Married to Magic #5

A Dawn with the Wolf Knight

Rate this book
To enter the woods as a human means death… But I am no mere human. They call me, “witch."

As one of the last surviving witches, Faelyn’s sole duty is to keep the protective barriers on the forests where the lykin roam—creatures who can shed flesh for fur—sparing nearby humans from their violent, beastly natures. When she has an unlikely encounter with the rare, primordial spirit of the moon, Faelyn finds herself not only the object of the Wolf King’s desire, but essential to his ability to keep his crown.

Taken to the magical land of Midscape, the Wolf King claims her as his bride to control the moon spirit’s magic that now resides within Faelyn. But Faelyn refuses to resign herself and the spirit Aurora to a life of servitude underneath the king’s cruel rule. Faelyn hatches a dangerous plan for them both to escape and help comes from an unlikely ally.

Evander is the king’s blisteringly handsome, loyal knight, right hand, and Faelyn’s sworn protector…on the outside. But appearances are not what they seem. He plots against the king’s brutality at every turn and helping Faelyn escape will serve these ends. But altruism for Faelyn and the trapped moon spirit isn’t his only motivation… Evander is hiding secrets, and they might change Faelyn’s life forever.

A desperate plot to escape. A brutal king. Ancient powers. And a sworn protector who can’t keep his hands off her… Will she be taken as the Wolf King’s bride? Or will she manage an escape that will free her heart and change her fate forever?

A Dawn with the Wolf Knight is a complete, *stand alone novel*. For readers who love romantasy novels with second-chance/long-lost love, life-changing female friendships, deep lore, forbidden romance, slow-burn, and a happily ever after. While it is set in the Married to Magic universe, readers can start with this book.

Simply put- not for me. Idk what went wrong with this series after book 3 but it hasn't been the same. Given how bad book 4 was, my expectations for this were already low but it still disappointed me.

The book starts off dull, gets better in the middle and then goes back to being dull. I was truly bored throughout. There was not much to keep me interested in the first place. The characters, the story, the writing all failed for me. Above all that, the slow pacing and dragging of the plot didn't help either. I skimmed a bit towards the end cause I stopped caring.

Faelyn, is a dumb fmc. Sorry. She is so naive, it got annoying at one point. She doesn't even know what to think about who. She doesn't know what to do. She is such a pushover, it annoyed me so much. Evander tries to keep things interesting by engaging in banter with her but the fmc has the personality of a rock. Evander himself got boring at one point and the man can barely take charge of leadership. I couldn't care less about Aurora tbh. The whole plotline with her was meh. Corin was okay. I liked his manipulative mind as it made me at least finish the book 🤦‍♀️

I didn't care about the magic or fantasy elements. It was plain boring. The romance was meh. Faelyn and Evander have their sweet moments and have chemistry, good steamy moments but they make such a boring couple, I don't have much to comment on 😅 I will however say that after the betrayal, there was plenty of room to grovel and that wasn't included? They just accepted it and moved on?? It pissed me off.

Am glad this is over and I get to read other books now.

Hear me out on this one.. I loved this book, the chemistry between Faelyn and Evander are off the charts! But perhaps I have outgrown the whole sexy talk thing because the line "pleasure myself" kind off got to the point were it was just a tad too much. Apart from that I really liked our weaver witch.

This reads like a more adult fantasy plot.. but the characters are in their early twenties and act/speak like it. There's definitely an audience for it... it just isn't me.

I've said this for a while now but I've been getting more and more picky with the fantasy genre!

"It is what I desire. But also not what I desire," I admit to myself and him. "My heart is knotted."
"Then allow me to untie it." He opens his eyes again. "I do not wish to leave you. I will spend forever with you, whether forever is years, or one last night. If forever is free, or chained."

I was incredibly excited for this installment of the Married to Magic series. I enjoyed the rest but was really looking for something that would blow me away and when I heard the next novel was going to be wolves, I thought for sure this would be the one.

But I could not stand the FMC. I liked her at first but once she ended up in the lykin camp I was so frustrated with her. She was weak willed, naive, and later on when she learns some information about Evander, she's completely ruled by her emotions and makes TERRIBLE decisions.

So just ended up being another story where you have a pretty decent MMC but you're wondering the whole time what he really sees in the FMC.

