A young adult hockey romance filled with making amends, family, friends, and discovering the real person inside while juggling the crazy, upside-down world of high school.
Jonah Robinson has really messed up. He’s spent the last year hanging out with someone who wasn’t leading him in a good direction. Now that Felix has seen the light, perhaps it’s time for Jonah to do the same. Making amends is not going to be easy when he’s not exactly been the nicest guy at Chesterford. With the help of his family and a special friend at the school, Jonah is ready to try to make things right with those he wronged. The first person on that long redemption list is Tyler, the brightest player on the Coyotes, at least in Jonah’s eyes. He’s taken a thousand pictures of Tyler for the school paper, but he’s going to have to learn how to develop more than just negatives if he wants to grow close to Tyler.
Tyler Corrigan’s dad has left, and it's just him and his mom now. Despite not being the biggest person on the ice, speed is Tyler's superpower, and the team has his back during the worst of the bullying he'd had to endure. His friends make him feel safe when his real world is full of fear, but no one can protect his heart when an awkward and messed up Jonah is suddenly around every corner, wanting to make things right.
Sorry can be a difficult word to believe, but trusting your heart is everything.

Sweetness. Cuteness. A couple of heavy feelings moments that just add more to the story and make it feel... just more. To be noted, I really like Tyler and Jonah, both as individuals and as a couple. And I really like how they faced their struggles, both internal and external. I'm struggling really hard to keep this review spoiler free, because there's several moments of the book I want to gush over and yet I must abstain. I am really curious about Kenji the figure skater and was really surprised by who it was that sent the tip of the bullying. That I can say
Couldn't really get into this one as much as the previous book. Jonah and Tyler both felt a little flat in comparison to Soren and Felix, and I found it hard to keep my attention on this book.
I'm intrigued for the next book in the series with Shaun and Kenji though.
Loving this YA ice hockey series from these ladies. This was such a cute read. The plot line was well thought out, and I loved how Vicki and RJ incorporated all the characters from the previous book, into this one,so their stories didn't just end when their book did. I've always enjoyed a good redemption tale, and this certainly hit the brief. It was kind of refreshing to have characters that were truly flawed, but whose growth I totally bought into. Felix saw the light in the previous story, and he plays a big part in this one. I thought it was very realistic the way in which he was overprotective of Tyler, trying to compensate for how he'd treated him, trying to keep him safe from the bullies, acting like a mother hen. I certainly felt for Jonah. Who hasn't, as a teenager, done stupid stuff just because they want to fit in? I'm not excusing his past behaviour, but could understand how he got involved in the bullying of Tyler... I loved how his family (who were all lovely 😍), took him to task, but listened to him and tried to understand why he had behaved as he did. Tyler's just a delight, he's already been through a lot, so for all he went through, due to his femme appearance, he was probably the strongest character in the storyline. He and Jonah were effortlessly sweet and swoony together. There's a bit of everything here, action, comedy, drama, cuteness , the good, the bad and the ugly; also a big dose of what goes around comes around. You name it this book has it all.
This was a cute story, filled with sweetness, caring, friendship, and tons of teen-angst. I absolutely loved both Jonah and Tyler and their families were just fabulous!
I enjoyed getting to catch up with the Coyotes, especially Soren and Felix, who featured heavily throughout the story. I also enjoyed getting to know Sean a bit better and I’m looking forward to getting his story.
This was a great addition to the series. It’s well-written and the collaboration between the authors is seamless. Definitely a recommendable read!

4.5 stars I’m not a big YA reader but when it comes to these two amazing authors I couldn’t resist giving it a go and I’m glad I did. I loved Jonah and Tyler and the authors had me sympathising with what each was dealing with and going through. This sweet coming of age, bully redeeming himself story was an easy read with appropriate low heat and emotion and I highly recommend it. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
On Thin Ice is a very good YA redemption story for Jonah, who starts the story being called out for being a bully at school. He wants to be better, and his parents encourage him to apologise to those he's hurt. The person he most wants to do that for is Tyler, fastest skater on the school's hockey team, and he may think that he's ever so cute. Tyler is not keen to forgive when words are all that are given, it's actions that show meaning and so Jonah does that. Spending time around the hockey team, photographing them for a project for the school paper, brings Jonah in closer proximity to Tyler and allows him to show sincerity, mostly with food, and it's a sweet and slow development between the two. Hugh school drama is never complete without the big school bully, some sporting drama and a romance which seems to be what guys on the team are providing. First Soren and now Tyler. Tyler has his own issues to deal with, an abusive father who left but taunts him and his mother, and then being loudly himself with his pink hair and femme style. I thought that Jonah's biracial and bisexuality storyline was well written and he calls himself two bi, turning it to a positive quality rather than something bullies can take from him. Both young men have a loving and supportive family, as well as the hockey team who, though understandably wary of Jonah on Tyler and Soren's behalf, welcome him when he's proven himself. I really enjoyed reading this YA romance. It is very light on heat, mid range drama but with a couple of tense moments regarding the bullies and Tyler's father. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Tyler stole my heart. What with his pink hair and eyeliner and speed on the ice and bravery when confronting family issues, Tyler is definitely up there as one of my favorite characters.
