In my teens I was a huge X-Files fan. And when I say huge, I mean the kind that had taped all the episodes from TV, had the official season companions, and debated endless theories on the identity of the Well-Manicured Man, The Cigarette-Smoking Man, what happened to Samantha, and so and so forth. So when handed a review copy of a thriller on the origin of mankind and a mention of Area 51, I'm there—aliens, conspiracies, shadowy organisations, my fifteen-year-old self would have kicked me for passing it by. And while I enjoyed this trip down memory lane, I had some problems with Brannan's writing in Origin.

First and foremost, there is the info dumping; because there is a lot of info dumping in this book. The reason is quite understandable as there is quite a lot of background information that needs to be conveyed, both of a scientific nature and as regards the various theories and conspiracies that surround the possibility of aliens having visited Earth. However, Brannan's manner of going into these explanations is far from elegant. The narrative is mainly told in third person simple past tense, but on numerous occasions Brannan starts a new paragraph after a white line in the present tense and gives a short – sometimes single sentence – explanation about the location we're in, the science being discussed etc. which only emphasised the fact that here was an explanation. There was a lot of telling, not showing of the most important plot points and that made for a less than smooth reading experience.

Several other things nagged. The story is told from an omniscient third person point of view, which admittedly isn't my favourite narrative viewpoint. What bothered me most about it though was the inconsistency of some of the name usage. For example, Lynn is consequently referred to as Lynn, except when we're watching through the villains' consciousness, when she is referred to as Edwards. However, Matt Adams is, with a few exceptions when Lynn is contemplating emotional things, always referred to as Adams, even when we're following Lynn, which makes no sense, as he's her ex and theirs doesn't seem the kind of relationship where they playfully call each other by their last name. The story head hops quite a bit. While it's never unclear in whose head we are, there are a lot of heads to keep track off and that compared with the letter soup the villains swim around in (all the TLA-agencies and then some are represented) can get a little confusing.

While I obviously had some issues with the writing, there is also a lot Brannan gets right. In Lynn and Adams he has a very sympathetic pair of lead characters, who it's very easy to root for. We learn only a little about their history, but we do get to watch them reconnect and realise that they still love each other, a development which is very enjoyable to follow. Still, Origin isn't a book that is powered by its development of character; it's driven by its nail-biting plot. Our characters get little or no chance to breathe during the entire novel, as they are continually on the run, first to evade their enemies and later to prevent them from carrying out their nefarious plan. It is here that Origin shines with a well thought through plot and short, pacey chapters that make reading 'just one more chapter' both very easy and very treacherous, because stopping at one more is all but impossible.

What Brannan definitely gets right is his research into the various alien theories and conspiracies, not just those concerning aliens, but larger ones as well. He not only name checks and incorporates a lot of the standard alien-related phenomena, such as Roswell, Area 51, the Nazca lines, and the theories of Erich von Däniken, but also brings in other well-loved objects of conspiracy theorist, such as the Bilderberg Group and the Large Hadron Collider. It was fun spotting all of these and seeing how Brannan put them together in quite an original way.

Origin ends on a large 'Aha!'-moment, one I hadn't seen coming at all, though Brannan had seeded the clues to this from almost the start of the novel. Then again hindsight is 20/20 and this gathering together of clues and still being surprised is what makes reading these kinds of books such fun. The ending of Origin is intriguing and leaves an opening for a sequel, though I haven't been able to discover anything on a second book set in this world in the works. Despite my issues with the writing, Origin's plot comes through to form a good, if flawed, debut. Brannan shows he's got the chops to come up with a very interesting plot, great action and a break-neck pace. It'll be interesting to see how he develops as a writer, because the story-telling talent is there. Meanwhile, if you enjoy a good, roaring fast thriller with an X-Files vibe, Origin is the book for you.

As the saying goes, “Whoa, doggies!” If you’re looking for a nice, gentle read that leaves you with a feeling of comfort and peace, Origin by J.T. Brannan is not the book you want. If, on the other hand, you have a yen for a thriller that leaves you pretty nearly breathless on every page, then grab this and go curl up in a comfy chair.

There are thrillers and then there are thrillers. This is the kind that takes you on a wild action adventure ride of improbabilities and I loved every minute of it (well, maybe not so much the scene with the teeth). Lynn Edwards and Matt Adams, two characters I have to say have been added to my list of favorites, are perfectly suited to each other and kudos to the author for making them true equals in intelligence and abilities even though their strengths are different. They complement each other .

They also have luck, a lot of it, and it’s both kinds. Just when you think the bad guys are going to get the best of them, they manage to pull the fat out of the fire but the truth is the bad guys are insanely capable of winning the day. Conspiracy, mad scientists, corrupt government and incredible chase scenes abound but how can you have a good thriller without them? Throw in a bit of science fiction and international intrigue and a dash of pre-history and you’ve got a wild few hours of pure entertainment ahead of you.

And, my goodness, what a heck of a twist at the end.

I quite simply love this book. There’s no question you have to suspend your disbelief but, hey, that’s what a great action adventure thriller is all about, isn’t it? I do have one grumble—I would really like to see Lynn and Adam again but Mr. Brannan says he doesn’t intend to have a sequel, at least, not anytime in the near future. Oh well, I’ll just have to look forward to his next book even if they won’t be there. I think the wait will be well worth it.

One last note—if you’re one of those readers who just has to peek at the end to see what’s going to happen, DON’T DO IT! I promise you’ll regret it because the last few pages will ruin the book for you. I’m not kidding.

This was a tough review to write, on the one had this is a debut novel and i tend to lean towards being easy on an authors first book. I really do think that a good author grows with every book they write. So the first is part of that learning process. On the other hand i need to be fair to those spending their cash.

