I took some last night and finished Inner and Outer Peace Through Meditation. I have really mixed feelings about this book. The first couple of chapters teach how to meditate, and discuss the importance of meditation. Maybe it's because I was raised in an evangelical Christian home and am now very resistant to the idea of the interactive, caring 'God', but much of Singh's writing made me very uncomfortable. For example, his advice for meditating is to chant all of the names for god you can think of over and over again. While I like the idea of the soul and there being a little bit of the divine (light) in all of us in and through the soul, and certainly believe that humans need to act with kindness and love, I don't see myself practicing this brand of meditation. I don't know that I want or need to have an out-of-body experience through meditation; his writing made it seem like it was addictive, and the spiritual aspects concern me.

Singh also had lots to say on how to live, and this is really what I liked about this book. We spend so much of our time thinking about what we don't have, comparing ourselves to others, and wasting our time with empty pursuits. Reading this made me realize how full of disdain and condescension I am, and challenged me to try to change my attitudes towards others, to be filled with grace for others, and love.

I also realize I really need to stop eating meat again (sigh).

I am pleased that I'm starting Beginning Mindfulness by Andrew Weiss next week. I think Weiss' book will focus on more of the things I liked about Inner and Outer Peace Through Meditation, perhaps with a smaller does of the spirituality, which I am hesitant to embrace.

One of the last things my grandfather said to me was "meditate." I think it will take me my lifetime to come to these realizations of inner peace myself, and that is where they must come from. Right now it's beautiful to read what my grandfather believed and dedicated himself to.
One idea I really liked: "ecologists of the soul" are those who remove pollutants and reveal the beauty of the human soul.

Focusing on the Divine light and Celestial Sound to find Oneness with the universe. This is the crux of the book. Singh is famous for his leadership of the Science of Spirituality, "a non-profit, nondenominational organization, with centers in over forty countries." I won this book in a raffle at a program on mindful mediation at my local library. It has taken me years to finish the book even though it is not a difficult read. Each time I pick it up, I feel that I should be meditating instead of reading! Singh makes his case for seeking our soulful bliss through meditation, giving credit to all religions and many spiritual leaders as the book goes on. Learning that the body and mind can distract us from our own spiritual journey, the book tempts the reader to "savor what the mystics and saints of the past tasted and find the sweetness within ourselves." Divided into three sections: Inner Peace, Personal Transformations, and Outer Peace -- and further subdivided into eighteen chapters, each ending with bulleted "exercises" to try related to the chapter.

The preface of the book is written by THE Dalai Lama, so if that's not enough cred to entice, then just know that you are a drop of God's essence and when you become aware of that in your daily life you'll be on the road to inner and outer peace.

I did not realize this book would be centered on faith and getting closer to God. If I had, I would have chosen a different book on meditation. There were one or two chapters I appreciated and I like the focus on always working to improve oneself, but for me, the reason to do so is not God.

Strong start with an interesting perspective on how to meditate. The book lost me when meditation was tied back to God and trying to get closer to God.

"Inner and Outer Peace through Meditation" is Rajinder Singh's meditation technique of "Sant Mat" or "Surat Shabd" Meditation on the "Inner Light and Sound". Unlike other meditation techniques, there are no difficult postures or "potentially" dangerous breathing techniques and anyone can engage in this practice. This approach to meditation is described as "positive mysticism" as one is able to achieve spiritual growth while fulfilling one's life responsibilities. However, one does need to be initiated into "Sant Mat" by a Living Master or Teacher. This book is informative, compelling and I would highly recommend it.
