"You are not made for peace...You are made of star fire and moonlight. You are a storm at sea. You are a force of nature, Lark, not something to sit idle. "

This is a debut fantasy book that is part of duology. It is told in a dual POV of Azrael and Lark. The world building is excellent with a magic system that is interesting. Azrael is personal guard of the king and Lark has a magic that she is learning but struggling to control but it also bound to the king in a way.

The characters are morally grey which I always find fascinating to read because they always have their own motivations and sometimes it can be hard to discern who is right or wrong? What I really enjoyed was watching the story build from the beginning to the end and it has a slow burn that also builds with the story. It's a forbidden relationship, making it even more enticing to read.

I feel Azrael was quite a consistent character. I loved Lark and seeing her really come into herself was such a pleasure to read. Who doesn't love to see the FMC have growth with confidence in themselves and what they can do? Add in found family, a forgotten heir, gods and demons some spice and it makes for a great read.

This is a such a fantastic start to a debut fantasy duology and thank you to the author for the ARC!

What a wonderfully ambitious debut!!

The worldbuilding was definitely the star of the show — probably some of the most extensive I’ve read in a while, which made for a somewhat slow read, but well worth the ride. At times I wasn’t sure where the plot was going, but there was so much depth to the world and the characters that they floated the story along and filled me with anticipation, dread, and, I might even say, angst. And oh boy, was there angst.

The characters definitely grew on me over the course of the book. Even with a dual POV, the MC and FMC were both a bit enigmatic and it took me a while to feel like I really jived with them, which showed some beautiful character development and relationship progression!

All in all, I admittedly struggled to get into this book in a few ways, but by the end I was beyond hooked. Can’t wait for book 2!

Ratings & Reactions

✧ Overall: 4/5 ✧

Between Two Moons is poetic, dark, and incredibly intriguing. I had read fantasies with dark undertones, and this book made me realize I LOVE dark fantasies.

✧ Vibe: 5/5 ✧

The vibes of this book were IMMACULATE. It was violent, chaotic, deep, romantic, and adventurous. There were so many quotes that just HIT DEEP.

“Not all wanted to be fixed, and not all were broken.”

“Azrael missed when he hadn’t been anyone, before he had made a name for himself with his sword, with his ambition. He missed simplicity. He missed not being someone’s pawn.”

“Lark wouldn’t back down. Her day had been long and hard, and she wouldn’t give into his taunts and torment tonight. Her tongue was sharp, and her heart was guarded.”

✧ Writing & Plot: 4/5 ✧

I LOVED the poetic way Cait wrote this story. The beginning of this book IMMEDIATELY pulls you in with the intrigue and action, and the journey continues to take the characters go through hell and back. There were a couple points where I felt that it was a tad repetitive, but I also understand how each part of the story unraveled part of the mystery. The ending will have you SHOOK.

✧ Characters & Romance: 4/5 ✧

I loved our two main characters so much, the internal journeys they face, and the ups and downs of their love. Some of top romance quotes are from their story!!!

“You know me so well.” - “No, I don’t, and that’s the problem. I want to.”

“[Spoiler] cherished knowing her, learning about her, while [spoiler] reveled in it.”

“You would have killed for me, and I would have died for you.”

“He was sinking further and further, too fast to stop himself.”

The side characters are also complex, and definitely will elicit a strong reaction (whether that be the warm fuzzies and laugher from the found family vibes, or hatred and pain from the villains). One of the most BRILLIANTLY complex relationships that Cait wrote about was Lark’s relationship with the King.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am so thankful for the ARC opportunity. I am SO excited for the next book; I can’t wait to continue Lark and Azrael’s journey, have the chance to read Cait’s style of writing again, and of course, learn what comes of the cliff hanger at the end!!!!!!!

Between Two Moons ARC Review:

✨The Nights Bane Book 1
✨Release Date: 11/3/2023

We’re immediately transported into an action packed world with our MMC, Azrael, a talented swordsman who’s life is turned upside down after an ambush leaves him injured. But by some magical miracle or is it a gift from the Greater?— he’s healed & King Melech of Havriel is knocking on the infirmary’s door with an offer Az can’t resist. The opportunity feels too good to be true & Azrael can’t seem to put his finger on what feels odd & out of place, however, he accepts anyway & sets off on his new path. He meets Lark, our witty FMC, who’s keeping a few secrets. From not only him but the entire kingdom which doesn’t rightfully belong to King Melech. Lark finds herself unable to stay away from Azrael, it’s a pull she’s never felt before. Fate spins it’s wheel, threading Lark & Azrael together on a quest that can only go one of two ways: peace or war. Together they have to navigate through the darkness & hope that in the end, it’s worth it.