But Jonah is intriguing too. Between being two-ways bi-, and figuring that out, plus having a scholarship to a great school and a real talent for photography but nearly squandering his opportunity hanging out with the wrong people, his is a fascinating story. I also love his interactions with his sisters. Ultimately, his is a tale of seeking redemption and it is beautiful.
All the usual things that delight me in a hockey book are present, and I love how Jonah gets taken in by the team and finds camaraderie there. I also love the way the families come together.
Bullying is a significant issue raised in this book and the authors tackle it with frank compassion.
I would be remiss if I didn’t also do a jump for joy as a long-time adult reader at appearances by Ten, Jared, Dieter and Trent from Scott and Locey’s Harrisburg Railers series.
All told, a beautiful romance in a fantastic YA book by authors who are both on my auto-buy list. Another 5-star read.
You make mistakes when you are young and just trying to figure out who you are. If you are very, very lucky you will get the chance to make things right, earn forgiveness from the one person who you unfortunately hurt the most and thankfully earn their love. Jonah let things happen to Taylor. He didn't stand up and do the right thing right away but eventually he did and his life changed for the better. Jonah had a harsh lesson but fortunately learned from it. Unfortunately Jonah had been bullied himself throughout his life. Taylor has a huge heart and the ability to forgive. Taylor and Jonah's story was filled with anger, pain, bias, humor, kisses, family and friends that had their backs. I loved that Jonah had to work hard for Taylor's affection and forgiveness but it was something that needed to happen. I don't want to give too much away but I will say this was a beautifully written story with amazing characters. Shout out to Jonah's parents who were awesome, VERY relatable and at times hilarious. Taylor's mom was a brave ,wonderful woman. I really enjoyed the supporting characters too. It was lovely to see Soren, Ten and Jared too!
This is a YA enemies-to-boyfriends read with redemption and understanding on both parts. Tyler is a sweetie and I googled his pink colour to see what it looked like and we learn more about Jonah as they overcome past hurts.
I love that the story of Felix and Soren is continued through this book but doesn't detract from the new story.
The who dobbed them in was not even on my radar ...and I'm looking forward to Kenjis story next.
So sweet. Tyler is so lovely, he has a big heart and forgives Jonah for his past transgressions. A nice YA story that is so easy to read. Great characters, good storyline, HEA. Recommend
This YA ice hockey series by Vicki and RJ is a delightful and cute read with a well-thought-out plot. The authors skillfully incorporate characters from previous books, allowing their stories to continue. The story focuses on redemption, featuring realistically flawed characters who undergo significant growth. Felix's overprotectiveness towards Tyler adds depth to the narrative, and Jonah's past mistakes are relatable for anyone who's made teenage blunders. The story also highlights the importance of family support. Tyler, with his resilient spirit, shines as a character. The budding romance between Tyler and Jonah is sweet and endearing. The book offers a blend of action, comedy, drama, and heartwarming moments, making it a well-rounded and engaging read.
I've been wracking my brain(and yes I know I could just look it up on my kindle but why go the easy route?😉) to recall if the authors let us know that book 2 would be Tyler and Jonah's journey but I remember being certain it would be when I read Off the Ice. I was not disappointed because the only thing keeping Tyler & Jonah from replacing Soren & Felix as my favorite pair is that S&F came first and in a multi-couple series, the first is always my favorite.
