Stuffed: Not Your Mama's Toy Story

Rate this book
When my father said my mother was gone, I thought he could only mean one thing.

I was left with only a note in her handwriting and a stack of stuffed animals. There was no funeral. There were no goodbyes. There was only that letter, and my new friends.

Sent by my mother from the depths of Hell, each toy possessed its own demon with different oaths, abilities, and personalities. We became friends and soon learned we only had each other.

Until they were gone, too.

Then I truly had nothing.

The moment I was out from under the watchful eye of my aunt, I set out to find my friends. But it turns out we all had a lot to learn about life, love, and what happens when your mother binds your soul to four young demons that mature into dangerously irresistible shifters.

Stuffed at Nattie Rhodes
This book was so sad...
I shed quite a few tears at the beginning of this book.
That's why I definitely thought it was worth 5 stars alone.
Of course the story surrounding it was also really well put together.
Would definitely recommend it, it's definitely not your normal mommy toys read 😜

Stuffed: Not Your Mama's Toy Story - aka, My Mama Didn't Like Cliffhangers Either!

While not actually listed anywhere as part of the Stuff Your Kindle event, I snagged this up for free because, well, I love stuffed animals https://www.reddit.com/r/RomanceBooks.... Maybe I'm a closet Little. I don't know, but that's a huge digression.

On the surface, this novella has everything a girl like me could want. Slow burn friends to lovers, demon shifters, touch her and die, stuffies. But what you can't tell from the surface is that IT'S PART ONE OF AN ONGOING KINDLE VELLA SERIES! And what's worse, you don't find out until after you've finished all 80 pages. And it gets even worse. After 80 pages, they're still in the friend stage. Cue the (sexually) frustrated weeping.

Stuffed is a supernatural tale about a young girl in a bad situation. Her beloved mother just up and disappeared one day, leaving behind four stuffies bequeathed to her daughter, Dalyce. The origin of this name has not yet been explained, but the author hints that it is forthcoming. My guess is she was conceived in Dallas. Wait. That's from a completely different book https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/sho.... Apologies.

So, Dalyce comes home one day and immediately senses something is wrong as her father is not only home early, but also sobbing at the kitchen table. Her doting mother is "gone" and she is left to live with her questionable father. But we know Mom isn't dead because she very purposefully left those stuffies behind. The grief affects them both but Daddy starts to drink and, well, we all know where this goes from here. He becomes angrier and angrier having to reluctantly raise a girl alone. The only time he provides for Dalyce is when he happens to be picking up beer, and in that case, he'll bring home a gas station sandwich (probably an expired one from the trash out back), tossing it to her like the Christmas beef in Scrooged. (What's that? You've never seen the movie Scrooged? I feel very, very sorry for you.)

But all is not lost. Our four little friends are "not human" shifters and are there to protect, console and befriend her. There's a lamb, meant for her to hug, a bear, meant for when she needs to be hugged and a wolf and cat. The latter two are, apparently, waiting to shift until they are needed. And I'm sure we all know where this is going as well given the darkness of the story up to this point.

One night, after puberty hits, Daddy starts to get "lonely" at night, coming into "cuddle" with Dalyce. And, of course, cuddling one night leads to groping another night and the wolf? Not having it. After all the dust has settled, Dalyce's shoulder is dislocated, Daddy has some nice, new scars and she is now pawned off onto Auntie who is an at home sex worker.

Is this your Mama's Toy Story? No m'am.

Dalyce spends eight years with Agony Aunt, learning to get drunk, getting what she wants with her feminine wiles, and finishing high school. Auntie is too happy to pack her off to college, paying for the room and board (gee, I wonder why) and giving sexual favors for Dalyce's admission. Felicity Huffman ain't got nothin' on Auntie.

But first, she needs to get her stuffies back.

–Record scratch–

Wait. What? She abandoned them for eight fucking years? Her supernatural, sentient friends, who valiantly saved her from incestual rape? –facepalm–

So, she texts Daddy…for the first time in 8 years…and asks for her stuff. He says he gave it all to the thrift store five years ago. See? This is a little unbelievable and a LOT anger inducing. Had you just tried to get them back right away, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED!!

Cue a long and boring search for said friends, ending in a visit to Daddy's house for…Reasons…and also ending in Daddy's death by wolf bite. Turns out they were hiding out in Daddy's closet the whole time. What? This is…confusing at best. Convoluted. Dumb.

