There is only one sport, outside of actual combat disciplines, where two participants can square off in old fashioned, bare-knuckle pugilism without facing swift ejection. Hockey has long held a place for two willing combatants, and it has been said that “no one goes for popcorn during a fight.”
Fans know what to expect on the ice from players with nicknames like Knuckles, The Grim Reaper, The Bruise Brothers, or The Hammer. Yet off the ice, the men who step into these brutish roles are often the kindest, gentlest and most popular players on a team--not to mention some of the best storytellers to ever lace up skates.
Tough Guys honors the experiences of these NHL enforcers throughout history. Author and longtime broadcaster Dale Arnold profiles fighters across eras, sharing their journeys, struggles, and moments of glory.
Amazing take on how the enforcers of the game took on a role that was hurting their own body, only to protect and help their team win. They accepted the consequences of their actions with honor and pride. All the while they live by an unknown written code of fighting. Outstanding!
Very blessed to be one of 13 pro hockey fighters featured in this awesome book by Dale Arnold. While we were the toughest on the ice, this book captures the human side of each of us who chucked knuckles for a living. A great read for any hockey or sports fan to get a glimpse into the lives of pro athletes who were willing to do anything for their team and anything to play in the NHL. Thanks Dale for sharing my story in your book!
