A SWAT officer in small-town Tennessee will do anything to protect the innocent beauty whose life has been put on the line in Lena Diaz's Tennessee Takedown
It can't be a coincidence that in the past twenty-four hours, three different thugs have tried to kill or abduct Ashley Parrish. Sexy SWAT team leader Dillon Gray saved her, but now he wonders why someone would want to murder the beautiful accountant…and why he finds her so infuriatingly attractive.
Then the FBI comes after Ashley for embezzlement, and Dillon knows he must protect her from a killer and prove she's being framed. Taking her on a hair-raising run through dangerous terrain barely fazes him. But wanting her for more than just one night scares the hell out of him.
Romantic suspense author, Lena Diaz, is a four time winner of the Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence in Mystery and Suspense. She's also a former Romance Writers of America Golden Heart® finalist and has won numerous other awards.
Excellent book with enough action to keep me riveted until I'd finished it in one sitting. Ashley is in Destiny performing a company audit when she gets caught in the middle of an office shooting. She's rescued by SWAT team leader Dillon just in time to be kidnapped and rescued again. Dillon is determined to protect her and find out who's behind all this trouble.
I really liked both Ashley and Dillon. Ashley has built her CPA business and is very good at what she does. One of the things I liked best about her is that she she isn't a wimpy damsel in distress. She really keeps her head during the office shooting and later during the other attempts to kidnap her. She notices Dillon right away and can't deny her attraction to him. I loved the scene in the cave where he promises to behave and she tells him "Don't expect me to make the same promise."
Dillon is a small town detective who is also the leader of their SWAT team. He is fascinated by Ashley from the beginning, but he resists getting involved with her. He had suffered a tragic loss years earlier and avoids getting close to anyone so he doesn't experience that kind of pain again. He can't stay away and his protective instincts kick in when she's also accused of embezzlement.
I loved the connection that they both felt from the very beginning. Their attraction was strong but both had reasons they didn't want to make a commitment. Dillon was protecting himself from more hurt. Ashley had grown up in a small town and hated it and wasn't looking to repeat the experience. By the end, Ashley had realized that it didn't really matter where she lived as long as there was love. Dillon had a harder time letting down his walls. I loved the scene at the end when his friend Chris tells him what an idiot he is.
The action and suspense in the book is excellent. From the opening pages there is always something going on. I loved seeing Ashley and Dillon work together to escape. The mystery of who was behind it was well done. Part of it was not too hard to figure out, but there was an interesting twist at the end. It wasn't a complete surprise to me, but I had almost ruled out my suspicions by that time. There was also some wonderful humor. The banter between Ashley and Dillon was fun. The teamwork among the cops was great and the whole bit with the FBI agent at the station was hilarious. There was also a nice little shout-out to Paula Graves' Bitterwood P.D. series at one point.
This was very much like a SWAT episode, very much action and adventure packed, and the butterfly inducing romance and steam and tension was so so so goood, enjoyed it so much.
The romance build up is so well done, so much sweet and meaningful moments and then the tension oml, the cave moment, staying at his house, when she was using his kitchen and the killer trope : both of them escaping and having to sleep on the same bed, forced proximity so well done.
On the other hand, take into consideration that it is not only a romance, it has so much action and because of that, so much drama and so many twists I honestly didn't see coming bc I was so focused and Dillon being sweet to Ashley, but they were so well put imo.
Action packed and loaded with conflicts between the hero and heroine. LOVE any Lena Diaz romantic suspense and frankly, I think this Intrigue is her best yet.
This book was fantastic. Ashley Parrish is an independent accountant consultant and she’s in the middle of a shoot out at the company she’s temporarily working at. It gets bad. That’s when Detective Dillon Gray rescues her, and she tries to help him. Someone is out to get her and she doesn’t even know why. When the FBI comes looking for her things get really bad. So Dillon tries to help her in any way he can. His whole team is on her side.
Buy and see what happens. It’s heartbreaking when she learns the truth of the one person who she thought she knew.
Then endearing and made me smile at the end. The sweetest ending.
This was a fun, action packed book. From the first few pages, till the end of the book, something was always happening. Giving just enough time between action scenes so I could catch my breath.
Ashley is in the small town of Destiny, performing a company audit when she gets caught in a office shooting. I loved the way she was able to remin calm during the shooting. She knew when to run, and she knew when to hide. She was the one, that called 911, for help. Ashley was rescued by the SWAT leader Dillon. Ashley thought Dillion was in trouble, so she came to his rescue, even tho he didn't need her help. He could not belive an unarmed woman would face danger head on, to help him. There was an instant conection between Ashley and Dillon. The banter between the two was fun. I loved the touch of romance between this fearless lady, and the leader of the SWAT team.
