There is excitement in the air as the travelling theatre arrives in Seal Bay. When The Spriggan Travelling Theatre Company arrives in Seal Bay to perform a Cornish version of King Arthur the locals flock to be entertained. But for Morwenna Mutton, sexagenarian librarian, wild swimming enthusiast and amateur sleuth, the theatre brings intrigue too. Actor and director Daniel Kitto is not the most popular member of the cast and unbeknownst to him, his role of Uther Pendragon on the opening night is to be his swansong.

In front of a horrified audience, he collapses during the dying moments of the performance in a pool of fake blood, and although the police are content that the causes of his death are natural, Morwenna isn’t so sure. And once it becomes clear that there are a number of people who stand to gain from Daniel’s death, Morwenna’s investigation takes a dangerous turn.

This is the 2nd book in this series. I have long been a Judy Leigh fan of her women's fiction and am now a fan of her cozy mysteries.
Bloodshed on the boards, has lots of twists and turns as well as red herrings. Its a very well done mystery. I love Moweena, the main character as well as the returning people from her first Seal Bay books. I recently learned there is a 3rd book in the series....can't wait!

Bloodshed on the Boards is a community-led cosy mystery with its very own "Miss Marple" sleuth in Morwenna Mutton. Morwenna likes to tackle mysteries in her own way, by asking questions and following up leads while seeming to be perfectly innocently curious.
Set in Cornwall, with the added attraction of a wild swimming club where members talk "freely" about what's happening in their lives and their village. It's prime puzzle-solving ground for Morwenna in this book as she interacts not only with her friends but also others connected in some way to the travelling theatre group - whose director/owner has just been killed - and the murder itself.
Very much family-oriented, the story thrives on the interactions of Morwenna and her family and friends and their shared activities support the mystery plot well while also adding some fun red herrings to the mix.
It's an entertaining, enjoyable and easy read. A good whodunnit with more than its fair share of humour, community spirit, joie de vivre and good, old-fashioned fun. A series I could happily explore further.

Morwenna and her bicycle are back! And she has a chicken purse (complete with red coxcomb) for dressy occasions! She is SO like my sister Zelda in rural Wisconsin.
Yes. Morwenna. She, her mother, daughter, and granddaughter are immersed in investigating the sudden death of a charming rascal who owns the visiting troupe of players. He was 82, unpleasant to his employees, and did NOT die of a heart attack on stage. But the sleuthing brings threats and more. A great, fun, fascinating cozy mystery set in the homeland of King Arthur.
I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Boldwood Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

The Seal Bay community have their very own amateur sleuth, the slightly eccentric Morwenna Mutton. When a travelling theatre group comes to the village and the group’s owner and director dies on stage, Morwenna suspects foul play. As she delves in to the backgrounds of the actors in the group, the list of suspects grows.

This second book in the Morwenna Mutton series is an easy to read cosy mystery and filled with a number of very likeable characters.

Bloodshed on the Boards is a cozy mystery by Judy Leigh and it is second in a series featuring amateur sleuth Morwenna Mutton.
I haven't read the first book, and I think that was a disadvantage when reading this one. Events in the first book were frequently alluded to while not directly explained in this book. I thought the mystery in this one was good, plenty of different strands going on and a bit reminiscent of a Miss Marple type tale. I do however feel that Morwenna's electric bike features very heavily to the extent that it's a main character - at times it seems like a sales pitch! The glossary of Cornish phrases at the start was a nice touch. Overall I would recommend this book, but maybe read the series in order for optimum enjoyment.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the review copy.

One Liner: A nice read

The Spriggan Travelling Theatre Company arrived in Seal Bay and is all set to perform the Cornish version of King Arthur. Morwenna and the townsfolk are excited.

The stage is set, and the play is in progress when the actor and director, Daniel Kitto, falls dead for real. Turns out that Daniel has many enemies, and his death could benefit many actors from the theatre company.

Though the police have closed the case, calling it a natural death, Morwenna is determined to find the truth. Soon, her investigation takes her on dangerous paths. Can the sexagenarian librarian and amateur sleuth expose the killer without getting killed?

The story comes in Morwenna’s third-person POV.

My Thoughts:

The book starts a few months after the end of the previous one. It should work as a standalone, though there are a few references to that case. Nothing that connects with this mystery, though.

