Twenty-five-year-old Zoe Eferhild was supposed to live a life full of adventure. Climbing mountains and day-dreaming of the magic in books was all she needed to fuel her unabashed spirit. That all changed the night her sister was murdered in front of her.

Emerging: The Zoe Eferhild Chronicles is the first book in the series. Book two will be releasing in couple of days ( 4/2/2024 ).

Zoe’s the main character of this book. She’s a young woman who’s expected to live her life and have life but life doesn’t go as planned. Zoe’s world turns upside down when she witnesses her sister being unalive in front of her eyes. Zoe’s also a victim of s3xu@l @$ault .

This book honestly exceeded my expectation! I knew I’d like it but I actually loved this book so much! The story was writing style was just so beautiful and raw. I liked how relatable Zoe’s character was, while reading the book you can feel her emotions, her pain and misery, I just wished I could be there for her.

After these traumatizing events, Zoe’s starts taking therapy sessions and we get to join her in her healing journey. Although it’s a fantasy book, her healing journey wasn’t anything extraordinary but rather was really authentic and inspiring, it didn’t felt forced or unrealistic.

Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot! You also get to experience some magical elementals and the chance to meet Zoe’s baby, Jelly (it’s her dog 🤭). So do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this book right now!

I would recommend this book to people who love:

🪄 Romantasy
🪄 Fated Mates
🪄 Mental health rep

🪄 Emotional Scar
🪄 NA/Adult (18+)

I didn’t have as much free time these past couple of weeks so it took me longer than I hoped to get through this one. And let me tell you, I was UPSET every time I had to put this book down!

I loved Zoe’s story she brings with her through the book. Her trauma and her battle with mental health was uplifting and very real. Watching her growth throughout was heartwarming 💕

I really enjoyed how this took place on Earth as we know it, but took a different view on the celestial world while still incorporating aspects we are familiar with -makes it feel like one day it could happen ✨

Here are a few of my favorite quotes 🫶🏻

“Now I had to deal with small talk. I silently regret not bringing a book with me”

“Keep on blooming, Zo. It’s alright.”

“It’s ok to not be ok.”

I’m giving this book 4.5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

I received this book as an ARC reader in exchange for an honest review. As someone who struggles with mental health, I felt seen reading about our MMC Zoe. EC has a beautiful narrative voice and ability to tell a meaningful story. The relationship between Elvy and Zoe felt authentic, and I found myself invested in the characters.

Some of my favorite quotes:
“I will burn so bright even the stars will now to the power of my name.”

“I choose me.”

“For the heart of the new moon, and the life in the starlight.”

The ending was unexpected and ends on a cliffhanger. I’m excited about book 2. This felt like a fresh take on the fantasy genre and EC balanced this well with difficult topics and funny moments throughout.

There are trigger warnings listed in the front of the book, and I definitely recommend reading those first.

Emerging – The Zoe Eferhild Chronicles by E.C. Lawton – a four star read

Chapter 1: “My spirit had been as unbreakable and free []. That all changed much too early in life. I thought my time would be filled with the adventures I´d read about in books, but those moments were never meant to be everlasting for me. As much as I grieved who I used to be, she was gone, and I had to accept that”

Zoe Eferhild is traumatised after seeing her sister being murdered in front of her eyes. Her healing journey however has more in store for her than she could ever imagine. She learns that she might not be crazy when the truth of the world around her slowly unfolds. The ocean seems to speak to her and the stars want to reach out to her. The Lord Astrals of both stars, Vega and Algol, are sent to her to give her the knowledge of being the emerged. Zoe must choose between them and find herself along the way. Will she survive the brutal trials? Which star will she choose to be her new home? One thing is sure, this is just the beginning. Bad things will happen, the question is where does Zoe stand in this?

Without further ado I want to say this was a fantastic read. Even though the book is for ages 18 and up and I am under 18, I did enjoy reading it.