This book was a journey. HOLY WORLD-BUILDING. I was 100% immersed into a world so vivid & so real I found myself placing my hand over my chest often. From the colors to the smells to the textures to the towns to the fabrics on the characters’ clothes— it was all so well thought out. So beautifully written. I fell in love with Lark & Az, but I also fell in love with the side characters. Each unique & important to the story in one way or another & each with a personality of their own. Between Two Moons is a story about being brave, standing up for what is right & just, & believing in your power & owning it. It’s a story about an intimacy that goes beyond the physical. It’s about BECOMING.

A page turner to say the least & one that I enjoyed so much. Thank you to the author for allowing me into this world & into her mind. Available for preorder now.

ARC Review of Between Two Moons by Cait Ness (@ caitfarlingxo)

“You and my heart speak the same language”

Between Two Moons is the debut novel by Cait Ness. It is the first book in the Night’s Bane Duo logy. When I say I can hardly wait for the second book, I mean it ! This was a joy to read.

Between Two Moons follows the story of two morally grey characters, Azrael and Lark. Azrael, a seasoned soldier is recruited into the king’s guard after experiencing a miracle and Lark, the forgotten princess and rightful heir to the throne, who can use magic.

It was a pleasure to experience the detailed world building in this book. I love a story that has depth to it . Add a magic system ( my fave ) and some spice and you have a great read.

The forbidden relationship of Azrael and Lark has a major slow burn and the ending will leave you breathless wanting for more.

Definitely recommend 4/5 stars . Pre orders available now with a publushing date of November 3rd .

(No spoilers beyond what is in the book's blurb)
✍🏼Synopsis:
This story starts out with our main male character, Azrael, experiencing a miracle. This miracle has him confounded..Was it a God? Was it magic? Either way, King Melech learns of this miracle and immediately seeks Azrael out to join his Tiras, his elite team of protectors. Through his missions underneath the King's command, Azrael gets to know a unique healer named Lark. Lark happens to be the late King Nokeda's daughter and therefore a Princess and Heir to the throne. Her people also happen to have forgotten all about their lost Princess. Lark desperately wants her rightful position on the throne back and she will stop at nothing to get it.

💭 The first half of the book was a bit slow for me get into. I found myself stumbling over some of the sentences and having to read them a few times to figure out what was happening. Not necessarily run on sentences, just ones that my brain wasn't latching onto and understanding immediately. This also is a factor of reading fantasy books with world-building in them so take it as you will.

The second half of the book did pick up for me though and I flew right through it. I loved the fiestiness of the FMC, Lark. I loved the dynamic between Lark and Azrael. I loved that Lark's magic made her a shadow Mommy 😉

Overall, for a debut fantasy novel, this was really enjoyable and I'm excited to see Cait Ness continue growing as an author!

soft 3.75 stars.

For starters i LOVED this book.

Cait Ness has a way of poetically weaving these characters lives together that was so beautiful to see unfold. This book had the BEST first chapter i've read in a long time.

WHAT I WANTED MORE OF:
-more tension between love interests !!
-or maybe more buildup from their transition from their tense first meet to lovers idk.
-more balance between showing vs telling.
-editing down the middle portion just a lil bit.
-more *internal* romantic conflict.

WHAT I LOVED:
-dynamic characters !!
-POWERFUL fmc !!
-forbidden romance. 😩
-a great hook to the start of the story.
-tension between the fmc and mmc.
-the villain being ACTIVELY evil but still morally grey.
-a fantastic understanding of her characters and what MOTIVATES them.
-great story + worldbuilding.
-a good balance of spice + plot.
-book playlist.
-pronunciation guide.
-STUNNING cover art.

This was an INSANE first book by Cait Ness. I have read so many arcs that haven't held up but this book was one of my favorites of 2023. She had this deep understanding of her characters that made the story so juicy and used poetic language that made the story so beautiful.

Lastly, big shoutout to Cait for being one of my closest mutuals on here and she was so understanding when id received my arc copy but couldn't quite get to it in a timely manner.🤧🤍 forever grateful for her !!

