Learn to see the world with the smarts and visual acumen of a great designer. This treasure trove of pithy aphorisms, longer-form essays, and first-person interviews compiles years of design school education into one comprehensive yet compact book. Here are lessons in life and work, learned both in the classroom and on the job, from design teachers, students, and gurus, covering everything from practical know-how to big-picture brilliance. Design School Wisdom provides a well of inspiration for aspiring designers, visual thinkers, students, grads, and professional creatives looking to reinvigorate their practice.
Heaps of tips and tricks, and valuable information about design education. Couple of quotes I liked from the book : "Critique is an opportunity for growth, both as a designer and as a person." "Your long-term success in design will come from three things: perseverance; commitment; and patience, particularly with yourself." "I know what I know, but do I know what they know? If everyone is designing, what does it mean to go to school to study design? What should the knowledge look like?" "The best inspiration comes from unexpected sources. Let life inspire your designs."
Really short read with amazing inspirational quotes and ideas from graphic designers all over the world. I thought this would be an interesting read as I start my career in product management. This will definitely be a book I refer to sometime in the future for just some design wisdom. I'll have to add some quotes from the book later.
As someone who has had ZERO experience in or education on the world of design, this was a useful, approachable starting point that's heavy on the life lessons. I've been trying to read texts from different fields and apply them to mathematics and math education, and this book provided me with a lot of transferrable insights. Speedy read.
"Looking at the development of our writing system since the hieroglyphics, one can witness a gradual simplification of form. It is this simplifying, reducing, and abstracting of information which is one of the main criteria in the language of graphic design." ~Franz Werner, RISD
"Your long-term success in design will come from three things: perseverance; commitment; and patience, particularly with yourself." ~Hank RIchardson, Portfolio Center