Unlike Felix, Jonah did not have a dysfunctional homelife that lead him down the path of bullying, for him it came down to peer pressure, following the pack, not quite having the courage to say "enough!". It may not make his behavior in book 1 acceptable but it does show that the ability to change is present. There were signs of his heart in his scenes in book one so watching just where his heart and thoughts are in book 2 is absolutely lovely. The scenes with his little sisters says it all, they may only be a few but for me how a brother treats his little siblings can go a long way to setting a characters' worth.
Tyler has not had it easy at home or at school thanks to the likes of Miles and one time followers, Felix and Jonah. But now that Felix has found the courage to walk away thanks to Soren and Jonah is trying to follow Felix's path, school should be easier but Miles is still around and seeing as Miles(and many in the school) believe it was Tyler who turned the bully in will it really be better? For that answer you have to read for yourself. As I stated, Tyler's homelife hasn't been the best either but breaking free of his dad's hold in their life gave both Tyler and his mom a chance at building a better future, but that doesn't mean they can just flip a switch and it's all hunky dory, it takes time but Tyler is definitely a determined youth.
Together the boys find a new way forward, though it's neither easy nor instant but perhaps that is what makes it worth fighting for all that much more sweeter. I just want to wrap them both in tight Mama Bear hugs until everything is perfect but life is about learning and growing, we readers can only do so much in the wanting to protect department. On Thin Ice is a very lovely and honest journey of growth and happiness which can make it sound and seem very adult at times. They do have to grow up sooner than most but they still are teenagers at heart, Scott & Locey do a brilliant job of balancing their youthful friendship and eventual romance with the angst that forces them to face that adulting a little sooner than many of their classmates.
As I started with not remembering if the authors' clued us into who would be at the heart of book 2 at the final page of book 1, I can say here in On the Ice we briefly met Shaun and Kenji who we know will have their story told Spring of 2024 and I can't wait. I may not read much in the young adult genre, with a few exceptions(Anne of Green Gables comes to mind) I probably have only read a handful since I myself was a young adult(as I turned to the likes of Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steel, and Jackie Collins by the time I was 15) so I hate to make comparisons to other YA stories, especially in the LGBT area. Perhaps I'm a little biased for 2 of my favorite authors, RJ Scott & VL Locey, but I think they do an amazing job delving into the youthful storytelling in Chesterford Coyotes and of course it's definitely worthy of the Scott & Locey Hockey Universe moniker. A true delight from beginning to end.
Chesterfield Coyotes is an excellent YA LGBTQIA hockey series from R.J. Scott and V.L. Locey. A YA spinoff from the original ‘Harrisburg Railers' hockey series, the Chesterfield Coyotes continues to be very successful at bringing the reader into a high school environment. One acknowledged as competitive, often stressful, whether that world is a private or public high school. Each comes jammed packed with its layers of niches created by parental expectations, sports, societal layers, whims, and oftentimes race and sexuality.
That bullies and bullying is a problem and hot topic should surprise no one. That addressed in an impactful, emotionally charged storyline that’s a carryover from the first book, Off The Ice.
Why someone would bully another person, the backstory and character of the person or person’s behavior figures in a realistic, honest manner.
Jonah Robinson was a part of a group of young men that targeted/bullied a certain group of people in their school. Made their lives a misery. Which as a biracial young man with a background of struggling in schools and having a loving family, made his involvement with this group incomprehensible to his parents.
Scott and Locey not only give us an excellent character in Jonah but provide an emotional intimate window into Jonah’s story. His stumbling around his fears, facing his family, confronting the people he’s hurt. And his shaky journey to forgiveness , redemption, and a new future.
That means facing Tyler, of the pink hair, makeup, hockey playing Tyler. Who is also one of the worst of those that group bullied, and Jonah’s growing crush. Tyler’s character is one of depth and a crushing backstory.
That’s where I really appreciate the layers the authors took care to build into their narrative. Each boy, each family has its strengths and struggles, each is undergoing growth that will support their sons emotionally as they go through their own journey with their problems at school, the issues of bullying, and the issues of self esteem.
The relationships between the boys, their friends and families all feel very grounded in reality and real life issues. Their lives are recognizable.
I loved them and this story. The series is shaping up to be one of their best. And I can’t wait for the next.
I’m highly recommending this, even to those who normally don’t read YA (like me). I think you’ll find it entertaining and relatable.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆ ON THIN ICE is the second book in the Chesterford Coyotes series. It can be read as a standalone, but I think it would read better if you read in the order the authors intended. ON THIN ICE is a young adult, high school hockey, teen-angst, enemies-to-friends-to-boyfriends read.
