Ruins of Smoke is wild!

I was fortunate to beta-read this novella, and I am so glad I did. I read Seeds of War earlier this year and loved it and was therefore excited to read this prequel novella.

Ruins of Smoke is an incredibly ambitious story. In around 100 pages, Silva is able to craft a story that includes four POVs, colossal fight scenes, emotional and satisfying payoffs, dark magic and horrifying fantasy creatures. YES, you get a fantasy epic in very few pages, which is an impressive feat. I also appreciate that readers can start with Ruins of Smoke if they want to get into this series! It is a perfect appetiser! My only minor criticism is that the four POVs are a tad bit much for such a novella, which may lead to a slightly disjointed reading experience for some. Nonetheless, I didn’t find this to be a significant issue.

Overall, Ruins of Smoke is a relentless, mesmerising prequel novella that brilliantly sets the stage for this epic fantasy series. I can’t wait for book 2!

This novella was, in a sense, quite disappointing to me. It’s a prequel novella that covers events that happened before book one in the series, but you pretty much need to read book one before the prequel novella to get an idea of what's going on.

It sounds very harsh to say it was a bit disappointing, but I genuinely think that the best experience would be to read this after the first book in the series – so in publication rather than chronological order.

If you've read the novella the Fall, by Ryan Cahill, it's very similar to this book in the way it’s structured. There are eight chapters, two chapters each for four different characters – one ‘bad’ and three ‘good’.

You have a big battle and it's chaos absolutely everywhere, with you being thrown right in the middle of it. You literally start off in the deep end but then you realize there's no shallow end to go to anyway. I thought in here we had eight really high intensity, pretty good chapters, that were really showing me a lot of things about this world, a lot of powers, a lot of what will become the history of this series, and I thought it was a really good ending to a book.

The problem I had here, was I didn't have the book that led up to it. I missed all of the buildup, the introduction to the characters, the world, what these powers are… Because I’ve not yet read book one, I just had no idea what was going on and what all of these things were and what the people could do.

I was quite conflicted, then, because I got to the end of the book still not really knowing what was happening, but at the same time it was quite good and very enjoyable. After speaking to a couple of people who've read both I definitely feel that you would get a lot more out of this if you read Seeds of War before you get to Ruins of Smoke.

This was a great prequel novella to Seeds Of War. I think you can read this before or after Seeds Of War. It doesn't really matter. Just don't skip it!

A fairly easy read as an introduction to this world. Does anyone find that the writer is trying to pack so much action into such a short space of time that you can be a bit confused as a reader?

Still it done enough for me to order seeds of war.

The Ruins of Smoke
(2nd pick)

Quick-ish Pitch:
Whew. Holy smokes. (Pun very much intended.) What an adrenaline rush.

This is an interesting take on “God, save the king” - when god-like characters are fighting with each other and using the MC’s like pawns in their game.

What I liked:
- Very cool magic world building. I love the concept of magical smoke reshaping things and people.
- The different POV’s lead to an interesting tension build.

Minor Tiffs:
- The pacing is so fast - like pump the breaks a little bit, because it’s harder to enjoy and connect with the emotional bits. My guess is pacing feels more even in book 1.
- I had a harder time visualizing some of the magical scenes when it came to the magical rift and the time in between space.

Recommend:
- When you want to rage. 😅
- If you are looking for a taste of an intriguing and promising magic system.

Favorite Line(s)

“He let out a lone tear. The one sign of pain and the weakness he couldn’t hide. Of his humanity. It escaped him like a fleeing prisoner.”

Holy smokes. (Pun very much intended.) What an adrenaline rush.

I devoured this novella in one sitting.

Ruins of Smoke is a prequel novella to Seeds of War, book 1 in the Smokesmiths series.

The novella takes place during a final battle that will influence future events. Told from four very different perspectives it is a blistering story that perfectly sets up the historic events in book 1 and the series to follow,

The author brilliantly tells the story of a significant historic event in his world, through a relentlessly brutal battle filled with mesmerising magic.