There were a lot of things I still liked about this book but I'm still a little clouded by my disappointment 😞

The best book in the series by far, I loved it. It seems like Kova finally found her groove again after the last one, I'm looking forward to whatever book six will be about now.

Pretty much everything worked for me here, the pacing, the story, the romance, the worldbuilding & of course the cameo.

Since the series is interconnected, I was expecting cameos when I started it, but after 4 books of completely different character casts, I wasn't expecting one to happen now. It's probably because this was meant to be the final book, but I'm not complaining!!

This is also the only one so far that I've read solely by myself, and it wasn't on purpose, I just wanted to finish it this month and couldn't wait for Audible to deliver my credit. I did miss the voice acting, but it was a great experience either way.

I had a hard time putting it down, I was really invested. I was even falling for Conri (I know!!) until his true nature was revealed...and maybe even a lil bit after, if I'm being honest. His supernatural charm works even through a screen, who'd have thought?

Compared to book four, where it was a slow burn, Faelyn and Evander's relationship progressed much quicker, while still feeling realistic and not insta-lovey. The passion that usually comes with shifter romances was there as well, I have zero complaints.

The Aurora storyline may or may not have made me cry, she deserved better. And yeah, the ending should've wrapped up the other books too, but I guess it makes sense that it didn't, if Kova knew there would be at least one more after this. Hopefully it'll be just as good as this one.

2.5/5.0

I usually thoroughly enjoy Ms. Kova’s books, and fly through them in a day - two at the most (for the longer ones). This one took me almost five days to finish. So I’ve really had to contemplate why…

Reasons:

1. There is so much filler wrapped around what is actually happening! So many words that don’t progress the actual story - explanations of stuff that don’t matter etc. I would often find my mind wandering as I read, then decide to do something else because I was BORED!

2. Faelyn is the most vapid FMC I have read in a Looooong time. And, I honestly love female characters who are kind and optimistic, so it’s not that. Her actions and responses were just so… childish? Wimpy? Wish-washy? I honestly can’t find the words… and then what was still a three star read hit one star FAST! ⬇️

3. Chapter 32 nailed the coffin on ANY enjoyment I found in reading a book with this main character. Here, Faelyn exhibited the most STUPID, RIDICULOUS, UNFORGIVABLE actions for any woman that can process a sentence in her brain! Luckily the overall story’s action and suspense near the end caught my interest enough that I could squeeze that rating up a bit later.

4. Evander’s secret is eye-rollilngly obvious from the minute his character hits the page. Ms. Kova must have done that intentionally. Just not sure why, because it just makes Faelyn look that much worse.

5. Also not sure why, but the over abundance of time spent on sex scenes just didn’t fit well. Maybe it’s Faelyn’s character, maybe this particular storyline didn’t progress smoothly with the sex. *shrugs*

6. The ending. While there is a quick HEA, this book is supposed to be the ending of a series. So, one would think we would get an overall wrap-up and HEA for the world as a whole. In fact, when the topic of the Elf king and his human queen was introduced, I was almost sure we would get to see everyone we fell in love with in previous books - then mold it all into one great ending. More fool, me. Nothing. Nothing at all.

*sigh* My disappointment is deep - yet my faith in Ms. Kova still stands.

It is clear in each book from the Married to Magic series that Elise Kova has a strong sense of the world she’s creating. While I thought she bit off a bit more than she could chew in her first couple novels, each one seems to be improving. And A Dawn with the Wolf Knight is a clear feature of this series. From the moment I started this book, I knew it was going to provide me with everything I’d asked for. The characters are smart, strong and noble. The world building and setting create and incredibly eerie yet magical atmosphere. The romance and friendships are kind-hearted. Overall, I really loved this story! My only complaint was that there was some insta love, but the plot twist ended up explaining it away. Even if you haven’t read any of the other books in this series, I highly recommend picking up this book!

The final book in the Married to Magic series! I think the best part of these books is that they are true interconnected standalones. I always tell people they do not need to be read in order, you can just read the ones that sound good to you. I personally am a big fan of wolf shifter books so I was super excited for this one to come out. I had come off some darker wolf shifter romances so I was happy that this one was a little less intense. It was a great fantasy palate cleanser to read between a few epic high fantasies.

Underwhelming.

Especially after A Duet with the Siren Duke where we were suddenly introduced to primordial Gods and the potential end of the Eversea, which was also strange, but I digress. This book was simply Wolf Politics. And the werewolf lore wasn't even well-developed.