I was really intrigued by this book. It sucked me into this world of fantasy that feels so near the earth but in a lot of ways also distant from it. It included traumatic experiences, that sadly happen in our world and told the story not only about the fantasy world but also healing from trauma.

As the reader you are eased into this fantasy world without knowing more that the main character, and one learns with her about the magical system. I liked this way of getting to know the world and everything around it.
I think understanding the magic system is always an important step in any fantasy book, which I would say I did eventually do. I had a few ´what´ moments while reading in which I didn’t know what they were speaking of, mostly about the names of the realms like the water realm and stuff like that, but that is not a big issue.

The connection between the main character and the reader is really beautiful and one can feel the emotions Zoe feels throughout the book. Her actions were never out of character and always based on her own assumptions and thoughts. I liked that!

Chapter 18: “[] joked, waggling his eyebrows. I took note out of [] book and slammed a pillow in his face. [] laughed, picking up her own pillow to slam into [] as well. Somehow, we erupted into a massive pillow fight [].”

There was also a balance of fun and seriousness in this book which was really nice to read. (see quote from chapter 18)

I have never read a book with this concept and these emotions in it. This might come because I have never read a book that is for ages 18 and up, so basically an adult book, but I think this book is beautifully written in a way that incorporates both the struggles of the real world we live in and the fantasy world that was created.

Chapter 31: “[] a city full of life sprawled below with lights twinkling everywhere, as if the city was an entity itself. [] a star shining brightly enough to illuminate the ocean that lay beneath it, met my gaze through the misty clouds. The sky was filled with night and swirled with purples and greens dancing across it []”

The writing is stunning!( see quote from chapter 31,24 and 29) I have never experienced such a full vocab use as in this book and I adored it, though that is a criterium, I would say, makes this book not too much interesting/harder for younger readers such as teenagers to read, but it is for ages 18 and up, so…

Reading his book felt like reading a poem full of pain and hope, full of dreaming and living. I loved it! (see quote from chapter 24 and 29)

Chapter 24: “´The sun does not rise here [] it is always night in the realm of the stars. []. So they can always lead you home.´”

Chapter 29: “´I burned for those in the darkness…those in the light owe everything to the void of the dark. The beauty of life cannot be seen without it.´”

Thank you to E.C. Lawton to let me read this book before it´s releasing on the 19.09. I enjoyed feeling with the characters and I sure hope to continue reading about this world in the books to come!!

Summary:
In this new adult romantasy novel, Zoe Eferhild is struggling and coping with PTSD and grief after witnessing the brutal murder of her sister. She’s doing all that she needs to be doing: going to therapy, having (a very sweet and dependable) emotional support dog named Jelly, and overall, just continuing to try to live her life to the best of her abilities. Zoe’s life takes a sudden turn when everything in her life starts to unfold right before her eyes.

The Lord Astrals of Vega and Algol both enter her life due to Zoe going through what is called Emerging and must go through trials to decide her fate. If she survives, where will Zoe claim her new home? Will she and her loved one be able to make it out in one piece or will she have to make even more sacrifices?

My thoughts:
I was reeled into the story almost immediately! I just recently started reading romantasy and I’m glad Emerging was one of the firsts! Along with Zoe, we learn about her (possible) new life and the magical elements that come with it. New concepts are slowly introduced, making it less intimidating to read through. Also what I love about Zoe is that she was so relatable. Her trauma and her healing journal made her feel more real and as if I was catching up with an old friend. Zoe’s character development was amazing. I felt as if I was growing and healing with her, especially since she was struggling with her mental health as well, making her even more relatable in my opinion.

Overall the story was fast-paced, the writing was beautiful, and the slow ease of introducing new magical elements keeps you engaged and wanting more. Emerging is definitely up there for one of my favorite romantasy reads so far and can’t wait for the second book!

Highly recommend to anyone just starting out in romantasy and those who have been long time fans of this genre!

