The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler by Connor Gunnin

Werner Stengel was a priest until his personal life caused him to be exiled by the priesthood. His passion for his motherland of Germany comes calling and sees him rise to status in the government alongside no other than Adolf Hitler. As time goes by Adolf's war aspirations concern Werner and he is convinced that Adolf is acting under a mirage of evil not entirely of his own doing. A group of others including his daughter Bruna have hatched a plan to kidnap the dictator and perform an exorcism to eradicate the beast within. Frantically they must solve a complex puzzle before Heinrich Himmler and the SS find their location.

It is a fascinating concept of whether or not Adolf was controlled by otherworldly beings. Could it be possible? Is there more to a person, is he a mere puppet to a larger game? Perhaps a person is just plain evil to the core. He is here to inflict as much carnage and pain as possible to fulfill his earthly desires. Certainly, most individuals have a difficult time understanding the narcissism that goes into those types of thoughts but one has to wonder, where do these inherent thoughts come from? Mr. Gunnin has written a novel that asks this very question and delves into a bleak world where perhaps thoughts and ideas are not of our choosing. Selling yourself to the devil so to speak. Humorously I would love to bottle this up and use it on occasion to get me out of trouble with my wife, "the devil made me do it!"

Ultimately I suppose your interest in this book depends upon whether you have an interest in the Third Reich or you love a great horror, something akin to The Exorcist. I am enthralled with both subjects so for me, I give this a solid 4 out of 5 stars⭐ Highly recommended!

Three and a half stars.

The title makes it quite clear what the novel is about, but it doesn’t say anything about how well the author develops the story. A very accomplished debut novel.

Chilling and thought-provoking is a good way to describe Connor Gunnin’s historical fiction, thriller, “The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler”. The story takes place in Germany, 1938, before the beginning of WWII. The author does a good job of laying out how children were programmed to Nationalism, and Nazism with propaganda and racist ads. Young Bruna, whose father is one of Hitler’s interior Ministers, is chosen to be part of film for the government and actually gets to meet the charismatic Fuhrer. This chance meeting solidifies her respect and adulation for Adolf Hitler. Spring ahead 4 years and the war is on, when a group of SS soldiers led by none other than Bruna’s father, who is one of Hitler’s right hand men but was previously a Catholic priest, believe the evil leader may be possessed by demons. This idea probably crossed many minds, as we are loath to believe that kind of destructive evil can be inherent in a human being. Needless to say Bruna is integral to the outcome of this theory when her father kidnaps the Fuhrer with the intent of exorcising his demons. Recommended.

description

History’s two notorious leaders (read: cold-blooded mass murderers), namely Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin share certain common things, besides their obvious similarity in instituting a reign of death and terror: religious rumor has it that the devil possessed both. Believe it or not, but certain allegations are tied to their names – that Satan himself ruled these men. For some, that would accurately explain why they were so masterfully evil in their quest for power.

That’s the theme that Connor Gunnin explores in The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler. Offering a what-if scenario of Hitler’s dominion by a demon, Gunnin masterfully creates a haunting yet thrilling narrative from the very first page of the book.

One of the things I loved in The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler is Werner Stengel’s moral struggle and dilemma; his efforts to don a priest’s gray robes over his politician’s suit to prevent an upcoming war were applaudable. Throughout the book, Stengel remains torn between his sense of duty to Germany and his love for his daughter, Bruna; all the while he tries not to get arrested for his attempt at exorcism.

The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler deals with adult themes of graphic violence, war, and horror. The first couple of chapters had more of a cozy gothic feel for me, with the ancient Falkenhayn Castle nestled deep in the Black Forest, the candle-lit exorcism room, and an air of haunting mystery. But when the horror elements do unleash by the middle of the book, you feel a chill creep up your neck and goosebumps on your arms, and then it doesn’t stop there, dear reader, it only gets better and better – and more frightening.

I also loved Gunnin’s writing style and how he portrays the questioning within the characters’ minds. Is the charismatic führer rotten from the inside? Are his wicked views on Jews and war truly his own, or do these rather belong to a supernatural villainous entity? And if Hitler should be disposed of, is a bullet through the head much more effective than a purifying exorcism? Especially since Hilter hadn’t moved towards war by then, and there were only signs of it on the horizon. As a reader, you will find questions in your mind similar to these the characters found themselves asking throughout the book.

