The world of the Dark-Hunters is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. It’s dark. It’s gritty. It’s dangerous…

And it’s a whole lot of unexpected action and snarky comebacks.

My name is Cyprian Malachai and I should have never been born. I know it. My mother knows it and most of all, my father, the Ambrose Malachai is more than aware of it. Every creature under the sun is out to end me.

But I don’t go down easy. Anyone who’s ever fought a Malachai knows that fact.

My father thinks that he’s heard the last of me . . .

He hasn’t. Our war is only an interlude. It’s about to heat up and I have a massive grudge to settle. One that is far from over . . .

As with all of Sherrilyn (Kenyon) McQueens books I expect this book will leave me speechless and anxiously awaiting for the next installment.
However due to her arsehole ex-husband I believe we will never see this book nor any others from my Queen Goddess. She is and always will be my favorite author. She has amazed me with her stories. I have introduced her books to so many of my friends and family that now everyone I know reads her books.
I wish I could help her in some way with all her personal issues so she may return to doing what she does best,
write amazing stories in worlds that seem so very real to all of her fans.

I read the Chronicles of Nick years ago and I absolutely loved it but I am not sure I'll pick this up after the travesty of the CON ending.

I knew where the story would end up as CON was a prequel and in order for it to tie in with the Dark Hunter series. I've honestly never read such a rushed and unsatisfactory ending, it read like a poor fan fiction. I could forgive a bad ending but after years of investment in characters and a story that simply gets absolutely butchered in order to make room for a sequel to the prequel with a character who only appeared in the last book??

CON was supposed to feature 9 books but the author randomly decided to jam two books into one (which happened to be the shortest in the series) in order to make way for this?? Nah, I frankly don't trust the author. I know this is the supposed sequel but I honestly couldn't care less about Cyprian's story.

It's been a long time since I read a book in the world of this author. I know she had issues in her life that stopped her from writing, so I'm glad to see books coming out again. But since it's been a while I did feel a bit lost at times. Partly due to the time since I've read the books and partly due to there being so many characters in the different series that cross worlds, it also doesn't help that the go back and forth in time. For much of this book they were in 3220's, which sort of blows my head, like I can't compute.

So with all of this said. I just went with things. We have young Nick and his friends, trying to undo things that they have done. It gets weird at times because he talks to Ambrose, who is just old Nick, and they run into characters they sort of know, but sort of not and they can't talk too much because they could ruin things with the time travel. Not sure what I think of things, because again, it's been a long time and I just went with things. I guess it will all depend on the future books how this will settle for me, or maybe I'll decide to do a re-read, we'll see.

Official star rating: between 2.5 and 3 stars.

This one hurts to write, honestly. The Chronicles of Nick is my favorite book series. I grew up with CON. Caleb Malphas is at the top of my favorite characters list. I was left somewhat unsatisfied with Intensity, but remained hopeful for the sequel series because these characters and this world are my lifeblood. My non-spoiler review is that the story felt rushed. Like we thing A happened and then thing B happened and then thing C. And usually a thing happened because the plot needed it to happen. Most of it didn't feel like I was back in the CON world, save for a couple scenes or character exchanges (like the Labyrinth scene. I loved the Labyrinth scene). Some characters didn't feel like themselves until the very end of the book. (More about this in the spoiler section.) There were also too many characters. I know where Intensity left off, it's logical for all these characters to be here. I just wish Vawn and Kaziel stayed behind. I don't have any connection to them, they came into the main series in the final book, and with them out of the way, there would've been more room for interactions between Nick, Kody, Caleb, Xev, SPOILER, and Aeron. But even Aeron maybe could've stayed behind. The main series gave me the impression that Xev and Aeron were really close friends, even best friends, and I don't think they said two words to each other in this book. There were a couple continuity and grammar mistakes (more about that below). There were also two phrases repeated so much, I need a break from those words in that order. (Note: "X clapped Y on the back/shoulder" and "Nick/He hadn't thought about that before.")

Above all, I'm excited to read the next book. I'll always be excited to read Caleb, Nick, and Kody.

Okay, onto my spoilery thoughts.

This review will mention spoilers so read at your own risk

I'm really disappointed in the length vs quality aspect ratio of this installment. It felt quite dialogue heavy in terms of repeating over and over all the information we've known from the previous eight or so books and then when we finally got to some sort of action, everything was resolved quite easily and we were right back at square one again in terms of where we began. 215 pages, 10 chapters. It's not giving much.

