Rose of the Fae

Rate this book
A rose mage who cannot utter her own name.

A fae prince who never had one.

The fae queen who desires to use them both to start her reign of darkness.

Favorite of the fae Queen of the Eclipse Court, Rose–or Ruby, as everyone knows her–had been raised with all the privileges and luxuries of a princess, despite being human. And all the queen has ever asked in return is for Rose–the only known rose mage in existence–to gather for her the magical rose oil. But the queen is no benign ruler, and Rose knows better than any the darkness and power the queen will use to get her own way.

Playing the puppet for the sake of her friends, Rose has had little choice but to obey the queen since she was small–even when it broke her heart. But when the queen makes a request of Rose that she dares not fulfill, Rose makes her escape from the queen’s dark domain into the magical–and dangerous–world of Faerie.

Despite his closest friend’s betrayal five years before, Aemon and his followers escaped the Eclipse Court and have been doing their best to stop his mother from spilling her darkness out of the Eclipse Court into Faerie and the rest of Aerovain. Which shakes him all the more when he finds his childhood friend and betrayer on his doorstep, begging for help to save Aerovain. And though her story seems credible, Aemon wants little to do with Ruby…even if she’s blossomed into the most beautiful creature he’s ever seen.

Whether they want to or not, however, Rose and Aemon have little choice. If they wish to keep the powerful oil out of his mother’s hands, they must flee to the Winter Court–the home of Aemon’s estranged father. And as they and their friends flee north, they find that Vashti isn’t their only enemy. Rose’s humanity makes her a target for the local fae, as does Aemon’s lack of a True Name. And it quickly becomes undeniably clear that they must learn how to fulfill the roles they were meant to play.

For if Rose can’t become the rose mage the world needs…

If Aemon can’t complete his magic…

The Eclipse Queen will soon rule them all.

Read this young adult fae fantasy adventure today for complex, colorful magic, clean childhood sweethearts, forbidden romance, and the lore and legends of Faerie like never before.

I’ve been saying I need to try fantasy and finally did😂 for the first while I was thinking it’s totally not for me, and I’m still not sure that it will be my go-to genre😂 but after a while I started to like this story! I really liked the way the author weaved God into this story in ways that you had to think about (reminded me of Narnia at times). I’m interested to see how this story will continue in the other books, but kinda hope the pace is a little faster in the next ones.

3.5 stars.

Plot- Disney’s Tangled is my all time favorite movie and this book sort of reminded me of that storyline (in some aspects). The plot is good.

Romance- There’s pretty good chemistry and tension until the “I love you’s” at 65% mark. Then the chemistry dips a bit, unfortunately. (It doesn’t have to be that way- many authors are able to keep it going!)

They are totally dedicated to each other but their romance is made impossible at the end due to outside circumstances (yay for not being a negative motivation), so that’s another conflict for book 2 to handle. I really hope the author is able to get the chemistry going again in book 2… maybe a MMC jealous scene or two (*smiles wickedly*)…

Writing- Sentence structure and other technical writing was good! The writing also held up from a holistic perspective: everyone makes sound decisions and the plot and world building are both good.
The fae origin story reminds me of God and His continued watchcare over His children. So there were some interesting religious connections that I made that rang familiar and true to me.

Pacing- slow around the 70% mark. Not much was happening and I felt the length of the book. I think the scene when she’s learning from the librarian could have been cut, for instance. Too much explanation and rehashing what we already know. Maybe too much internalizing throughout which slowed the progress a bit.

Cliffhanger - There is a cliffhanger but it’s not used as a torture device. The conflict with the villain and the romance are both unfinished, but everyone is in a good place. This sets up well for the next book.

(TBH, I wanted the romance to wrap up- since the chemistry seemed spent- so that the second book could be written from the perspective of a new FMC and MMC (King Demetrius from Spring Court!) romantic couple, but it didn’t work out that way, which is okay.)

Characters-
Dual POV. Well rounded main characters with good supporting characters. The FMC is very endearing. She is my favorite type- honest and good, strong in character, endures hardships with grace, smart and good at making decisions, sunshiny (but not cheesy).