If you love historical fiction with a touch of horror and politics, you will easily be enchanted with this one. The characters are well-done, each with a story you will relate to. The atmosphere is haunting, and one of impending doom, so you know the characters are screwed up from the very start. The plot is thought-provoking and intriguing. Overall, I couldn’t have read a great historical book at the start of 2024.

Highly recommended for fans of provocative historical fiction and The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler will take you on an eerie intellectual journey, and leave you awestruck, and gasping for breath.

Connor Gunnin’s The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler is an ambitious and audacious exploration of evil, morality, and redemption set during the tumultuous days leading up to World War II. Blurring the lines between historical fiction and supernatural horror, the novel imagines a scenario where Adolf Hitler is possessed by a demonic force, and a small group of individuals embarks on a perilous journey to exorcise him. Anchored in meticulous research and a deep understanding of history, Gunnin’s narrative boldly tackles complex themes of responsibility, free will, and the nature of evil.

The story centers on Werner Stengel, a former Catholic priest turned high-ranking Nazi official, who risks everything to orchestrate Hitler’s capture and subsequent exorcism. As the narrative unfolds, readers are introduced to an eclectic cast of characters, including the enigmatic Brother Jürgen and the determined Bruna Stengel, Werner’s daughter. The tension is palpable as the group navigates both the physical dangers of the Nazi regime and the spiritual warfare within Hitler himself. Gunnin’s portrayal of Hitler as an inherently evil human, thus allowing him to become a vessel of malevolence, leaves room for thought-provoking debates about personal accountability and the origins of evil. However, the narrative also emphasizes that the demon Astaroth did not so much as create Hitler’s antisemitism or warmongering tendencies but rather exploited traits that already existed within him. For example, Stengel realizes that “the demons weren’t the source of his evil,” and that Hitler was chosen because he was already a warmonger and anti-Semite. This distinction effectively balances the delicate premise by ensuring that the possession narrative does not completely absolve Hitler of responsibility for his actions, including the war and the Holocaust. Instead, the story suggests that Hitler’s inner darkness was amplified but not created by external forces, keeping the accountability firmly with him as an individual. The book navigates this theme thoughtfully while maintaining its fictional exploration of evil.

Readers will appreciate the novel’s richly atmospheric settings, from the foreboding Falkenhayn Castle to the shadowy depths of the Black Forest. Gunnin’s prose is vivid and immersive, capturing both the grandeur and horror of the era. The pacing is deliberate, building suspense with each chapter as the stakes grow higher. While some may find the philosophical discussions and theological underpinnings dense at times, these elements enhance the story’s depth and gravitas.

The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler will appeal to fans of speculative historical fiction and readers drawn to morally complex narratives. Those who enjoy works like Robert Harris’s Fatherland or Guillermo del Toro’s dark, fantastical tales will find Gunnin’s novel equally compelling. With its daring premise and thought-provoking execution, this book is a chilling and unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness.

As an avid horror reader, I found this to be a satisfyingly gripping and scary novel and look forward to seeing what else Connor Gunnin writes in future. Strangely, I found the opening chapter to be one of the most taut and suspenseful parts of the book, where it seems the stakes are actually the lowest. But I think this is because the beginning of the book is the most realistic part of the book - where a troupe of teenage dancing girls is performing for a reel that will help normalize the use of gas masks for German citizens. The troupe is visited by Hitler himself and he immediately takes an interest in 14-year-old Bruna, who will later become an integral player in his exorcism. Just seeing Hitler in this everyday interaction was rather chilling.

The idea of Hitler being demonically possessed and a group of concerned and pious SS members kidnapping him to perform an exorcism may seem ‘wrong’ at first… isn’t the man just evil without the need for possession? But this book takes a theme similar to Stephen King’s novel ‘It,’ whereby the evil entity is a companion for and preying on what is already evil. In ‘It,’ Pennywise, King’s monster, is drawn to heinous acts and morally despicable people, as the same can be said for the demon(s) in this fictitious take on the time period. Speaking of King, the depictions of the demons reminded me a lot of one of my favorite King novels, ‘Lisey’s Story,’ where the monster with the piebald side called Longboy forever haunts the backs of my eyelids! It evoked a very similar feeling when I read the frightening descriptions of Gunnin’s demons when they manifested either as inky shadows or horned beasts or bulbous-headed monsters. The settings really added to the atmosphere, too - an ancient, dark castle, the Black Forest, cities where citizens fear the rising power of the government.

There’s no happy ending here, as Gunnin doesn’t create a tale with an alternate history. The same tragedies will eventually come to pass when the exorcism is said and done (and the author explains this in the forward), but it’s a good novel for horror-lovers and those interested in WWII history.