Trigger warnings: references to (off page) sexual assault, witnessed death of a relative, and attempted self-harm

In most fantasy books, the characters witness terrible things, get angry, and become a badass, overcoming their issues by overthrowing a dystopic government or fighting evil. What I appreciated most about Emerging was Zoe dealt with her trauma in a realistic way - with years of therapy and an adorable emotional support dog. Sure, it helps that she grew up on modern day earth instead of some imagined world which may not have the same mental health resources. But it was very refreshing to see a strong heroine who was just not ok after being sexually assaulted and watching her beloved sister being murdered. No real person would be ok after this. And knowing how Zoe struggled and really had to work at overcoming what she's been through made her gradual growth and healing so much more satisfying and relatable. Zoe felt like a real person, not some archetypal heroine with a flaw thrown in, and I appreciated that so much. She was also strong, competent, and compassionate. Her trauma impacted her but did not keep her from being the hero this story needed. Infinite kudos to Lawton for that! Her dog Jelly is also a gem!

Turns out Zoe isn't just an average girl living in Florida, though. Secrets are revealed, and she gets wrapped up in a war among Lords of the Stars, which have angel vibes. Because so much of the book deals with Zoe's past and present state, the worldbuilding starts out slow and then comes on pretty heavy at the end. I enjoyed her romance with one of the Astral Lords, though it was a touch insta-love for my tastes. There are a few spicy scenes, but they don't linger too long. There are a lot of star folk introduced, and not all of them felt strongly differentiated to me. But I'm hoping to learn more about some of the characters in the sequel.

If you like portal fantasies where someone from our world gets thrust into another and are okay with the triggers I mentioned, check out Emerging: The Zoe Eferhild Chronicles.

✨Emerging: The Zoe Eferhild Chronicles✨

As I began this book, I totally thought it was going to be an urban fantasy meets Disney’s Zenon: girl of the 21st century, but as I continued to explore its pages, I realized that this story is an actual GEM and nothing like I assumed. That’s why we don’t judge, right?

Emerging follows Zoe, a 25 year old who is working through PTSD, panic, and grief. She has been attacked, abused, and watched her sister murdered. She has overcome substance abuse and a suicide attempt. Her shame for surviving while her sister didn’t threatens to ruin her except that she can still see her sister. But is she a ghost or more?

We walk with Zoe as she beautifully faces darkness with tools to help her not only deal with her struggles but to see that she is worthy to live. This is laced throughout the entire story and is one of the most encouraging things I’ve read. She learns she can save herself but also that she is loved and not alone.

Soon, Zoe’s world is turned upside down when 6 beautiful humans, who she swears are “other”, come into her life and show her the support and acceptance necessary to survive… as well as a whole new world. With them, she undergoes trials that result in her being the “chosen one” and possibly the answer to the broken realms outside earth.

Emerging is bountiful in its fantasy, celestial lore, witty banter, fun characters, and found family. Other tropes are fated mates, mental health rep, forced proximity. Mild language. Spice is 🌶️🌶️ but emotionally focused and not overly descriptive. Chapter 17 is handsy and chapters 31 & 39 are open door. The relationship is 🔥 and I adore it beyond words. This read was definitely worth the time and I’ll continue to recommend it!

Thank you so much to E.C. Lawton for an ARC of your novel!

Emerging: The Zoe Eferhild Chronicles is truly a book unlike any that I've read. It's a mix between science-fiction and fantasy that combines the mortal plane with the immortal.

Zoe Eferhild is a 25-year-old girl who has been through a lot in her lifetime. She attempts to live with her PTSD and grief through the help of her therapist and her service dog, Jelly. But just when she thinks she can't bear this life anymore, she starts to see her dead sister again.

This kicks off a chain of cosmic events that lead Zoe to question everything: who she is, her entire existence, and what reality truly encompasses. With the help of some immortal beings, Zoe begins to discover her purpose and where she fits into the cosmos.