It is at this point that I looked down at the corner of my app and noticed I'm at 81%…um…did I just pick up a standard paranormal fiction book by mistake? Where's my romance? Where's my spice? These damn stuffies don't even know what sex is! I AM NOT AMUSED!

In the last few pages, she orders delivery for the crew and almost gets kidnapped while retrieving it. We meet the cat for the first time. As the wolf, bear and cat viciously attack the dude, the real delivery guy pulls up and she nonchalantly takes her food, probably willing the guy to not see the carnage two cars over. They kill the kidnapper, stuff him into his own back seat and we get one little flirty scene with our new cat friend and…fade to black.

So, there you have it. A (not so) concise summary of this book…snippet. Will I continue to follow it? Plot wise, it's a fantastic concept. Totally up my alley. Even with the attempted SA and violence and child abuse/neglect. But the writing? No. I have great respect for people who put themselves out there, publishing a book that they loved writing. But maybe our new indie authors need to hone their skills a bit before throwing their hat into the ring. The prose is amateurish with poorly constructed sentences that trip up the reader. While the least excusable part is the unexpected abrupt end on a cliffhanger, the second least excusable is that while this was written, a thesaurus walked into the home office, assaulted the author and indiscriminately vomited all over the keyboard.

And in conclusion, my collection of passages I found especially poorly constructed or exceptionally funny.

"I pushed myself off my bed, my pillow and blankets damp with my pain."

I bet that smells awful.

"She never went in my closest."

My closest what?

"I leaned down and nuzzled my head against his before I placed a soft kiss on the top of his forward."

There's a football team all of a sudden? And why the hell is she kissing some strange athlete?

"Only the sounds of smacking lips and lettuce slurping filled the air."

After this description of Lamb eating lettuce, I must slap the thesaurus. Get it together, man!

“Dad, please,” I whined. “Please don’t do this. Don’t send me away.”

Um…why not? After trying to rape you, you still want to live there and not with your rich Auntie? Are you nuts?!

“I just need to know how many pairs of underwear to bring. She would be so mad if I showed up in dirty unders.”

This actually worked well. I can see this poor kid, losing her mom and determined to find her, but still worried about these mundane things.

“I can’t take care of you. You’re a woman now, and I don’t want to raise a whore.” “What?” I whimpered. “I’m not-" “I saw the way you looked at me. The way you wanted it, you fucking slut! I’m your father, for Christ’s sake!”

The most realistic part of the whole book. I still can't believe any other would leave her child with this actual monster.

The award for funniest line goes to: “What’s got your panties up your cootie crack? You’ve been acting like a yeast infection since Thursday night." Auntie don't mince words.

The award for most frustrating passage goes to: As he stood, he approached me and brought his finger to my chin. His voice was deep, nearly growling when he finally spoke to me. “I swear to fucking God, if you call me Fe, I will pin you down and dig my claws into you until you beg me to stop.” If I had input, this would be the next line: "I was sort of hoping you'd bury something else into me. I promise to beg."

Very short and ended abruptly. I liked the idea, the stuffed toy shifters and how protective they were. The roommates seem like they're going to get offed. I didn't get why she'd go back to even see her father knowing what he'd almost done to her. I'm not sure what was worse, the bedroom reunion or if she had gotten a lift. Add in the random kidnapper, the body count is piling up. I'm curious what happens but this was chaos.

Part one of Dalyce story

This was a unique take on shifters. I’m guessing this is short since it really is a Vella installments. This was a good story. Demon/shifters. There is a lot of holes though things that are yet not explained or that are vague and you just are suppose to know.

The bear, the lamb, the wolf and the cat. 3 males and 1 female. Looking forward to finding out what the cats name is and where they go from here now that she is older and she has them all back.

Toy story like you've never seen it before.

Dalyce lost her mum when she was just a child. But her mum left her 4 stuffed animals to watch over and protect her.

Dalyce realises these toys are no ordinary stuffed animals. They are shifters who will change form to protect her.

Short and sweet story about childhood trauma and the comfort stuffed toys offer

This book messed with my emotions in all the best and worst ways possible.
From the beginning, the details of the emotion that the lead character felt with everything that she was going through were easily felt through the words written.

When the shifters appeared, I quickly fell in love, and it made me wish that I had some shifter buddies a few years back, my emotions were all over the place when they were separated for a while.

All in all, this was very well written, and well put together. I was able to read it in just a couple of hours so if you are down for quick reads, give this one a shot.

I am desperately and impatiently waiting for the next part to be released!

