Witch Central #2

An Unlikely Witch

Rate this book
A toddler and a snowman.

Everyone in Witch Central knows about Jamie Sullivan's precog vision. The one he saw when he first laid eyes on the woman who would one day be his wife.

Now Nat and Jamie have it all. A fiery, adorable daughter, the kind of marriage that lasts to forever and beyond, and deep roots in the love, antics, and magic of Witch Central's leading family.

Those parts of the vision have all come true. All that is missing is one small boy with dancing eyes.

And all the magic in the universe can't seem to make him real.

An Unlikely Witch is book two of the Witch Central series, set in the bestselling, well-loved world of A Modern Witch.

There are times it seems that our world grows darker by the day. The media's constant barrage of greed, envy, loss, violence, and - yes - even some evil acts can beat down the spirit if watched too often. There are many who have become desensitized to it all; who are turning off their feelings.

Ms. Geary's novels fight against this deepening spiral into the dark. With a far-flung family of witches and their loved ones who help them, Ms. Geary's novels show that true magic lies in being human, in feeling all emotions, and in a deep-seated loyalty to family, friends, and humanity.

Thank you, Ms. Geary, for writing these novels. I have read through all of your novels in the past four months. I am an avid reader who has read, literally, thousands of works, and these books have risen to the top of my favorites list. The universe saw fit to bring me to your novels after I had suffered a loss. I was walking in darkness, stumbling since it was my first experience with the true dark. I grew up in a family that values its people and is very like Witch Central (without the glittery magic!) so was very lucky that the darkness did not truly touch me until I was an adult. Your novels helped me find my way back to the light. As I read and smiled, laughed out loud, fell in love with the characters, and cried, I was reminded that "the light always returns."

"An Unlikely Witch" touched a particular nerve as I identified strongly with Nat. I, too, just four short months ago had to give up a dream. One that I thought had been a miracle granted after eight years. It hurt. I cried with your characters throughout this particular novel. But...but...I also laughed. Thank you. I don't believe it's any coincidence that this book came at this time for me. I needed it to help me on my journey. I cannot thank you enough.

Keep spreading the light, Ms. Geary. I will, too.

I don't know of these books are getting more maudlin, or if I'm just noticing it more. Geary's writing has always seemed a bit too much like a collection of one trite aphorism after another, each line designed to be Wise and Important. It's never really bothered me before, and I got sucked into the characters and the world with the first book. But for some reason I noticed it much more with this book. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot more than usual. Also, I've never much cared for the way her adult characters go overboard with the bleeding for the little ones b/c they can't bear to let them grow up. Most of the situations they're bleeding over really don't seem like that big a deal to me. Despite all that, I'm unfortunately rather attached to the characters, and I'm sure will continue to read the books. This one, however, was by far my least favorite so far.

While this was not the best in the series, I enjoyed An Unlikely Witch very much. I've read all the books in this series and always look forward to the next book's release. It's nice to get a chance to visit again with the characters Debora Geary has created. I found myself laughing and crying at various parts of the book. It is always satisfying to get another glimpse into the daily lives of these interesting people. I only wish that I could meet people like these in the real world! I will say that Geary's books are heavy on character development and light on action. If you read this with the expectation of the traditional bad guy, life-threatening crisis, or a steamy love story between two people, you will not enjoy the book. The beauty of this book is that you are witness to a slice of life in the world of some very normal people- many of whom just happen to be witches. They have problems, sadness, happiness, love, romance, phobias, pasts, etc. All these factors weave a tapestry in which Geary's characters play a part. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends, but it is important with this series to read the books from the beginning or you'll be lost with all the characters and story lines.

Yay, more witch stories. I managed to realize that the crystal ball given to Lauren was the replacement for the witch tracker of the last series, and that ball (orb, to call it by its given name) would be the mover of the plot. Mostly, I just like the happiness, love, cookies and magic. Nothing complex, nothing dark and twisted, just people loving each other. I suspect I liked most that Nat wanted to punch something. Even the most serene can need to throw things sometimes.