I truly enjoyed reading about Zoe's journey from start to finish. E.C. Lawton has a beautiful writing style that perfectly captures the characters and gives you one wonderful story. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Favorite quotes:
"You can't spend the rest of your existence waiting for some perfect time or opportune moment ... Sometimes you have to take that leap and not fear the fall."

"I'm more than ready to start living for the reason I fought. I'm reminding myself of that, of what I've earned."

"The stars can give you life, but it is only you who can claim it."

"One day at a time ... That's what we do. We keep going. We keep their memories alive in us. We don't let the hard days claim us. We remember them for how they lived, not how they died. They were more than their death."

🌌 Fated Mates
🌌 Elemental Magic
🌌 Found Family

I absolutely loved this story. It pulled me in right from the first line on the first page one. This story follows Zoe and her service dog Jelly. Zoe is working through past trauma when her healing journey starts looking a lot different than she expected with the arrival of otherworldly guests from other realms.

The character development in this story was amazing. We get to see Zoe grow and heal from her trauma while trying to embrace the new situations and people that are put in her path. The elemental magical and realms and how the magic manifests differently in each character was really unique. The mental health representation in this book was incredibly relatable as someone with their own mental health struggles. The story was fast-paced, and the prophecy elements in the story really keep you engaged and guessing. I also really enjoyed the romance in this book as well. It was steamy and passionate but also took into account the mental health issues Zoe was facing, and it was really beautiful to watch her heal in her relationship, too.

This one is definitely in my favourite fantasy romance reads this year, and I highly recommend it. I absolutely cannot wait for book two with the cliff-hanger we are left on at the end of this book.

Thank you, E.C. Lawton, for providing me with an ARC copy of Emerging in exchange for an honest review.

Review of Emerging: The Zoe Eferheld Chronicles

Having suffered a traumatic life altering event, Zoe is on a healing journey with her dog Jelly. When a group of otherworldly individuals arrive in the quaint town of St. Andrews, Zoe finds herself on the most extraordinary adventure of her life. Now that she’s caught between two star courts, will she choose Court Vega or Court Algol?

This was an okay read but I don’t think I’m interested in continuing the series. I felt like the MCs romance happened so quickly. The FMC glossed over some important information, which made the story feel less realistic (I know it’s fantasy, but still). When she’s asking the MMC questions about where he’s from, she just glossed over him saying he’s not from Earth?

I do like how this author was able to take a coffee addict, who has an exceptional relationship with her dog, and pair it with elemental magic, and shadows. I liked reading about the FMCs healing from PTSD and mental health but also how the MMC was respectful of her boundaries. The MMC is incredibly patient. I liked the found family aspect and how Jelly continued to be an important character throughout. The entire story did feel a little rushed but also drawn out at the same time. I felt like this story was predictable and none of the twists surprised me.

This story started powerfully with one of my favourite introductory sentences EVER:
“Too often I’d heard that life was about choices, but I was of the opinion that life was really about moments”.

We immediately begin to learn about Zoe and the trauma she has survived. This story gives beautiful representation of people suffering with PTSD and mental health. We follow Zoe on a journey of healing and a path to self acceptance that eventually leads into a love story.

Elvy is definitely one of the sweetest and most patience male characters I’ve met in a while which in the end helps Zoe become who she is by the end of the book.

I do wish there was some more relationship building between these two before we completely jump into their relationship with one another. As a reader it felt a bit rushed and not completely flushed out but they are definitely cute together!
Sometimes the transitions between scenes felt a little awkward and wobbly but I was also reading on a kindle so maybe the spacing in a physical book will lend itself better.

I lastly want to say I appreciated the LBGTQ+ representation in this and commend the author for giving multiple groups of people visibility in this story!

Zoe has suffered past trauma and is struggling to move on with her life. The only thing that keeps her going is her therapy dog Jelly. However, one day at a charity event hosted by her parents, Zoe meets a group of people that turn her life upside down. She knows they aren't normal people, but who are they? Zoe learns that she is special, and starts to slowly begin to heal and see a new purpose to her life.

