She was the rose. He was the thorn.

Emma Ross has longed for freedom from the palace she’s been confined to since she was born. And she thought that freedom came as Duke Maxwell of Risenmoore, a guest in Korgan Palace. But when she stumbles upon a rookie pirate captain who offers her a life filled with adventure, all her well-made plans crumble at his feet.

Keiran Flanagan has always wanted to live life on the sea, a life away from the simple farm his father wants him to inherit. To get his small crew off the docks, he decides to go into piracy. But his life of treachery upon the seas is stalled when he meets a young noblewoman who is waiting to be swept away from home.

In this prequel to I Pledge My Loyalty, Emma and Keiran’s stories intertwine in the most unlikely of ways. But destiny has a way of bringing people together who otherwise should never have met, doesn’t it?

4.5 stars!! This book is more of a romance in a fantasy world than a fantasy romance, but I loved it. This book also hooked me from the first page I read in the span of a few days. I didn't want to put it down and I could always feel what the characters were feeling. I really appreciated the epilogue!!

The romance in this like in her other book was insta-lovey but it was a little harder to overlook then in her other book. I loved the whole forbidden romance and how Emma made the captain better. Still, I loved the romance! The two of them were so sweet together. I loved how they both changed because of each other. And the exploration of Emma's struggles in the court because of her falling in love with the pirate and her bringing him in undercover into her life. It was so good. Those aspects of the story were some of my favorites. I also loved how Kieran helped Emma's best friend, It really showed how much he cares for Emma, and everyone related to her. I loved her best friend, she was awesome. The banter was also incredible.

The only thing I disliked that kept this from being a 5 star was just the main guy is a pirate and so he makes questionable decisions and some of them backfire which was frustrating to read about when I care about the character so much.

I was a little skeptical to read this, since I'm normally not into full on romance novels, but this book was amazing! I enjoyed everything from the beauty of the ocean, the excitement of the pirates, the beauty of the palace, and even the romance. This was an incredible tale of forbidden love, and the plot had me hooked from beginning to end. An amazing novel written by a talented teen author!

WHOA, I'm done the Nauvian Chronicles? Really? Can I have more PLEASSEEEEE???? I finished this one in one day and I'm not ready to leave the Nauvian Sea!!!

I read this book last out of the Nauvian Chronicles, so I already knew about what happened in the epilogue and how that would affect Keiran, so I wasn't sure what his character would be like to start or if I would like him, but it was beautiful!! It was interesting to see a dual POV book in the Nauvian Sea, as the other two books were both told solely from the main Flanagan Sister of that books POV, but I think that this was the only way we could really get to know Keiran BEFORE, and see how the different things affected him.

As always, this was a beautiful romance, and I loved every part of it!!

However, another thing that was slightly new to the Nauvian Sea that I liked about this one is that BOTH Emma and Keiran had a best friend who was more of a sibling, and I loved how A. Quinn was able to use Isla and Cormac to help Emma and Keiran grow, because the four of them became great friends and the different places they were all in allowed them to each help each other in different ways.

Side note: can we get a Novella or Short Story where the Flanagan Sisters go to visit the Stewarts?! Because I think that would be soo cute!!

Another general series detail I loved is how the Nauvian Sea pulled them all together, but each book focused on a different corner of the sea, and a different country, and it was awesome to see how A. Quinn made different traditions for each. And the fact that they were all stand alone, while being in a series, with the little details that got pulled between the books was amazing to see!