Ashley and Dillon went on the run, with hopes to give themself enough time to figure out the case, and stay one step ahead of the thugs that wanted to kidnap Ashely. I loved the code name's the other SWAT team members came up with. Like Billy the kid, and Daisy Duke. Just adding to the fun of this book.
The twist in this book caught me by surprize. The suspense of this story was excellent! If you enjoy a good Action packed story, with romance, I would highly recommend this book.
Sample from chapter 3 - Dillon looked past her into the steady, dark eyes of the driver. He had a hold of Ashley's waist and was playing a deadly game of tug -of-war. "Let her go." Dillon yelled. "I'll pull her out, then come back for you. The truck's back wheels aren't going to hold much longer. "We'll take our chances in the river." The mans voice was deadly calm, as if he wasn't the least bit concerned. He heaved backward, puling Ashley farther into the truck, slamming Dillon against the door. His grip slipped. Ashley frntically flailed her arms. He reached for her and grabbed her hands. The wheels made a great big sucking noise as they popped free from the mud.
Lena Diaz is quickly becoming the most reliable Intrigue author! Tennessee Takedown is another action-packed romantic suspense tale. It gets off to a rip-roaring start as Ashley Parrish survives a workplace shooting, only to get kidnapped by another killer! SWAT team leader Dillon Gray risks life and limb to rescue her and continue to protect her. It slowly becomes apparent that Ashley is at the centre of a complex frame job involving embezzling and double-crosses!
I took a star off for some slight flaws. With so many people wanting Ashley dead, it was hard to keep up with what everyone was doing and why they were doing it! Diaz's plots do tend to become a little too convoluted, and that was the case here. In the middle of the book, the pacing flags a bit. A lot of the dialogue is too cutesy, or sounds like it came straight out of a 90's action movie! Most annoying of all, the hero is YET AGAIN a martyr. Romance authors really need to move away from heroes who are afraid to love because they've lost someone in their past! It's REALLY overused! And people just aren't like this in real life! We all meet new people, love new people, lose people. It's a way of life. It only seems to be in romance novels that I come across heroes who stubbornly refuse to open their hearts because of ONE incident several years ago. I just roll my eyes. In my opinion, it just makes them a coward! PLEASE give me a more believable emotional conflict than this!
Sorry, rant over.
Otherwise, this is a really good Intrigue title from an author who continually delivers!
Talk about action packed! Tennessee Takedown by Lena Diaz was off the charts in the action department. I really enjoyed this book but I thought it could have used a little more heat and been longer. Ashley is contacted to do an audit in a small town that reminds her of her hometown. Next thing she knows, there is a gunman in the building "hunting" her as she tries to hide and slowly move her way to escape. The local SWAT team arrives and she meets Dillon as he is trying to save her but she decides that he needs saved. Dillon can't keep Ashley off his mind when he hears that she needs rescued again.
The body count racks up in this fast paced suspense. Ashley Parrish is in a small town in Tennessee to do an audit and gets caught up in an office shooting. She doesn’t know the shooter so when its over she thinks she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Well that doesn’t turn out to be the case when she’s then kidnapped and almost drowns when the car wrecks in the river during a storm and many more attempts are made on her life before the tangled web of what is really going on is revealed. This was a quick read full of edge of your seat suspense.
You will find more of my reviews at my blog The Book Chick.
I have read Lena Diaz other series (Deadly Games) and I LOVED it. There is four books in that series, filled with hot alpha males, strong women, incredible thrilling suspense and complicated character relationships. Three of the four books got a 5/5 score and the last one, number four got 4/5. That is how good that series was. Can you imagine my surprise that I found this first book in one of her other series, extremely lacking and disappointing?
I had expected the same level of writing skill and imagination but there was nothing. Nothing! My mind is blank! I feel nothing other than disappointment toward this book. It starts right in the middle of a shootout and then there is action throughout the whole book. There is never a break and I think that is maybe the point that rubs me the wrong way. Ashley is just to TSTL (too stupid to live) and I Dillon is just a used up character with no real depth. I could not connect with them and they more irritated me than anything else. The plot was quite interesting until the end, when it just got too much. I mean, come on, can you be that stupid? I do like the whole stolen identity plot even though it was predictable right from the start.