There are many characters to track (villagers and the actors), so it might be better to read book #1 first (not that I remember all of them, but I could get into the flow without difficulty).

The pacing is slow, which I expected. However, there is some sort of plot development to keep the story going. We also have Morwenna’s personal track to follow, so the story doesn’t drag.

The mystery is well done and keeps the reader guessing. There are a couple of red herrings and twists, though everything falls into place by the end.

I enjoyed the family dynamics in the first book. This had similar elements, though I didn’t find it as endearing as before. It could be due to some decisions Morwenna takes, which seem odd. Don’t want to reveal any spoilers, but the general vibe I get from her is of someone who is bored despite her active lifestyle and wants to latch on to this mystery. She seemed a bit too possessive about the case (this is MY case vibes).

PC Jane doesn’t get much space, which is another issue for me. I like her stability and determination. The police have almost no role until the end. While this is not uncommon in the genre, there are enough instances for the police to be involved, and Morwenna can still solve the case.

I love how the FMC is a 60+ woman who bikes her way through the hills and Seal Bay roads. However, I don’t particularly like her indecisiveness. Yeah, it is necessary for the subplot. Yet, I can’t help but say that if she allotted 10% of her sleuthing time to truly explore her feelings, things would be a lot better. This is a personal preference. I’m not a fan of indecisive characters.

Elowen is a treat to read. She is 6+ in this book and knows her mind (learn from her!). The kid wants a dog, a Labrador, and will take every opportunity to ask for one. Such an adorable sweetheart!

Lamorna, Tamsin, and the side characters are well done. Some are not rounded, but that’s fine. They do the job. We still have the ghost subplot as strong as ever. I will read book three if it deals with the ghost. I hope it does since we have a lead here.

To summarize, Bloodshed on the Boards is a nice mystery with interesting characters and a great setting. The story has its merits, though I have the same feeling as I did with book one.

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

I discovered Judy Leigh via her non-mystery books but this is the first time I've read her recent cozy mystery series featuring Morwenna Mutton. It's set in Seal Bay and has a rather large cast of characters, probably expected due to it featuring an acting troupe putting on "The Return of the Cornish King". The mystery begins when Daniel Kitto, who played Uther Pendragon, literally dies onstage. At first it's thought a natural death but following instincts, Morwenna thinks otherwise.

Although I haven't read the first book in this series, I quickly warmed to Morwenna despite cringing when she, uh, "borrowed" potential evidence. She's smart, loves swimming no matter how freaking cold the ocean water is, and rides her bicycle everywhere. She also admits to herself that she still has feeling for ex-husband Ruan, who basically lives next door. That is an interesting side story but there are several bubbling under the surface. Another is her mother Lamorna, who was more than a bit enamored with Daniel, a feeling with a backstory. So, her interest in finding out what really happened to Daniel is personal although, well, one gets the idea she simply enjoys solving the puzzle of whodunit, too.

So, who killed Daniel? Turns out there are several suspects. Although Lamorna was smitten, many of those in Daniel's acting company didn't like him. But, although the troupe as a whole might benefit from his death, would one of them have hated him enough to kill him? Or, maybe the killer is a local? Could the disappointment of a stage mom at her daughter not being chosen for the child mermaid role allotted to a local have been angry enough to kill? Why is Barnaby there and will he helpful or a hindrance? Why isn't Morwenna involving the police? And, spooky, how is Lamorna getting phone calls supposedly from Daniel? Why is Morwenna paying so much attention to Ruan's comings-and-goings? Who .... oh, enough teasers.

Overall, despite being new to this relatively young series, I felt it did well as a standalone. My only real issue was trying to sort out who-was-who, a task complicated by the characters in the acting troupe, but Leigh did an excellent job introducing each and fleshing them out nicely. To be honest, since this was my intro to the series, I appreciated the initially slow moving plot though some may be anxious to move along more swiftly. I also enjoyed my introduction to the village and some of its characters and also realized at some point that I was no longer having to refer to the glossary at each local phrase/word. Fortunately, that glossary is provided early on and I did initially find it helpful although many of the terms were relatively obvious in meaning. Bottom line, I enjoyed meeting Morwenna and her family and friends although, brr, I think I'd skip those early morning swims in the cold ocean. Thanks #NetGalley and #BoldwoodBooks for introducing me to Morweena and giving me this sneak peek into her life and surroundings. I'll be back.