This, in scope is by far the most ambitiously scoped story i have every read. To tell you the true scope would give too much away. Imagine all your conspiracy theories, myths, religions everything in one book. Yes it is that good. I was immensely impressed with the balls on this author covering this scope in his first book, and in a single book.

Did I have any issues?

Yes Matt Adams is too good for me, too fast, too tough, almost superhuman and this i think is intentional, I can live with that. I have read so many thrillers of this type, but I'm still a person who likes his kick ass hero to be a bit rougher around the edges and to show the bumps he picks up along the way. To show a level of reality /humanity. A great example is Andy McDermott's Nina Wilde and Eddie Chase, a pair who have lived through amazing levels of abuse and come out the other end. But Eddie wears his scars on his sleeve and keeps going despite them. Matt Adams is just indestructible.

So the big questions: Do I recommend it? & Should you buy it?

If you love a thriller, especially one that takes you to the edge of reality. Then yes i do recommend it and you should click the link and buy it, Same can be said if you love a well constructed story that covers myth after myth and enigma after enigma. At £4.33 less than a fiver for hours of fun, that's great value for anyone.

I enjoy including the occasional thriller in my reading, especially when I’m looking for a break from fantasy or horror. There are a couple of things that make an effective thriller for me. The narrative should have a fast pace as well as an intriguing premise that you can engage with. Finally, you should be able to jump straight into the action and don’t need to over think things too much.

Evelyn Edwards and Matt Adams are a good team. She has all the smarts, and he is a skilled tracker due to his native American heritage. The only thing I wasn’t sure about was the speed at which Matt manages to overcome his inner demons. There is quite a lot made of the fact that he has suffered greatly since the failure of his marriage, yet he seems to bounce back from this incredibly quickly. It’s a minor quibble I suppose, but it just struck me as a bit odd that he goes from worn-out shell to almost unstoppable tracker with skills bordering on the supernatural so quickly.

Brannan does successfully blend together a number of well-known conspiracy theories into his tale and they all fit together quite well. Everything from the notoriously secretive Bilderberg Group to the missing evolutionary missing link and true purpose behind Area 51 are all included in one form or another.

One of the things that appear to be the hallmark of many modern thrillers is the manipulation of science fact into something more resembling science fiction. Origin definitely contains elements of this phenomenon, personally I’m a fan of this approach. It’s fun to see genre mash-ups of this type occurring. The breakneck action in a thriller tends to lend itself well to science fiction, they’re a near perfect match.

Sometimes you need a story that is all about the thrill of the chase and doesn’t take itself too seriously, Origin delivers on this promise. The plot zips along at a fair rate of knots, and there are some great set pieces that keep the attention from flagging; a particularly thrilling chase scene involving a horse springs to mind. This story offers the kind of edge of your seat escapism that’s always great fun to read.

The novel’s final chapters veer off into full-on science fiction and I have to admit that this got my attention. I’m curious if there will be another novel featuring these characters, as things where left with the mother of all cliffhangers.

If you’ve ever read any novels by Steve Alten, Matthew Reilly or Scott Mariani, then you’ll likely as not enjoy Brannan’s work. His first novel is a lot of fun and very easy to lose yourself in.

This is a book that when you get to the end, you kick yourself for not seeing the pointers along the way that were so glaringly obvious in retrospect. Can't say more because that wouldn't be fair, but it *was* cleverly done.

Matthew Reilly meets Dan Brown. Now I adore Matthew Reilly's impossible plots and implausible action scenes because he does it so well. And I love Dan Brown's conspiracy theories, so I was set up to like this book.

We have action. As Lynn and Matt are running from the baddies, we have a lot of very implausible escapes and an awful lot of the book relies on the baddies being able to hook into every CCTV camera on the planet and track people by face-recognition software. After the set-up in the early pages with the discovery of a preserved homo sapiens body in ice that formed 40,000 years ago, I felt that there was a little too much action in the first half of the book - and not enough plot to hold it all together. But I kept reading and was rewarded by the ultimate conspiracy theory in the second half, although it's a shame that we had the typical Dr Evil telling our heroes the entire plot because he's going to kill them anyway ... and then they escape and know where they have to go to foil the plan.

A good read. I'd read more from this author.

This was not a terribly well written book, it tries to come off as Andy McNab meets The Thing and ends up as neither.
J T Brannan tries too hard to come across as convincingly writing an America set book but it comes across as too 'Garth Marenghi' if that makes sense, it just tries too g******* hard.
The characters aren't exactly well drawn, the female lead is described as having 'limpid pools' for eyes (spew!) despite being an award winning scientist. Having uncovered a plot by a higher echelon of society to snatch her Arctic dsicovery from her (by blowing up the helicopter she was in!!) you'd think she'd take better precautions than sending an email to her ex-services maverick American Indian boyfriend.
It reeks of Dan Brown (yawn!) but at least Brannan is a better writer. The best thing about this book is that it passed the time pleasantly for one night and hopefully whoever picks it up from the charity shop I took it to will feel the same.

První věta: "Lynn Edwardsová otevřela dveře základního tábora a vyšla ven, přímo do zmrzlého pekla."

Poslední věta: "A jak tak seděla na břehu řeky a jemně se dotýkala dítěte Matthewa Adamse, které jí rostlo v břiše, Evelyn Edwardsová nakonec všechno pochopila."

Good scifi plot but the main characters are too superhuman to be believable. I got a bit bored with their unending ability to escape detection by the professionals hunting them. The ending was just plain silly. But I guess the clue was in the names all along... Entertaining enough all in all.

Takovou bombou to celé ukončit. Ale vlastně to dává smysl. Tahle kniha byla jednoznačně jednou z nejlepších, jaké jsem z tohoto žánru, kdy četla.