He drops you straight into the action that does not cease until the very satisfying conclusion.

The magic of the Smokesmiths is something that I found truly unique and intriguing from the novel. The author throws more magical elements at us here, with Smoke Riders, Sentinels, and more dark beasts.

This was a breathless read. I didn't want it to end. Having already read Seeds of War before the novella, I would recommend reading Ruins of Smoke after the novel to get the greatest impact from the story. However, it will work just as well if read before SoW and will whet your appetite for the series.

One thing is for certain, Ruins of Smoke is a brilliant example of less being more, and a great way to experience this intriguing world. The novella has increased my excitement for the next book in the Smokesmiths series.

Ruins of Smoke is the prequel novella to Seeds of War and takes place several thousands of years before the first book in The Smokesmiths series.
It’s filled with complex characters, exhilarating action scenes, imaginative yet terrifying creatures, inventive smoke smith magic, and a whole lot of emotional gut punches. Simply said, this is a novella done right!

Through the eyes of four very different yet equally compelling characters, we experience an epic final battle that will change the course of history in the Known World. A sentinel of the Red Sun Army, a troubled imperial general, a young Smoke Rider, and a king bonded to the divine; the fate of the Known World lies in their hands, and they will stop at nothing to fight for what they believe in.

Once again, and maybe even more so than in Seeds of War, Silva’s wild imagination and masterful storytelling skills are on full display here. We get to see a lot more of the incredibly cool and cinematic smokesmith magic, encounter more horrific creatures, and dive much deeper into the intriguing lore of this world.

And for a novella that is so fast-paced and action-packed from start to finish, it’s truly astounding how well developed these characters turned out to be. They are all so complex and have incredible emotional depth, which means that all the emotional beats hit way harder than you could ever have expected.
Though, what I maybe appreciated most of all is how they are all fighting two battles; the literal one against the creatures unleashed by the Deceiver, and the one inside their own minds.

Within just a couple of pages, Silva manages to tell an unforgettable story of bonds, family, strength, resilience, and sacrifice. This story deeply explores the dangerously thin line between good and evil, between strength and weakness, and between love and hate.
The stakes are sky-high, the action sequences are thrilling, the displays of magic are mesmerising, the easter eggs are incredibly exciting, and all the crazy twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat (or nervously pacing through the room, in my case.)

Now, I personally read Seeds of War before diving into this prequel novella, but it honestly does not matter where you start. If you want to see a lot of the unique magic system on display and like the idea of a more fast-paced and action-packed introduction to this world, then I’d recommend starting with this novella. But if you are totally here for the slow-burn and character-driven approach, then I’d check out Seeds of War first. No matter what route you decide to go, I am certain that Silva will immediately manage to capture your imagination and leave you hungering for more in the best way possible.

Ruins of Smoke is one of the best prequel novellas that I have ever read and it has me incredibly excited to explore this world further in the future.
You can grab this novella for free by signing up to the author’s newsletter, but I also highly recommend getting the paperback to drool over the gorgeous cover and to admire the illustrations in the bestiary. Either way, just do yourself a favour and pick up this dark and inventive fantasy series if you haven’t done so already. I am calling it now, Silva is going to be an author to watch!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I received this novella to judge as an SFINCS finalist. Opinion is my own, and does not represent that made by the team. I did also happen to purchase this in paperback, as I prefer to read physical, and I liked the cover a lot.

To me, this hit very similarly to Ryan Cahill’s The Fall. From the jump there is tension, action, emotion. The author sets up a battle that is already not going well, therefore the reader knows the stakes are high, and that there’s bound to be a near bottomless fall. There are multiple POVs and the author manages to make the reader care individually for all of them in the very short time you spend with each.

The Essence and the Deceiver are locked in an endless battle. Their chosen avatars destined to duke it out for eternity. This selection, and the transference of powers felt very similar to Marvel’s Moon Knight to me. They are imbued with power, can speak to their masters, become ageless, and live to serve. Too bad they also happen to be brothers.