What really saved this book is the other characters. Chris, Chief Thornton, Donna and so on. I don't know if Diaz did it on purpose, but it did feel like she put more thought in those characters than what she did in her main ones. That is the only reason I feel I would like to read the second book in this series. The second book is about Chris and I do want to read more about him. *Wink*
What an exciting and never leave the edge of your seat book! Lena Diaz has done a fabulous job with this book and I will certainly be looking for more books by her.
Almost as quickly as Ashley is rescued from a morning work place shooting, she is kidnapped. With sexy police officer and SWAT team leader, Dillion Gray finding himself right in the chase the second time she faces trouble. Defying orders, Dillion finds himself in the path of danger with Ashley, but he does not expect to find love with this lady that has put him in harm's way twice in one day.
Suddenly, Ashley discovers that someone is framing her and it looks as though she may be going to jail instead of leaving the town of Destiny. Dillion rescues her again, but he can't keep the kidnappers away as they find Ashley again. Her life is full of people framing her and trying to kill her or keep her alive for a bit anyway. What can she possibly have that the kidnappers want?
Discoveries made during the last kidnapping will show Ashley just who her friends truly aren't. Should she fall for Dillion or should she leave this town and never return; after all, small towns aren't her thing these days. Does Dillion truly have what she needs or have consequences and situations caused her to feel the way she does?
I’m rating this book based on other Harlequin books I’ve read but it would be a at least a 4 + even for non Harlequin romance genre (cookie cutter romance). I decided to read something short and light, and wow, I’m glad I picked this! It is a romantic suspense that is nonstop action from the very first page to the end. The reader is dropped immediately into action. Not only that but it also has a lot of tongue in cheek humor. Probably have to be at least 40 to catch the Roscoe P. Coltrane reference but I was grinning. Actually, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. But it was a very fun and fast read. Recommend if you like romantic suspense and or romantic comedy.
CPA Ashley Parrish is finishing up an audit when the company is shot up by a gunman, leaving 8 dead. Within 24 hours she is again attacked and kidnapped. Dillon Gray leads the SWAT team that brought down the gunman then gets a tip about the kidnapping and goes in pursuit. Who is after Ashley? When the FBI then show up convinced Ashley is an embezzler and her pursuers are miffed partners, Ashley is stunned and Dillon again comes to her aid. A very fast-action plot with great characters. Like this author a lot and look forward to more in this series.
My rating for this story is 3.5 stars 🌟. I liked this book's storyline. I enjoyed the action in this story. I liked the hot 🔥 & steamy scenes. I enjoyed Dillon's character. Ashley's character was okay. Ashley got on my nerves in this story. I liked the ending.
A romantic suspense that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Lots of edge of your seat action and tongue in cheek humor. An odd but entertaining mix! Very enjoyable
First my disclaimer: I’m an RWA chapter-mate (First Coast Romance Writers of America) of Ms. Diaz. That in no way influenced my review (well, if it hadn’t been a good book, I wouldn’t be posting the review on my blog, but other than that it didn’t influence me).
This is my second Diaz book and this was as good as the first. Ms. Diaz made this a suspenseful romp with constant twists and turns in the revelation and explanation as to why Ashley has been targeted multiple times by killers in the past day or so.
Ashley was a great heroine. Understandably, she just wanted to finish her accounting audit (which she had just done when a gunman invaded the building she was in) and go home after having spent several weeks in the small Tennessee town. Unfortunately, killers were after her and she ended up having to stay, and ends up bunking with Dillon. (Personal note: killers in pursuit – bad. Hot cop roommate – OMG. Almost worth it). She didn’t let the situation demoralize her, though she was understandably confused, especially when she gets accused of embezzlement, since she’d never embezzled anything.
Dillon – strong, stubborn, and determined to protect Ashley even when she doesn’t think she needs or wants it. I loved how his entire police force closed ranks with him to help protect Ashley when the FBI came to call, and the tag names for their walkie-talkie conversations were hilarious. I loved his horse ranch and was so sad when I learned the reason for its name.
I didn’t guess just who or what all was involved in this book, so that’s quite something. Then again, Harlequin Intrigues somehow usually do keep me guessing and that’s one of the reasons I like them.
So, overall, I have to say this is a great book that never drags and will keep you guessing right up until the end (4.5 stars). I can’t wait to read Ms. Diaz’s next work.

Tennessee Takedown is the first Lena Diaz book that I have had the good fortune to read and hopefully it won't be my last. I loved, loved, loved this book! The pace was fast, the characters were likeable, and the plot was fun to read.
