All Mixed Up

Rate this book
Nikki has a lot going on at the moment.

She’s the best sound engineer and mixer at XY Records, she’s working on a super-secret project with a pop megastar, and holding the busier-than-usual studio together.

The last thing she wants or needs is her ex-fiancé to start working in the studio over the summer. She’s over it—him. Obviously. Being ghosted has that effect. But working near someone she used to love has made her life that much more complicated.

Andre has it all figured out. Two and half years ago he had no idea what he was doing when he walked away from the love of his life. But time has given him perspective, and he’s grown up. Which is why the paleontology professor is working part-time at his ex’s recording studio. Because he wants to make amends. And maybe win her back.

Will Nikki give him the chance he thinks he’s ready for? Or will it be her turn to walk away from him?

'All Mixed Up' is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #8 in the Common Threads series, Seduction in the City World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Heidi Hutchinson writes slow burn rock star romances for contemporary readers who like humor with their hotties. She has both open and closed door series filled with relatable characters and swooney yumminess. Double Blind Study, her go-to series, is closed door and follows a band in emotional turmoil and the women who love them.

When she’s not writing about wild hearted women and hunky heroes, she’s watching Doctor Who or trying to find the perfect gluten free pizza crust for her pizza shaped celiac heart. She lives in the Black Hills with her alarmingly handsome husband, their fearless child, and a rather large (and spoiled) dog.

She’s fueled by messages from her readers and too much coffee.
And a whole lotta love.

THE DOUBLE BLIND STUDY SERIES is an exciting romance series about rock stars in recovery. The Double Blind Study band has already lived the rock and roll cliché. This is life after. Full of humor, heart, and slow burn romance. Each book can be read alone but it is best if read in order. Cliffhanger free.

THE SOARING BIRD SERIES follows a group of extreme sports enthusiasts as they navigate life and love living on the California coast. Slow burn romantic comedies that can be read individually, but best if read in order. Cliffhanger free.

THE IN BETWEEN DUET SERIES is a slow burn unconventional romance that explores the connections of science and poetry. Occasionally intense moments of personal clarity and heartfelt confessions. Filled with touches of humor and real world obstacles. Cliffhanger free.

IN COLD MUD SERIES is a small series revolving around the politics and relationships of horse racing. Not a romance series. Definitely family drama.

NOTE: All of Heidi Hutchinson’s books take place in the Double Blind Study series. Each series can be read on their own but there are often crossover characters you may recognize.

DNF at 33%.

I'm tired of the heroine lusting after the hero and acting like it makes sense that he's back after ghosting her 2.5 years ago.

Why doesn't she challenge him and tell him he sucjs? Why doesn't he confess he's a douche canoe and is there to win her back?

If I'm going to read a second chance romance, I need better than this.

Now I can't really say that I like this series and to be honest Idon't see what it has to do with yarn or wool or whatever you call it. But I love the books that play in the XY Records studio, no pun intended,

The books that take place at the studio are Key Change, Lost Track and now this lovely gem.

Nikki has been there right from the beginning and I really liked her but here she was like a puppy with a heart of frigging sunshine. Girl, you should have made him grovel more but she didn't and she did ramble a wee alot of André's abs. She had a short circuit every time they were around.

André knows when he has screwed up and two and a half years ago that is exactly what he did. A drunk dial at Xmas gives me hope to put some wrongs to right but it isn't going to be easy.

Now I am not the biggest fan of second chance romances. There is always a reason why it didn't work in the first place but here the reasoning was okay. Besides Nikki tried to move on she was dating when André came back. Four dates actually but Ryan kept on inviting André on their dates.

What I would like to see in the future for this series is a book with Asa, Al and Ryan.

Oh man. Andre and Nikki had some BAGGAGE they needed to work through. Not only with each other and their past relationship woes, but also with themselves. I mean, those two have some screaming imposter syndrome. One has it professionally and one personally and OUCH.

But before we get to their issues...I will say Andre really knows how to make an impression on a lady. Not only did he ghost her on what should have been the happiest night of her life, but he then proceeded to hit her with his car as he's about to roll back into her life. YIKES. Good thing Nikki is forgiving because banging up a lady (not in the fun way) is a tough way to try to rekindle a relationship.

