War of the Last Day #3

Reign of Demons

Rate this book
The invincible Ogonians keep taking every city and castle in Gorania by storm.

The last obstacle standing between them and their promised paradise is the mighty fortress of Karun, the very stronghold Nardine has been intent on capturing. But as the tension rises between her, her disgruntled vassals, and her untrustworthy Skandivian allies, the last Queen of Bermania has to rally her people before she might worry about racing the Cursed Army to her new base.

Halgrim and Zahra must find a way out of the soon-to-be-doomed city of Inabol if they wish to continue their impossible journey to the Frozen Cave. In the west, Frankil and his new band follow the Wandering Seer on a mysterious mission. And far in the east, Leila finds herself in a tricky position, where she has to decide which Goranian faction is going to live and which is going to perish.

Every battle, every sacrifice, every decision, every mistake; all lead to the most decisive showdown since the dawn of this world. A showdown that might mark the end of the era of humans and declare the beginning of a new reign.

The reign of demons.

After seeing how much I enjoyed the first two books in this series, the author kindly offered me a copy of the eARC to read and enjoy, which I exuberantly accepted. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are subjective to myself as a reader.

I would recommend this series to readers who enjoy dark fantasy with high stakes and epic battles using both magic and physical strength.

"Do you know that feeling when you realize that one of the folktales that you used to mock could be true after all?"

Prophecies are easy to dismiss...until they come true.

The Cursed Army has arrived at the gates of the last standing fortress in Gorania.

The Last Day has come.

I have been eagerly anticipating this book ever since I binged the first two earlier this year. I hate when good things come to an end, but my goodness, Karim Soliman crafted a solid conclusion to this era in Gorania. I alternated between shock, surprise and horror. There were moments where I was verbally cheered for characters who pulled off exciting maneuvers, huge spells and well, I won't say my last one. I'll just simply say Leila.

"If death has a voice, it will be our war cries."

Even though this is the third book of the trilogy, Soliman still managed to develop his characters and their relationships further, building upon the foundation laid in prior books. I wish I could say more, but I can't figure out how to discuss my thoughts and feelings without mentioning the ending, which is so frustrating! I'll just have to settle for saying the characters are one of the strongest elements of this book and the series overall.

The magic system reached whole new heights with this installment. I think the characters themselves were shocked at what they managed to pull off, lol. I really wonder if this was planned by the author from the start, or if the fight scenes involving mages sort of "wrote themselves" when the author reached them in. Regarding this particular element, I would have to say Zahra took center stage, with Akira and Leila as runners up.

I've talked a lot about things I love, but there are a couple of things that didn't work well for me. I think there could have been some areas that could have been tightened up and trimmed down a touch. It felt just a bit too long in different character journeys, which I believe affected the pacing.

I will absolutely revisit this series again in the future and fully intend to get started on Soliman's other series, Tales of Gorania in the next year or so. I believe this series takes place before War of the Last Day, so I'm excited to see which characters it will feature!

Reign of Demons is the third and final installment in the War of the Last Days series, written by Karim Soliman. Ogonians seem unstoppable, a force that has decimated each Goranian city; the fortress of Karun is the last obstacle between them and their promised land. The same stronghold Nadine is trying to control, in an unstable ally with the Skandivians; tension between sides is rising.

At the same time, after what they were told by Nelly, Zahra and Halgrim are trying to continue their voyage to the Frozen Cave, with an itinerary that will bring them to the city of Inabol; and which later will take them to discover more about the secrets hidden under the Goranian Land. The Frozen Marble can be the answer to the Goranian problem, but the cost of using it is too high.
Leila is in a complicated position. After being kidnapped into the Koyan side, she's offered a deal: saving a few Goranians if she collaborates with the destruction of the rest; when a defeat seems probable, taking a stance on it becomes quite difficult. And it becomes even worse when she's sent to Karun in order to end with the resistance to the Ogonian army.

All of those threads, plus some additional ones (Frankil with the Wandering Seer), get woven in this last installment, and all of them bring us to a decisive moment that will shape Gorania as we know: the battle of Karun. But despite being this one of the most decisive moments in the saga, Soliman also takes this book as a way to continue expanding Goranian history and lore, foreshadowing things that I hope get explored more in a future new series.
And what I can say about the battle of Karun, and all that surrounds it without being too spoily; an epic battle told from the POV of several characters that acts as the perfect close point to the series, about 120 pages where you just want to continue reading and see how all it ends, low-key hoping your characters survive. It will keep you on the edge of your seat for all of it.