This gets only 4+ stars, since it seemed that there was some unusual (for Ms Geary) filler in the middle, some bouncing back and forth among the healer characters Moira and Sophie in particular, that was redundant. Otherwise, though this was rather sad for much of the story, I very much enjoyed the book.

As with every book by Ms. Heady I laughed, I cried, and loved. The book delivered in so very many ways. Yet another great book in a wonderful series of books.

What happens when the glimpse of a future that made you fell in love with your husband and with a little boy who didn't yet exist falls to pieces, despite your firmest belief that it's meant to be? Natalia Sullivan, serene yogini and beloved non-witch member of the Sullivan clan, finds her calm and inner peace rapidly crumbling as the dream she's held onto for so long vanishes with each month of negative pregnancy tests. The universe - and her body - are conspiring against her and Jamie, denying them the fulfillment of the hope they've built their relationship on. Can the two - and the rest of Witch Central - survive the loss of a little boy they've loved for three years, even though they've never felt his kisses or wrapped him in hugs? When all of the magic in California and Nova Scotia combined is unable to waken Nat's womb, Nat and Jamie just might crumble along with their dream.

Tears and laughter mixed wonderfully as I read through this book. I've tried time and again to explain what exactly makes Debora Geary's books so enchanting - so absolutely heart breaking and heart healing in the same moment. This time, I'm going to borrow a few of her words from a recent interview with Herbiary.com's Meg Smith. (For the entire interview, go here: http://herbiary.com/blogs/herban-wisd...)

"There are few values I hold more dear than that we are each wonderful, unique, and worthy of love. And when we as a community can’t manage that, it weakens all of us. I grew up in a small town and felt very different. Other. And then I went to an international school in Italy for two years and found deep connection with people who shared nothing of my culture, language, or upbringing. It was transformative, and it shaped a very important part of who I am (including the deeply ingrained belief that a shared meal makes everything better ☺). I’ve spent much of my life since reaching across divides of one sort or another – to delinquent teens, senior executives, cancer patients. Learning how much of me lives in each of them. But nothing drove this message home more than the chance to be mother to my son. Griffin is severely autistic – he doesn’t speak, and he understands only a very little of what we say to him. And some days, being his mama is the most deeply frustrating experience of my life. But mostly, it has stripped my sense of what love is back to the very essentials. When he curls up against my chest, full of giggles or sleepy snuggles, it is so obvious that we are, in all the most important ways, so very much alike. Everything else is just trappings. My books are my plea to the world to see his heart. To see every heart."

Debora puts her heart - and ours - in her work and creates a community we'd all love to be a part of: one of acceptance, love, humor, compassion and understanding. I don't think I'll ever be able to read one of her books without longing to be a part of Witch Central and the crazy, amazing clan of Sullivans. Ten stars out of five!

The new "witch central" series remains true to the "modern witch" character and style that Debora Geary fans all love. It amazes me how she can bring this level of quality time and time again. "An Unlikely Witch" continutes the journey of Nat and Jamie, picks of threads of their relationship we first saw in book one of "A Modern Witch".

There is much that is familiar and comfortable here. We again get to visit the real, believable, genuine and beloved characters from the previous series. There is the same sense of humor and fun. There is happiness, romance and lightheartedness. Yet the adventure is still present. The tension of the story, the new underlying theme, the different life lesson in each book captures the imagination as strongly as ever.

Each book is complex, this one is true to form. On the surface is a lovely human story with all the building emotion, crisis and denument that a truely gifted writer brings. The story is decorated with glitter: The magic itself (spells, crystal balls, teleportation, weather, elements...all the good stuff). That in itself is enough to make the book worth while. Then, underneath it all we find pearl after pearl of wisdom. Her other books seem to have one thematic lesson or another. This one has a whole handful of pearls.