On Nikki's end, she's spent the past two and a half years getting over Andre. And she's over him. Absolutely. It's probably just a fluke that she gets fluttery feelings when he's around. Seriously. Having him around the studio all day as he works on some much needed renovations isn't a big deal. Seriously. When he smiles at her, she's totally not moved. At all. Probably. Except, you know, she does and it is and she is.

It takes a little time, a little TLC, and Andre showing up to help with some roofing for these two to get to their happy place. No lie, it's a good place to be.

Falling in love with Heidi’s characters is so easy to do. Like, crazy head over heels in love. And yes, even with the heroine. I finished this book just moments ago and I’m pretty sure the smile on my face will remain there for the rest of the day.

***Added 4 days later***

Just like all the other books I’ve read by this author, I was immediately hooked, and I never wanted to say goodbye to these characters. Relatable feelings and situations made this book that much more enjoyable for me. It’s been a few days since I finished this book and I’m still thinking about it. It’s that good.

I always seem to think second chance romances aren’t really my jam. But after reading this superbly-written story about forgiveness, regrets, and second chances, I realize I have to stop saying that. They are absolutely my jam if they are written like this one.

Lovable characters with so much depth, a gripping storyline, and all the feels that squeezed my heart made this and outstanding read for me.

Nikki is one of those heroines you can’t help but adore. I could only wish to have a BFF like her. She’s kind and loving and giving and always thinking of others. And the sass! Love her even more for that. When she was betrayed in the worst way over two years ago, she can’t stop thinking she’s not good enough - for anything or anyone.

André, with his sexy suspenders and all, grabbed ahold of my heart and didn’t let go. His regret was strong, his determination to win Nikki back even stronger. Their ‘run-in’ after years of not seeing each other was quite jaw-dropping. That sure was one way to let her know he’s back in town. :) Their banter was adorable, making me smile constantly. Their sexual tension so thick I could feel it. These two together gave me all the warm fuzzies.

They both had so many issues to work through. And they both worked through them together…the second time around. They both realized how perfect for each other they were. Both were all in, and so was I.

If you’re looking for a well-written, second-chance romance with amazing characters who are easy to love, I highly recommend this book. I loved it so much!

Another fun story and I really enjoyed being back in this world. It actually even made me really want to go re-do my own story of a paleontologist in Chicago so that it fits into the SmartyPants world, and now I could maybe use Andre as a connection as well! But anyway, I loved Andre’s background, and I love how the story begins a bit of a car wreck. It was the perfect way for one of them to crash back into the other’s life.

Andre was a sweetie, really only wanting to do what he could to make Nikki happy, and even if she didn’t let him back into her life romantically, he’d be happy just being however he could be a part of her life. I liked how the characters even as they might have run from problems, were able to not make a HUGE drama scene that often becomes unrealistic in the stubbornness characters might exhibit. They had those human reactions, but were still able to figure things out as they could move on from feelings.

The author has a note at the beginning about how she normally does closed-door romance, but this one she said needed the open door to make the story feel right. It’s not anything over the top, so I think it won’t be too much for those used to her usual style. But I agree that it definitely worked for the story to be that way.

I was so looking forward to this book after the amazing previous two books Ms. Hutchinson wrote in this series and I was not disappointed!

This one is definitely a bit different because it's a second chance romance. I love that trope so I was all about it. I will say, this one felt kind of different. Not in a bad or wrong way. But usually when there's a second chance at romance, there's now a child involved or its been some ridiculous amount of time or there's been a misunderstanding that could have been easily cleared up if they'd just communicated.

This one had only been a couple of years, no children involved at all, and there wasn't a misunderstanding, but a ghosting. The hero just left the heroine with literally no communication at all for several years. He really did have to come crawling back and had to take all these baby steps to gain back her trust. It was different and I really liked it.

Thank goodness it was open door this time! The last two books were both disappointingly closed door. Having the on page sexy times really brings something extra to the heart of the story and their relationships. Ms. Hutchinson did an excellent job on the sex scene. Well written, not too long with just enough detail. She should write scenes for the other two books and just add them in there as bonus scenes!