Emerging handles the trauma that Zoe suffers from well and interweaves her tragedy with a fantasy story that is unique. No werewolves, vampires, or fae to be seen in this book. The magical beings are far more original than that. There is romance, but it's definitely instalove. All of the characters seem to get along very well. It actually takes a while to learn who the actual antagonist is in the book, but by the end of the book the real conflict is clear, along with where the story is going in book 2. Emerging is a 4 star book for me!

This is the first book of E.C Lawton's that I have read and I cannot wait for the sequel!

I liked this book alot and feel very connected with zoe!

I love zoes bond with Jelly and the way the book shows how much of an impact a service animal can have on the handlers life.

The relationship between Zoe and grief was well written and I like how the author portrayed mental health conditions however I feel that zoe was comfortable with physical touch from Elvy way sooner then someone with her level of trauma would be.

I absolutely adore 'found family' as a trope and love the way it was written into this book however my favourite character has to be Jelly!

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a found family, reality blended with fantasy with fated mates, elemental magic and mental health representation! I'd also recommend you check the trigger warnings before reading!

Emerging is one of the most unique worlds I’ve read this far.

This book follows Zoe who is dealing with PTSD and grief through the help of her therapist and service dog. It all seems normal until she meets a group of friends that introduce her to a completely different world.

This story has romance in it but I believe it to be a subplot to the real story which is the healing journey throughout the story for Zoe.

I would say that I wish the romance had been more slow paced. It seemed like by the 3 time the two spoke to each other it was like they had been together for years and I found myself having a hard time investing myself in the romance.

Despite that I truly enjoyed the story and am excited for the second book ☺️

This was a really lovely book, with a sweet love story and a really interesting premise.

I liked Zoe as a main character alot, her mental health is a huge topic within the story (survivors guilt, substance abuse, assault) and it is done sensitively and beautifully. I think Elvy, may be the most caring, thoughtful and understanding MMC, I've ever read. He is literally perfect. I also need to give a quick shout out to Oleander who I hope we see more of in book 2!

I'm not a huge fan of insta love / love at first sight in general as I find I miss the build up but it's done in such a sweet way in this book, it didn't bother me.

I loved the side characters and it definitely had ACOTAR Vibes which I enjoyed. The epilogue had me in a chokehold and I will be diving

First of all - What an ending that was?!

At the beginning I was a bit confused as to what is happening, but as you read more and more it starts making sense.
Zoe is going through some heartbreaking stuff in her life and is struggling with her mental health (very relatable btw).

She meet someone as is instantly drawn to him. Their relationship is sweet, caring and full of joy and love. It really makes up for all the other things happening in this book.

The story is intriguing and you will want to know what happens at the end. And believe me - the ending doesn’t disappoint at all!

Thank you for letting me read it as a part of the release team!

Very well written

This book is really well written. You have Zoe who suffers from mental health and grief as she has suffered a lot. She gets a service animal to help her and her relationship with Jelly is so good.

There is romance in this book and really loved reading about Zoe and Elvy. Elvy is really perfect for Zoe and understanding.

This book is a journey for Zoe and her mental health. Definitely a journey you will want to read about. Please make sure to read the trigger warnings. What was that ending? Ugh, cannot wait for the next book. I don't like to give away too much of the book. Just give you a bit about it to intrigue you.

I loved how strong Zoe was and how she was healing from her past and traumatic experience. It was nice to see the process of her working on herself at the beginning before meeting the group and the beginning of their time together. I loved the concept of Earth with the different celestial planes and how they interacted with each other. The characters were all unique in their own way, but I didn't confused at the beginning about who was who. It was a lot of names thrown out and I had to keep making notes, but over all, I enjoyed the book.

I am struggling to write a review for this because while the writing was good, the story itself was just not what I wanted it to be. I found myself not caring about any of the characters, and the one character that was interesting got limited page time. I kept waiting for something to happen that was going to be a wow factor and it just never occurred. I’m sure this book will be great for those who are looking for a healing journey and a story of finding oneself. It just was not what I expected it to be.