In just 100 pages, the author makes you care for the characters, the world, the crumbling city, and feel each loss as they pile high. It’s well written, fast paced, and certainly an enticing sampler of what’s to come in the series itself. I’m intrigued by his different demonic creatures, as well as the different fighters the king has at his beck and call. Particularly the battle sisters and Smoke Riders.

Please check this one out!

Ruins of Smoke is a prequel novella to the Smokesmiths series, an epic fantasy proposal written by João F. Silva. Set thousands of years prior to the initial novel, we have a really ambitious book which depicts the battle for Ushar, the capital of the Usharian Empire, which is trying to resist the attack of a new Deceiver's avatar.

Weaving together multiple POV, we become spectators of how the city is about to fall against the Deceiver's forces, with several forces working together to protect the king and the Essence, that energy that allowed the Empire to reach their status in the world. However, this time the Deceiver's avatar is somebody known to the king; Agor is trying to make all aware of what he thinks is the truth about the Essence, but in reality, it isn't more than a pawn in the hands of the Deceiver.

In some ways, Silva expands the world of his series, giving us more ways the smoke can be used to gain powers, and introducing us to the Essence in more detail; all while telling us the story of those individuals that are fighting for Ushar, with a wide range of emotions, from the fanaticism of the sisters, to the cowardice that sometimes can be found in Matala.

It works well as a standalone, but it is true that it might be better enjoyed after reading Seeds of War (but in no way is necessary). Silva exhibits a great competence writing, taking advantage of the situation to create memorable scenes, and using several POVs to create a bigger picture of the battle.

If you like epic fantasy, this novella is an excellent pick if you are in the mood for a shorter story that will let you craving for more of the Smokesmiths. A great way to be introduced to Silva's works.

Ruins of Smoke

Hers a story on Good and Evil…..

Matala is a Smokerider (I couldn’t get the smoke creature from the tv series LOST out of my visual, while I was reading this story!). Oh she on the side of good.

Jeha has The Essence courses through her feeding her mind’s eye.
This battle is like tuning an orchestra!!
The term fiendish creatures are fleas. ( I liked how it’s described in the book)

The love, of family is strong, but the love of winning is stronger these brothers Alamakar and Agor will soon know!

There is lots of lore with this backstory that will bring praises to The Seeds of War!!
Let the battle begin and let the blood bath reign!!
To Victory or Death!!!
Joao really shines in this Novella and he still leaves you wanting more! Excellent wordsman !!

I was given this by Mr. Silva for an honest review, I give this five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!!!

Joao was kind enough to send me the first ARC of this prequel novella, set thousands of years before Seeds of War (one of my favorite books of the year) but that doesn't influence my review

120 pages isn't a lot of page time for four POV characters, while maintaining emotional relationships with each, but Silva managed to do so pretty flawlessly. Like I said, this takes place thousands of years before the main story, and shows how the world become how it is in present day, gives backround on The Deceiver, and The Essence. This was action packed as all hell, but there were some hard-hitting emotional moments. Family plays a large role in this one, and it was handled with a masterful hand.

I cannot recommend this series highly enough.

"Ruins of Smoke" by João F. Silva is a prequel to another book I recommended in my newsletter last year, "Seeds of War."

This novella may be short, but it sure packs a punch! You'll be transported into an epic final battle between gods and their avatars in just a few hours. It's like diving straight into the climax of a massive thousand-page fantasy novel.

Picture this: flying warriors resembling valkyries, massive beasts spewing fire, and gods locked in an ultimate showdown. That's "Ruins of Smoke" in a nutshell. This novella immerses you in a world where magic is abundant, gods are directly involved, and everything feels larger than life. It's like stepping into an age of myths and legends, where the gods' power shapes the world's destiny. The scale and imagination behind this story are awe-inspiring, and it wastes no time throwing you into the thick of the action.

