Indigenous Liberation & Socialism

Rate this book
Australia is a profoundly racist society : the cops continue to murder Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, land rights are trod on to dig up fossil fuels, far-right vigilantes whip up attacks on Indigenous youth, and the gaps between Indigenous and non-indigenous people endure in income, health, education and housing. As the Liberal Party runs vile, racist campaigns against Indigenous rights, all the Labor Party offers is symbolic recognition without substantial change. For anyone seeking a radical alternative, this book is essential. Indigenous Liberation & Socialism delves into the history and politics of Indigenous struggle, exploring the forgotten legacy of the workers' movement and the socialist left in the fight for justice against Indigenous oppression. It presents a compelling argument that the liberation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will only be won if we build a multi-racial anti-capitalist movement which can smash all systems of oppression. Jordan Humphreys is a socialist activist in Sydney and a member of the Marxist Left Review editorial committee. He has been researching and writing about Indigenous struggles in Australia since 2019. Brilliant book that goes into the long but often forgotten radical history of indigenous liberation in Australia. Very easy to read and often find myself going back to it for historical facts and arguments around modern political ideas.

Excellent analysis of Indigenous oppression in Australia, how it has been fought in the past, and how we can end it

I enjoyed this book a lot. In particular it explores the hidden history of links between Indigenous activists, socialists and unionists - even in the 19th century, in a brilliant chapter. This is the social force through which change can come.