Content-
Language- no swearing.
Spice- clean. No innuendo. Some sweet kisses.
Format- KU

*update- I’m not sure I’m going to continue the series. Book 3 isn’t out for a while and I’m not getting the impression that there’s amazing chemistry in Book 2. I enjoyed this first book in the series and I’ll move on. I might check out other novels by this author in the future. I appreciate clean fantasy romance authors.

"Silver Rose Please heed my cry
My magic sings alone
Give me now my own duet
Thaw this heart of stone."

I am obsessed with this book! Brittany weaves together Christianity with the fantasy world of the fae seamlessly. I can't tell you how many times I had goosebumps while reading! It was an eerie reflection of the naive brokenness that is so present in our world and the light that is ours if we only have the courage to submit our hearts.

Not only is the world-building amazing, but the love story is beautiful. I am a huge fan of both Aemon & Rose. They each have their own battles and it's so refreshing seeing them encourage each other on. I think that is the best part of a healthy relationship. They see the best in one another without ignoring their shortcomings.

I am thoroughly captivated by 'Rose of the Fae'! Brittany adeptly melds elements of Christianity with the mystical realm of the fae, resulting in a seamless blend that left me truly impressed. The story effectively mirrors the harsh realities and the glimmer of hope present in our own world.

The lead character provides a striking representation of a life where every action, word, and thought is dictated by others. However, when her oppressors push her too far, she seizes the opportunity to break free.

The primary focus of this book starting the series centers on her escape and the heartfelt reunion with a childhood friend. Their journey involves tackling the predicaments they encounter, and a central question emerges: can trust be rebuilt between them after past turmoil? I appreciate the author's portrayal of trust as a complex concept that requires dedicated effort to mend. This intricate exploration, combined with the formidable challenges the characters face, enhances the book's entertainment value.

In my view, 'Rose of the Fae' is a captivating read. If you appreciate stories of childhood friends-to-lovers, robust character development, and fantasy with biblical themes, I wholeheartedly recommend this book and I’m really looking forward to the next installment in the series.

I read this ARC while on vacation, but as the book was not available for review when I got back home, I completely forgot about posting it until now.

The heroine of this book could be seen as a good example of someone who has lived a life where others have dictated what she was or was not allowed to do, say or even think.. until the oppressor went too far, causing her to escape.

This first book in the series mostly deals with her escape and reunion with her childhood friend and the search for a solution to the trouble they find themselves in. Can she get her friend to trust her again after what happened between them when they were younger?

I like how the author shows that trust is not something that can be repaired at once, but that it takes work to try building it back up again.

This, on top of trying to deal with a dangerous situation makes for a very entertaining book to read, and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.I have complete faith that it will be just as entertaining as this one.

Excellent Beginning to a New Series!

Another take on fairies by Brittany Fichter. I don't know how she comes up with all these new ideas. Each new original series tends to get a bit more serious, but unlike authors she doesn't get into grimdark, which is appreciated.

All the characters we got to spend time with were interesting with parts of their past or character being revealed piece by intriguing piece. I was hooked and couldn't read this fast enough! Rose isn't a physically strong person, thanks to her upbringing, but has integrity and fortitude. Aemon has doubts about himself, but perseveres b/c he knows he needs to, people are relying on him. Both from the same broken, hidden evil home, they need to make their way to safety and figure out how to thwart the evil queen. WHAT COULD BE MORE INTERESTING?

Ruby/Rose is a human who was kidnapped by a powerful fae queen, who turns out to be someone far worse than the darkness she already lives in. Rose has had to learn how to turn off her emotions as she works with removing the oil from the roses, the oil which makes her "mother" more powerful. But Rose has a side of her she knows nothing about and wonders why she craves the oil that she is harvesting and why she can sense darkness around her and it causes her such pain. Her best friend Aemon is the son of this fae woman and the one who comforts and helps Rose through her life.

As lives part and then come back together more develops between Aemon and Rose, but they have to fight together to save the world from the wicked woman who raised them!