Not to be mean, but I found it to be a bit vapid. And predictable.

Faelyn was a big ol’ dumb dumb for the vast majority of the book. Rarely have I seen such a gullible little idiot. She’ll just believe anyone at face value. Even the obvious villains?

I clocked the hidden identity half-way through, but I didn’t mind. Made me feel better about the love story that was unfolding.

I hate when FMC’s play second fiddle to past lovers.

Also, I don’t think it was meant to be a super secret identity. I’m not a genius. If I managed to clock it, I’m assuming the author made it obvious intentionally.

Although, I still think the relationship between Evander & Faelyn progressed a little too quick. There wasn’t much build up.

Evander was pretty boring, but at least he had a brain unlike Faelyn, who was boring and stupid.

Conri was a villain, but his scenes were entertaining. What can I say! The man had charisma even though he was a rat bastard.

This was the 5th and final book of the series. I don’t think it lived up to the previous books’ set-up? Didn’t love the ending. I assumed this one would tie the series together, but it didn't. Not really.

This series was simply fine and perfectly alright.

Nothing more, nothing less.

The cover is gorgeous, tho!

The potential was there!!! 😭😭😭
This feels like just a rough draft of what it could’ve been.

Started off so great. I was hooked. I loved the characters and story as it was unfolding. I liked that the Fmc was kind and seemed to have power somewhere in her but didn’t come off, stupid? I guess is the word.
But then around chapter 30 it completely reversed and the Fmc completely gave in to the ‘gullible liability to everyone around them’ trope that I was worried about. After that she became more and more insufferable as her stupidity and powerlessness dragged this book on.

There were so many plot holes and things that didn’t make sense to me.

They kept talking about how powerful the moon spirit was but she was as weak as a human. Her power going to the fmc did nothing but allow the fmc to be a +1 to the party. Sure the FMC could now talk to the spirits, but what benefit was that? She used them like 3-4 times during the book but never at the exact moments she could’ve to actually be free. She’s supposedly this strong witch but not once did she do anything besides be “positive” in the face of danger. 🙄

Everyone was just so weak. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The weakness of all the spirits she spoke with didn’t make sense. They’re supposed to be these primordial beings yet they do one small favor for her and they’re tapped out?? Eh. Could’ve been thought out better.
And then the favor is like some one-off thing that only briefly helps the fmc when they could’ve easily expended the same amount of energy and actually solved the problem in some cases.

Example: she begs the water spirit to help when Evander is fighting that a-hole who saw them banging it out in the woods (forgot his name), and the water spirit just splashes water on the guy and shoves him away and then leaves. Like what?? Out of all the things you could’ve done - that’s it. And you’re tapped out of energy?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Another one is the scene where they’re running into the abandoned town to try and escape the wolf king and she asks the earth spirit for help and it breaks up the earth but just not where the wolf king is?? lol what?! Like swallow that mf up. If they can’t kill him then close the earth around him with his head sticking out of the earth so he can still breath but can’t move. Something!

Just didn’t make sense. This part of the world/character building needed some serious development and thought.

The ending had me almost throw my phone (read on ku). It was bleh. Loose ends and not really epic or happy. The saving grace was the epilogue but even then it was mid. Also - now all of a sudden the moon spirit can try to harm the king? Girl stop. The convenience of it all was stupid and didn’t even make sense. She had to leave the territory to be able to kill him?? Hadn’t she done that when she went to the human world and found Faelyn?

It was a strong 4.5 first half of the book and went to like a 2.5 at best. I’m going to be nice and rank an even 3 right now. But I’m so sad. I loved the idea of this story so much. I wish she would’ve gone back and done a final draft. 🥹

Idk if this is the last book of the series but Am I the only one who thinks it will be about how the kings/queens of elves, fae, vampires and mermaids come together to defeat something? or unite all worlds? and remove the Vain?!

Overall, this was what I expected for this series. Definitely better than the last merman-based installment, but ultimately they have all left me wanting more.

Because they are standalones they tend to be fast paced, and I think this one in particular suffered from trying to fit too much into a short form. It also felt more disconnected from the already established world due to the wolves’ isolation. The first few books felt more intertwined, but this and the siren book didn’t feel the same.