While I think this is a really strong book, I found the pacing to be a little irregular around the middle section, as the expansion Soliman brings to Gorania can drag the plot a little; outside of that detail, it's an authentic pageturner.

Reign of Demons is the golden tip that puts an end to the War of the Last Days saga; if you like epic fantasy, you should try this series. I can only congratulate Karim Soliman for the amazing payoff this book has been for the rest of the series.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Reign of Demons (War of the Last Day #3) by Karim Soliman is the third (fourth if you count the prequel) and final installment of what has become one of my favorite epic fantasies. I'm so glad I jumped at the chance to return to this world for the grand finale because the author really sent it off in style. It's a long read, but it's worth every second and it feels like it just flies by. The world-building and the character development is as usual outstanding. I especially love all of the little details we learn here. This series needs to be on any fan of the genre's must read list as every installment just seems to outdo itself. There honestly needs to be more stars to accurately reflect just how much I loved this!

I've been enjoying the War of the Last Day series by Karim Soloman up to this point. And though I've been hearing chatter about the finale, this one kind of snuck up on me. The author reached out to me with an opportunity to read an eARC but I knew I'd have to really try and squeeze it in before the official release date. Well I found a way! I feel this was Karim's best work so far. I hope to touch on why I feel this way over the next couple of sections.

The pacing is certainly fast in this finale. This entire series reads very easily in my opinion. This book is considerably thicker than the others previously released in this series. It never really felt that way to me though. This was another read where the pages just kept turning every time I picked it up. There is an awful lot going on with the finale though. We have so many characters to keep track of in the finale. Not only the characters we've been routinely following but we have some return from stories in the past as well. This was a nice little surprise.

The world building continued to expand in the finale. Not so much in geographical scope but the details of this world in general. As our characters near the end of this story, they learn a lot of history right along with us. And being a fan of history myself, this was very appealing to me!

The character development was running right along side with the continual world building mentioned above. We have a lot of characters who are finding some closure to different things that have been lingering throughout this series and finding out their place in the now as well as the future. We have our fair share of characters we are cheering on and of course some that want us to pull our hair out (if you have any) due to the decisions or lack there of they might be making!

When I finished this one, I couldn't help but get goosebumps on the final line. I had to reach out to Karim at the moment to tell him so and that I thought it was his most complete work I've read so far.

If you've enjoyed any book in this series, I'd recommend continuing on until you finish it. Don't let the density of the finale scare you away either. It's worth it my friends!

What a ride!

There is plenty of action, intrigue, anticipation and conflict. However, I think my favorite part of this series are the characters. Just so well written and dynamic with so many great viewpoints.

There were definitely some twists I did NOT expect but overall it was a highly enjoyable and thrilling novel. It was a fast paced (and somewhat shocking!) end to a very well written series overall.

There is nowhere left to run.

In this epic conclusion to the ‘War of the Last Day’ series, we are dropped back into a world on fire. Chaos and evil are covering the land; death and betrayal seep into every circle. As humanity fights for its very existence can nations put aside their history long enough to save themselves? Or is this The Last Day?

An amazing conclusion. This entire series has been an epic fantasy thrill ride and it went out fighting! With immersive writing and deep world building, I’ve loved every page. The battles are intense and heart pounding- with multiple POVs so you experience every detail of what’s happening. I’m still recovering from the ending and I absolutely recommend this series!

Thank you to the Author for the eArc, my opinions are honest, and my own.

I can say very little about this book without giving too much away. An excellent read which nicely wraps up the trilogy. The world building and characters are extremely compelling and with the maps provided it is easy to visualise. Dark fantasy, sword and sorcery, epic battles, it's all in there.

Reign of Demons is the third and final book in this this series. With King Masolen and Queen Rona both dead it is up the daughter Nardine to find a way to stop the army of the Cursed, who is continuing to burn and pillage their way across the rest of the known lands. Karun is the last stand for mankind, the prophecy says Demons will take over. This is an awesome end to a great fantasy series. An eclectic cast of characters, non stop action/intrigue/mystery and the very well written storyline will keep you cheering for mankind !