“The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler,” by Connor Gunnin, is a fascinating historical fiction horror tale! We first meet the MC, Bruna Stengel, when she is 14, and a dancer. She and her group are making a promotional film for the government. Stengel’s father, a former priest, is a nazi and a prominent member of government. Bruna has a brief meeting with the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, who observes the filmmaking, and she is mesmerized by his magnetic presence. She is the ideal nazi female, eager to be of service in some way to her country and her leader.
We next meet Bruna four years later, when she is 18. Her father has brought her to a castle in a remote part of the country. She senses that something is afoot, and there is a dearth of servants in the large castle. No one, including her father, will reveal a clue of what is to come. Then her father shows up at the castle with a prisoner, a man with a cloth sack over his head. The man is brought in the castle. Bruna is horrified to learn the captive is none other than Adolf Hitler. Had her father gone mad?
Mr. Gunnin’s writing is rich and descriptive; it is compelling even though it relies heavily upon narration. One quibble I have is that I should have liked to see a more gradual attraction between Bruna and the handsome young SS officer rather than an instant one. Nevertheless, the story is taut and interesting throughout, even though the ultimate result, the true horrors, were already known.

I recently had the spine-tingling experience of delving into The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler and I must say, it's a chilling and well written book.

Gunnin's ability to intertwine historical events with the supernatural is well done. From the very first page, I found myself immersed in a world where the horrors of Nazi Germany are amplified by the presence of demonic forces. The tension builds steadily as Werner Stengel and his loyal team embark on a daring mission to exorcise Hitler himself, whose descent into darkness is portrayed with bone-chilling realism. Every scene is infused with an eerie sense of foreboding, keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout. The blend of horror and historical fiction is executed with such finesse that it's impossible not to be captivated by the story. The concept of Hitler being demonically possessed may seem taboo at first, but Gunnin handles it with a deft touch, creating a narrative that is both thought-provoking and terrifying. Furthermore, the attention to historical detail is commendable. Gunnin's research shines through in every chapter, lending authenticity to the story without ever sacrificing pacing or suspense.

Gunnin has crafted a tale that is as intellectually stimulating as it is viscerally terrifying. If you're a fan of horror fiction that pushes boundaries and challenges conventions, do yourself a favor and pick up this book.

Connor Gunnin's debut novel, "The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler," is a riveting journey that grips the audience from start to finish. Through the eyes of characters like a father and daughter navigating newfound revelations about each other, a caretaker with a hidden past, and a skeptic questioning their beliefs, Gunnin intricately weaves a tale of suspense and redemption. Set against the backdrop of being hunted by Nazi soldiers, the characters grapple with the weighty responsibility of saving millions of lives.

Gunnin employs tactful flashbacks to provide crucial insight and context, enriching the narrative with depth and complexity. Themes of morality, redemption, and the nature of evil permeate the story, prompting readers to contemplate profound questions about humanity.

The author's masterful prose, filled with vivid descriptions and palpable tension, keeps readers on the edge of their seats throughout. However, it's the richly developed characters, each wrestling with their own inner demons and moral quandaries, that truly elevate this novel. "The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler" challenges readers to confront the darkest aspects of human nature while offering a glimmer of hope for redemption.

For fans of historical fiction and supernatural thrillers, Gunnin's debut is a must-read, promising an immersive and thought-provoking experience.

Is the Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler, demonically possessed? Is there something worse than “human evil” at play in Nazi Germany? This is the idea behind Connor Gunnin’s, The Exorcism of Adolf Hitler. This story takes place on and around March 12, 1938, coinciding with Anschluss and before the official start date of WWII. Bruna is the daughter of the Interior Minister for the Nazi party and former Catholic priest. She has been indoctrinated to the Nazi way of life as most “Hitler Youth”. But Bruna dreams of much more than that. Whilst visiting the remote Falkenhayn Castle, Bruna sees her father and other SS officers arrive at the castle in bullet-ridden cars and bleeding. They are acting strangely and have two prisoners covered in burlap sacks. He has abducted Hitler with the intention of “exorcising” his demons before releasing him. According to history, we all know that this did not work out as they hoped. Interesting concept, except for the known spoiler. However, even though it’s historical fiction, the idea that a Nazi Minister would allow his daughter to be present for this covert operation of kidnapping and religious purification of the Führer is a little hard to swallow.

