When Croy Esca comes crashing into Dallas's life, it doesn't take long before he's struck by how desperate he is to make sure the fixer doesn't become the one that got away.
This is what the reader can always expect from a Mary Calmes book. It's an incredible love story, with action and adventure, a couple of unexpected surprises, a little angst, but not enough to ruin the story, majorly hot sex, and really wonderful secondary characters.
I loved both main characters, but I especially loved the character of Croy Esca...what an interesting man. He hasn't had an easy life but made the life that he wanted all by himself. When he came out at eighteen, he was disowned. It seems he had been expecting something like that to happen, so, he was ready for it. He put himself through college and then moved halfway across the country. He changed his surname to that of his maternal grandmother’s, became a police officer for six years before he decided he didn’t like the way the department was run, and was then hired as a "fixer" by Jared at Torus. Croy is a deliberator. He runs everything through his brain and analyzes it before ever taking action. What makes him makes him supremely interesting is his lack of understanding when it comes to himself. For a man who spends the majority of his time thinking things through and analyzing everything, he’s a little clueless about his own personality. Watching him discover these things was more than half my fun in this story.
Now we have Dallas, an FBI Agent who probably needs to take advantage of the department therapist. He over analyzes everything; and he rarely sleeps anymore.... but he seems to not have that problem with or when Croy is around. Early on the two guys find that they fit together in more than just "the job". This was definitely "insta-lust" and "insta-love"... but it was so well written that it didn't matter.
Readers come to expect certain things from Mary Calmes’s, and if you have followed her books then you’ll recognize Croy as you’ve seen his personality before in other Mary Calmes' characters. Until the next one in the series, which of course I have...I just have to say, "thank you, Mary, for this one and all the others you have given us."
