Although you will find that the Born at Midnight series by C.C. Hunter has quite good ratings, I found that by the fifth book I was internally dying. I don’t think many people concurred with me because everyone in the ratings found all of the novels to be so creative. I, however, found her writing to be so monotonous that it made me want to fall asleep. It is preposterous that by the fifth book there was still means for the main character to be complaining about her life non-stop. I thought she had had enough time to figure out the problems that included such insignificant things as her enemy's deportment. It was a bizarre idea to include werewolves and vampires in the story, and that definitely helped me to like the books better, just not enough to put aside everything else. The main character had a replete amount of food on her table, two close friends who had her back, and two guys fighting over her. Maybe I shouldn’t judge because we all complain about things that we should be grateful for, and she did have people that felt malevolence for her. She was also stuck in the same love triangle for all five of the books and by then I think both guys should have left. Even if it was an impromptu decision, it would have been better for them. Her attempts to unobtrusively find out information wasn’t very helpful to her; I think she would have been better if she hadn’t gotten involved with any of it. After the epilogue, there might have been a moment where I smiled, but probably just because I was finally done with the series.
I read each book individually and not as part of the Complete Series Collection
Turned at Dark (Shadow Falls Book #0.5) This book does a good job of introducing Della Tsang, I have read the Shadow Falls Series before but this book is a nice introduction to the world and I am glad I read it.
This is Shadow Falls Book #0.5 Shadow Falls Book #01 is Born at Midnight
Della Tsang is also the main character in the spin-off series Shadow Falls: After Dark Shadow Falls: After Dark Book #01 is Reborn
Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls Book #1) This book was really fun to read with an interesting plot that keeps you wondering what will happen next. I really liked all the different characters and seeing how they developed throughout the book as well as seeing how the various relationships changed throughout the book. I am really looking forward to the next book!
I originally read this without having read the prequel book Turned at Dark and while it is easy enough to read book first the prequel does a really nice job of introducing the world and Della's character.
Awake at Dawn (Shadow Falls Book #2) This book was a great continuation from book 1 Born at Midnight and I really enjoyed seeing how all the characters and their relationships are growing. I can't wait to see what happens next in Taken at Dusk.
Taken at Dusk (Shadow Falls Book #3) I am really enjoying this series so far and all the characters as well as the twists the story takes. This series has a lot of great characters and I like that their backstories are slowing being revealed to fill out and explain who they are and why they do things. I look forward to learning more about all the characters' pasts as well as seeing how they continue to develop in the next book.
Whispers at Moonrise (Shadow Falls Book #4) This book was a great addition to the series and had some great plot twists as well as intriguing character development. I can not wait to read the next book in the series and find out what happens next!
Saved at Sunrise (Shadow Falls Book #4.5) This book focuses on Della Tsang and Steve (shapeshifter) and takes place between the end of Whispers at Moonrise (Book #04) and Chosen at Nightfall (Book #05). I enjoyed reading more about Della in this book and found it a quick and enjoyable book. I look forward to reading more books in the Shadow Falls world in the future.
Chosen at Nightfall (Shadow Falls Book #5) This was a great series that I have really enjoyed reading and I wish it wasn't over. I am looking forward to the next series Shadow Falls: After Dark & seeing were it picks up as well as learning more about Della and her adventures.
An interesting Supernatural Romance filled with humor angst and fun action.
The series is a whole is fairly good at keeping the reader hooked. While it does suffer a bit from a love triangle with a flat tire, meaning that it's clear who the main protagonist will end up with from the very start, the relationships ,friendships, and trials the characters experience feel real. The main target group of the book series is young adult female however the story should keep the interest of anyone who enjoys Supernatural romances filled with danger and mystery. These five books and two short stories are depicted as having taken place in about 4 months or less. With the amount that occurs in each book it does feel as if it should have taken place over a much longer time period, yet it was still rather enjoyable For the first time reader of the series it will feel fresh and how it treats the different supernatural creatures and their place in the world. It is a young adult series that will focus heavily on relationship issues of the characters as much as the overall threat to the main protagonist for each book. The language in the first books is a little rougher than the ladder books but overall it does not get to course and the humor while juvenile is something many people will find either relatable or funny at the very least. This is my third read-through and first after actually buying the books in this neat little package. I felt guilty about not being able to purchase the series after having read through twice. Problems that are easier to ignore when reading through the book series slower, and for the first time, crop up during binge reading. While the author is excellent in keeping with the readers attention she is rather heavy-handed with false Cliffhangers at the end of each chapter throughout the series. Meaning more often than not the chapter will end with something that is supposed to be surprising or a new character entering the scene without identifying themselves and saying something dramatic. The next chapter usually begins with revalation that it wasn't something dangerous or serious. As mentioned before the love triangle while not too distracting in the beginning books becomes more distracting in the latter books when you realize that there's really no chance the author will go for option b. And that option b should have been permanently friend-zoned in earlier books. My one wish for the series itself is that could have been depicted as having taken place over a longer period of time and that we got to experience more of a summer camp type feel. We do not see our main protagonist experiencing too much outside of her or someone else's cabin, in the Woods during meet your campmate hour, or the camp counselors office. Nonetheless for as much as it seem that I have complained about the series it does deserve a four-star rating because its strengths are really strong. Also the books and short stories surrounding the character of Della seem stronger in some ways and of course this series sets up that series and those stories very well. For $36 it is well worth the price.
As a fellow author, I love to read books outside of the genres that I write. Once I find a great author, I stick with them. From the very first novel about Shadow Falls, I have been hooked. Kylie, Miranda and Della are three of the most unusual girls with extraordinary powers that you will ever meet. Their everyday interactions with others at Shadow Falls will mesmerise you and pull you into a world of mystery, filled with supernatural intrigue - both good and bad. But no matter what happens, you always know that these girls will stick together through thick and thin. They are best friends forever, and I never thought that vampires, witches, shape-shifters, werewolves could interact so well until I entered the world of Shadow Falls. Definitely worth the purchase price and more! So far, I have re-read the series four times.
This was a wonderful series and kept me completely engrossed. Great writing, always on the edge of your seat. Laughed, cried.. Is a YA series but I truly enjoyed it. Wish she would write more...such a clever twist. All the paranormal wrapped into one.
This series made my middle schooler heart happy. I disagree on who Kylie ended up with *ahem* but I love the plot and the side characters! Della and Miranda are such good foils to each other and remain complex and well written even years after coming back to the series.
I love all the background couples too and will have to go back and finish Della’s trilogy! A supernatural camp is such a good idea as is Kylie’s secret.
Started reading this story and was expecting a very punster type of story line but the story was really unique. The characters weren't cliche and the language used was pretty current. Each character is very identifiable (magical traits aside) you could see yourself as one of these teens in high school. over all great fun to read. Plus who doesn't love being fought over by 2 hot guys? Or at least reading about it.
Loved this series truly and there is a spin off with the same character's from these books! A must read ...Fantastic!! I however, have not had the great pleasure to read the 2 short stories as of yet...truest me I can't wait!
I enjoyed every once of this series!!!! can't wait for the full series for della! everything about this series was great... infuriating at times but in a good way!
Enjoyed this set, read the whole set in under a week. I had a giggle over all the safe sex, and little educational tidbits. I guess it's perfect for the teenage reader.
