I feel bad about this review, I really do. But I also don't want to rate it and leave it with no explanation. I just can't in good conscience rate this any higher than 1 star. I almost didn't finish it, because I wasn't enjoying it at all. At first I thought I might have just hated the writing style, which it very well might be, but then there were other things I noticed that just didn't sit right with me.

The way this is written, it seems more like the characters are looking back and telling their story. I felt so removed from the story that I couldn't get into it at all. Then it would try to jump you into the moment, and it just didn't work. Since it seemed like them telling the story, there were a lot of moments when there were large time jumps and nothing really bridged those gaps. There would be a scene, and then there would be something that happened later that evening. I can't stand things like that in books. It doesn't flow right and feels jarring.

Also with how it was written, I think it would be better to listen to the book. The dialogue came across as awkward and formal, until I read it out loud and was able to give it a bit of tone and emphasis certain words. Dramatizing the story like that made it sound really good for the most part. There were a few points that the writing was a little weird, but that happens in every book. Unfortunately, reading the book I didn't feel any emotion whatsoever. I couldn't be drawn in and relate to the characters at all because of how it was written.

The characters were okay. I do feel like their reactions were a bit over dramatic. I never got a good sense of anything because they were a bit wishy-washy. I didn't see their relationship develop because everything happened suddenly throughout the story. I think that had to do with how much was within this small amount of pages. A lot of the story could have been developed more and it would have come across a bit better. It all happened too fast to be believable. However, some of those situations and drama points were really good and would have worked well spread over a 300 page novel. I would have liked to see a bit more foreshadowing. One thing I love in books is foreshadowing, and there was very minimal of it in this story. I felt like a lot of things were mentioned when it was necessary for the understanding of the story. Only a few things were built up, and those things were some of the things I liked.

This kind of has an enemies-to-lovers type of romance to it. I think the enemies part was done well... maybe too well? I couldn't stand Bryan. It was to the point that I didn't want them to end up together. It doesn't seem like the negative things were dealt with at all. The romance wasn't believable. I truly lost respect for Lily because she just kind of brushed over everything and decided he couldn't be a bad guy because he does something good. No. Just...no. This girl has been through so much, too much. I don't think with the trauma she has that she should end up with a guy like him. I hated everything about their relationship.

Everything could have used more development. The ending felt rushed and far too easy. The tense moments that should have been drawn out to get more emotion in there were too short. I didn't get any strong emotion from the story at all, probably because I felt so removed from it, but that emotion was needed to make most of the story matter. I didn't understand their emotions much when they did show some, they just didn't make sense to me. It seemed like they would blow up over the littlest thing. They emotion just didn't seem natural at all. It was more of a meaningless reaction, rather than an expression of built up emotions. The storyline would have had more impact had there been more emotion behind things. The reader needed to be reading and feel what the characters were feeling, but that gap was never bridged.

I really feel bad because the bones for a good story were present, but I felt like it just didn't deliver. I want the best for this book and the author who took the time to write it. I do think there is potential here. Perhaps I didn't like it due to the style of writing. It might not be my cup of tea.

I am actually disappointed by how much I didn't like this. It is the genre of book I usually love. The cover is adorable. It looks like it would be right up my alley. But it wasn't. I don't know if I will be able to give the author a second chance. I don't know if that would even be fair. I certainly hope it was just this book I had issue with. But it might very well be that this author just isn't one I can read. I do think there is potential for audiobooks, as long as there are fewer time jumps throughout the story.

As with anything, certain skills will develop with time. I think this author has potential if she works on her craft a bit more. Like I mentioned, there was a lot of good storylines. The plot of the book was good, there was a lot going on, providing enough to keep the story going. Leaning into some of those subplots, such as the ex-husband and the epidemic, could have easily made this Romantic Suspense. So, there is a lot to play with here.

The book is short, but it is a complete story, there isn't a cliffhanger. There was no sex. Minimal language, and it was used in an understandable way, when it was warranted, not thrown in just for the fun of it.