In the previous book, after a character's death, Nick drinks the Waters of Lethe to erase his memories. This character is immediately brought back in the opening scene of this book. In my opinion, this was an unfair resurrection and it didn't serve a lick of the plot. After the character is brought back, the gang waits until Nick presumably graduates high school- only like 2-3 months later- to bring his memories back. In my opinion, it would have had greater impact for Nick to "wake up" at the point we are in the DH world, after the events of Nick becoming a DH, after what happens in Styxx. That way Nick is grown enough to battle Cyprian like he plans and it would have been the perfect segue into reuniting CON with the DH timelines.

However, Kenyon took it a different way and decided Teen Nick and gang would travel to the future to first hit up Ambrose before Cyprian is conceived. Of course, this part of the plot was completely a waste of pages because Ambrose doesn't know who Cyprian's mother is because... the event hasn't happened yet! You'd think before time jumping, Nick and Caleb would have thought through when to time jump or narrowed down the possible mother but no. So after that waste of time, they time jump again to after Cyprian has won the great battle and decide they are going to defeat Cyprian here by.... bringing back all the allies that Cyprian has imprisoned? This logic doesn't make sense to me because wouldn't you want to fix the future by fixing the past, not fixing the future in the future?

There were also other issues I had with the book:

1. I understand one of the main themes of the series is learning to rely on your family and the love and support they bring. Nick has to learn this time and again. However, Nick meets new characters in this novel that he has only known in seconds and they immediately help him with his tasks. If you're going to have these characters be so friendly towards Nick, maybe give a reason WHY? Why are they failing in their duties so much? What are their motivations here?

2. The tasks themselves were quite lackluster and Nick didn't have to do anything at all. Where is the tension, where are the stakes, where is Nick doing something?

3. There were certain scenes that could have been done differently to serve greater impact and I know I'm not the author but it felt like an editor could have really stepped in and prompted more from Kenyon.

This just wasn't interesting to me.

This book felt rushed. I’d hoped once the author seemed to be past all of her personal issues that the books would return to their old quality but it doesn’t seem to have happened yet. This book was like five years coming and it just… wasn’t great. It was like… oh we better bring back Nick’s memories and bam! He’s back and we’re off on an adventure. Not even a conversation about it. Caleb seemed super out of character. I was half convinced he was Cyprian in disguise. I wish he was. That would make Cyprian somewhat interesting. Right now he’s a whiny baby. Oh no my mommy didn’t love me and my daddy did have a good mommy whaaaaa.

I don’t think I’ve ever rated something under and three stars and I adore Nick and Sherrilyn Kenyon but this book wasn’t a good reintroduction to the series.

Lots of fun, but much too short!

Nick and the gang are back, and I am beyond thrilled!! The sarcasm, the high stakes of saving the world, and the crew overcoming their own internal struggles. . . I'm here for it!

Everything about this was perfect, except the length. I say that with the utmost desire to jump back into things and find out what happens next! But on that note, unfortunately because of the length, I don't feel like enough happened. Like there were pieces cut short that could have been integral to the story. Maybe it's because I'm so excited for more content in the world of the D-H, but it knocked a star for me not having certain parts fleshed out a little more.

I definitely plan on continuing the series. And I still recommend this book.

At first, I was kind of lost because it has been a while since I read the last Nick book, but I quickly got up to speed. Sherrilyn Kenyon has definitely refined her story telling to an even higher level! This book has so much packed into a small package but the story flows perfectly. It does not feel rushed nor do you feel as if it is forced in any way. So fluid and graceful, in a world ending apocolyptic way! lol Nick is one of those characters that you can't help but love and yet you wonder how he gets himself into such awful messes, then how in the world he's going to get out of them. Read on, my friends! You won't regret it!

That a great addition to Nicks story. I would recommend rereading the left few books before reading this one. I didn’t was a little confused at first since it’s been years.
Nick and his friends are still in the fight for their lives. It’s going to be a great battle.

I was given an ARC for an honest review.