This novella manages to juggle four different points of view, and by my estimation, it succeeds with three. First, we have the Valkyrie-like soldier, who showcases an alternative form of magic in this world, the power of the Essence, distinct from the smoke magic introduced in “Seeds of War.” It reminded me of David Gemmell's work—specifically, of the warrior monks in Legend—and added an extra layer of fascination. This was the strongest and most interesting PoV.

Then it jumps into the eyes of the enemy, and this one was delightful and more complex than usual, and it was a pity how soon it was over. I would rather have had the next PoV cut for more time with this one.

Because the Smokesmith's character comes next, and that felt a bit rushed in terms of development. This section is the weakest and felt like someone describing what was happening on-screen in a video game filled with boss fights. There is an attempt at making the character feel some internal conflict and get over it within a few short pages, and again, it feels rushed. It was handled as well as it could have been in a novella, but sometimes, less is more, and the book would have been stronger if the section was cut.

Finally, there is the Sun King, an avatar of the Essence. The best thing about this PoV is that it gives us a bit more insight into the Goddess-like Essence, and that’s very interesting because although the story paints the Essence as good and her brother, the Old God, as evil, there is a firm hint of maliciousness on the part of the essence as well. It does not go full gray zone, but it leaves you wondering if the bad guys might have a point.

Overall, in a book that can be read in under 2 hours, I say that having enjoyed 3 out of 4 PoVs is a win, though!

The writing style is solid and descriptive without being overwhelming. The author knows how to keep things moving swiftly while still painting vivid pictures in your mind. The action scenes burst off the page with energy and excitement. The novella's brevity allows for a fast-paced read that never leaves you bogged down by excessive details.

To wrap things up, "Ruins of Smoke" is a must-read for fantasy fans craving a quick yet thrilling adventure. João F. Silva has crafted a novella that delivers epic battles, intense action, and captivating characters. While some areas could use more development, the overall experience is nothing short of exhilarating.

Here's a burning question: should you read "Seeds of War" before or after "Ruins of Smoke"? In my opinion, reading "Seeds of War" first enhances the overall experience. It provides a deeper understanding of the world and its connections to the events in this novella. Plus, an intriguing mystery in "Seeds of War" could spoil if you read the prequel first. So, grab a copy of both books and start your journey with "Seeds of War" for maximum enjoyment! Seeds is a cheap book (I don’t think I ever saw it selling for more than 99 cents in digital format), so it is a no-brainer.

DISCLAIMER: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. I also consider João a friend but this has not influenced my opinions.

_________

Ruins of Smoke is pure wizardry. Putting four POV characters in a single novella is a tall order, but it works exceptionally here, with plenty of shocking moments, emotional gut-punches, and high excitement to enthrall you right from page one.

The novella is set during a massive battle that sets the stage for the future events of Seeds of War, split across four different perspectives. While two chapters per character might not seem like a lot, it's a testament to Silva's abilities as a writer that each character has incredible depth and well-defined motivations, and each distinct from the one who preceded them. Mighty warriors are contrasted with magic users who can shed their earthly flesh just as deceitful traitors are contrasted with upholders of the truth. Seeds of War already had a fantastic and unique base for its magic and world, and Ruins of Smoke manages to expand on it even further with skeleton warriors, smoke weapons, divine avatars, and eldritch horrors. It's great stuff throughout and an instant page-turner.

This is a book with perfect balance that manages to show so much in such limited space while also not overdoing it. Excellent characters, gripping action, and a wonderfully unique world, all wrapped up in a tight, concise package, make for an un-put-down-able read. It's a fantastic companion to Seeds of War, and a well worthwhile introduction to the world of the Smokesmiths.

So, I have to be honest.
I didn't know this little gem of a novella existed until I subscribed to a certain newsletter.

Before that, I once saw the cover for Seeds Of War in passing, and decided to throw it on the pile of the never ending TBR.

