Find out what really happened when a strange man hijacked an airplane in 1971 and then parachuted out of it, never to be seen again. What is the truth behind the mystery of the man who came to be known as D. B. Cooper?
On November 24, 1971, an unidentified man hijacked an airplane that was flying from Portland, Oregon, to Seattle, Washington. He demanded $200,000 and told a flight attendant that he had weapons. After stopping in Seattle, the hijacker was given the money and he released the attendants. But he demanded that the pilots stay on-board, refuel, and fly him to Mexico City. Just thirty minutes after the plane took off, the man jumped out of the aircraft and parachuted away...never to be seen or heard from again. Did he escape with the money? Did he even survive the jump? Over fifty years later, the FBI still does not know what happened to the man they call "D. B. Cooper." Find out what we do know about one of America's most famous, unsolved mysteries in this book for young readers.
Somehow, I’d never learned about this mysterious account until I listened to this audiobook today in the car. It was fascinating and an overall thorough account of the “Mystery of D.B. Cooper.” Is it scary and intense? Yes. Is it appropriate for a younger audience? I’m not sure. I think that as it’s a true story, it might scare kids or change their perception of flying. It is important in that it explains why more airport/ flight rules were created after this. TSA didn’t get super strict until years later due to the more recent incident of 9/11. This is a tie-in in this story due to both relating to security measures, or a lack of them. I’m glad that this kind of thing, known as “air piracy,” doesn’t happen in modern-day flights. What’s also crazy is that people respected D.B. Cooper for doing what he did because it was “well planned out” and he “got away with it.” It’s sad that there are people who respect this crime, or any crime, for that matter.

The mystery of DB Cooper is so fascinating, so I am glad that WhoHQ decided to do a book covering it. Like the other books in the series, it does a good job at providing a first look at a topic, written in a way that young readers can fully comprehend. It is by no means exhaustive, and leaves a lot out, but it's enough to cover the basics.
My kids love learning about this mystery. Elliot really enjoyed this book and wanted me to read it. I didn’t really know anything about the crime besides what my kids have told me. It’s quite something.