Kenyon's ability for writing fiction is mesmerizing and this book is a perfect example. I've followed Nick from the very beginning and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. His story continues to be one of my favorite and he's one of my favorite characters. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

After Artemis brings her back to life, Kody flashes to Caleb’s home. She needs him and the rest of the hellhound crew help her save Nick. The Cyprian Malacai is still alive in the future and is using the timelines to keep trying to kill Nick. But their current Nick has no memory of them.

This is a really complicated, confusing story with all the time switches and complications not just involving Nick, but the actions of characters in the other books. Ms. Kenyon-McQueen must be having a very hard time keeping it organized so she can make stories work. I didn’t even try, just read for the action.

But, there’s Simi!! She makes everything better.

Fave scenes: Kody’s reunion with the crew, the baby migraine, the tree roots and the dragonfly.

"Anyone can fight when they're winning. It's finding the courage to stand after life has beaten you down that makes you a hero."

This sort of picks up where the chaos that we were previously drenched in ended.
Despite it being the start of a new series (yeah!!) the author does a solid job of outlining who is who and what has or is happening - The storylines tend to blend together between the series. Anyway
I highly recommend if possible reading the Chronicles of Nick before this. You will not be disappointed.

Back to Sabotage

'The real mettle of a person shows when everything's going wrong and especially when they're suffering."

Nick's future son is hades bent on destroying his father and taking the Malachi powers
He thought he had achieved his goal and was a step closer
However, time manipulation seems to be a bit popular at the moment which leaves him to resort to more underhanded tactics to achieve his goal
As if he can be more callous
He should have known it wouldn't be that easy to harm Nick or his family - No matter what year you do it in

"Never let fear control your actions. It's a horrible master"

So many of my favorite characters are in this new release.
Old friends we thought we lost and some new ones I hope to see more of
Nick is still battling to control his Malachi side but he is learning with the help of his best friends and his future wife who is also his current wife.
Ambrose does make a cameo but he knows if he exposes too much it may change the weave destiny
We get to catch up with Styx and Ash as well as Simi

This was packed with new twists and storyline breadcrumbs
Skeletons were drug out of their closet and exposed providing important puzzle pieces to not only the future but past episodes

If you enjoyed the Chronicles series you will definitely want to grab this one
All the banter - the sarcasm - the action - the betrayals - and naturally Nick's crew of oddballs can be found within
I am excited for the next release in the series
My biggest complaint is its only 172 pages and the paperback is hard to acquire

I read the Chronicles of Nick series a few years ago and fully enjoyed it. Thus decided to continue to read the upcoming released books. (Disclaimer that I never read the Dark Hunter series).

Book Review: Similar to how I would describe the previous books I’ve read in CON, the storyline is pretty good/interesting but the actually writing is not great…and this new installment is worse. It feels like a fanfic rather than an actually canon novel. Scenes are not well fleshed out, scenes are rushed and conflict is too easily resolved; seems like there should be more push back to Nick’s friends wanting (spoiler alert) to go to the future. When characters fight or the aftermath of fights, it barely describes the fight and then just says they are tired without giving off and making me believe they are tired (ie describing the wounds of the group post fight, giving more details on the fight and the strain during the fight). There are a few “emotional” scenes that don’t have any weight and don’t feel emotional. (Further spoiler alert) Deaths in the book held no weight with the character(s) that died only being introduced ~2 pages earlier and only spoke 2 sentences yet it feels like we should be more distraught. Other deaths hold no weight since they are reversed instantly by Artemis/Acheron. There is still fun snarky comments but it feels out of place and a little over done when everyone is snarky. There is way too much explanatory info dump slapped in your face in case you haven’t read the other books which even as someone that hasn’t read Dark Hunter series and hasn’t read CON in a few years, this wall of explanatory text took me out of the story and didn’t really help me understand the story more. Only really left me more confused. Everything from the previous book doesn’t hold much weight and the book is pretty much - what if Nick tried again to change his fate?

tldr; don’t bother reading this book. It’s very short and doesn’t add much to the story - pretty much it’s hammered into our heads multiple times that Nick can’t save his mom from dying in the timeline without causing worse issues, Nick comes to terms that he can be comfortable in his Malachi form/powers without being overwhelmed with hatred, love is the most powerful thing/can allow him to have powers in the presence of his son.