The romance unfolded at a breakneck speed due to the format, but I really struggle to connect to stories at that pace. I need time to get to know my characters and for relationships to feel more realistic (even if there is a werewolf guy involved lol).

We have a relatively weak witch who has ZERO connections in her life other than her recently passed grandmother (recluse much?), a spirit trapped in a human body in need of assistance, and the werewolf sent to hunt her down.

I loved the relationship between Faelyn and Aurora, it was adorable. A strong friendship that blossoms from a selfless act >>. Aurora is the moon spirit, and many years ago she was trapped in a human form in order to be with her lover. In the years since she has become a prisoner to the varying wolf kings to be used for her power. She finally makes a break for it and encounters our sweet little woodsy weaver witch Faelyn who drops everything to help a stranger in need. Evander is a knight for the wolf king sent to return Aurora to the pack.

The premise was good, but would have been better for a series. The relationships could have been developed more naturally and Aurora’s lore could have been explored in greater detail. The pacing at the beginning was great, but as soon as Faelyn is taken to the pack things get messy. The whole focus at that point is her trying not to sleep with the wolf king.. and that she has to flick the bean with Evander nearby in order to stave off the crazy lust pheromones put off by Conri (wolf king). That was just insane and out of place for a story with good vibes. It was like we took a hard right turn into mindless smut content while in the middle of the plot. It felt like childish and weak writing. Once we stopped using this thinly veiled excuse for her to be attracted to Evander it got a bit better. But then they just take off for a week to fuck in the woods? Oh ! But don’t worry, they might look for a spirit along the way. Then the ending.. babe why did we try to squeeze all of that in there. We should have left it at the clearing. The epilogue style of the last couple of chapters was unnecessary and rushed. It tried to speed up the aftermath to get that “happy ending” moment, but it felt fake and weird.

I would recommend everyone read the Air Awakens series, and possibly the first 2 of Married to Magic- otherwise you’re not getting the true talent that Elise Kova has to offer! She is totally capable of plot and romance, but the standalones are hit and miss. She’s got too much good stuff to fit in one book. :)

Picture this: you're gearing up for an epic finale, expecting primordial gods, world-ending chaos, and some intense werewolf lore—only to be handed a plate of...wolf politics. Yep. *Wolf Politics*. Faelyn, our leading lady, is like a confused puppy, following shady characters around like they’re giving out treats. Sweet summer child, stop trusting every villain with a smirk!

But wait, it gets better (or worse, depending on how you look at it). This book suddenly decides to take a hard left into "horny for the wolf king and his guard" territory. Faelyn goes from being your standard clueless heroine to full-on, can't-think-straight-because-the-wolf-king-is-hot levels of thirst. And it's not just a light sprinkle of hormones—no, this is a full-blown monsoon. Girl's got it *bad*.

Speaking of thirst, let’s talk about Conri. He’s the real MVP here. Villain? Sure. Charisma? Off the charts. Honestly, I was more excited about his scenes than anything the main couple had going on. Evander, our male lead, was basically a sentient loaf of bread next to Conri’s spice. The whole time I kept thinking, "Why isn’t Conri the main character? Why??” So much wasted potential!

And the love story? It had all the buildup of a microwave dinner. Faelyn and Evander's relationship felt like someone hit the fast-forward button, leaving zero time for any real connection. Oh, and that sex scene? It was so dull, I laughed the whole way through. Faelyn might've been in bliss, but I was just waiting for it to be over. The girl was clearly just *horny* at this point, not in love.

By the time I got to the end, I was left scratching my head, wondering what the heck happened. This was supposed to be the epic conclusion to the series, right? Well, it didn’t quite stick the landing. The narrative went off the rails, lost in Faelyn's hormone-fueled fog, and I couldn't even tell what the main goal was anymore.

In summary: Faelyn was a hot mess, Evander was a boring side dish, and Conri was the star we all deserved. If only the book had focused on him! Instead, we got a chaotic, inconsistent ride that left me laughing, confused, and a little disappointed. Ah, well. At least Conri was entertaining!

Bueno, BUENO, BUENO. No tengo palabras.

All premise and buzzwords, little to no substance.

This book is truly cringe for half the time, but it does improve in pace a tiny bit after the middle. The characters feel like actual cardboard cutouts, so one dimensional and boring. Every time the words "alpha" and - god forbid - "MATE" are uttered I wanted to retreat into my torso like a turtle out of terminal amounts of cringe.