This is a clean read, no bad language and no sexual scenes.

I'm not this patient

First for the good parts: this is quite a fascinating take on the fae. The magic and culture are a little different from anything I've seen in this vein, and the history--which is just beginning to be revealed toward the end of this volume--is intriguing. If the characters were better and the story moved along faster, I'd be interested enough to keep reading.

Unfortunately, both of the main characters are extremely whiny. Rose doesn't want the magic she has and Aemon doesn't have the magic he needs. And it takes 500+ pages to get them to the next stage of their seemingly useless efforts to stop the evil queen.

This book isn't poorly written, it's just not a story I am patient enough to continue with.

Rose is fighting the role her magic would have her play, a role that causes her pain and almost everyone is trying to push her into. Aemon is struggling to fulfill his role without completed magic that most others his age have. The book follows their adventures both physically and emotionally. The book is full of mystery and suspense as well as creative magic systems and continent-wide world building. It has a good balance of action, emotional moments, and mystery without ever lingering on one too long. There is also a very sweet (and clean) budding romance. Rose of the Fae is the exciting beginning to the Rose of Destiny series.

Stunning and Enchanting!

This book may be my new favorite of the author's, and that is saying a lot as I have loved all her work! The world she has formed in this book, particularly the magic systems, are lifelike and wonderous. The elegance and detail of the magic, both for fae and the mysterious rose mage, are written masterfully.
But it's the characters that stole my heart: Rose and Aemon are achingly sweet and wonderfully real, both as individuals and as childhood sweethearts. Their story has enthralled me in the best possible way, and I can't wait for the next book!

Meh

This book had a great story, but unfortunately was bogged down by repetition and guessing things that happened later on. The length could have been cut down and still been enjoyable. I was going to give it two stars, but the ending was good, so I slapped on another. I don't think I'll be reading the next book, as I had to push through the middle of this one. I honestly only kept reading because I had already DNFed too many this year.

I loved this story. It's one of the best books that I've ever read that has taken place in Faerie and I love all the Christian allusions through the Silver Rose. Rose and Aemon both grew and evolved so much and I can't wait to read Rose of the Dawn as this book ended on a cliffhanger. I'm curious about who Nia is and why Keldon knows her. Brittany Fichter did a great job of weaving mystery and intrigue together and creating a compelling novel that I just couldn't put down.

Fantastic start to a new series

I really enjoyed this book and read it in one day! It really captures my attention and I couldn’t put it down.

I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of the rose mage and the whole world building in this book. There was any ‘dead’ moments in the story and was very readable.

As always? Engaging, riveting, and un put-downable

Throughout the story, I felt Ruby/Rose'angst and joys. I was frustrated with Aemon at his feeling of incompleteness - something I can very much relate with.

There were so many minor stories underneath that had me trying to guess how they applied to the larger story- Nia, for one.
I am eager to dive into part 2.

So good! It was a little slow at points but per usual I loved it. I love every book by Brittany that I've read so far, she never disappoints. It was exciting and new, the romance is swoony but clean, and the adventure and stakes are high.

I did enjoy this one, again, there is a resemblance to this author's seer's trilogy and I was a bit nervous that I would enjoy the first one same like in that one, only to be let down by the rest of the books. This being said, this is much more entertaining.

This book surprised me. I didn’t expect to enjoy this book nearly as much as I did, though I’m not sure why since Fichter’s one of the best author’s I’ve read. The characters are well developed with interesting backgrounds. Aemon and Rose meet again after five years and then go on a journey to find Aemon’s father and stop his mother. Rose doesn’t want to be a rose mage and is often angry about that. Aemon is constantly frustrated by his lack of a true name but terrified of his own power. Between deaths and the high stakes, there’s a lot of tension. Twists and turns fill the book. The villain is multifaceted and fascinating. Excellent pacing. Highly recommended to anyone who really likes stories with more dangerous fae, mystery, and suspense.

