One year ago, Mercy was the victim of a brutal attack. Now, she faces a new threat that lurks in the shadows of her fear, and there’s no one to trust.
Secrets begin to reveal themselves to Mercy, and she’s thrown into a haunting, supernatural world. Vampires, witches, and werewolves roam the land, and as newfound power grows within her, Mercy must decide where her heart and strength lie. To become a warrior and fight the monsters who thirst for her blood, or to open her heart to love and the man in her dreams—visions of her past life she doesn’t remember.
I’ve always had a passion for creative writing, with a particular focus on poetry during my younger years. One night, after having a vivid dream, I was inspired to pick up a pen and write my debut novel, The Dark Awakening.
When I’m not writing, I enjoy reading, spending time with my husband and two children, attending rock concerts, and exploring new restaurants in Denver.
I dream of continuing to create exciting novels for my readers and taking them on a journey through the magical realms that spill from the pages of my books.
I was so excited to read this, but it turned out to be a huge let-down. All of the characters were super flat, if the mc was to be murdered at any moment, I would not feel a thing. The main character was a complete Mary Sue, and honestly, so was everyone else. All of the “plot twists” I saw a mile away, and nothing really surprised or intrigued me in this story.
The romance was just not done right. I don’t want to include any spoilers, but the supposed love interest caused a great deal of pain to the mc. And all she could say was “I CAN’T SEE YOU TODAY.” LIKE WHAT EVEN, if something like that happened to me I would’ve been furious and not want to see the person for an ETERNITY. I know that the mc was in a unique situation, but it still didn’t make it right, and she was so easy to forgive. And even more than that, all she could say about anyone in the novel is “OH HE’S SO HOT BUT TERRIBLE.” LIKE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS GIRL. The main love interest (I honestly have no clue if this was a love triangle or not, this book was that confusing and a bunch of love interests were introduced last minute) constantly kissed the mc with no regard for her comfort and she just went along with it even though she “hates” him. I wouldn’t call this novel a romance, even though it did try and focus on the aspect a lot, because it was really just a haphazard attempt at inserting a bunch of kissing and memories of “love.”
I wish I could say that I liked or disliked a character, but I was so unattached to this book that I just did not care about anyone. This novel really did feel like I was reading about characters who had no emotions, robots at that, and I did not like it whatsoever. I was told that the mc was angry, I was not shown her frustration with the world itself. This story is in first person but I felt very detached to the main character and everyone else. Also, this was one of those novels where the bad guys were solely “bad” for the sake of being villains. They cackled and had dark backstories and were evil with no actual motive. I really don’t like it when characters are this bland and nothing was really memorable about this book. The main character acted very immature, and the whole “chosen one” trope has been done a MILLION TIMES. I’m sick of seeing it in novels, a simple Mary Sue becomes almighty in a matter of seconds and then says “OH, I ALWAYS KNEW I WAS SPECIAL, DEEP DOWN INSIDE.” I just can’t. Tropes can be done right, but this one was not.
The writing was not my cup of tea, and I found myself losing focus as I tried to read this novel. I started in the morning yesterday, and took hour-long breaks because I couldn’t continue. In the end, I forced myself to read through and was disappointed but not surprised. This is a solid 1.5 stars, and originally I rated it as a 2 stars, but as time passed, I realized that this novel was more of a 1 star. It was problematic in certain areas and honestly the only thing I liked about it is the lack of grammatical errors. There was also a cliffhanger at the end that captured my attention, which is good, but doesn’t make up for the entirety of the novel which was bland, boring, and poorly written.
Review copy provided by the publisher and booksirens in exchange for an honest review.
Audiobook re-read. The Dark Awakening is really good as an audio listen. The narrator is engaging and it enhances the pace. 4/4.5 stars.
Mercy doesn’t like to be touched. Not even by her best friend who is in love with her. The events in her past haunt her. Unfortunately for her, she’s running out of time. Her past and future are about to collide. Everyone has secrets but what if you couldn’t remember yours?
Caleb is a stranger. One who seems to be there when she needs someone, but maybe there is something more about him. Could he hold all the answers or more questions?