Jonah is newer to Chesterford and is there on a scholarship. He was shy and somehow got in with Felix and Miles. He hated the bullying Miles did but stood by while he did it. So he was as much to blame as Miles was. Jonah wants to be a better, kinder human and the best way to do that is to distance himself from Miles and make amends to those he hurt, starting with Tyler. Tyler happens to be best friends with Soren, who is now dating Felix, and Felix and Jonah have a lot to work out between them.
ON THIN ICE is a super cute at moments very heavy read. I loved how Tyler made Jonah work for his forgiveness. I can't wait to see what's next for this series! I am not a usual young adult reader but I am so invested in these characters!

On Thin Ice is the second installment in the new YA hockey romance series Cesterford Coyotes by RJ Scott and VL Locey. This book brought some tough issues into play, but I think the authors dealt with the sensitive subjects extremely well for the intended audience.
Tyler and his mother have had a lot of scary situations thrown their way, and added to that, Tyler has been dealing with bullying at school. Although Felix (from Off the Ice) has started making amends for his part in this, Jonah is feeling extreme remorse for his reluctance to stop the main offender’s actions. An anonymous report to the authorities begins his journey to redemption.
I really enjoyed this book, even more than the first, I think. Tyler was extremely reluctant to trust any changes or apologies, and I felt that was a genuine reaction. Jonah, for his part, seemed to be a good kid who took a wrong turn and just needed the right motivation to get back to the person he was meant to be. The way the two started to mesh was slow and sweet, and it seemed to be the perfect pace for the story of them.
Tyler is also dealing with new family dynamics, and we see his reactions mature a bit throughout the story. When the worst seems to happen, he has the backing of a new support system to see him through. Jonah’s family has a bit of stress due to social status, but things come together when it counts, and by the end, everyone is safe and happy with new friends and relationships.
As I said in my review of the first book, if you’re a fan of the Harrisburg Railers series, I really think you should pick this up. But, even if you’ve never read any of this duo’s other hockey romance series, this is a wonderful place to start. I’m anxiously awaiting Sean and Kenji’s story, and looking forward to seeing all these boys grow into the wonderful men they’ll become.
Happy Reading!
* I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest opinion. *
ARC received from the authors for an honest review.
Jonah is tired of pretending to be something he isn't. He's tired of being the bully. He's determined to change things and he starts in a very big way. He has to make Tyler see he's not who he used to be. He has to apologize and make Tyler believe it. He also has to get past Felix; his ex-friend, ex-partner in crime so to speak. He gets help from Soren, one of the classmates he bullied, in making amends.
Tyler is living his fabulous life on and off the ice rink. He knows who he is and isn't going to apologize for it. He's not sure that he wants an apology from Jonah or that he can trust it but he's all about the forgiveness. He's not so sure of the strained relationship he has with Felix though. Something has to give since his mother and Felix's dad are an item now.
This is another great read of life in high school. It's so real that you can feel for everyone on some level. Growing up isn't easy and when outside factors are pushing at you, it gets even harder. Jonah and Tyler work out their differences and become a cute couple. Felix and Soren are going stronger than ever. Miles gets his just dessert. The big question of who turned in Jonah and Miles for bullying gets answered and it was a good surprise. I'm looking forward to reading Kenzie and Shaun's story, as they both seem to be struggling with something big. I've said this before but it deserves repeating: Rj and Vicki are a great writing team. The book flows smoothly from chapter to chapter. I couldn't tell by the writing that there were two authors. I highly recommend this book, this series and all the co-written books by these two authors.
This is book two in the Chesterford Coyotes series and you can maybe read it as a standalone but I think you’d enjoy it more if you read book one, Off the Ice, first.
This is such a sweet story with just a touch of angst because of the bullying. We get to see more of the main characters from book one and we also get a few more glimpses of Ten and Jarred from the Harrisburg Railers series.
Jonah’s family is upset with him for participating in the bullying but they encourage him to make amends, which he does. He is truly sorry and ashamed for what he did and sincerely wants to let Tyler know that he’s not that person any longer. Jonah is also very sweet with his younger sisters and I loved that.
Things that were left hanging at the end of book one were resolved in On Thin Ice as we learn more about Tyler and his mother and her relationship with Felix’s father (Felix is Soren’s boyfriend from book one). We’re also teased with the introduction of a figure skater and the friction between him and one of the Coyotes players. Their book is coming up next and I’m looking forward to reading it.
