανάγνωσμα.
