On Day 1 of her period, Sydney mother, Maggie, discovers her husband is having an affair. Her world unravels over the next 28 days as she tries to navigate a series of calamities that affect her and those she loves. It's a bad period, to say the least.
Maggie doesn't have great work/life balance - hell, what full-time working mother of three does? Work needs extra attention and so do her kids. Her marriage needs CPR. Her tight group of best friends are usually there to lean on, but a life-threatening illness trumps her own marriage woes.
Experiencing life as a single mum when her philandering husband goes AWOL, Maggie questions whether she can forgive him and keep their family together or magically go through a divorce without damaging the kids.
And why hasn't she noticed that a work colleague is attracted to her? As her sweary inside voice says, 'FFS!'
Maggie has an honest and sometimes humorous take on love, infidelity, friendship, parenting, work and death - while trying to hold it all together during a bad period.
Congratulations Teresa Russell on the release of your debut novel, A Bad Period. It’s provoking, smart, and full of characters who feel like real people. Set over 29 days, A Bad Period starts…well, on day one of Maggie’s period. Maggie’s physical pain quickly becomes an emotional anguish when she discovers her husband is having an affair. Throw in three challenging children, a recalcitrant dog and a demanding career and it’s clear Maggie’s chaotic but manageable life is about to be upended. Written with heart and humour, Maggie’s friends and colleagues rally as she questions her life choices and the difficult decisions she’ll need to make. A Bad Period is testament to enduring female friendships, romance, and ultimately, a determination to triumph over adversity.
I really got caught up in the daily life of Maggie H: motherhood to three, dedicated wife and homemaker and successful medical professional. the plot flowed easily such that I wanted to keep going with every chapter and problem/event in the story. I especially related to the Gang of Five, best friends, and their interactions, trials and heartaches. The plot carefully combined joy and love with man's shortcomings and temptations. I truly hope that Ms Russell will write another novel for us all to enjoy.