Mercy finds it hard to trust, but wouldn’t you if your mum turned on you? Mercy is a powerful witch and her awakening is coming. It is something she can stop. Her mother’s betrayal is about to cut even deeper. The problem is who can you trust when everyone has secrets?
The dark awakening has some good twist points and the world created promises for more. This is the start of a series. This is a suspense novel which will keep you guessing. This is only the beginning. With 3 books in the series this offers a paranormal world with mystery, adventure and potential romance.
#1Competitionwinner #Audiobook ARC in exchange for an honest review for the audio copy.
I’m giving this 4.5 stars only because Mercy was a little annoying in some scenes. i seriously got irritated with her character on the scenes where she already learned she’s part of the Coven. But overall? I love the story! I loved how it focused on the explanation of her history and the present and the future that she and the other witches are expected to do. Although there are some scenes about love but its not too hyped in the story. I enjoyed this so much! If only i didn’t have other things to do in between my readings i would finish this in one sitting 😳
Would recommend and i cannot wait for the next book!!! I really enjoyed this one! And its a super fast read 😱

To slay a monster; you might need to become a monster.
What a story! I loved it! Kept me reading deep into the night! I was really drawn in by the writing from the first instance. And it's action packed. Which I loved. A lot. It started out as something, but turned completely into something else. The wow factor did not escape me. This book is an absolute must-read, it kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I can not wait for the next book.
I won this book from Goodreads (Kindle version) for an honest review.
I could not put this book down this was a book of great story telling. The characters are well written, the scenery so real and fresh. The story itself is original and new. I thouroughly enjoyed this story and found it to be a page turner. It is rare to find a new story line in this genre. However, I feel this author has touched on a fresh concept here and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
The Dark Awakening is a A Paranormal Vampire Series (Second Edition). The novel is full of mystery and secrets and I love reading such type of stories.
There are some good twist and turns in the story. It is a story about trust issues being faced by Mercy who also possesses some magical powers. Mercy has never quite fit into her life but when her own mother attempts to kill her, she struggles to deal with the after effects and the fact that her life begins changing at a rapid rate. Decisions she makes can mean life or death of not only herself, but of everyone around her. She has now become the hunted. She needs to find a way to concentrate on doing what is right without hurting anyone but if it will help her in the end remains to be seen. The world building and character development is fantastic.
D L Blade is the author of this series and she is known as the vampire diary queen as she has written fiction stories about Vampires. Her writing is full of adventure and mystery and I totally enjoyed her work.
I would never in a million years have guessed that this is Blade’s debut novel because it’s done right and it’s done well. The reader gets to know the main character and her world pretty well before she discovers she’s a witch and witches, vampires, etc. are real. Even before she discovers life isn’t what she thought it was, her life’s fairly complicated so there’s never a dull moment.
Character development is fantastic with advanced characters throughout, who are complex and true to themselves. Mercy’s world, as a character, is well done as well. Plenty of things readers can easily relate to, despite the paranormal aspect.
Continuity is on point; you won’t find yourself questioning anything, yet might still find yourself surprised by a few details before you’re through.
Editing/proofing are well done, no issues to distract from the reading experience.
Overall - This is a really great book to get lost in. I found myself missing it horribly when I’d step away, as it really sucked me in. There are characters you’ll love, find yourself rooting for, and maybe one or two you’ll love to hate. I was really invested, and found myself trying to figure out whether I trusted some of them. I also didn’t predict the outcome of this book, and I predict EVERYthing I watch and read. For one thing, I was too engrossed in the moment, to make predictions, but there also was a twist I didn’t see coming. It was executed perfectly in a way that made me absolutely need more, without being a cliffhanger.
I rarely rate anything 5 stars these days, but that’s because anyone is rarely able to hold my attention that well AND surprise me so… I’m going to go ahead and call this one: 5 stars.