I absolutely love this take on shifters. As kids, I’m sure most of us had special stuffed animals that we felt protected us when we were scared. Nattie Rhodes has taken that concept one step further and these plushies actually do help protect Daylce when she needs it most.

I felt the emotions of Dalyce when she was taken from them. I was sad and heartbroken every time she looked for them and they weren’t there.

I am super excited to see where we go in part 2 and seeing how this group of shifters grow in the human world and how they might help Dalyce grow further as a young adult.

Genuinely i went into this, not knowing if I was going to like it, the premise is a bit different from my usual so I was interest but it was quite short.

However, damn, this book slaps.
Read it all in one go. Its a bit dark, its intriguing. Grief wasn't written badly (as it so often is).

I feel like had this been longer, I'd have given it 5 stars. The pre age jump, I felt like would of been even better with showing us more relationship with the other characters. However it didn't lack, more just my personal preference. I really want the next installment !!!!

Honestly, I didn’t know what this book was going to entail. I’m glad I gave this author a chance because I’ve never been hit in the feels so fast while reading. This book was short and sweet but didn’t exclude any detailing or emotion from the main character. I cannot wait to read the next one.

This book is about a girl who’s mother has left her and her father at a young age. The main character, Delyce received four special stuffed animals to console her through her grief( a special treat from her mom). She’s attached to them (because what kid wouldn’t?). Through bad times these animals have been there for her in more than one way. The sheer amount of emotion when explaining how empty she felt when they’re separated from her was heartbroken. She suffered in life since her mother left her and it became apparent that these plushies meant the world to her.

If you like dark themes with getting hit in the feels constantly this book is for you. Please check the trigger warnings because your mental health matters!

For starters, I read all genres. I have never read anything like this before. This is completely one hundred percent unique. I love when I find the rare gem in the book world. This is it.

I love how the story starts out from the beginning and moves forward, instead of backtracking. Second, stuffed animals that are actually beings out of this world. I am in love.

Dalyce, (love the name), has been through so much trauma in her life. Yes, it does talk about it and some of it is scenes within the book. Yet, she found her family even when she thought she lost it all.

Please be aware this has TWs. Even though it is a dark story, I'm my opinion it's more of a light gray compared to many out there.

If you are looking for something to get you out of a reading slump, I highly suggest this. If you need something different, read this. If you just want to know more about shifting stuffed animals, you need to read this

Stuffed, written by Nattie Rhodes, is a paranormal story and book 1 of a novella series. This is my first by the author, so I was excited to jump right in.

When I was little, I imagined my stuffed animals as real people, and that they would come alive when I slept, so the idea of this book was right up my alley. The book follows Dalyce, a lonely, neglected girl whose mother up and disappears suddenly, leaving her with her alcoholic father. Dalyce has so many unanswered questions but is surprised to learn that her mother leaves her four stuffed animals to keep her company and protect her. Dalyce, feeling only loss and sadness, soon discovers that her stuffies are not just toys but demon shifters.

I enjoyed the quick nature of the book, but the cliffhanger left me wanting more. I knew what direction the book was going in, because of my naughty noggin, but was disappointed to find that is just a friendship in the first book.

I look forward to the next book!

Dalyce was a happy little girl with a mom and dad. One day, she came home from school to discover her mom was gone for good; it changed her father. He drank heavily, ignored her, and tried something awful before sending her away with his rich sister. Her mother had left behind four stuffed animals for her. A bear, cat, lamb, and wolf. Only they were special!

When they finally revealed they could turn into human shifters, she felt safe and protected until she was given away. Eight years later, she returned to her childhood home looking for her gifts. Her father once again tries to attack her, only this time it will turn out differently. She takes her friends back to her dorm room in college. They will protect her at all costs. What about the special place her mother went to? When will she be ready to go there? What are the big secrets Find more answers when Season 2 comes out!

Part one is great but part two gets even better!! I wrote this review as parts one and two combined. If you’re curious about it, go ahead and read it! They are on the shorter side so I read through them quickly.
I loved everything about this book and will definitely recommend it! It’s an emotional book with some interesting characters, some triggers, and a lot of spice! The only thing I didn’t like was not knowing how to pronounce the main character’s name. Otherwise, I’m eager to read more and hope this story continues!
Small spoilers here!!
Our main character finds herself with 4 unique stuffed animals to comfort her after losing her mom. They’re separated from her and years later as adults are rejoined, leading Dalyce to fully embrace them into her life.

Make sure u read TWs before u read this novella.

