Woke fiction - Comment l'idéologie change nos films et nos séries

Rate this book

A bold and sharp essay about the current debates around the idea of “wokeism.” It’s clear that Samuel Fitoussi has strong opinions about the way progressive movements are evolving, and he’s not afraid to challenge the reader. While I didn’t agree with all of his arguments, I appreciated how he raised questions that are definitely worth thinking about.

The essay paints a picture of the “woke” movement as something that can become extreme or lose focus. I agree with the idea that it’s a fairly new phenomenon and that we don’t even have a clear definition of what being “woke” really means, or who gets to decide. I also relate to the concern that, in some ways, we’re moving away from shared values and structures that have held society together. Change can be good, but when it comes too fast or without clarity, it can feel destabilizing.

On the other side, it’s a real, critical essay that looks at how the concept of “wokeness” has affected movies, TV shows, and pop culture. Samuel Fitoussi argues that we’ve reached a point where art is no longer judged by its quality, but by how well it fits certain moral or political standards. He talks about how many beloved shows are now criticized, even banned, and how their creators are often pressured to apologize for content that was never meant to offend, but simply reflected a different time. I believe people should be free to dislike or avoid certain works, but maybe art isn’t supposed to be perfect, but to spark emotion, reflection, even discomfort sometimes.

Political correctness, in its original form, had a good purpose: to help create space for more voices and reduce harm. But like anything, when taken too far, it can backfire. Today, I think it sometimes becomes more about appearances than real change. We perform the right words, cancel the wrong jokes, but the deeper problems still remain.

That said, I didn’t find all of Fitoussi’s points entirely convincing. There’s a clear frustration behind the writing. Still, I get where he’s coming from: in a society driven by capitalism and online performance, even progressive ideas can start to feel superficial or performative. I did appreciate the core message: we need to protect the space for art to be free, even when it challenges, offends, or confuses us.

I wouldn’t say I walked away fully agreeing with him, but I did walk away thinking. And maybe that’s the real value of this essay.

Excellent bouquin!