On the surface, there are the ups and downs of parenthood, and the decision to have more children - or not. But there is also a very real insight into the workings of intuition, precognition and "predictions" through Lauren and her crystal ball. We see how fixed expectations can be a stumbling block to moving forward into our future, and the joys an open mind and heart can bring. It is a bit of a stretch, but you could argue that it is a lesson in manefesting dreams through that open-ness, as Nat draws love of family, friends and more into what began as a lonely life. As an extra bonus, Moira reminds us all that the little magics are just as healing and important as the big ones, which speaks to the very best part of all of Debora Geary's books. With her "witch central" characters and adventures, she puts very real magic into our hands. She shows how little, tangible things that anyone can do are, well, magic. Even things as simple as a cup of tea, a batch of cookies, a pair of mittens are the vehicles for healing. Love, support, friendship, thoughtfulness, generosity, and humor are magics we all really do posses, and "An Unlikely Witch" reminds us of that once again.

This book has to be one of my top 3 favorites of Ms. Geary's books. The storyline is intense and I found myself hoping for different outcomes at different parts of the story. Technically An Unlikely Witch is well crafted. As you read the books in her series you can see her growth as a writer. Her first two series were fantastic reads. From her Facebook page and website www.amodernwitch.com it is obvious she has a string fan base.
"An Unlikely Witch" finally solves the riddle of Jamie's vision of a little boy making snowman that began in her first book,"A Modern Witch". Everyone at Witch Central, real and imagined have waited for Nat ands Jamie's little boy to come. It's been several years, one wonderful girl, Kenna, has already been born. What is the mystery behind Nat's inability to get pregnant and bing the much waited for, and loved, child in to their lives. The reason is unexcited and a great surprise.
The only drawback to "An Unlikely Witch" is that the end is pretty easy to guess. I've never had this happen, before. How the reader, as well as Nat and Jamie, get there is as riveting as all the other books written by Debora Geary. April, and her next Witch Central book isn't too far off. For Geary fans we're already re-reading early, favorite books. For anyone new to Witch Central Ms. Geary, herself, admits the reader will be lost unless a few other books are read first.
The books are available primarily as e-pub, with Kindle being then most read form. For other devices she publishes in e-pub form. Several of her books are available as Audio tapes and almost 1/2 the titles are published in traditional pen and ink form. Through Amazon the cost of the books is quite low, especially when compared to other powerhouse writers. Definitely a must-read.

Magical stories at their finest.

Having read all of the Witch Central books I knew before purchasing An Unlikely Witch that I was in for a magical night. I knew that I would rate it five stars before I even begun immersing myself in the magical world Deborah Geary has created. I knew this because with every story she creates I find a bit more "magic" in my life. Living in such a fast paced world, raising two children in said world..small moments..(Magical moments) don't seem be appreciated. It takes something huge to get one to stop and smile something "Xtreme". While those huge moments , the birth of a child,a graduation, Christmas morning with children are wonderful..it's the small moments in our life that are truly magic. Debora Geary understands these moments in life and has the magical talent of making me understand as well..and repeatedly bringing that understanding into my life anew with each book. After reading her work I notice the glint in my son's eyes as he does battle with his star wars toys, the wonderful smell of nutella cookies coming out of my oven and the sounds of my boys feet thundering down the stairs to grab one whilst still warm. These are the magical moments that build and shape our lives, shape who we are becoming. These are the moments that Debora Geary helps me stop and appreciate. Everyday magical moments..happening around us constantly..if we only take the time to slow down and look. Thank you Debora for helping me see the "magical threads" and for nutella cookies, which I never would have made had you not made them sound so delicious.

Wow - this book made me cry: tears of sadness followed by tears of joy. A wonderful book, as always, from Debora Geary. These books are wonderful joy-filled books about family, friends that turn into family, cookies, noodles, friends helping friends and all kinds of love & humor. The characters are complex & well developed, even the non-human ones (the orb and Fuzzball the cat in particular).