The Mutton women and their friends and family are mostly “proper” Cornish, with their vocabulary of regional words for which there is a handy glossary. Four generations, all fiercely independent: Lamorna, her daughter Morwenna and her granddaughter Tamsin who run the local Proper Ansom Tearoom and Tamsin’s young daughter Elowen. Morwenna also works at the local library with her friends Louise and Donald, both of whom also join her in wild swimming together with young PC Jane Choy and the Lifeboat knitters Barb and Susan Grundy. The Spriggan Travelling Theatre Company, led by Daniel Kitto, has arrived in Seal Bay to perform a Cornish version of King Arthur. Daniel is an old boyfriend of Lamorna and will be retiring to the town where he spent his youth. It soon becomes clear he is not well loved by his fellow actors, particularly as he is set to pull out of financially backing the troupe. Everyone is excited for opening night but it’s not long before it all goes wrong as Daniel (Uther Pendragon) does far more than “break a leg”. As Morgan le Fey stabs him in the play, he falls down in a pool of fake blood but he never gets to finish his final speech before Queen Guinevere declares him dead. The paramedics think he had a heart attack and although the police in the form of the rather incompetent DI Rick Tremayne are happy that his death was from natural causes, Morwenna is not so sure. There are a number of people who benefit from Daniel’s death, and so once again Morwenna undertakes a bit of sleuthing.
It's great to see all the main characters from book one returning, with one obvious exception (you’ll need to read the book to find out what happened) and also lovely to see how much Morwenna and her ex-partner Ruan still care for each other. This is a cosy crime story with some gentle sleuthing, full of twists and turns, and even a little romance, although things do turn pretty hair-raising at times for Morwenna. The inhabitants of Seal Bay are charming, vibrant and humorous and there is plenty to love in this thoroughly engrossing story. Morwenna makes a great lead character and I am keen to read more in this lovely series.

Bloodshed on the Boards is the second outing for Morwenna Mutton and the residents of Seal Bay. Morwenna is a lively, eccentric and determined lady in her early sixties. She has a full life, loves wild swimming and riding her electric bike, working part time at the library and helping out at the family’s tearoom. When it comes to her sleuthing instincts she doesn’t give up until she discovers the truth. Which is what happens when a travelling theatre group arrive in Seal Bay.

Lamorna, Morwenna’s mother, had been feeling a bit down lately but when the travelling theatre company arrives and she has a visit from Daniel Kitto, actor, owner and director of the theatre company, her spirits lift considerably. They knew each other from way back and she always had a soft spot for him.

When Daniel collapsed on stage as the first performance was coming to a close, the police class it as a natural death due to a heart attack. Morwenna’s suspicious were aroused however when she realised how unpopular Daniel was with most of the cast and how many of them stood to gain from his death. But Morwenna’s investigations were putting her and her family at risk.

'Daniel rolled his eyes and tottered forward, grasping Arthur, ready for his final soliloquy. ‘I die — leaving behind all I love, my country, my son Arthur, my heir… I go to meet my queen Igraine in the afterlife. But I have given you the best part of me, O Cornweal, home of my ancestors…’ His voice became weak. ‘I will depart now with the promise that I will always…always…’ He fell to his knees, an arm extended. The audience held their breath. ‘always love…’ Then he was still.

He didn’t move.'

I can really picture the scene. I like the addition of the theatre and the company, expanding the pool of suspects…and a good number of red herrings. And of course, the setting and the individualistic characters are wonderfully realised. Well written with an enjoyable mystery. I really like the fact Judy Leigh peoples her books with more mature characters and Morwenna is one of my favourites. I have my fingers crossed for her and Ruan, although it looks like there might be another romance on the horizon.