Can't wait to get my hands on book two !!!

"You and my heart speak the same language" *squeeeeee*

"Death follows you."
"No, I am death."

There was something so sweet and delicate yet chaotic about this book. Delicate in it's scenery, it's description, Lark. And CHAOTIC IN THAT AZRAEL NEVER GETS A BREAK! Poor dude spends so much time getting stabbed or bleeding oh my days 😂

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. If you're looking for court intrigue, demons and bloody fights, this one's for you.

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

Actual rating: 3.5/5

This story was very interesting and I really enjoyed the character development of both Azrael and Lark. Although we got more Azrael POVs, I really enjoyed Lark's story and her fighting to stay the hidden princess while trying to reclaim her rightful title. Lark definitely trusts too easy, even knowing she is dealing with the villain.

There were SO many side characters and I kind of got confused with them at times, but the ones who were more prominent in the story were well done and I really enjoyed their page time and their friendship with Az/Lark.

Melech was done very well to be the "perfect" king but is really the worst, and I'm hoping in Book Two that more of his story is revealed as there were crumbs strewn throughout the story and while his part of the story felt wrapped up, I still have lots of questions regarding his rise to the throne.

The writing was descriptive and Ness did a really great job at time jumps to keep the story moving along to span a longer period of time instead of forcing everything to be done in a few months; this made the storyline feel more realistic. Chapter One was insane and really set the tone for the story, but I felt like after Chapter One things kind of went into a lull until around the halfway mark.

I got caught up in some of the scenes and found myself re-reading to understand what was happening, but I could see the progression of Ness' writing by the end of the book and can tell Book Two is going to have really great writing growth.

I absolutely love, loved this book! It was so good!! I can’t believe this is a debut novel! Very well written!! This book does end on a cliffhanger but at a good stopping point in the story. It’s a dual POV following Lark and Azrael. Azrael is gifted a second chance. He becomes part of the kings elite personal guards. Lark is the forgotten princess and rightful heir to the thrown. She is known as a healer among the guards. I really liked the description of how she heals with her magic. You get two see both of them grow and become more confident. Melech the king is an interesting character! I would have been a bit curious to see his POV, and this is just a personal curiosity. I have been intrigued on the god Iah throughout this book. Trying to figure him out. I’m really looking forward to book two. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good fantasy book!

This is such a rich, warm, fiery debut fantasy novel and I loved all the ways Cait incorporated some of my absolute favorite tropes. It's a slow burn with multiple POV's, morally grey characters, spice and yearning and pain, and it's all wrapped up in a beautiful found family that feels so inviting I wish I could join them. The characters' determination and protectiveness stole my heart and kept it.

There's magic and miracles and an intricately constructed world with its own language. The care that went into the detailing absolutely shines through in every single chapter and the story sweeps you away.

"You are not made for peace. What does that mean? Lark raised her eyes to the sky.

You are made of star fire and moonlight. You are a storm at sea. You are a force of nature, Lark, not something to sit idle.”

Thank you so much to the author for the free advanced copy of her gorgeous work to review. I feel so lucky to have been given this beautiful story to read before it hits shelves.

A robust and excellent example of combining plot and character into an epic dark fantasy world. I loved the constant ominous feel of this book. It dripped with deception and danger, even during times of contentment and peace. Ness did an amazing job developing a cast of characters that were both relatable and completely their own.

My only complaint is the amount of steamy scenes. I am not opposed to that level of spice at all. But I felt it was used so often, that it annoyed me. Almost as if it was there just to fill in space. I ended up skimming most of it (the later instances) just to get back to the actual story. Less is more and I definitely think, if you took out half of the spicy scenes, it would not have changed the trajectory of the story.

Overall, I am very much looking forward to the next book. I cannot wait to see what skeletons will be revealed for Lark and Azrael. And what dark corners they will find themselves in next.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters were interesting and intriguing and I loved following along their story. There was plenty of different emotions that the story made me feel! I love a vast emotional book, so this was excellent imo. There was a touch of spice in there but not to the point that it was intrusive or veered from the point of the plot. I was extremely excited when I noticed that there would be a second book! I was getting to about 80% and I found myself sweating, hoping that the story would continue into another book! I wasn't ready to finish it 😍 thank you to Cait Ness for allowing me the greatest pleasure of reading the arc copy of Between Two Moons!! Im so excited for this book to launch! 👏👏 Definitely recommend if you're a fantasy reader. I'd recommend to ADULT YA readers as well. The book isn't YA but it has that fun vibe that I usually find in YA books.