This is book 2 of the Witch Central series, and I received a copy of this book from the author as a thank you for my review of the first book in the series An Imperfect Witch and an honest review of this book. You really need to read these books in order and you really should read the "A Modern Witch" series first(https://www.goodreads.com/series/6461...) to get a feel for the characters and their witchy capabilities. For more of Lizard's story you should read the Witchlight trology (https://www.goodreads.com/series/7597...). All the books are amazing, G-rated, stories full of wonderful, fully developed characters that immediately pull you in. For Amazon Prime members, these books are a good choice your monthly free book. I started getting them that way, but I've found myself buying them because I love to go back and re-read them, they are that good.

5 STARS

This book had me spellbound. Look forward to reading it, hated to put it down to talk on phone, hated it when it was over. I wanted to keep reading about the characters. They are my friends.

The plot was full of emotions dealing with fertility problems, dreams having to let go and find new dreams, hidden dreams. The triplets had an idea to assign everybody a name and they need to make a special dream come true for that person. Which they did a great job with a lot of thought of what that person needed.

I wanted to go swimming in the ocean in Dec. with everybody and have so much fun as they were having. They truly are a big family inviting everyone one to be part of it. When one person has a problem they all want to help each other. The love and caring are wonderful between everyone.

The setting mostly is Berkley, California in Dec.

The pacing of the story was riveting. I did not want to put it down even when I had finished it. June will be along time for the next book in the series. Debora has spoiled us with books sooner than six months.

This is a wonderful series of books. Clean reads with lots of interesting characters and talents. Some even magical. A community that makes you want to be a part of. Lots of drama, love and family.

I was given this ebook to read and asked in return to give honest review of it. I would have bought this book and the next even if I stop receiving free copies I love this series and reread the stories again and again.

It's the last two months of the year and a time for celebrations of light and love. The triplet girls have come up with an ingenious plan to merge Solstice, Divali, Yule, Hanukkah and Christmas into one ongoing winter party by issuing each member of Witch Central a single name and tasking them to come up with that individual's dream come true. But interspersed with all this thinking and planning, the orb rears its head again and tasks Lauren with the image of Nat and Jamie's future son, playing in the snow and building a snowman. It's been two years since the birth of their delightfully magical daughter, and Nat is slowly sinking into depression as each month she fails to again become pregnant. Having come from a single child home, and one that ignored this lonely child throughout her life, she was looking forward to her own large family to hold and love. While Witch Central has certainly folded her into their extended family, she and Jamie keep looking to bring this possible son to life. These two plots, dreams come true and orb prophesies, are interwoven in a tale of sorrow, hope, friendship and love as only Ms. Geary can accomplish. By the end of this story, I was unabashedly crying and cannot wait for the next Witch Central story. Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I seriously don't know what to say about this book that won't come across as sycophantic!

Ms Geary's books catch me immediately whether its laughter or sorrow. I have now come to the conclusion that I just can't read them at work or on public transport - people get weirded out when you suddenly burst out laughing at the thought of a little boy sulking because he can't create a working holographic dragon puppet or crying at the thought of yet another month of waiting for Nat.

These books flow so easily, the characters are so well drawn and detailed that I would love to think that they exist somewhere. That Berkeley is full of witches and wizards (with an outpost in Canada).

The plot of this novel is one of the darkest and most emotional of the three series that Ms Geary has written based in and around her witching community in Berkeley. That said, there are uplifting and humerous moments - Aervyn is a star and I even came to love the 'giant marble'.

I am not reviewing the plot, because each and every person will view it a different way and my opinion is, read and see what you think yourself. I will say that this book focuses on Nat (and Jamie) which is a nice thing as she has been more of a support structure in all the other books.

Debora Geary has created an amazingly warm and loving family of characters, which just keep growing. This newest book deals with some painful and difficult situations, infertility and adoption, with love, support, compassion, realism, and respect! I found myself waiting to see what happened at the overwhelming ending, just like all the characters were! The Witch Central Series only gets better as characters are added, and previous familiar characters are brought back to keep up with their lives as well. The magic that Ms. Geary brings to her books is infectious, contagious, and draws you in quickly and completely. The excitement begins at the first page and continues to the very last word, and I find myself incredibly surrounded by the characters at the end. It's almost surreal, when you close the story and realize once again the author has taken you on a trip, and you do not want to end. Excellent story, talented writer. Recommended to all, young or old, you will not be disappointed!