Lets start with how the story was written. It was clear, smooth and superb! Everything was direct to the point and you fast paced! The way they build the whole universe for this story was fantastic, you can feel that you are part of it and you can see the characters movements. (Like, I can still feel Caleb's eyes looking at me as if I am Mercy. God!😂). . The whole plot was also splendid! At first I thought that its just the ordinary teenage girl who lives in a life full of lies and who will lead a rebellion full of beautiful creatures! But yeah boy! I was so wrong! Mercy indeed will lead a coven of witches however, she's more than that, she's also a protector, a saviour (she and the whole story saved me from the reading slump!). The twist was also unexpected (the whole story was unexpected!). Every pages has something to tell, every scene will make you crazy, every chapters will make you crave for more! . For the characters I would like to give them a hug. They are so relatable (Well, except for the powers that they have. 😂). I love each and every one of them, the development of every persona and how they fight the battle that they have. I just hate Mercy's decision sometimes! And I hate her because she got Caleb, Riley and Dorian! 😂 . For a debut novel DL Blade did a great job. We should watch out for her name and her next novels. All in all it was a great journey. A beautiful story. 😍 I've never been this satisfied but I'm still craving or more. I cant wait for the 2nd book. . 5/5 stars . *All of the contents that you read in this review are true and non bias. Indeed the book was given to me for free but it will never have an effect or an impact about review and rating that I give. Thank you.*
I received this kindle e-book through a Goodreads Giveaway. It was a paranormal suspense book with some interesting plot twists and turns. There are secrets, witches, vampires, werewolves, romance and more combined in a suspense novel that does have a cliff hanger. Overall, this was an enjoyable book with an original story line. The book was well written and kept me engaged throughout. It is more geared to a YA audience but older readers can enjoy it too.
Wow what an amazing read! I was sent this by the author for an honest review. I cannot stop thinking about this book. Such a fantastic cast of characters, and an amazing plot and story. The ending left me breathless and i cannot wait to read book 2 in the series!
Book: The Dark Awakening (The Chosen Coven Book 1) Author: D.L. Blade Rating: 4.5 Stars Reviewer: emmasromanticreviews17 on Facebook Note: I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in a fantastic paranormal series. It is full of witches, vampires, demons and werewolves. This book will pull you in to a whole new world and leave you craving so much more. You are guaranteed to be taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as you dive further into this fantastic paranormal world.
Up until recently Mercy’s life was completely normal. Her best friends Shannon and Cami are cheerleaders along with Mercy and they are popular at school. Riley is her best friend and has had feelings for Mercy for a long time but they are taking things slowly. Until one day Mercy’s life is turned upside down when her mum tries to kill her and everything changes. She goes to live with her Aunt Lily but is left crippled with anxiety, struggling to allow anyone near and refuses to let Riley touch her. She is trying to hold on until she graduates in two weeks’ time. Meanwhile, her nights are stolen by a gorgeous boy who she cannot stop dreaming of, but she is falling in love with him the more she sees.
After feeling like she is constantly being followed Mercy ends up in a car accident and is pulled out by a gorgeous young guy who doesn’t stick around long afterwards. But what is equally as strange is that Mercy was sure the car accident resulted in her leg being broken, and yet by the times she realises the boy has left, she doesn’t even have a scratch on him. When the mystery man finally introduces himself as Caleb he opens Mercy’s eyes to a whole world that she didn’t even know exists.
Mercy discovers that she is a witch, but not just any, she is a Chosen One. In the past an angel blessed five families in Salem with a child who could wield their family element of earth, air, water, fire or spirit, better than anyone. Then other witches could draw strength from the Chosen ones. Their destiny is to band together as a coven and become immortal to give witches their power for all eternity. But before they could be joined as immortal Mercy died leaving the coven incomplete. Caleb, another Chosen One, has loved Mercy for centuries and will stop at nothing to bring her back. He tried with all of her past blood relatives but was not able to succeed until now.
Mercy’s mother knew her child was a powerful old soul and promised to raise Mercy and teach her how to harness her powers. Caleb promised to stay away until her 18th birthday, which is when a witch comes into their true powers, as it is not safe for a child to have that level of power. But Mercy’s mum could feel the power and that became addictive until she decided to keep the powers. But when Mercy experiences her awakening on her 18th birthday her mum will automatically lose the powers as they return to Mercy. So her mum will go to extreme lengths to make sure the awakening doesn’t happen.