Nurse vs Billionaire

I borrowed an advance copy of this brand new book by a new author. Though the book feels like a work in progress, I see this could be a lovely, meaningful story of a woman's survival and the author has great potential.

This novella felt like a proper first rough draft of a story that needs lots of fleshing out, lots of “killing your darlings”, and lots of fun added.
This book needs a proper round of editing to add flow, remove clunkiness, get rid of all the clichés, and just make it into something nice.

No one was likeable to me.

I did not care for Lily, her kid, her tragic past. Her ex-husband is a evil abusing stalking shadow– lack of story but enough crumbs to keep me confused. Her dad is mean, her mom seems nice but lets her husband bully her daughter. Bryan, the brother’s best friend slash high school ex-boyfriend slash billionaire slash love interest again did nothing for me. He basically buys the hospital where Lily is working just to be close to her? Ma’am that is called stalking. Or what else should I think here?

And they are supposed to live happily ever after?

And do not get me started on the, Bryan you have to marry the sister of Lily’s evil ex-husband or we shall lose all the family’s money! And there is also an criminal businessman sub-plot involving some of Bryan’s other investments?

I cannot keep up.

Too many dramatic moments, too much forgiveness from Lily’s end when Bryan messed up.

Too many ideas tried to mash up in a too short a story.

I received an ARC of this book (thanks!) and these are my own opinions.

Emma and Bryan . . .

Emma and her daughter have moved back to Seaview so divorced Emma can start over again. The last person she ever wants to see again is Bryan, her high school sweetheart who broke her heart in what felt like a mean way as he gave in to peer pressure. But when she takes a job at the hospital where she previously worked as a nurse, she finds that Bryan has become her new boss. Even more of a shock, Bryan is asking for a second chance! But does he deserve it? Will she be able to trust him after how he handled their breakup? Does he deserve her forgiveness?

I didn’t think Bryan was a very trustworthy or likable character. I’m also not sure it’s a good idea for him to be trying to date one of the staff. I also didn’t feel like they really connected; not very romantic.

I enjoyed the story. It was a quick clean read with no steamy scenes nor offensive language. The story is about second chances. Bryan is Jake’s best friend. Lily is Jake’s sister. Bryan dated Lily in high school, but because of peer pressure he hurt her. Lily is returning to her hometown after a failed marriage. She never expected to run into Bryan again.——I did not like Bryan. I feel like he was portrayed as to much as a cheating playboy. He was also arrogant and doesn’t seem like he matured much after high school. He let his friends determine who he dated in high school and also felt like because of who he no one should ever reject him. Lily ran hot and cold throughout the story.

This is a quick clean story about second chances and how sometimes you have to hold on for the good stuff. Lily has been in an abusive marriage and is now divorced. She has returned to her hometown to rebuild her life and take care of her daughter. Of course, that comes with its own challenges because her father isn't much better than her ex and her mother enables his abuse by allowing it to continue. Lily learns to stand on her own with the help of former boyfriend and new boss, Bryan. Can they have a do-over and do better the second time? Can Lily catch a break for once in her life?

Very clean second chance romance book. While an enjoyable read I felt as though there were some holes in the store. Issues between the two mains were resolved super quick and easy. Lily surviving what she did made sense as to why she had her walls built up so high. I just feel as though I never fully understood why she disliked Bryan’s so much in the beginning.

I enjoyed the story. It was a quick clean read with no steamy scenes or offensive language. The story is about second chances with very dramatic moments.

My only negative point is that I think there are too many ideas tried to mash up in a story so short! I’d have liked to have more development.

Worst book I’ve ever read. I felt like I was reading elementary school writing prompts. The story had no details, skipped complete events, no character development, and was just plain stupid! The only reason I finished it was because I couldn’t believe how bad this was and thought it would have to get better! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Exceptional

What a great story! Sometimes you need a modern fairy tale in your life and this is it. It has all the makings of a Disney movie. I received a free copy of this book and my reviews are given freely.
