Can love bloom again under the heat of the Spanish sun?
Ten years ago, while travelling before starting a cookery apprenticeship, Alice fell head over heels for the food, the sun and the gorgeous Andy Hall…Family tragedy sent her back to London, but now, finally, she’s been given the chance to return. Only to find herself working alongside none other than Andy, the only man to ever break her heart.
The decade apart has changed them both, though he still has his frustratingly good looks—and is Alice imagining it or does the spark that always existed between them still burn just as brightly? Not ready to risk getting hurt again, she focuses on exploring the culinary delights of the city, and begins to remember a life she once dreamed of…
As Alice rediscovers a world of possibilities under the hot Spanish sun, could there be a second chance for Andy and the love they used to share? Perhaps the vibrant flavours of Barcelona might just be the ingredients for everlasting love?
DNF @ 8%. In the year of our lord two thousand and twenty four, in the month of pride, you cannot expect me to tolerate a book where a character is bi and promiscuous and cheats on partners.
Stop making bi characters slutty and infidelious. It's harmful.
It's even more insult to injury this was a Prime First Read for the month of June.
This isn't cute:
"‘Yep,’ she responds cheerfully. ‘She’s too possessive.’
‘You sure about that? You didn’t give her reason to be jealous?’
Charlie smirks. ‘I snogged her cousin, but I didn’t know they were related. He was just a fit bloke in a club who thought I was fit too – what’s a girl supposed to do?’
I wince, but my mouth twitches into a smile. ‘You’re a nightmare.’"
This book was HARD to read. It needed to be put through a few more editors. Also, the “conflict” the two main characters had and how neither of them talked about it drove me nutsss. Anyways I don’t dnf so this took me a month to read and it wasn’t fun. *don’t ask me how I did it, I just did it, and it was hard.* iykyk
This book could have used one more pass form an editor. I don't think the author has met a disabled, obese or queer person in her life from the portrayal of characters in this book. Everyone goes through magical transformations into better self aware people because the main character has gone off on a two month business trip. I pushed through this book because I was curious where this was going to end. The ending is rushed and just wraps up with some ridiculous and impossible events.
3.5 ⭐️'s. cute summer read, although the whole plot was miscommunication and could've been summed up with one conversation. the 2 main characters ran from all their problems to the point where the male main character actually RAN away when she told him she loved him. I'm sorry but if I was her, I would cry for weeks
The characters are disgustingly unlikeable. Why is everyone impossible at communicating with each other? How do you forget that you DIDN’T drink drive?
Baffling. Poorly thought out. Utter tripe. Wished I DNF’d but I’m too stubborn.
amazon first reads on prime cool: all the food and the catalan language stuff interesting: all the flashback scenes were one person's perspective, all of the now scenes were the other person's perspective the communication breakdowns were a tough hang and i was hoping for more growth
there was no chemistry between the main characters, the writing and storyline was very choppy, and pretty much all of the characters were underwritten and unlikable. there was such a good premise there but it didn’t reach its potential. at all. by any means. big yikes.
A book about food, family and first love that is equally tender and moving and a lovely second chance romance told through flashbacks of their first summer meeting abroad and their reunion ten years later in present day Barcelona.
I loved this story about a dutiful English daughter with a demanding obese, single mother who has given up her dreams to live at home and who finally takes a chance on what she wants, returning to Barcelona and her life goal of being a restaurant chef even though it means reuniting with the now married man who stole her heart all those years ago.
Perfect for fans of People we meet on vacation by Emily Henry and anyone who enjoys a good starting over in midlife story! Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!!
The characters and changing narratives and flashbacks made this a page-turner. I was annoyed when the story switched to the future or the past, but was sucked into whichever time before I could turn the page to skip it. I know nothing of Barcelona and the imagery was magical. I’m a big fan of Ted Lasso, so Richmond being the other place was delightful. This would make a good beach read. 4 stars only because I reserve 5 for books that will live with me forever.
Falling in love over food prep in glorious Barcelona? I’ll take it! You can almost taste the decadently described recipes and feel the sweet sizzle of nostalgia through the flashback scenes. A summer hit!
I read this as part of a summer romance reading challenge. Tbh I am rating this pretty harshly because the amount of miscommunication in this book is extreme, to the point where I just wanted to scream at the characters for being complete idiots. They took that trope and made it into the entire novel. In addition the main female character's mother is so goddamn insufferable, if it was my Mom we would be no contact.
The Good: The descriptions of Barcelona felt so alive! It made me interested in traveling there. I also loved learning more about Catalan culture. I could tell the author was very passionate about it.
The Not-So-Good: The characters were boring, I’m sorry. I didn’t care about them or their relationship. I cared more about his ambitious ex. This felt like a long story your friend tells you about people you don’t know, and you keep waiting for them to get to the point but there isn’t one.
What a sweet story. It made my heart swell. Of course, being set in Barcelona, I was hooked from the start! Loved the reference to culture and cuisine. Another great Kindle First read!
Perfect palate cleanser as I left for vacation. Barcelona, food, and romance- what more could you ask for. This book won’t change your life, but it’s good for what it was. Very enjoyable.
A sweet story that has you wishing for a little more development. Interesting premise but some over the top themes/tropes that border on being offensive. Book definitely needed another few passes during the editing stage but overall an okay read.
I liked the characters Alice and Andy. I loved the setting. I'm ready to go to Barcelona. My only complaint is that the plot could have moved a little faster. But if you're looking for a pool read you will like this one.
Cute story set 10 years ago told from Andy’s POV and current day told by Alice’s about love and loss and regret. Nice feel good ending even if predictable.
Took a long time to finish as I could never get super invested in the characters. Nothing to really draw you into their lives and story, and it gets frustrating to read about constant communication issues. None of the characters had depth. Probably should’ve been a DNF, but I was hoping it would get better.
This book has no business being this long, I think a lot of things could have been cut out so it was a more concise and enjoyable story.
I found the characters to be so surface level, even their “complex traumas” were dull and predictable. The representation of characters and sexuality in this book are horrendously built from stereotypical tropes.
The bi/pansexual character is promiscuous and flippant about cheating.
The Catalonia woman is cold, greedy and a “man stealer”.
The disabled character is needy, unwilling to do things on her own not because she can’t but because she won’t. Then at the end she’s suddenly so much better, all because she lost some weight and got her man back.
That’s just naming a few that come to mind.
I should have DNF’d but I was just hoping the story got better.