Bloodshed on the Boards by Judy Leigh is a Morwenna Mutton Mystery – in fact, book two in the series. I read and enjoyed the previous one – Foul Play at Seal Bay – and was looking forward to catching up with everyone again.
It’s April. We catch up with Morwenna (62) and her family, with nice reminders of who everyone is. Morwenna likes swimming in the sea with her friends (the SWANs) and has a new electric bike and a busy life with work and the odd bit of sleuthing when necessary.
There’s her daughter Tamsin (28) and her granddaughter Elowen (6), who is a brilliantly funny character, very authentic. Morwenna’s mum Lamorna (82) lives nearby, as does Morwenna’s ex Ruan. There’s a gorgeous cat called Brenda too and even the cat jumps out of the page and is right there in front of your eyes. Judy Leigh has such a wonderful talent for bringing all her characters to life.
We are back in Seal Bay in Cornwall for another murder mystery. The Spriggan Travelling Theatre Company arrive in the area and are performing the Cornish version of King Arthur. One of them is Daniel Kitto (82), who is Lamorna’s old flame! He owns the theatre company and is promising to move to Seal Bay, rekindling Lamorna’s hopes of them getting back together.
But then… there’s a murder!!!
I don’t want to tell you any more of the story, because I’d recommend you read this wonderful book yourself and discover all its joys as it unfolds…
I have read lots of Judy’s books in all three genres she writes as (one as Elena Collins) and have loved all of them. As well as the humour and wit in her novels and the fabulous characters and stories, her settings are excellent too. In the Morwenna Mutton series, Seal Bay comes to life with its coast, all the little shops around and the people who live and work in the area. It’s all so easy to picture and you feel like you are there, right in with all the action. Having said that, I’m just popping into the Proper Ansom Tearoom for a pot of tea and a scone…

Morwenna Mutton is back and better than ever! She is still riding her bicycle around Seal Bay, although now she has an electric model. She still works at the library and the family tea shop. She's still a wild swimming enthusiast. She still knows her own mind and is who she is. And when murder comes to town, she's still ready to investigate.

When a travelling theatre comes to Seal Bay, everyone looks forward to the entertainment. Even the kids get involved, auditioning to be mermaids in the play. The theatre company isn't one big happy family, though, and the director and leading actor heartily disliked. While shocking for the audience, there were not too many sad members of the company when he collapsed and died in the middle of his big scene. Everyone assumes he died of a heart attack, but Morwenna Mutton thinks something else is going on, so she decided to dig around a little to see what she can find out.

This is one of my favourite cosy mystery series. Morwenna is a great character. I love the focus on her and the other women and future women in her family--her mother, daughter, and granddaughter--and their relationships. The quirky village characters are delightful. The mysteries are twisty enough to be interesting, but not convoluted. It was such a treat to be able to immerse myself in this book while I was reading it. If you're a cosy fan who likes books featuring strong older women, female friendships, generational relationships, Cornwall village life, fun characters, and well plotted mysteries, then you might love this book (and the first one) as much as I do! Highly recommend.

I've not read Judy Leigh's first Morwenna Mutton Mystery, Foul Play at Seal Bay, but I was able to jump straight into Bloodshed on the Boards and have Morwenna appear fully formed and welcome like an old friend. It did not matter that this was the second book, although there were mentions made of the previous case. The book has a cheery start with a handy glossary of Cornish phrases and Morwenna and a friend taking one of their regular SWANs sea swims - this frequent pastime sounded refreshing but freezing!

The story is a modern cosy mystery set in a bustling and well-described seaside town. Morwenna is a no-nonsense, independent grandmother and Seal Bay is a delightful setting, full of quaint shops, tea rooms and Morwenna's workplace, the local library. Morwenna's daughter, granddaughter and mother all feature heavily in the book, as does her (not quite so) ex-husband Ruan and a large cast of supporting characters from Seal Bay and the visiting acting troupe.

Despite the official outcome, Morwenna is convinced that Daniel's death was suspicious and sets about investigating, using different ruses to find information and track down suspects, on her trusty electric bike. She also finds time to take an interest in Ruan's developing friendship with one of the actors and simultaneously to be whisked off her feet by a visiting handsome plastic surgeon.

I enjoyed my time with Morwenna, the book has a steady pace and plenty of time in it for "a cuppa". The ending is suitably dramatic and I did not see it coming. Recommended for gentle cosy lovers who might also like a little romance. Thank you to the publisher for my copy of Bloodshed on the Boards and to Rachel's Random Resources for my spot on the tour.