Wow does Debora Geary pack a punch. I'm entirely sleep deprived as I simply COULD NOT put this book down. I cried. Happy tears and unhappy ones. This book is heart wrenching and quite simply drenched in emotion.

The Orb is feeling chatty again. I love how DG has given that glass marble personality. As a result we follow Nat and Jamie and their journey to get their foretold little boy. Tied in with this journey is Witch Central celebrating the Solstice and all the other celebrations that fall in that time period. Each member (and a few who didn't expect to be) have drawn a name to make their dreams come true. Some of the creations are amazing.

The book is a journey and ends beautifully with more than one dream coming true. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next one.

(Nb: If trying to fall pregnant is a trigger, please be wary of this book. It may perfectly capture what you're feeling or simply be too real)

These books would make the best television series.

Again the tiny threads that lead and follow from one person to another drop you into the center of a family that deal all together with anything that plagues on of their own.

Nat and Jamie fell in love at first sight and through precognition saw a boy child that they were to love fully. After having a girl child and trying to get pregnant again and make this son with the beautiful smile a reality, they are fighting the realisation that they might need to let the dream go.

With help from healers and the assistance from sources you wouldn't begin to trust, life takes a surprising turn for this family and leads them in a totally different direction. Do they give up the dream of this child, or do they fight and putothers at risk to make their pre-sight a reality?

Fair warning to have a couple tissues at the ready, especially in the last few chapters.

So powerfully beautiful.

Nothing else could really describe it. The feeling that started in my chest and simply spread everywhere, there have been hard times for these Witches, and harder times to come. But past all the stuff that made my throat feel like it was going to collapse and rivers run from my eyes... it was beautiful, simply, powerfully, beautiful.

Not everyone has what would class you a witch in this group, but everyone of them are family and loved. Natalia... loved by everyone in the books and certainly outside the books, life had certainly left her hurting but she found love and family in these witches. Just reading this book alone, you know nothing could be greater than that love and family.

Go forth and read this book if you haven't already, and become immersed in something beautiful.

If you've read the first books you know all about Jamie and Nat's love story and the vision that Jamie had when he met Nat. A little boy playing in the snow. He's theirs as much as their baby girl Kenna is. Two years have passed though and no sight of the baby boy is there. Every month is a let down. Nat is naturally an upbeat person, but the negative tests every month are starting to wear on her. How could they be shown this vision but it not come true?

Again all of the usual Witch Central peeps are here. I just love Aervyn, his innocence and love shines through him. He's so powerful, but he's so giving and loving. He's the future and shares the love that is Witch Central. This one was a hard one for me. I've watched my sister struggle with infertility, I just wish I had a couple of healer witches to help her. These books are pure and simple magic.

Witch central is wonderful!

Witch central is wonderful!

I stumbled across this wonderful family of witches in A Modern Witch. Deborah Geary has drawn me into this family with dimensional characters that have health an continue to grow with each book and with what they learn from one another. the witch central world is so finely developed that it seems one could visit Berkeley, California and not only buy a house from a witch but soon have it filled with their fun loving friends and family at an impromptu housewarming supplied with pasta and cookies (but no green stuff!) I am eagerly anticipating the next book so I can catch up with my growing group of friends.

What a series!

I have laughed, looked in wonder and cried tears of sadness and of joy. Deborah Geary has created a world of love, family and sharing. Her characters are beautifully written. The story is always fun & interesting with an underlying message of truth, love and family at its heart. Her latest gift is astonishing in both the message and magic. Some characters have magic and some, the magic of love. All of her books are awe inspiring but none as much as her newest...An Unlikely Witch. You will not be sorry to take this journey. Start at the beginning. It will be worth it.