Our FMC Zoe is on a healing journey. At her side is her service dog, Jelly! I absolutely love the bond they share. It reminds me of my relationship with my German shepherd💕 Throughout this book, Zoe shows great strength and resilience throughout this book while battling with her PTSD. If you're looking for a book with fantasy, elemental magic, romance, a beautiful dog, inner healing, and great world building, add this to your tbr immediately!!! E.C. Lawton wrote the start of an epic new fantasy world, and I'm so looking forward to the next book! 🖤🖤

I am a lover of romantasy and this book absolutely hit the mark for me, even more so if I can say it really captivated me especially for Zoe while I was reading the book I felt totally with her and her thoughts above all that character development that leaves you speechless because you perceive her as totally real and not just a protagonist of a book...the story is told in a way that never bores you also due to the pace and in the end I didn't stop and I wanted to start the second book straight away...if you like I like romance books with magical elements, you have to read it. Though different from the types of books I typically read, I found myself really enjoying it! The characters were well developed, there was excitement that gave you anticipation for what was coming next, and just enough fantasy and drama to keep you wanting to read more. I am always in awe of authors who can gracefully build trauma and mental health into their stories. I look forward to more books by this author.

I truly struggled to put this book down. I was drawn in from the first chapter and I cannot wait for book two to come out. That cliffhanger that it was left on is so mind blowing! I can’t wait to pick up book 2 on the 2nd of April!

If you are a fantasy reader and you love the unknown and fated love and a plot that has such a strong story, you will love this book! Very lighthearted spice but you see the romantasy within the book and it draws you in just as much!

This book had me on my toes!!! Zoe and Elvy have my entire heart!
The plot carried itself sooo well!!! Once we made it to Vega, I was unable to stop reading. I had to see what was going to happen.
E.C Lawton did a PHENOMENAL job showing us that even though we struggle with mental issues, we are still strong, we are still warriors, we are still allowed to take up space.
I loved seeing a mental health stan!!!

I can't believe I didn't read this book sooner. If you enjoy found family, chosen one, and some court vibes (like in ACOTAR) you should definitely check this book out!

I found the story to be very interesting and easy to get into. The fantasy part of it was not hard to follow and was a fun turn of events.

It also has an amazing mental health rep throughout the storyline. Everyone responds to trauma differently and seeing how Zoe responds and learns to heal was a big part of this book.

Guys, this is such a fantastic debut novel. There's is a great blend of fantasy, mental health issues/awareness, real-life scenarios, and found family.

I know with fantasy a lot of the time there is world building and a build-up to the storyline. This, however, I was sucked right in.

I absolutely loved the main characters. Elvy is, mannn he's a great MMC. 😍
Such good tension and story between him and Zoe. Also, I can't forget Jelly, the service dog. Loved that tie into the story.

If you love a nicely paced fantasy with an awesome plot, pick this one up!

I'm excited for the rest of the series.

Lawton, darling, you did such a great job with this book! You had me smiling, laughing, tearing up and clutching my heart all at the same time.

I don’t know how she did it, but Lawton beautifully intertwined the modern love of coffee, the special bond with dogs, and the realism of life-changing therapy with a magical, unique world filled with (hot) winged men, kick-ass winged women and star power. 💫

If you loved the heart-warming bond between the inner circle in ACOTAR (because I sure did!), then you’ll like this read. There’s some (spicy) romance, yes, but it really zones in on loyalty and the importance of friendship and sisterhood.

The FMC Zoe is so strong that I couldn’t help but be inspired by a bit. She has gone through so much in her life, much like how we all have, but yet she doesn’t let it define her and actively seeks what/who she is destined to be.

It was so hard for me to put into words how this book made me feel while reading it, and I still don’t feel like I did it justice. I docked one star only because the connection/love between Zoe and Elvy happened a little too fast and felt rushed for my slow-burn loving heart, but again, that’s solely personal preference!