Morwenna Mutton has mixed emotions when a theatre company arrives in Seal Bay. Her granddaughter gets a role in the production which is exciting but the unpopular lead actor starts dating her mother. Then he dies on stage, apparently of natural causes, but Morwenna suspects one of his enemies of murder...
Bloodshed on the Boards is the second book to feature amateur sleuth Morwenna in Cornwall. I have previously read and reviewed the first book in the series, Foul Play at Seal Bay. There are mentions of events and outcomes from the first book but no major spoilers.
Morwenna adores her family so is thrilled when Elowen gets to perform on stage. She is less thrilled that Daniel Kitto is dating her mum Lamorna especially after he almost ran her over on their first meeting! She isn't the only one who finds Daniel a bit jarring and after his death she believes that someone killed him.
There are a host of suspects and motives after Morwenna 'borrows' some evidence and discovers that Daniel was murdered. She can't help launching into her own investigation: I think she enjoys the sense of purpose it gives her as well as the opportunity to find closure for her grieving mother.
I liked the family focus of the book and the strong relationships across the generations. Elowen's obsession with getting a dog did start to irritate me a little but seemed an accurate depiction of a small child's relentless nagging! Morwenna and her ex Ruan get along well to support the family dynamic but there are unresolved issues as both try to move on romantically.
Bloodshed on the Boards is an enjoyable cosy murder mystery. I have to mention the Cornish landscape and culture which thread through the plot, characters and dialogue, vividly bringing the book to life.

Bloodshed On The Boards by Judy Leigh is a gripping contemporary cosy mystery which I loved. It is part of A Morwenna Mutton Mystery series but can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed meeting up with familiar faces.
Morwenna Mutton is a wonderful leading lady. She is in her sixties, a very unique character as she rides her electric bike through Cornwall’s winding lanes. Her heart is warm and welcoming. Her mind spins as she tries to solve the puzzles around her.
Bloodshed On The Boards is amateur sleuthing at its finest. Morwenna Mutton is a modern-day Miss Marple, preferring her own investigating before involving her friend in the police. She thinks on her feet as well as in her head.
This is a small community that lives together, laughs together and supports local businesses together. The local café is warm and welcoming, being easy to picture in my head. Judy Leigh writes with an artistic pen, ‘showing’ us around the area.
Wild swimming happens weekly but only the hardiest of souls turns up.
All the characters were wonderfully drawn. The dialogue between them was warm, and often witty. I loved Morwenna Mutton’s granddaughter who, at six years old, took every opportunity to ask her Mum for a dog – including when performing on stage!
Bloodshed On The Boards has a murder to solve. The reader tries to unravel the clues until Morwenna Mutton fills in the blanks for us.
I adore all Judy Leigh’s books. They are warm, witty, welcoming and extremely well executed. I always know I will be in for a treat when I pick up one of her books.
I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Bloodshed on the Boards by Judy Leigh

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

There is excitement in the air as the travelling theatre arrives in Seal Bay. When The Spriggan Travelling Theatre Company arrives in Seal Bay to perform a Cornish version of King Arthur the locals flock to be entertained. But for Morwenna Mutton, sexagenarian librarian, wild swimming enthusiast and amateur sleuth, the theatre brings intrigue too. Actor and director Daniel Kitto is not the most popular member of the cast and unbeknownst to him, his role of Uther Pendragon on the opening night is to be his swansong.

And once it becomes clear that there are a number of people who stand to gain from Daniel’s death, Morwenna’s investigation takes a dangerous turn.

My Opinion

Judy Leigh writes some great books, but I have to say that as a character I am loving Morwenna. Morwenna travels everywhere on her bike and makes for such a lovable character. This is a series that I need no encouragement to read. I read the first 50% of this book in one sitting, and then I was so eager to return for the second half of the book.

Judy Leigh writes about older characters, but the books are still thoroughly entertaining. This is the second book in a new cosy mystery series and whilst the book would work as a standalone, I would recommend reading the books in order.

Morwenna Mutton is the librarian in Seal Bay, but also an amateur sleuth. When the Spriggan Travelling Theatre Company arrives in town to perform a Cornish version of King Arthur the locals are excited to be entertained. Unfortunately for the Company, there are hard feelings, especially when it comes to actor and director Daniel Kitto. He is playing the role of Uther Pendragon, but opening night is also closing night for Daniel. Originally, his death is considered natural causes, but Morwenna is sure he was murdered. Now to figure out who has the most to gain from his death to find the culprit.