5/5 stars. This review contains marked spoilers.

Just when I thought that the War of the Last Day series peaked at Tattered Banners, Karim Soliman decided to drop Reign of Demons, a book that ended the series on an incredibly high note.

PLOT AND WORLDBUILDING
There is only 1 or 2 weeks left until the cursed 'Last Day', all thanks to the demons that have come to impose utter destruction on the world of Gorania. The stakes are as high as ever, and there is almost no guarantee that the Goranians can stop them in time.

One of the main reasons I love this series so much is because of how intricate and interesting the worldbuilding is, and how seamlessly the author embeds shreds of background knowledge into the writing. This did not stop in Reign of Demons, where once I picked the book up I literally could not put it down until all of my questions regarding specific mechanics were answered. I find the world's setting and background history so intriguing to the point where I feel like I could write a whole book analyzing it and coming up with wild theories and possible connections.

I was able to keep up with the pacing of the plot most of the time, though I will admit I sometimes had to pause and refresh my memory on where our characters were at certain points in time, as their timelines don't always overlap. Also, the PLOT TWIST??? I had goosebumps all over. Perhaps I'm dumber than most but I NEVER expected that to happen.
[REALLY IMPORTANT SPOILER THAT YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED REIGN OF DEMONS.]

CHARACTERS
Main Characters
Halgrim: In the first two books, I kind of felt, well... indifferent towards Halgrim. I didn't dislike him but I didn't particularly like his character either. I found his actions ridiculous sometimes, but other than that, I don't really have much to say about him. His chapters were always interesting though. I found that the events tied around him formed quite an enjoyable read.
To be honest, the only reason I enjoyed reading his chapters this book was because he was usually with Zahra (*insert heart eyes*), another character whom I absolutely love.

Nardine: In the first two books, I absolutely despised her. Every time I saw her name written in bold at the start of a chapter, my heart sank. I understand that her behavior could be somewhat justified by the fact that she is just a 16 year old teenager, but her stinky "I'm not like other girls I like horses!" attitude just really struck a nerve with me.
HOWEVER, in this book, my feelings towards her changed. Her character started to mature, and I found her really cool at times. Like, I actually started to respect her.

Leila: Leila is one of my top favorite characters in the series. I felt like I could really relate to her shy, book-nerd personality, and I found her abnormal intelligence and passion for knowledge so fascinating. Since I am so used to reading YA fantasy, it felt quite refreshing to see how Leila acted in Reign of Demons. Her character arch is one that I enjoyed thoroughly and I am so grateful she didn't end up like every other bland performative-girlboss YA protagonist that suddenly becomes all-knowing and all-powerful like 0.1 seconds into the book (or, to be fair, 0.1 seconds into the THIRD book.)

Notable Side Character
Zahra: Zahra was my favorite character in Tattered Banners, and my feelings stayed the same in this book. Not to be biased, but as an Arab, the moment I read the name 'Zahra' (which happens to be one of my favorite Arabic names), her character piqued my interest; and, suffice to say, she did NOT disappoint. I enjoyed reading her chapters alongside Halgrim where they pursued their perilous journey and their entertaining back-and-forth banter kept the story feeling lively. I admired her love for her family and her incredible talent in her craft.

Although I had ups and downs with my personal fondness of certain characters in the previous books, Reign of Demons was a game changer for me. The main characters and prominent side characters have such complex personalities that are so human that I was rooting for them all the entire time. I am also very satisfied with a lot of the characters' progression in this book.

WRITING STYLE
Karim Soliman’s writing style is simple and easy to read. There isn’t anything fancy about it, but his writing style really fits the somewhat medieval setting most of his books take place in.
It’s also important to note that Reign of Demons has a lot of POVs, especially during the battle scenes. I find that all of the POVs we were given were necessary to the storyline in some way or another, and I quite enjoy reading multi POV books anyway. I do understand if it might be hard for someone who is used to single POV stories to keep up with it, though.

CONCLUSION
Reign of Demons is a great piece of fantasy literature, and an incredible closing to the War of the Last Day series. I look forward to reading more of his books in the future.