Not only does Mercy have a whole new world and a murderous mother to live with, there is also vampires, werewolves, her current human life and a whole set of past memories to deal with. Mercy has to figure out who she was and who she is now, then work out how to combine that to make her someone strong enough to defeat the evil that is rising.
But on top of all the supernatural drama runs a very normal teenage love story, or rather a love triangle. Mercy has been in love with Caleb for years but in the past their parents objected to their relationship and they had to stop seeing each other. Caleb obeyed their parents and didn’t fight for Mercy. The same day this happens she meets a young, gorgeous vampire called Dorian, who also happens to be the guy who is haunting modern Mercy’s dreams. Dorian is kind and loving and he does not want to be a vampire. The more time that they spend together the more they fall in love and it develops into a strong and powerful love. But in this lifetime, Mercy is confused by her feelings and is unsure who she loves or who she should choose. She feels like her job in this life is to keep her loved ones safe and rid the world of the evil that threatens them. But can she do this and fall in love at the same time?
Overall, I really loved this book. It is very different from what I normally read but its dark, dangerous and gripping. As new characters, species and timelines are introduced, it is done in a very impressive way. Sometimes when reading paranormal books it is difficult to follow the plot and character species, but not this book. The writing style is clever and easy to follow. The characters are interesting and thoroughly unique. It is very clear there are more books in the series and this book ending definitely sets up the start of the next book. But I still finished the book with my mouth wide open in shock and I cannot wait to read the next book. I am sure it will be a fantastic sequel but this book has set an extremely high standard for it to follow.
Witches, vampires, werewolves, what more could I want? I love the supernatural, I love getting lost in a fast paced story with compelling characters or meandering my way through slow paced, character driven, world heavy tome. This book sadly doesn't belong in either category.
There is an attempt to give our characters history (all tragic) but it falls flat and is hollow at best. Our main character is the typical Mary Sue but she is incredibly bland and one dimensional.
The story overall was disappointing and not incredibly original. It felt more like a first draft than a complete novel. I'm not interested in reading the rest of the series.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
I love a good paranormal book and i have to say this was so much more than good, From page 1 i really enjoyed this and i liked Mercy as a character, she felt real to me and Diana did such a great job writing her. Caleb drove me crazy lol i wanted to punch him for how he was being. Over the story was great and flowed so well there wasn't any part i didn't like and i cannot wait to read more.
First of all, I loved this book! It was such a quick read (which are my favorite kinds). I was sucked into the plot from page one and couldn't get enough of this story. It was stunning to think this was D.L. Blades first novel. Her writing is fabulous. I loved the clear picture that was painted of the life of Mercy. The descriptions and language of the book flowed making this such a fantastic story. There were so many plot twists and don’t even get me started on the love triangle. I highly recommend reading this book. It is worth it!
If your definitely into paranormal reads then this is the book for you! Scratch that, this is the series for you. It’s a good quick read that will keep you wanting more. That’s the only downside, there are only three books. I’m hoping the story continues as I’m not ready to let go of the characters just yet.
This was an interesting, exciting and engaging book with an incredible amount of stuff happening. I had high expectations for some reason, and the author did not disappoint. This is a new author and I loved her so much that I added her to my favourites immediately. The author's writing is really good, complex, and full of new ideas. There is an epic ending, complex plot, and the author explores human relationships and self sacrifice, as well as repercussions of selfish actions/choices and bad decisions. The main character not lovable immediately but because of her growth, selflessness, determination and inner strength, Mercy makes you love her. She starts as a typical young woman, clueless of the alternative world around her, and grows into a strong, skilled warrior with a purpose. She also lives through hell in the process. There are several interesting characters next to her. One is mysterious Dorian, who is lovable and amazing, and I have a feeling the author will bring him forth more in the next book. Then there is Caleb, whose intentions are good but the way he goes about realising them is all kinds of wrong. I did not like him from the start and I am still hoping he will come to his senses in the next book. As I mentioned already, so much happens in this book. The author develops the world and characters and sets the scene for continuation. The ending was quite shocking, and I loved it so much. Mainly because of Caleb's reaction and the turning point in Mercy's life. I immediately started reading the next book. Can't wait to see what happens next. The story continues in The Dark Underworld.