Morwenna is an interesting character and sleuth. She is extremely busy with her work at the library, working at her daughter's tea shop, wild swimming and spending time with her family and friends. She is also smart, able to put clues together and intuit things. She is also perseverant and doesn't give up easily, putting herself in danger at times. I love that she gets around on her bicycle, although this time, she is at risk while riding. Her family are awesome. Four generations of women who support one another including helping her out while trying to figure out who killed the nasty, odious Daniel Kitto. I enjoyed the mystery, with it's Miss Marple feel to it. The setting is wonderful and I love how it is described throughout the story. The Cornish language adds a touch of authenticity and there is a glossary to explain the words. I do recommend you read the first book, as it is referred to in this story. This is another fun cozy mystery with an older protagonist, but with multi-generational characters to make it more relatable to all readers.

I love Judy Leigh’s books and especially her vivid portrayal of older characters showing that people don’t become invisible once they reach a certain age. This newish cosy crime series is a fairly new departure for her but showed many of the elements of her other books.
Morwenna is a spirited 62 year old who loves her family, riding her bike everywhere and swimming in the sea. When a travelling theatre group arrives, she discovers that her mother and the theatre director have a romantic history. On the first night of the production, the director dies of an apparent heart attack and the stage is set for an intriguing mystery.
Morwenna is a really vivid main character and Judy Leigh does a great job of creating a real character with an interesting family. As with the author’s other books, there is a whole cast of supporting characters some of whom are more fully rounded out than others. I did love Susan and Barb, the knitting sisters who are constantly looking for new things to knit to raise money for the Lifeboat charity.
The mystery is an interesting one with plenty of red herrings to send Morwenna and the reader off on the wrong track before all being sorted out. The story was a little far fetched for me as I’m fairly sure that the police wouldn’t have allowed Morwenna such a free hand especially towards the end.
On the whole though, it was an entertaining read and I’m grateful to Net Galley and Boldwood Books for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Well I didn't guess the killer, so that is always good for a murder mystery. I really enjoyed this, it's just a lovely cosy murder mystery and I love that it is set in Cornwall. I love the main character Morwenna, but I have to say her mum steals the show for me, her character is amazingly written. I hope the author continues with this series.
If you love a cosy crime mystery then I recommend reading this.

We are back in Cornwall with Morwenna and her friends. This is the second in the series but happily stands alone. There’s a play in town and when the unpopular director, owner and lead is killed on stage for real there are plenty of suspects, but there is one who knows Morwenna will be using her detective skills to discover the real perpetrator. The police have said it's a natural death from a heart attack but Morwenna is sure that there is more to it and the more she finds out the more someone is threatening her- but who?

This is one of those reads that you can happily sit by the fire and snuggle down with. One that puts the reader in the heart of the action and in Cornwall, and occasionally in the sea as Morwenna swims. There’s a great cast of characters who make you feel at home and mentions of scones and jam and toasted teacakes after a bracing swim. This is another of Judy’s wonderful reads that is more than thoroughly enjoyable. It's a cozy type mystery with family, drama and even a little romance thrown in, showing that you are never too old- for anything if you put your mind to it. A brilliantly entertaining read, I look forward to more in the series.

I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.

This is the second in a series of cosy mysteries set in the Cornish village of Seal Bay, featuring Morwenna Mutton as the protagonist. I read the first book in this series, Foul Play at Seal Bay, last year, and I enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to reading this.

I really enjoyed reading about Morwenna again, and from the first few pages, this book made me smile. I found the characters fun, quirky and endearing, and the Cornish setting felt like a little escape for me. In this book, I felt as though I got to know Morwenna better and began to connect with her a little bit. She seems to have a strong bond with some of the other characters, like Lamorna, Tamsin and Elowen, and that resonated with me. I enjoyed the humour throughout the book, and there were some moments when the characters and their behaviour made me chuckle.

Morwenna actually reminds me a little bit of M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin, but I think she is a little bit warmer and kinder. I would recommend this series to cosy mystery fans. Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, Rachel's Random Resources, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this.