It’s really hard to say much more about Jonah and Tyler without giving away spoilers so I’m just going to say if you enjoyed Off the Ice I don’t think you’ll want to miss reading this one.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
ON THIN ICE is the second book in the Chesterford Coyotes series. It can be read as a stand alone but I think it would read better if you read in the order the authors intended. On Thin Ice is a YA, high school hockey, teen-angst, enemies to friends to boyfriends read.
Jonah is newer to Chesterford and is there on a scholarship. He was shy and somehow got in with Felix and Miles. He hated the bullying Miles did but stood by while he did it. So he was as much to blame as Miles was. Jonah wants to be a better kinder human and the best way to do that was distance himself from Miles and make amends to those he hurt, starting with Tyler. On Thin Ice is a super cute at moments very heavy read. I loved how Tyler made Jonah work for his forgiveness. I can't wait to see what's next for this series! I am not a usual YA reader but I am so invested in these characters!
On Thin Ice is the second in the Chesterford Coyotes series and Jonah and Tyler's is every bit as good as book 1. It's a perfect YA read - cute with just the right amount of angsty goodness. In this book we see Jonah trying to atone for being one of the bad guys in book 1. He was dealing with his own problems but he still did some not great things in relation to Tyler. But he's a good guy really and so now he's trying to make things up to Tyler and hopes one day they can be friends. And Tyler could really do with some good friends. He's still reeling from him and his mum finally being free of his abusive dad. I really like Tyler as a character and despite his actions previously Jonah really was a great character as well. I'm pleased that he had to work at earning Tyler's forgiveness and friendship. I'm never sure going into books with the bully-friend-boyfriends trope but On Thin Ice handled it well and in a believable way.
Trigger warnings for bullying/parental abuse. We don’t really see any of Jonah’s sisters besides Polly (the youngest) who comes into his room a couple times. The others are mentioned but he doesn’t spend time with them up to 67%. Finally saw them at like 71%, but sucks because Jonah was such a good big brother and I wanted to see him interact with them more. Tyler’s mom was going to pick them up in chapter 19 but then Jonah said they were waiting for his mom.
Tyler’s dad sucked and those parts made me emotional. I did like this better than the first book since I liked both main characters and we saw quite a bit of the hockey team. 4 out of 5 stars?
Tyler: gay, hockey player, dad was abusive, bullied a lot, femme Jonah: bisexual, biracial (black dad & white mom), 3 younger sisters, photographer
I’m still kind of surprised at how much I’m enjoying this YA series. It took me a little longer to get into this story than it did the first one, because of the bullying component. Unfortunately this is a fairly accurate representation of what high school can be like, making it all the more difficult to read on the page. It was done well, which most likely adds to the difficulty.
I especially enjoyed seeing Soren again. His character is really a special one. Just like in their adult books, I very much like the hockey aspect that this writing duo dishes out so well. The teenage team banter is just as funny.
This series has me invested and I can’t wait for the next book!
I am loving this YA hockey series! On Thin Ice is book two in the Chesterford Coyotes series and I so enjoyed reading this story. This is full of sweetness, caring, friendship, and tons of teen-angst. I absolutely loved both Jonah and Tyler and their families were just fabulous! This book dealt with some difficult subjects and did a wonderful job doing it. I enjoyed seeing the growth from both characters. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!
The book was really good, though a little sad because of the bullying and other things. I loved Tyler, he’s the sweetest thing and has a good heart. I needed to give him hugs for all he went through. Jonah, it took me awhile to like him, then love him and knew he would be good for Tyler. I’m glad they got past everything and talked and Jonah owned up to his mistakes. A lovely YA read, I enjoyed and I can’t wait to read the next book next year!
Although Jonah and Tyler have a hate filled past, it is not until honest emotions and new beginnings come into play to change their connection in an instant. From enemies, to friends, to so much more is the journey the two young men must go through to get the HEA they both deserve. An emotional story that will pull on your heartstrings.
This is the second book in the Chesterford Coyotes young adult series. This book dealt with some difficult subjects and did a wonderful job doing it. My favorite thing about this book is reading about young love. The characters were wonderful and I love getting to see some of my old favorites. The pace was terrific. I can’t wait for the next installment in the series.