I definitely recommend this book, but I also recommend reading Key Change and Lost Track first. Those stories definitely enhance this one. But at the same time, they aren't required to read for this one to make sense. Key Change is especially good so I highly recommend it!

I’ve read many a romance book and most of the time they lack relatability and genuine characters. Usually the guy is the alpha and everyone is attracted to him. And the girl, don’t even get me started on this. Heidi always seems to create real characters that are relatable. All Mixed Up is equal parts of amazing characters and story. The tension between Nikki and Andre is palpable and their history is some what painful. I think this is where I always love reading any book Heidi writes, because she takes the time to draw out a genuine and real history of the characters. Andre is like so many men afraid to deal with their trauma and work on themselves. Nikki is a bubbly optimist. Their love story is what you hope for in real life. Per usual Heidi created a quirky mix of notes to leave your heart and brain happy.

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.

As with the other books in the series this reads as a standalone. There are characters mentioned from the previous books by the same author, but they aren't necessary to the storyline of this book. I do highly recommend them as the previous books were excellent. If you want to get to know Johnny and Hannah check out Key Change, if you want to get to know Sabine and Dave (aka Sunshine Capone) check out Lost Track.

Nikki dreams of being a music producer. She works at a small recording studio as an engineer and she is amazingly talented. She has been working with an award winning popstar in secret who she connected with during another recording session. Nikki has what it takes to make this idea a smash hit, but she is letting doubt cloud her judgement. Enter Andre, Nikki's ex and love of her life. Andre is an archeology professor who moonlights as a carpenter on the side. He is also a disaster when it comes to feelings and relationships due to his jerk of a father. Andre sabotaged his relationship with Nikki because he was scared, but he never explained why. He also never stopped loving her. When Nikki's boss hires him to renovate part of the recording studio, the two of them are forced to spend some time together and they are forced to face the past and their feelings for one another.

I really loved getting to know Andre and Nikki. Imposter syndrome is real and dealing with self-doubt about your abilities is so relatable. Even if you are the most qualified person in the world, you can still doubt yourself and I think the author did a great job making both of the characters vulnerable in different ways and brought that forward. I loved that the side characters offered support and advice where needed. I loved Sabine and Dave from Key Change, and it was nice to see them as part of this story as well. I really enjoyed Asa and his no nonsense approach to dealing with Andre and Nikki, just a like a good best friend should act.

I love a good second chance romance and this delivers. The characters had good chemistry, but they don't dive right back into old patterns. They take their time getting to know each other and have the conversations they should have had previously while still maintaining the spark they always had. This has a moderate amount of spice but it isn't over the top and doesn't overwhelm the storyline. Overall, I loved this and highly recommend it as well as the other books in the series!

All Mixed Up starts out with a bang, well, a car accident, actually, definitely not the best way to "run into" the ex you can't forget.

The producer and the professor, Nikki and André haven't spoken in years, since The Ghosting, except for the drunk dial debacle neither one wants to remember.

It had to end. They are so different.
"She was a blabbermouth, constantly spilling her heart all over the place as if to trick someone into slipping and falling in love with her. And André kept his heart locked inside a vault surrounded by puzzles and mazes and miles of jungle overgrowth like a treasure hunter’s one last quest."

Of course,  there ARE tacos...and music...and ride or die friendships, Sunshine, all the beautiful things we have come to love from Heidi Hutchinson. There are new things, too, including shirtless suspenders, renovations, hedge diving (with shrimp!) and archaeology.

As adept with feelings as she is with words, Heidi tells a deep, emotional story about broken love and its underlying themes (hurt people hurt people, imposter syndrome, fear), healing, trust, friendship, being seen, second chances, growing confidence and chasing joy.

Heidi is a go-to author for me and this book is wonderful!! Second chance romance, musicians, small town are some of my favorite tropes. Heidi writes them fantastically.

Nikki is a strong, independent woman who is taking a chance on a new career. She is very talented, has some baggage, insecure at times but willing to try something new.