Morwenna Mutton is an eccentric and clever sixty-something that I love as I think the more you age the more you get the right to be eccentric and don't care about what other think about you.
I was glad to catch up with her and the cast of quirky characters. I liked them in the first instalment in this series and loved in this second one.
This is a well done and highly entertaining cosy mystery: there's the right level of mystery, small town vibe, weird characters that never take the front seat and makes the mystery an accidental part of the plot.
I love Judy Leigh's storytelling and style of writng and this solid and fast paced novel kept me hooked and being surprised.
Can't wait for the next one, this one is highly recommended.
Many thanks to Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random Resources for this arc, all opinions are mine.

Four generations of the Mutton clan,
A returning love and theatrical plan,
A death no one else seems to find strange
Till Morwenna collects clues to rearrange!

A mermaid, King Arthur and swims in the sea,
Suspicions, suspects and a killer running free.
Can Morwenna the evidence piece correctly together -
Or will the killer remain free forever?

A hated man dies performing on stage,
The cast and crew seem on the same page.
His death means for them the shows carry on
Perhaps they’re too happy that now he has gone?

Another enthralling Cornish cosy crime thriller
With Morwenna Morton seeking the killer.
I really enjoyed it from beginning to end
And have no hesitation as this read I highly recommend!

For my copy of this book I say thank you
As I share with you this my honest review.

I received a copy of the book for a free and unbiased opinion.
Bloodshed on the boards by Judy Leigh is a lovely cosy mystery set in Cornwall. I loved the fact the lead amateur detective is confident woman in her sixties living a great life. In fact ,Morwenna’s mother is equally fascinating as character.
There are a suitable number of suspicious characters with their own strange motives, and I have to admit I didn’t guess the identity of ‘who did it’.
Seal Bay and the villagers form a lovely backdrop to the mystery and Morwenna’s busy romantic life and there are some lovely descriptions of Cornwall. I liked the peppering of the dialogue with Cornish with a help guide at the start of the book.

A local grandmother gets involved in a murder of a local actor.

I have read only one other of this authors novels, and I found it and this book enjoyable, mostly as is focuses on older characters and how they are still active in society and capable still of many things.

I personally didn’t get overly invested in any of the characters and the freedom of the main character was a bit unrealistic that the police wouldn’t be more involved. What kept me motivated was the mystery itself who did it and why did they do it. There was plenty of red herrings and the storyline was fun to follow —it was entertaining enough to keep me going until the end of the book.

Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood books for this ARC . This is my honest review.

2 1/2 stars. This is a strong mystery with enough twists and red herrings to keep it entertaining. But its strongest point is the characters, family and sense of community that is interwoven throughout the story. The Cornish setting is beautiful and the local vibes very much make it stand out as a distinct place. I got a little bit lost in the beginning keeping straight the characters but I figured it out without destroying the flow much.

Morwenna did one of the things that annoys me about amateur detectives: going off with a suspect alone even though she had taken some precautions. This is a pet peeve of mine so it lessened my enjoyment of the story at the very end.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

Bloodshed on the Boards is the second in the Morwenna Mutton cosy mysteries. I've read the first book in the series.

I very much enjoyed this second book in the Morwenna Mutton series. Now that we know all about Morwenna and her family and why Morwenna first turned her hand to sleuthing, I feel the storyline flowed much better. I could fully invest in the mystery and how she would solve it. (I often find this with a cosy mystery series). And this one was a really entertaining and well-thought-out mystery - cosy it may well be, but I do like my mysteries to have a very good backstory, and this addition to the series certainly does.

I will certainly be reading more of the series and would recommend it to fans of the genre and to those who are already Judy Leigh fans. It was highly enjoyable.

I was going to give this 3 stars, but I decided on 4 because I believe the story was good. I listened to it as an audio book though and I felt the narrator was really the reason for 3 stars, so I changed it.

There is a play at the local theatre in Seal Bay and one of Morwenna's mother's old beaus is part of it. They start to spent time together again, but then he is found dead and it's up to Morwenna and the police to figure out what happened.

The town of Seal Bay was still delightful as well as all the characters that we met in the first book. I love the relationship between Morweena and her ex-husband.

I will say as a Canadian I thought "Bloodshed on the Boards" would be about hockey, but it wasn't. :)