I was very busy reading other books (I usually prioritise sub books first), until a post on IG came to my attention. The book being described as Elden Ring meets The Fall. Well, colour me intrigued because I fucking love the Fall and Elden Ring is a game that also intrigued me, but I'm too shit of a gamer for that.

So what do we do? We subscribe to a newsletter and read this little novella instead.

I jokingly posted a sexualised version on my insta, seen that Mr Silva wanted to lure in the SJM girlies. But what about the men out there? The tough as nails men.. and the tough as nails women. Let us speak to them this time.

So, Ruins Of Smoke is a tasty little snack, with four unique ingredients. Each, completing it as a wholesome, nutrious lunch. However small, it's doesn't quite leave you hungry as a meal. Unless it's for more. In this case, less is not more. More is better.

Having not read the rest of the books yet, I believe this is a pre-history telling. By opening the first page, you are dumped straight into an epic battle between the essence, the Deceiver and all who fight. We are met with sentinels, smokesmiths and two powerful men that are lined up against eachother, where they used to share a bloodline instead.

While the POV's may have been borderline too much for some, and a lot of it is kinda up to you to figure out as you go.. I ended up really enjoying this novella. It's quite literally packed with action, the pov's are flowing nicely into the story at the right moments and it's a promise for the next book. It leaves you wanting.... and that's exactly what a novella like this should do, especially when you're trying to 'seduce' the readers through a newsletter sample.

Well done, sir!

Holy smoke! João F Silva has worked his magic again, this time packing a novel's-worth of action and emotion into a novella.

It's an incredible feat, achieved through relentless combat and awesome magic from start to finish, without sacrificing character personality or emotional impact.

Silva literally unleashes fire and brimstone across the 100-plus pages and the cinematic fight scenes are lava hot.

It's a gripping read but not just because of the high-stakes warfare. Remarkably, despite having four POVs, it's because Silva manages to make you invested in each of them, to care about their feelings and fate, even if you might not root for them all.

With such a small amount of page space dedicated to each viewpoint, Silva makes every word count to get inside their heads and understand their motivations, hopes, fears and flaws.

He achieves this while putting them through hell as they battle the forces pitted against them as well as their own inner demons.

Like Seeds of War, the first novel in The Smokesmiths series, this novella features a fantastical array of terrifying creatures, and it expands on the brilliant world magic, with the use of the Essence and exciting addition of kick-ass smoke riders.

As well as strong characterisation, this prequel has powerful themes, portrayed through the characters’ actions and inner turmoil.

The POVs have to variously dig deep and overcome their doubts or misconceptions to triumph, to show courage in the face of overwhelming adversity, and to stand up and fight for their cause, whether it's through a desire for change or the bonds of duty, comradeship or familial love.

There is bravery and sacrifice, strength and weakness, heroism and betrayal.

There is immense suffering, deception, clashes of titanic power, huge revelation and, underpinning it all, amid all the magic and bloodshed, it oozes raw emotion.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Silva is a wordsmith who's on fire and he deserves to be setting the fantasy fiction world alight with The Smokesmiths.

A fun introduction to a well-liked self published series:)

I decided to read the prequel novella before diving into the main series just to get an idea of the writing style and setting of this world. I'm glad I did. While there may not be anything groundbreaking in this novella, it was nonetheless fun and full of action.

The plot follows several characters during a siege of a large city. We get to see viewpoints from both sides of the conflict which I thought was really cool. We also get a good look at the magic system which seems to be some kind of "smoke magic". I thought this was really intriguing and it kind of reminded me of Mistborn's magic system and easy, accessible writing style.

Overall, I did enjoy this quick read enough to want to try the main installment very soon. I'll rate this 3.75/5 stars:)

Book Review - Ruins of Smoke

Sometimes a book lands in your inbox that immediately makes you throw out your reading plans.

Ruins of Smoke by Joao F Silva was that book for me.

Since reading and I must say loving Seeds of War, I’ve been itching to get back to this world.

Thank you Joao for providing an advance copy for me to read.

