Nick Shannon, on parole for the mercy killing of his sister, has had his financial talents seconded to the Fraud Squad, where he finds the case he's asked to investigate as intellectually stimulating as watching paint dry in a dark room. Then a small-time fraudster decides to evade arrest by defenestration (the act of throwing someone out of a window) and it looks as though his crime wasn't so petty after all. In fact it looks as though he was part of a major scam set up by an ex-police officer - and the man who stole the wife of Nick's boss. Wary of other people's personal agendas, Nick traces a web of deceit and corruption to a surprising, thrilling and cliff-hanging finale.
Paul Bennett was born in London and educated at Alleyn's school in Dulwark. He studied Economics at Exeter University and spent seven years in advertising. When he left advertising, he set up a market research agency whuch he sold in 1986. He has now semi-retired in order to pursue writing. Bennett lives in a converted barn in Essex with his wife and two daughters.
Nick Shannon is working with the fraud squad but in the course of his work the man he is questioning leaps from the office window to his death. With Nick not knowing who he can trust he decides to work alone. This is another good read with humour thrown in at times but also with too much information about playing bridge. I also cannot always keep up with all the characters but it hasn't put me off. Have started book 3.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I fell in love with Nick Shannon, he is at turns funny and serious, the whole book kept me gripped and I am really looking forward to the next book.
First person fiction is lazy literature. And the first person in this novel is a totally unsympathetic character. Not worth the trouble of finishing. Didn't get past chapter one.
Another entertaining read in the Nick Shannon series. Nick is involved with the Fraud Squad in cracking a scam involving ex policeman, keeps you entertained from start to finish.
A great second story. I enjoyed the many twists and turns. The fast pace and detailed style of writing meant I did not want to put it down. Thanks for a great read.