I have read all of Debora Geary's books, and I am absolutely in love with each character. It's nice to read about witches who are not always in a fight or running away from the bad guy. Debora writes her books with so much detail that you feel like you are part of the story. I have laughed and cried with each book. The only other author that has made me feel emotionally invested in a story is Nora Roberts. I am not comparing them as authors, because their writing styles are different, but they both know how to tell a story so that you don't want to put the book down until the end. I am not so patiently waiting for the new release!! :-)

Geary's books are special to me in making me feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing that there is love and hope in the world. This one was particularly dear to me as it deals with the difficulty of walking a path alone even though there are those who support you. While I cannot relate to the whole desiring for pregnancy (nor will I need to anytime soon), I believe Geary has a broader message to share. Her message illuminates the possibilities in life, the need to hold on, and the need to let go. I am looking forward to her next book as usual. The under five foot cast of characters are always a treat for me to read about. :D

Loved it! A promise fulfilled

Anyone who follows the Modern Witch series, will love this book... the theme connects back to the first of the series "A Modern Witch" with Jamie, Nat & Lauren taking the focus point. That's what makes this special, this deals with a common human condition that many couples suffer over, but it wouldn't be Witch Central if it couldn't be twisted and rewoven to create a gift for the reader.

Quick summary of book: "Making your kid an only child is the worst thing you can ever do, and is basically child abuse! I'm going to carry on crying about not being able to have this specific imaginary child! Never mind I have a kid already and plenty of people can't even have that! Wah!"

I usually love these books but this one was just ridiculous. It was so melodramatic.

It took me so long to finish this book. Basically cause my Mama Debbie got me into the series. She bought me the first and loaned me the rest. Except for the last few. All in ebook. I loved everyone and cried with this one. Knowing if Mama was still with us she would have loved it. There is one more in the series but they do not sell them in ebook st all now. Wanted to read the last in ebook. Guess audiobook on audible ia how I will have to do it.

Debora Geary sure knows how to tank hard on the heart strings. I had tears streaming down my cheeks for a good third of this book, some sad, some happy. It may have touched a little closely on some of my own issues that I won't go into here but definitely relatable to many people. I'd like to be able to bask in the Sullivan/Walker clan just a little in real life though my family isn't too shabby.

Even better than the last book. Five stars all the way! In the very first A Modern Witch book, Jamie has a precog vision of his future wife and the little boy they will someday have. Well, precog isn't certain but when everything else has already happened, they're getting very eager for him to arrive. However, the only glimpse of him they've seen is him playing in the snow outside their home and knowing he's theirs...

This is such a sweet book that made me cry a bit in many places. The witching community really come together to help Nat and Jamie out; comforting them and trying to discover if there's any fertility problems. There's a real sense of community in this book; Nat tries to carry the load by herself but when the community realise this (thank to Super Boy), they're ready to help with all their love and support. One of my favourite parts in this book is when Nat asks for a young healers help, Ginia, who's only 11 years old. Nat says that you have to let go of some dreams to make room for new ones (like when her baby daughter couldn't fit into a toy bus), so please tell her if her bus is too small. It's such a good way to word it but no one else knows what this means.

Lauren's famous crystal ball makes another appearance in this book. Lauren finally tries to consult with it more often but it doesn't know what it's allowed to show her. By the end of the book they're both finally getting along, the journey is a bit rocky and very sweet! The crystal ball is one of my favourite characters (if you can call it that).

This book really makes you feel the emotions the characters feel. The way Geary writes lets you experience Nat and Jamie's journey somewhat realistically from the point of view of a friend, hence the crying when you read it bit. I'd definitely recommend this book, it's absolutely superb! A definite must read. Just to prove it, this is the second time I've read this book and it didn't disappoint.

This book left me so happy! I loved this book so much!

I love how these last few books have been revisiting ideas and people from earlier books in the series. We finally get to know more about the little boy in the snow! I loved how we were able to see more sides to Nat and Jamie in this book that we haven't seen before. I love the vulnerability we get to see from Nat and how she grows in this book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good character driven book with lots of warm fuzzies.