Ashley Parrish is an auditor. She loves her job! It gives her the chance to travel to different companies, do her job and then move on. She never thought she would be in the position that her current job has put her in - hiding under a desk while a gunman is shooting people all around her. Making out of that whole thing alive was nothing short of a miracle. A miracle by the name of Dillon Gray.
Dillon Gray took a huge risk ignoring his chief's command and charged into the building to take down the gunman that was shooting innocent people. He just couldn't wait and let more people die. By all accounts it seems that Ashley is the primary target and it's his job to find out why, find the killer, and keep her safe in the meantime. Keeping his hands to himself may be even more of a challenge.
This book was provided to me by NetGalley.com in exchange for my honest review and I'm so happy it was. I love when I read a new author and immediately fall in love. Lena's style of writing just draws you in and won't let loose. I really, really hope to read more by this author.
I liked Tennessee Takedown. It is full of danger, action, drama, and mystery. Some of the mystery I figured out part of it. There was way more twists and turns I did not figure out. The action and suspense start on page 1 and hardly lets up till the end. Your not sure who is the good guys and the bad guys are.
I like how at the front of the book lists the characters and a little about them. I would love to come back and see more books dealing with the swat team. I liked most of the characters. Not the bad ones.
The body count ends up pretty high so a warning on that. There is also a love scene.
Ashley is smart and likeable character. She risks her life a few times to try and save the cops at different time. She deals with the tuff events pretty well. She does break down a few times and no one can blame her for that.
Dillon is a detective, a member of SWAT team and rancher plus a few surprises. He has trust issues. He risks his life a few times to save Ashley life.
I also liked all the Dukes of Hazard names thrown in.
Ashley goes from one danger after another and has no clue why someone is after her.
I would read another book by Lena Diaz based on this book.
I was given this ebook to read for purpose of giving a honest review by Netgalley and Harlequin. 1/21/2014 PUB Harlequin Intrigue
This romantic suspense story gets off to a strong start as a spree killer walks through an office building firing at people. Tennessee's Smoky Mountains are the setting. No sooner has a SWAT team dealt with the situation than an accountant who has come from Nashville on a temporary contract is abducted from her home. Only that one of the police officers decided to check on her after the stress earlier, nobody would have known.
There is a great deal of running around the mountainsides, getting across flooding rivers and riding trails through this story, so it is definitely one for outdoors fans. While I'm sure police everywhere are barred from starting relationships with witnesses to major crimes, that needn't get in the way of a good yarn. This is an action-packed story with tender moments and a nicely-judged depth of characterisation on the side of the good folks. The bad guys do come across as stereotyped, but maybe that is true of most violent criminals.
Tennessee Takedown begins with a shootout and from there, it's action and more action - barely enough for me to take a breath to get to know the 2 leads Dillon and Ashley better. Through the heroic rescues and the breathless escapes, I still wasn't able to get a handle on both of them, let alone the chemistry that I found lacking. There is a solid plot here, but it's unfortunately weakened by the superficial development characters and a tenuous connection between them that wasn't too believable at all. Dillon's hurried turnaround in the last few pages of the book was too rushed and Ashley's eagerness to have him anyway in her life seemed more desperate than dignified - all to create an illusory HEA that I wasn't exactly buying.
In Diaz’s romantic suspense novel, in just twenty-four hours three separate attackers have tried to kill or abduct Ashley Parish. SWAT team leader Dillion Gray has managed to keep her safe each time but can’t help wondering why this is happening. Before long the FBI steps in accusing her of embezzlement and Dillion knows now that he must protect her at all costs from a killer so determined he’s successfully framed her for a crime she didn’t commit. To save her, he takes her on a dangerous run that places his own heart in the line of fire.
Lena Diaz offers readers a truly balanced romantic thriller. Romance doesn't suffer from Action and vice versa. Ms. Diaz has created a really likeable set of characters both primary and secondary. The book is evenly paced - fast, and cleverly plotted. The characters are engaging, the premise intriguing, the settings detailed, the dialogue crisp and the action non-stop. *I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
Wow what a read. From the breath taken Sean's of the Smoky Mountains to the home of Sexy Swat/Detective Dillion Gray and the rest of his team comes the Beauty Ashley Parrish and all he'll brakes lose. What can a girl to do but to fall in love with the small town of Destiny Tennessee. A book you really can't put down until the very end.
"Diaz keeps the tension taut, the clues slim and the attraction strong to keep readers on the edge of their seats to the startling climax." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 stars