As an atheist, I don’t believe in good and evil as entities or forces of darkness and light that are capable of influencing man. People choose to be either good or bad because they want to be this way. There is nothing on either side fighting to gain the upper hand. I’m also uncomfortable with the notion that it was evil as an entity – a demon – that influenced Hitler, and in a way, this justifies the terrible things he did. In truth, he did it because he'd failed at everything else and he blamed everyone but himself. He was that inadequate.
However, I suspended my disbelief, and I got into this story about the possession and exorcism of Adolph Hitler.
It’s a well-written, well-researched, gripping tale of a handful of people who see him for what he is and, rather than kill him – because that would make him a martyr – they attempt to exorcise the demon from him and prevent a terrible war, and the even more terrible extermination of a race of people.
Did they manage it? Well, if it had been attempted in real life history tells us they didn’t, but within the confines of this novel…
I don’t give away spoilers, so I suggest you read it to find out.

As someone well-educated in the horrors perpetrated by the Nazi regime, I went into this book with a certain trepidation. I’m happy to say that, from the outset, my hesitation was allayed by a story that has been well-researched and that captures the pre-war fervour that existed in Germany at that time. Obviously, given the subject matter, a leap of the imagination is required, but my worry that this story would trivialise one the most heinous chapters in human history proved unfounded as I read to the end. As the title suggests, the story concerns the kidnapping of The Fuhrer prior to the outbreak of war by Werner Stengel, who is ostensibly a German patriot and former Catholic priest, with the intent of ridding Hitler of the demon that he believes threatens destruction and mass-murder. The plot also concerns his daughter, Bruna, who is equally enthralled and terrified by their captive.
Eerie and atmospheric in places, and action-packed in others, it is a well-crafted story different from the usual horror tropes regarding exorcism. A mix of religion, history and horror, I would recommend to anyone interested in this subject matter.

Was Adolph Hitler possessed? Is it possible? How could one man be so cruel and so hypnotically charming that he nearly destroyed the world? This is written as a horror story and I know the idea of possession and exorcism has been around for a long time and one can either believe or disbelieve, but this book has a ring of truth. The author must have done some research on exorcism as well as done a lot of research on this time in German history.
Every horror story needs spooky characters and who could be more terrifying than Hitler and Himmler? The book had me turning pages late at night and finding myself invested in what would happen to the characters. It made me apprehensive because I knew that the ending of the book, and the fate of everyone, would have to match what happened historically. I didn’t see how the author could give it a realistic ending.
In the end, it was managed with a surprising twist.
All in all, I liked the story and I like the writing style. If you enjoy a good, scary story, with some history, try this one. You won’t be sorry.

It takes a chilling leap into the realm of the supernatural, offering a unique perspective on the horrors of World War II. It takes place in 1938 where tensions are high and the war seems inevitable. A small group of friends dares to try something unthinkable: exorcise a demon from Adolf Hitler. The narrative follows Werner Stengel, a former priest now tangled with the Nazi party. Witnessing Hitler's rise, he begins to suspect that a darker force may be at play behind the scenes. This book is more than just a horror story. It blends historical fiction with supernatural elements, creating a suspenseful, immersive, and thought-provoking reading experience. The author's research shines through, bringing wartime Germany to life with extreme accuracy. Readers should keep in mind, however, that the book tackles disturbing themes and graphic horror. However, for those who enjoy a good scare and a fresh perspective on history, this book delivers more than expected.

This story explores a creative blend of history and horror, presenting readers with a creepy what-if scenario that I found to be both disturbing and addictive. Without giving any spoilers away, this book is as the title suggests – it presents the possibility that perhaps Hitler was not “human evil” but rather, was demonically possessed.

Gunnin did a great job at both world and character building. I also thought the mix of history with horror was really unique and only added to the world building. I could definitely see reading this around Halloween with the lights dimmed in order to be thoroughly creeped out and I could also most definitely see this being on the big screen someday.

This is the first book I have read from this author and I must say this was quite a pretty great read for those that enjoy thrillers and retold history.

The story follows on protagonist Bruna Stengel an ex priest and her father Werner Stengel a minister as they visit the Falkenhayn Castle. They find out that adolf hitler had been kidnapped to find out if he is being demonically possessed. However, things take an unexpected turn as they find out more about the exorcize.

This story is quite a unique blend of fiction and horror and it reminds me a lot of the Twilight zone. I enjoy reading this thriller and I must say this story greatest strengths lie in its fast paced storytelling, dialogue, and narrative storytelling on history.

This was such a great, fantastic, horrifying read and I would like to read more from this author.