Welcome to East Greenwich a town where the town is riddled with secrets . Mercy is surviving after being attacked by her mother and almost dying . Where a mysterious man is on the fringe keeping her safe . After Mercy is in a horrible accident her mystery man saves her and changes her life and finally sets straight the dreams that Mercy has . But when she finds out her past she has to work through the lies . betrayal and the evil forces that are trying to take her and kill her . Will they survive . For a debut novel I will say the characters are well written and are beginning to be complex. Mercy is a typical teenager who just graduated and is turning eighteen. But there is more to Mercy and as you read you watch her grow and become a strong kick butt character . She has a tough time figuring out who her friends are after she finds out she is a witch and vampire hunter. Now Caleb well there is something about him that you just don't trust . He is cute arrogant and so mysterious . You really want to club him every now and then . There is a reason why he is like this and we find out more about him as you read into the story. We also meet Mercy's friends who keep her grounded more and more . I love Riley he has been through so much but is there for Mercy when she really needs him . You will like him too and want to wrap him up in a blanket and hug him tight . This debut novel takes us on an adventure ride that will keep you turning the pages . I truly enjoyed this book and loved all the characters . But I did feel that the first part of the book dragged just a little with lots of info and it did take a little bit to really get into the book and the characters . Over all that didn't take away from the story line at all . I got swept away at the last part and it moved really fast . I will say there is a cliff hanger at the end of the book and you will shed a tear at what her and Caleb do go through and what she did to keep herself and everyone else safe . You will enjoy this book as much as your teen will . So if you want an enjoyable story of witches, vampires and yes there are werewolves in this story as well . Check out Mercy and her make shift coven and see what happens . A great story for your Christmas present list . You will not be disappointed .
If you like romantic plots that are kind of messy, this book is for you. I found the constant choices between all the guys for Mercy to be sort of long-suffering and a little dull, but I'm not big on overarching romantic plots.
What I did like, however, and why I rate this book highly: is the plot. The Salem Witch plot is something I have always found overdone and, frankly, a little irritating, but D.L Blades spin on this left me wanting more. There are so many players in this book and people beyond the shadows pulling Mercy's strings that it left me hungry for more.
I really wish the plot would've been focused on more instead of making Caleb a cocky romantic interest. He was much more interesting as a mysterious love from Mercy's past where they couldn't be together. Then, when Dorian showed up I was more than happy to entertain some romantic subplot, but eventually, that too became a huge pain point for me.
There were a lot of times I ended up being pulled out of the narrative by choppy or short sentences or phrases that made me stop and pulled me out of the story, but the nuggets of intense prose and excellent writing pulled me back in. Though I will say this, I wish the plot with Mercy's mother had gotten more attention. I felt like that got resolved a little too easily.
Plus, there was a lot of slut-shaming and bullying of girls not in the character's immediate friend group and that really turns me off in a lot of books. I stuck through it, however, and I'm glad I did.
Let's talk about the ending. I won't spoil anything for anyone reading my review, but I will say that the ending was AMAZING. When I read it I immediately knew I was going to read the second book in the series. So I have to say I'm very interested in where this series is going.
Wow, This was an intense story from beginning to end. It had all of the elements to keep me engaged. I love visiting the PNR world and this story has witches, vampires, werewolves and demons (oh my!).
Mercy and her friends learn that there is much more to the world then what they originally believed which then makes them question everything. This is a great start to a series that I hope will continue. Mercy has a deep rooted strength and is determined to continue her life's supernatural goal. I will be on the lookout for the next installment, I have an interest in seeing how it all comes together.
This book was absolutely fantastic. Probably one of my new favorites. I couldn't put this book down. Normally I can pick out my favorite part from a book, but this one I can't since the whole thing was just an amazing read.
East Greenwich may be a small town, but it is riddled with secrets. Mercy knows this more than most – she still suffers from the scars. The trauma from the ultimate betrayal has caused her to keep her distance from everyone she holds dear. A stranger who lingers in her subconscious seems to be the exception to the rule. His comfort is a refreshing distraction from her tormented fears.
