That Was Father Stu: A Memoir of My Priestly Brother and Friend

Rate this book
This inspiring, insightful, and often humorous look at the life of Father Stuart Long is told by his close friend Father Bart Tolleson. After their relationship began and almost ended with a practical joke, the two men were ordained together and forged a strong, lasting friendship. As the exuberant, edgy Father Stu confronted a rare degenerative disease, the former brawler and professional boxer used every ounce of his declining strength to fight the good fight for souls. Also included in this book is the enduring legacy of Father Stu, whose moving story continues to draw people closer to God, especially in times of suffering. His life inspired actor Mark Wahlberg to produce the film drama Father Stu , in which Wahlberg plays the title role. Father Bart, who was consulted by the makers of the film, provides interesting background on the movie. Illustrated with many photos.

After watching the movie, Father Stu with Mark Wahlberg, I decided to find out more about this Priest. This book was written by one of his closest friend, Father Bart.

Enjoyable in some parts, tedious, boring and repetitious in others. Father Stu’s life in this book is told in actual facts while the movie “glammed” up many parts of his life for sensationalism which the book addresses in the book. After all, Hollywood has to make money.

Great book, it got better the further into it that I got!
Fr. Stu really suffered and may he be blessed in heaven for his priesthood and the works that he’s still managing from above!

This is a lovely biography about Fr. Stuart Long (the book was made into a movie, the movie adaptations are specified at the end). This is also a story of faith, hope, ministry, and the surprising ways in which God acts through his disciples. I chose to read this book slowly, a few pages a day. That was a good choice for me. I recommend this book to anyone who wants something uplifting without being saccharin. This is not to say that Fr. Stu would have been the best priest for everyone, but he was good for many, which is a blessing.

In this memoir of one amazing priest, you actually get a lot of the story of the lives of not just one, but two amazing priests. It is a phenomenal story written in a way that makes you feel like you are right there with them in their adventures as well as their struggles. Well done Father Bart!

This book was so inspiring to read. I have yet to see the movie but that is the next thing on my list. I feel close to God after reading this. I got chill a couple times hearing Father Stu’s stories. It was definitely a good read!

I can’t really review a memoir because it’s like judging someone’s life and their memory, but this book should be read. And I loved it so much because of how personal it felt. Totally worth it.