This was a great debut! Immediately you are invested in Azrael and his journey. Lark was an amazingly gentle yet fierce female main character and the romance between the two was beautiful. Some aspects of the world building were super unique, like the two moons and not to spoil but what one of those moons actually is. The characters had to be my favorite part of this book. They all felt so alive and fleshed out. The authors ability to bring a setting to life through words was another favorite aspect. Not to mention the detailed and believable action sequences. Overall a good fantasy romance book and I look forward to the sequel!

Cait wrote this story beautifully! It’s dark and a little different than our typical dark fantasies. (Shadow mommy anyone?) I was sucked in right away by the action right off the bat. While there are two character POVs, we follow Azrael first. We learn of the kingdoms and some of the world building through his eyes. And we it all really starts to come together in Larks POV. The character development throughout is immaculate. It’s romantic and soooo chaotic (I’m looking at you Melech) but I really enjoyed this book! The ending had me staring at the last page with my jaw dropped open! I need the next book asappppp.

This is the perfect blend for lovers of fantasy.
The imagery and scenery building is unparalleled.

Looking forward to the continuing of Lark and Azrael’s story.
Can’t wait for more demons, spiciness🔥, and fantasy world-building similar to that of GOT, The Witcher, etc.

So worth the wait! World building? Top tier. I am already so excited for the next one because that cliffhanger is ILLEGAL. I love Iah probably more than I should, he’s such an interesting character. Had to skip over a few spicy scenes but it wasn’t anything too bad. This whole book just scratches an itch in my brain 🥹

"Being broken doesn't mean you're weak. Sometimes being broken makes you dangerous."

Gosh, what a wonderful debut Between Two Moons is. I had the honor of being one of its first betas, a few years back, and it's amazing to see just how much Cait's grown as a writer, and Between Two Moons as a story.

"My crown is not conditional. I am a princess, with or without you."

Between Two Moons reads, to me, like old school fantasy. The world of Havriel is rich, and exciting to dive into, and its characters lush and interesting. I flew through all 397 pages in a matter of days. I lived for Lark and Azrael's chemistry, and can't wait to see what the sequel has in store for them.

thank you so much to the author for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

between two moons follows Azreal, an exceptional swordsman that experiences a miracle…he’s brought back to life from the brink of death. this gains the attention of King Melech. Azreal is brought to court and assigned to the King’s guard. While a part of the guard, he unknowingly meets the lost, and rightful, princess Siena (aka Lark). Lark, our FMC is drawn into Melech’s folds right from the beginning, hiding her in plain sight from her people. She is also the only person to hold magic for the last thousand years making her extremely valuable. Together Azreal and Lark set out to take back her rightful throne.

first off, this is a truly excellent debut novel i am so impressed by cait and her mind. the world building in this is really well done and the pacing of the plot kept me engaged throughout. also the romance.😉 i really loved being in Lark’s head, i thought she was truly a really interesting FMC. BTM has everything you could want in a fantasy romance: long journeys, demons, magic, revenge, only one bed…and so much more! definitely pick this up when it releases nov. 3rd. (also can we take a min to appreciate the cover??? i’m obsessed)

That ending 🥹🥹🥹

I think about Lark and Az on a weekly basis. The tension between them is SO good. Cait has done such a great job building this world and as a reader, you easily fall into rhythm with the daily training and life within the kingdom.

There was such great lore (not giving anything away!!) that made this whole story intriguing and you will not want to put it down.

"Azrael didn't fear death, not after all this time, but he didn't accept it."
"You are a force of nature, Lark, not something to sit idle."
"Taken to heart? he thought, You have taken my heart."

I CANNOT wait for book 2!

Do you ever start a book and think to yourself, damn, I’m going to love this book? Well, that’s how I felt within the first couple of pages of Between Two Moons. From the start, the author draws you into the world with vivid imagery and amazing fight scenes. Not to mention, the characters have a complexity of depth. I loved this book so much and found myself wanting to read it everyday. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed this book. I really felt like a lot of time and love went into making this book, and you can tell. It was very well written and I really felt like I was so engulfed in this whole book. The only thing I wish was that there was some more world building. It is clear that everything in the world has a reason/explanation and was thought out, but it was not explained very well in the book, so I got confused by background/lore.