Unbeknownst to her; the past is weaving its dark web, waiting to strike. Upon a startling car accident, Mercy is shocked to find that her enigmatic mystery man, Caleb, is real – and she belongs to him. He reveals that Mercy’s family is strongly linked to an ancient coven; the roots slowly dragging her back to Salem again.
There may be a spark between Mercy and Caleb, but she is torn between wanting to kiss him – and running from him. Evil forces are awakening, growing bloodthirsty as the days and nights pass. Mercy must Awaken the dormant powers inside her, tackle the lies, betrayal, and blood-drenched past lives rotating around her in never-ending cycles. Can she bear the burden? Will she find it in herself to trust Caleb despite the shadowy past?
To slay a monster; you might need to become a monster.
My review is based on the audioook. As a first in series this book did a great job laying the groundwork and introducing the reader to the characters. The narrator did well bringing the story to life. I would like more character depth but overall this was a good start of series
Plenty of action and adventure. Plot between the 2 main characters seemed a little rushed though. I would be interested in the other characters lives too.

This book will take you on a ride of a life time with darkness and light fighting at every corner with twists and turns you are not expecting, page after page will keep you up wondering what will happen next. D.L. Blade has done an amazing job with it. Wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
The Dark Awakening came out earlier this month (October 2018) and is D. L. Blade's premiere in the writing world! I personally feel like October was a great month for this month to come out during because it's got elements you think of around Halloween. I'm talking a coven of witches who team up with a couple of werewolves to fight off those vampire jerks. It all starts with Mercy, who recently graduated high school and is trying to figure out who the heck she is and deal with everything after her mother attempted to murder her. There's a lot she doesn't know about herself - like that she's a witch! Some people she knows from a past life start popping up and she is forced to make some tough decisions.
As this is Blade's premier book, I really was unsure of what to expect. Now that I've finished, I'm definitely following her on Goodreads for her next book!
The Dark Awakening started off quickly and the characters are completely relatable. The only thing that confused me were the text messages they sent each other - I don't know anyone anymore (even my parents!) who send such grammatically correct texts! I could see the world these characters were in and felt the feelings of confusion, stress, and frustration that they were feeling. I loved seeing Mercy standing up for herself and making decisions regardless of who was pressuring her.
This book reminded me of Charlaine Harris's books (she's one of my favorites!). If you love Harris, you should definitely give this book a try. Who knows, it could end up on TV someday - I could totally see this book converted into a CW show!

This was my first time reading this author. Her debut book was awesome! I had won a signed paperback copy through a contest, but decided i couldn't wait and bought a Kindle copy. I read the synopsis and thought it would be something I would enjoy. I especially loved the setting, East greenwich, RI. (I live about 40 minutes away. It takes place there and in Salem, Ma. Mercy is a young woman, fresh out of high school. She had an experience with her mom which left her uncomfortable with touch, even from those closest to her. The only touch she can seem to handle is the mysterious man who joins her in her dreams. She feels comfortable, and safe around him, something lacking in her daily life. A series of strange events she realizes exactly who and what she is. However exciting that may be, it is short lived and it soon puts the people she loves and herself in danger. She also meets the man in her dreams. She soon realizes that everything and mostly everyone including herself is not what they appear to be. She wonders who, if anyone can she trust. This book kept me guessing, and more than once I found myself asking "Huh???" I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
I am so excited about this series. This is the debut novel from D.L. Blade and I am already obsessed. This book has it all: suspense, action, romance, friendship, heartbreak, mystery and all the elements to hook the reader from start to finish. This is the story of Mercy who thinks she is a normal girl. Well besides the fact that her mom just tried to kill her! Turns out her soul is a centuries old witch. And that's just where the surprises start. Her life gets turned upside down once she meets a man named Caleb who is following her. Suddenly she doesn't know who to trust and what the truth is. And there is an old but attractive vampire after her because of a myth about her blood. That is just a few things that are going on. This book had me surprised the whole time. I loved every minute of it. And it's not over! I can't wait for more from this series. I suggest this book to all fans of paranormal suspense. Also if you like a little romance thrown in, this book is for you. Bravo D.L. Blade!