Nick Gautier believed he was born to end the world. For years, he felt his destiny was beyond his control, a cruel joke played by the Fates. But just when Nick and his crew thought they had averted the Apocalypse, they were dragged back for another round. This time, they must stop the Powers-That-Be and Nick's future son to prevent the ones he loves from becoming mere memories. In a demon-eat-demon world, Nick and his team are all that stand between humanity and total subjugation, delivering unexpected action and snarky comebacks along the way.

This latest installment in Nick Gautier's saga is filled with everything fans love: high-stakes action, witty dialogue, and a demon-infested plot. However, the book's length left much to be desired. While it perfectly sets up the wider story and introduces key players, it felt too short, with some scenes seemingly cut short that could have added depth to the narrative.

Despite these shortcomings, the book remains enjoyable, especially for longtime fans of the Dark-Hunter universe. Nick's journey through these trials continues to be compelling, and the action-packed plot keeps readers on their toes. It may not be Sherri's best work, but it serves as a solid bridge to the next chapter in Nick's story. The promise of more to come in this intricate and thrilling world is enough to keep fans eagerly anticipating the next installment.

One thing that bugs me is that with characters that have supernatural powers or access to powerful artefacts, it becomes a very convenient way to info dump lore or unearned knowledge of experiences the characters haven't undergone yet. Like, the character's thinking process and approach to his current problems is basically "I must now learn from this future mistake I haven't made yet, and not repeat it in the here and now". This character development feels unearned when I'm being told it's based on events he hasn't lived through rather than his past experience. Interactions with other characters are affected by it: "I trust this person because I know that my future self will for a reason I can't or shouldn't know." Just let me see them actually form bonds! The plot unfolds so awkwardly because of this issue.

It's not a bad book by any means, but it's got a really haphazard plot due to worldbuilding, which is really surprising at this point considering this is the second (!!) YA spinoff of a series that's been ongoing for decades.

EDIT: Oh and I just remembered DAGON?? Whatever happened to that guy?! Still no explanation.

Still shorter than I prefer but all of her books have been that way the last few years. Nick seems more powerful and yet he forgets to use powers that come easily to him??? There isn't enough to scenes that are important. Certain things get glazed over for us to continue on. Maybe someone else is writing her books? Honestly if she isn't into this series anymore I wish she would end it instead of stringing us along. Also I feel like there is a lot of filler with explaining things from other books which is some aspects I appreciate but it takes away from the story when it uses up a whole page to explain something that doesn't really matter. I found myself skipping those parts. Such as when it explained the atlantians being turned to stone. I felt that could have been mentioned without being explained. It didn't pertain to the story enough to have a whole page dedicated to it. But I'm just glad that the series is continuing. It felt more like an episode in a series rather than a whole movie, if that makes sense?

Four stars because I'm just glad that she is still writing and I enjoy the chronicles in Nick even in a sub-par rushed version.

All I can say is...damn. And also thank the universe. And also wtf is Nick and the crew going to do now?
The thing that makes these books so great is the in depth characters, the involved world building, and that 7 or 8 books in I can still have those 'I did not see that coming' moments on the regular. Another thing I love is how much heart they possess. Nick has had a tough life, seen some of the worst things both humanity and the supernatural have to offer, and still has hope and trust and love. We should all be like Nick.

Quotes
You never, ever got over things. You just got through them. The sting of it was always there to burn you to the core. All time did was allow you to come to terms with the bad and design a better way to cope.

“We are all responsible for the paths we choose. No matter what others say, or suggestions they give, only you pick the path. Only you bear the consequences.”

We all make mistakes. They’re easy. It’s learning to live with them that’s hard. Life will test you and bring you to your knees, over and over again. That’s when you have to go deep, catch your breath, and raise one finger and one fist to the Fates. Come get some, bitches. ’Cause I’m not going down. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever. You stand up, Nick, and you fight with everything you have. That’s when you know you’re a real warrior. Anyone can fight when they’re winning. It’s finding the courage to stand after life has beaten you down that makes you a hero.

I loved the YA series Chronicles of Nick (based on characters from her adult Dark Hunter series). I waited so long for this book, but the author has spent several years trying to get her life and career back together that it seemed like it would never get published. I really enjoyed it, the connection Nick has with the other characters, his brash and humourous way. The author has planned 3 more books to follow this storyline before finally publishing adult Nick's story in Dark Hunter. I love the character of Nick from the adult series and it's one of the reasons I started reading Chronicles of Nick. I did find it a bit short (being YA), and wished she could've written this story arc in just two novels. I do recommend, but this series was published years after the Dark Hunter series began (its more like a prequel series) that some of the storyline and characters might be confusing.

