Audiobook: This was my first experience with Hourly History's work, and I enjoyed it. The history was short as the audiobook was only 56 minutes long. The story was a very brief overview of the life of Tom Petty, his music, and his rise to fame. I liked that the tale included short anecdotes about Tom's life. I am looking forward to more history notes from Hourly History. Matthew J. Chandler-Smith's narration was good as his tone was professional and interesting. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
These books are not the best writing, you will ever read. They do, however, provide a brief summary of the people or historical situations they concern. You might not want to read a full biography on a musician, movie star or some other historical figure, but nevertheless want to know a little more about them. That's exactly what these books provide.
Being a Tom Petty I was very pleased that this book ticks most of Tom’s musical highlights and did not get bogged down in his personal life. A worthwhile read for any Tom Petty fan,
I'm from Gainesville,FL so I've known about Tom Petty for a long time. I liked a lot of what he and his bands did. But the author wasn't really careful. Gainesville is not in the Florida panhandle. Not bad, but not really good.
A brief overview of Tom Petty's life/career. Growing up in Florida, gets interested in music, makes a garage band, gets more successful, snags a record deal, and away his career goes. I was hoping for a little more detail, but it is only 58 pages, so it is quick and dirty.
Until the Travelling Wilburys, Tom Petty wasn't on my radar. I don't remember hearing his songs or even being aware of his band. After reading this book, I didn't learn very much about the person Tom Petty was. I saw that he and his father were at odds with each other and avoided attending his mother's funeral because he was so famous (which would overshadow her funeral service).
There was no information about how he met his second wife and if they had kids together. There wasn't much family information at all. I learned more about Tom Petty's drummers than his family. I was sorry to see so little information about the Travelling Wilburys. I thought the idea of a superband was wonderful and gave older artists a new lease on life.