Ruins of Smoke is the prequel novella to the Smokesmith series.

Let me start this by saying this book was absolutely fantastic. I had such a fun time reading this book.

So what is the book about?

Well the deceiver is back and with his new avatar will destroy the known world.

Standing in the deceiver way are the Red Sun Army Sentinels, smoke riders and Smokesmiths.

The story start right in the thick of a battle.

Jaha and her Red Sun Sentinels are preparing to enter the battle and add their essence fused powers to the side of good.

The few chapters we had with Jaha and her sisters were awesome. Joao was able to give us new characters, enhanced knowledge of the magic system and of course bloody action.

In truth every pages is pretty much bloody action, and I loved it.

Also on the side of good we meet Matala a smoke rider. A smoke rider has the ability to manipulate smoke to produce deadly weapons.

Matala also have the ability to turn into an undead skeleton by engulfing himself in fire.

These added abilities further enhance the awesome magical elements Joao has given us in this series so far.

The final two POVs are two blood brothers which find themselves on the opposite sides.

First we have Alamakar the most powerful man alive the living avatar of essence, the side of light and life.

Where as we have on the opposite side Agor the avatar of the deceiver. The darkness to the light, the death and bringer of destruction.

Although we have seen brother vs brother in many a story, I think Joao handle this brother vs brother, good vs evil very well. As both side believe they’re working to rid the world of the other evil.

You can feel the brothers still have love for each other but must put aside any family ties to fulfil their master’s duty.

All through this story you will come across many themes of love, family, strength and weakness.

I cannot end this review without mentioning the many new monsters introduced in this book. I will not list them but please check out the bestiary at the front of the book for details and pictures.

This was very helpful especially if you struggle to imagine these beast from the description.

Joao has written a beautiful book which I believe compliments the story told in Seeds of War.

A story of rich history, lore, bloody battle good enough to stand up against any epic fantasy series.

I’m so glad I’ve read this book and eagerly await book two in the Smokesmith series.

The gentleman that is Joao has made this book free upon sign up to his newsletter, if a free book does not peak your interest, the book itself surely will.

I urge you, please check out this book and series.

ARC kindly provided by the author, João F. Silva

I have just received an ARC for Thorns of War and completely forgot about reading this one! Excuse my tardiness, Joáo! 2023 was hell of a year that ended with a heart attack. I'm jacked up with blood thinners now, and I'm ready for The Smokesmiths fast ride!

The story jumps you right into the action and doesn't let you go. A thrilling page-turner that makes for a quick read. I saw a different side of this world. The Deceivers side, and I totally got it. The Esscence side started looking kind of shady. And then the "loop" came, and then I saw there was no good side or evil side. Just different perceptions. Such is life, eh?

Now I'm pumped up to see where Thorns of War is going to take me!

As an extra bonus, I need to read books with dragons for April Dragon Theme month in Epic Fantasy Books Group. I gave an extra peepy squeak when I discovered a dragon in this story.

This novella.. wow. The minute I opened and saw the illustrations, I was invested. You dive straight into a battle with monsters, smoke riders, smoke magic system .. and dowsers.. loved the idea of them!

It’s told from four point of views - a sister of the Red Sun army, a new dowser, a King - the Essence avatar and his brother the Old One’s avatar. I really enjoyed them all, it was brutal and intense .. I had goosebumps in sections. It’s following the good vs evil trope and I’m looking forward to see where it goes.

I’m going straight into Seeds of War!

I would like to thank the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

"Ruins of Smoke" is a prequel novella to Seeds of War, the first book in the Smokesmiths fantasy series and set many years prior to the events in book 1.

This novella was great! It drops the reader directly into a battle scene which gives way to a fast-paced and action-packed story told from four different POVs.

I was very impressed by how the author managed to pack four POVs into this novella and make me care for all of them and even get emotional over what happens to these characters. This novella is ultimately about love, connections and sacrifice, and I very much enjoyed how these themes were conveyed in the story.