Dalyce found her dad cryin, and he told her mom was gone and never comin back. All her mom left was a note, and 4 stuffed animals were demon/shifters a bear, a lamb, a wolf, and a cat. 3 males and 1 female. Dalyce wants to find her mom, and the demon/shifters know where she is and can't take her til she is old enough. The stuffed animals are there to protect Dalyce. After an attack from her dad, he made her move in with her Aunt Nessa, and she couldn't grab her stuffed animals. 8 yrs later, she tried gettin her stuffed animals back. After they reunite, they go on to college. This novella is good and ends on a cliffhanger. I can't wait to read the 2nd novella to this.

Stuffed: Not Your Mama's Toy Story is a quick novella read, part one of what is sure to be a fabulous story!
I have to admit I was not completely sure about this when I sat down to read it, the idea of stuffed animal shifters was definitely a new, yet intriguing concept for me. In this very short introduction to the story, I have already fallen in love with it all. The plot is well written, having pulled me into the story from page one and holding my attention to the very end. Since this is the first part of the story, I felt like the characters did not have quite enough time for me to fall in love with them, but I definitely am excited for a second date with them!

This book was freaking WEIRD. But I liked it. Like the story was SO random but it was actually really, really good. It was also only like 84 pages, so I literally read it within an hour. I also didn’t realize that this book came out September 6th, and it ended on a cliffhanger… it looks like I won’t be finding out what happens for a while.

Again this book was really weird, but the main plot point isn’t like ANYTHING that I have ever read, seen, or heard about before. I want to know everything that happened and I want to see the relationships grow.

I have to be honest, I can’t believe that I am rating this book 4 stars, but it honestly feels right.

When teddy bears kill. I loved it so much it was short and sweet I do wish is was longer.

The story starts out sad it really don’t get any happier. Dalyce definitely don’t have a good life. She comes home to fine her mom is “gone” but she left her 4 demon teddy bears.

She lose her best friends her teddy bears due to an ahole dad, Lucky 8 years later she has them back and they have her back.

The bear Arc, the lamb Ovi , the wolf Lu and the cat we have yet to learn his name. A bear from protection and bear hugs of course. A lamb for comfort and cuddles, a wolf to keep you safe and a cat cause who don’t love a cat.

Confusing

I found this book confusing and by the end, I felt a bit cheated. Nothing in the blurb or anywhere did it indicate it was going to be part of a series and the way it ended made little sense. I was left confused and jarred after that cliffhanger.

I think the premise was good and intriguing but the end result was not for me. Too many things got left unresolved and since I live where I can’t get Kindle Vella, the possibility of me getting to read the “second season” is quite small.

Really good read!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a short read about a girl who was gifted stuffed animals by her mother before she disappeared. They became her best friend's until she was forced to move out with her aunt without them. Now she’s trying to find them again. I'm used to steamy stories, this was not one, but I kept reading because I wanted to find out what was going to happen. It was sad, adventurous, and a little funny. I have a feeling it will get steamy soon. Can't wait for the next one!

Stuffed by Nattie Rhodes is a paranormal love (not quite romance yet) novella. This little novella is amazing and very original. I fell in love with Dalyce and my heart broke for her. Nattie Rhodes weaved such an intriguing tale full of sorrow, loss, protectiveness, and love. She was sent four amazing stuffed/shifters to protect her as she grew up.
You can tell so much was put into one little novella. This is not the end though we have at least two more parts and I can not wait!

Oh mylanta! These aren’t your typical cuddly stuffed animals. They weren’t saying cute and catchy phrases when you pulled a string, that’s for sure. I went in blind after a friend recommended this to me and I’m so glad I did! I really enjoyed everything this story had to offer! The story line was allll the way there. Such a greatly written story. I will be waiting for the rest. Not patiently, but I’ll be waiting.

Until next time,

This is a super short novella that I would love nothing more than to make it into one big fat book. The idea of these demon/shifter beings made into toys to protect Dalyce as a child is super sweet, especially when she goes through terrible abuse at the hands of her own father. I can't wait to see what their relationship turns into in the next installment.

This book is low on spice but it does the heavy lifting when it comes to plot and set up. Had I not had the second book on hand ready to go I think I would have been a bit upset at how abrupt the ending was.

The story is great and all the characters who are introduced are well done and you really get a good look into their base elements.

This story was heartbreaking and adorable. What this poor girl went through after her mother was gone is so sad. Her father gets what he deserves. I love how the stuff animals are actually Shifters. They have such an innocent outlook on life. I can't wait to see how they develop into adults.