Andre is determined to make amends for his past mistakes. He’s a hard worker and talented craftsman, he has many regrets but is willing to prove he has changed.

Nikki and Andre are two delightful characters they will steal your hearts. They are both holding in some secrets but need to find the right time to let them out. As Nikki begins to trust Andre again, their friendship blooms and they become a great team.

So many wonderful emotions while reading this story. Your heart will be full and happy by the end of the book.

Wowee! Ms. Hutchinson steps out of her comfort zone, and boy, does she write the heat! Well done!

This is the story of Nikki and Andre.

A relationship cut short, and a ghost comes back to make amends.

I love this cast of characters. Nikki has the edge that makes her sharp but still has the vulnerabilities that make her all the more human. Andre is adorkable and so worth redemption.

Nikki and Andre's relationship is a bit jagged, but they fit together like puzzle pieces.

I loved the humor in this story, I was catching myself laughing out loud with a huge smile on my face throughout the story.

The world that Ms. Hutchinson has created in the world of Smartypants Romance is seamless and such a fun read. She has become one of my one-click authors!

Nikki is an amazing sound engineer. Everyone around her knows it. She would love to be a producer but she's never done it before. She used to be part of a band that really famously fell apart.

She was also ghosted. BY HER EX. Who comes back into her life by working at her job. Andre knows he made a huge mistake years ago by disappearing. He knows Nikki is the love of his life. And he knows he had a lot of making up to do. What better way than working part time at Nikkis recording studio?

Nikki is a sweetheart. Much, much better girl than me. She also kicks butt with the way she works and the way she dresses. She's let what happened with her previously affect her confidence.

But she grows in this story and I love a story when the MC gets opportunities she deserves. There's some romance too!

4.5 stars - Complex characters who fit together perfectly, I loved how Nikki and André truly appreciated what made the other person unique and quirky. The story started off with a bang (literally) and had me wondering how exactly these two would get past their history, but the characters put in the work and made it believable. André showed true growth and persevered until he was able to prove he wasn’t the same person. Nikki is truly one of the least judgmental people I have ever read about and I loved her “Life is art. And art is subjective. So no one gets to decide if someone else’s art is acceptable.” philosophy.

I did not want to finish this one. Nikki and Andre...well, I just want to carry them in my pocket...I will miss them. This is a second chance romance with great character depth. If you like a romance where there is genuine friendship along with the passion, you will like this book. I loved watching Andre be 'the hero who gets it right." And Nikki's journey to embrace her calling was delightful.

Another story well done.

Oh my heart. I love these two so much.

The love story that Heidi weaves between these two is beautiful and interspersed with appropriate amounts of sass, humour and pathos.

You've got to root for this pair to get their HEA. I devoured Every. Single. Word.

This truly is the story you need on your kindle. You won't be disappointed

I really enjoyed this latest SPR book by Heidi Hutchinson so much. Nikki and Andre’ are both very likable characters to begin with. And obviously still care very deeply for each other even through the hurt and time apart. They have both overcome or are overcoming a form of imposter syndrome, and I think everyone that works in any art form, or has a past of trauma or self doubt struggles with this too. So it was wonderful to see them come back together and forgive each other for their HEA.

A Fun Second Chance Romance

I really enjoyed this book. Nikki and Andre are great together. That perfect mix of balancing each other with their differences. I did wish it was a little longer and I was surprised by a couple of Nikki's actions. I also felt like Andre and Asa could have had a little more development in their relationship, but I also understand that was more of a side story. Overall a great read and I look forward to reading other books by Heidi Hutchinson.

Making music & second chances

Heidi Hutchinson has become one of my favorite writers to read. I love her stories set in the music industry which I know little about. I finished this second chance romance in two days. I was hooked from the get go. This can be read as a stand alone but characters from her previous books make appearances.

A second chance romance with Andre (Sabine’s brother) and Nikki (she’s been working with the gang at the recording studio). Excellent second chance romance with all the feels and cameos from the other couples we’ve encountered in this part of the series. A cameo from Sandra to get Andre into therapy, which he really needed to get his mind right.