Also, this novella offers some insights into part of the magic system of this world, which was great to see!

Overall, I highly enjoyed it and I would highly recommend it, together with the first book in the series.

Wow! Yea...where do I start?! Catch my breath would be first I guess. What a mind boggling, fast and frantic Novella this was! A prequel to Silva's first book in his "Smokesmiths" series, and this was a must have addition!

Yes, a prequel to "Seeds of War" but so glad I read this in published order. It isn't necessary and could certainly be read first, but I feel the gravity of the story being told in "Ruins of Smoke" is hammered home so much more having read "Seeds of War" first. You are definitely comfortable with the magic system being used in this Novella and understand the new variations of this magic on display that weren't in book 1.

The short story here is a one night battle that seamlessly blends into the events of book 1 and shed alot of light on the insane ending in "Seeds" and what we can expect moving forward in this series. The action is immediate from the first paragraph, and has absolutely no let up to the Epilogue! This does negate any necessity for world building here (but Silva still adds great detail to environment building in each chapter and location), character detail however is on full display! We have very little time with each, due to this being a short Novella...but in under 100 pages, Silva has us rooting for each character introduced, yelling when we move to a new one...then immediately invested and rooting for the newly introduced. Back and forth at breakneck speeds we go until we reach our mesmerizing and emotional final battle!

New demons of the Deceiver and new variations to the smoke magic we know and love from the Essence make this feel fresh and familiar at the same time. As stated at the beginning of this review, this is a glimpse into the past we needed to grasp the full picture of the turmoil this world Silva has built for us is in when we read "Seeds of War"! What a read and what a series we look to be in for! 🔥

One of the best Novellas I've read this year, Silva crafts action, emotion, fasinating characters and memorizing battles that leave you gasping for breath, all in under 100 pages! 5⭐ action is what you can expect to get here, buckle up and enjoy the chaos...the smoke will find you! 📚

I haven't read Seeds of War (the first book in the Smokesmiths series) yet and I think I'm even more excited after this novella!

How is it possible, in 130 pages, for the author to build a fantasy world with multiple points of view, with characters well constructed in their ambitions, with a world of horrendous creatures and others with incredible minds.

This novella seems to me to give an incredible introduction and, honestly, to get to know this author's writing (which I loved!). After Ruins of Smoke, I feel like I know a little about the context of the world I'm going to enter in the first book in the series.

I can't wait to re-enter this world by reading Seeds of War!

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Ruins of Smoke is a prequel to Seeds of War and is set a few thousand years before that story started. I am completely new to this world, but the author did a wonderful job of making this prequel accessible to anyone. Even though it is only a novella, there is a lot of worldbuilding and lore shining through the action and João F. Silva manages to squeeze four different main characters / points of view into this story without any of them falling short. It’s quite the feat in my opinion.

The story covers a few hours during a battle in which all four characters partake, each one for a different reason, each with a different background and backstory. Each one even with a different skillset, a different type of magic. The pacing is fast, but not hectic, the writing smooth.

Ruins of Smoke works very well as an appetizer for the series, I will definitely give Seeds of War a try. And soon.

I love this cover and was really excited to give this novella a try. While not everything quite worked for me personally, I’m still happy I gave this a go because I loved the narrative structure of this book. It’s not something I’ve seen much in such short books but it provided this story with a great basis to build on and around. The world-building was very interesting and the magic systems felt unique. My only issue was that I didn’t quite feel the things I think I was supposed to feel. I struggled to really emotionally connect with the story in the way that I really like while reading.

I have been really eager to try something by this author and I’m really glad I did. He’s shown that he’s not scared to try something risky, which I can really appreciate. Lately, I’ve been leaning more towards sci-fi books rather than fantasy because they’re sometimes more out there and give me new things to try, which I’ve enjoyed shaking my TBR with, so I’m glad to see the same happening in some of my fantasy reads as well. I’m really looking forward to trying more works by Silva.