Fair warning: Neither character is feeling very hopeful at the end of book 1, but they’ve both made progress on their personal journeys. There’s still a hopeful undercurrent throughout the book that carries through to book 2.

I haven’t opened a fantasy book in a long time. This, this book was worth the read. It was refreshing from the fiction I usually read.

This is a very good clean/action/fantasy/coming of age, (more accurate description) coming into magic. Realizing who you are, who you can become, you’ll need to take the more difficult road, only to be stronger/better in the end.

The writing is good. The imagination wonderful. It is a fun book to read.

It is also a retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

Eep! Okay, so this may be my favorite of Fichter's covers! It's SO BEAUTIFUL! (Though I am partial to Cinders, Stars, & Glass Slippers and the Autumn Fairy--the nostalgia, you guys, the nostalgia.) But not only is this fat new book gorgeously covered, it signifies new territory for Fichter, too: the world of the fae. And not her Classical Kingdoms fae, but a more traditional fae world and story--with the inevitable Fichter Fiction Twist.

Honestly, I really enjoyed this one. Fae books are hit or miss for me, but I trust Fichter with content levels and I love seeing her build whole new worlds and magic systems cause she does epic fantasy justice. This one was a slow start for me. But about 9 chapters in, we shift into gear and it was hard to put it down after that.

The characters balance some of the traditional fae qualities we see in popular fiction (perfection, agility, strength, courts, magic, tempers, etc.) with real, tangible desires and fears. One of the first things that drew me to Fichter's work was her characters, and I really loved seeing the struggle of humanity within this new cast (fae or not).

This story explores the question of humanity and purpose, something I think we all wrestle with to some degree. I loved seeing Rose come into her own and her bravery to leave all she's ever known to stand for what's right, in spite of the literal pain it causes. And Aemon was just plain fun. I really enjoyed seeing how he wrestled with self-control and nobility in a society of impulse and pleasure-seeking fae as well as how he had to come to terms with being worthy of love and wanted. Again, such deep core desires and fears we all deal with in some way at some time. It was cool seeing how the characters sought something deeper and more meaningful and that's the kind of story that challenges me as a reader to do the same in my own life.

I was a little confused by the world and opening. The names and customs and magic were difficult to process and grasp and there are still questions I have that I look forward to seeing answers to later on. But the neat thing about Fichter's world is how well it sets up this perfect look at cultural pressures and norms vs. pushing against the bandwagon to do what's right. The magic system is intriguing and I'm curious to see more of it unfold in subsequent books (I was super intrigued by the weapons tradition and how it was tied to the fae magic. Song magic was cool and the idea of the nature magic is fun, but we don't see much outside of the rose oil magic, which I'm still a little lost on.) But thematically, this story holds such potential for the beauty of God's grace and loving sacrifice. A theme that resonates deeply with me (and I'm sure many others).

The plot itself was intriguing, again after the story got to moving. And the world feels so expansive. I sure hope we explore other courts in the other books too. But most of all, I'm reeling from THAT TWIST AT THE END guuuyyysss. So, like, I thought I had guessed it (and I did one of the twists--well foreshadowed, Fichter. Well foreshadowed. But THE OTHER?! It was perfectly executed and NOT something I saw coming!)

Content: there's a clean romance and some fantasy violence. No swearing. But definitely the contrast of dark vs light in the world, exploring the idea of seeking pleasure to the fullest vs using our gifts for how they were intended, which results in some selfish motives and capable villains. I'd probably recommend the book for a 16+ reader.

Thank you, Brittany, for the advanced reader copy <3 As always, a faithful, but voluntary and honest reviewer here. ;)

A Fae Tale Full of Twists and Turns

The story of Rose and Aemon begins with interwoven flashbacks to their childhood when Aemon was her protector, a role he has not abandoned. Now for their "mother" Vashti. Add her to the stable of Wicked Queens, Wicked Witches, and Maleficent, and she would win that fight. Evil to the nth degree and then we are thrown in the ending chapters even more, as she has her moment to pontificate. As this is the first book, we have a cliffhanger- Rose's life is taking another turn. Book two is on the horizon!