The twist is so bad it actually made the female lead more bland somehow. I understand making the female lead so devoid of personality is so the reader can project themselves into the story, but I'd rather just read a good story about two interesting characters than about one barely interesting character interacting with a brick wall for 400+ pages. Faelyn's only interests include Evander and spirits - the former doesn't even count and the latter is the absolute bare minimum to make her a witch.

Here's my ranking for the Married to Magic books before my review:

1. A Dance With the Fae Prince
2. A Duet With the Siren Duke
3. A Dawn with the Wolf Knight
4. A Duel with the Vampire Lord
5. A Deal with the Elf King

I like these stand alone romance novels, they feel like Hallmark movies in a way. You know exactly what you are getting when reading them, and they have predictable plots you can enjoy for some smutty fantasy romance. I really like them all, and Wolf Knight was no different.

Wolf Knight felt significantly smaller in scale for what the characters could lose, the romance felt rushed. And since the book revolves around the romance, it all felt rushed. I described the first book as having no soul, and though I do feel the remaining and this have one, it still feels hollow and shallow, like the shelf of what could have been a much better love story. I usually complain about books having more pages than they need to, but I believe this one especially could benefit from tweaks to extend the romance and its stakes a little further.

It was an okay read, to have fun and spend time. I was slightly disappointed with the story being too predictable and the romance being quick. I think there could have been lots of potential for a different one with endless more ache and slow-burn, but that's not what this was. Still fun.

4 ⭐️ with an asterisk

Okay so this is one of those tricky reviews where my enjoyment was probably impacted by the fact that I read an absolute banger right before it. You know when your brain’s still living in another story and you can’t help but compare? Yeah that.

But! A Dawn With The Wolf Knight was still a solid and intriguing read. I loved Faelyn … she’s one of those FMCs who’s gentle but fierce, kind but determined, and her bond with the spirits (especially Aurora) really tugged at my heart. That whole element was beautifully done and felt really unique.

Evander was deliciously mysterious even though I wanted to scream “JUST TELL HER THINGS, PLEASE” The man hoards secrets like they’re Pokémon cards. But his connection with Faelyn worked and their chemistry had some seriously swoony moments.

I think if I’d read this at a different time, I might have rated it even higher. So I’m sitting at a solid 4 stars with the disclaimer that this might be one of those “it’s not you, it’s my emotional book hangover” situations …

DNFd at 54%

The beginning was good and I read about 40% in a day but I felt like the plot was dragging a bit and there wasn’t enough scenes for me with the main love interest. Not to mention the FMC was kinda dumb and very naive it was annoying. She had more scenes with the villain of the book than her main man and then next thing you know her and the MMC just sleep together and bam established relationship basically. No buildup or chemistry. Wasn’t feeling it anymore after that and didn’t care enough to read so I stopped.

A Dawn with the Wolf Knight is a captivating blend of romance, magic, and danger set against a richly imagined world where witches, lykin, and ancient moon spirits collide.
Faelyn’s fierce independence and cleverness make her easy to root for, especially when she’s thrust into a high-stakes political game as the Wolf King’s unwilling bride. I really appreciated her constant and unwavering loyalty that she showed to her friends.
The magical land of Midscape is beautifully detailed, filled with danger and enchantment that adds a lush backdrop to the unfolding drama.
The slow-burn romance between Faelyn and Evander is full of tension and chemistry, with every stolen glance and touch crackling with anticipation. Their partnership grows from mutual necessity into something much deeper, and the forbidden nature of their attraction makes every moment between them all the more satisfying.
I think sometimes the story was lost in the deep lore woven in throughout the book. The history of the lykin, the moon spirit, and Faelyn’s witchcraft were difficult to tie to the larger world of Midsape. The world has grown more complex over the course of the series but this one didn’t seem to intertwine as well as others have. There are moments when the pacing feels uneven, and some of the scenes feel repetitive.
A Dawn with the Wolf Knight delivers an enjoyable and immersive experience. The slow-burn romance, the dangerous political intrigue, and Faelyn’s fight for freedom were all captivating. These books have always served as great palate cleaners for me!

The book was way too long. I have that problem with this series. All the book except the first one are way too long and so full of filler. It's a decent series, good to pass the time but it could go straight to the point. I don't understand why she didn't kill the king early on. He was a bad person from the start and he didn't hide it.