After long time, this series is back. Original title would have been Heart of Venom, and probably the whole concept a tad different.

This book has the original gang minus Dagon & Nashira (where are they?) and all the charm. What I loved about this book is that they are going to the the future to fight the fight there. It interests me the most to see some spoilers for the current books or at least hints for it. Who ends up with whom, etc.

I am not sure how much to take deaths in these series serious, as they are time traveling and everything. But as of this book Kaziel is dead, and he was supposed to be the her of the 3rd official Lords of the Avalon series. So I am going to take everything with a grain of salt. Regardless, this book was nice, but I had to have my character guide throughout the whole time to be reminded who is related to whom.

I just hope that they revive Cherise somehow.

Full review to come when I get computer access again
Not what I expected from the blurb or what I remember from Shadows of Fire as a quadrilogy was supposed to be. Nick and his motley crew of madess, not Cyprian and his immediate allies (primarily Lagurre and Grim).
Sherri, what are you doing to me? This adds to and perhaps confuses the already chaotic family tree. A new primordial and a new name for another. We are introduced to a family member that I never expected.
This very much feels like setting up the wider story and showing the reader who the pieces are. And with some of the pieces in play, everything is an option. It isn't the best book that Sherri has written, not by a long way, but for the fans, it is enjoyable and will lead well into whatever comes next (whenever that may be).

This book was okay for me, although it was a little confusing trying to keep track of everything going on. I did love the first several books in this series but really didn’t like Intensity much. This one had a couple of surprises and the ending definitely leaves off with the intention of more books. I found a couple of inconsistencies, but there is a lot going on. I will continue to read this series as I love this author.

Love anything with Nick in it, even if it bounces all over like a tennis ball. SK was for many years my hands down favorite author until the divorce years. I feel like she changed (I know most people do with ugly divorce) her desire to recoup money because of said ex has turned me off. This book took me 6 months to read. Not because it is bad, but because of my anger. We've been waiting years and years for Savitar's and many others stories, I'm hoping that I live long enough to see them written. Do I love everything Nick? Yes, but his story was supposed to be done. I absolutely want it, but not nearly as bad as the ones I've waited for so long for.

Sabotage is the first book of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Shadows of Fire series. Kenyon has a long series called the Dark Hunter series which is an adult series. This series is based off of a character from that series and his adventures when he was young.

This series is a young adult read and I would say early early teenage. It’s an extremely easy read yet it’s worth it as it helps provide extra detail for her Dark Hunter series. This book does not have too much resolve in it but it has plenty of action and sets up perfectly for another book. So far she has released four for the series.

I would recommend reading the Dark Hunter series and then this one to supplement it.

Uhh… there was a side character that was there helping to them and yen suddenly disappears. This character is connected to them, but we get no explanation on what happened. Are they alive? Gone? Or transported to another spot, but is perfectly fine? Also, this whole timeline thing is still super confusing - I really hope that SK kept track of everything.

I read this after reading Simi and I have to say that I enjoyed this one so much more! The template that she used for that book would work if it was only half of the book and we got more time in the present. Granted this one didn’t have closure and I’m assuming this storyline isn’t a standalone. I know she said there’s one more book left, I’m hoping it answers everything. Or at least there’s another “spin off” that will provide us the answers.

Nick’s Back!

So excited that my favorite Cajun is back and his gang is with him! So, this is set in the very messed up future where the Malachi has started Armageddon. Spoiler alert! It wasn’t Nick after all, but his son, if you remembered from the last book. This story felt a little short and mainly seemed to be getting the group to gather an army to fight. Lots of familiar faces, and sadly recounting the ones we lost already to the war. Overall- a stellar installment and I’m ready for the rest of this series to roll!!!

New Beginnings

Sabotage brings Nick and his companions to the future to attempt to save mankind. They have failed once and this may be their last chance. They face many challenges and Nick discovers more about himself as demon with a conscience and morals and how knowing this impacts who and what he is. He must face his greatest nemesis, his son. A fast read but with so many subtle layers and more insight to the characters. As always, Sherrilyn leaves us wanting more and I can’t wait for the next installment.
