While it had great tips and advice, it felt repetitive. Self-help books are often like this and I'm not sure if it's because the authors really want to get their message across or because to sell a book you need to have enough content written to FILL a book.

I did appreciate the professional references (though I haven't yet looked at them to ensure that they are reliable) and I can tell the last chapter with a quick, week-at-a-glance will be helpful once baby is here. Also helpful was the chapter on nutrition that calls out specific vitamins and minerals you want to ensure you're getting in your diet in order to aid your recovery.

This book, more than anything, is a reminder to care for yourself right along with your new baby, and to accept help from others.

Eh, it was fine. It was a mixed bag for me. On one hand, there were pieces of information and topics that felt helpful and I hadn’t previously considered, it gave me some new insights and ideas to plan for the fourth trimester. On the other, the layout of the book and the subsections of chapters felt a bit disjointed to me, I literally cringed at the section meant to be given to your partner (why was it written so condescendingly and in such an accusing tone?!), and towards the middle the book started to feel repetitive.

This is full of practical advice across a variety of topics for the postpartum experience. I wish I'd had this with my first pregnancy because it would have been even more helpful then. I particularly liked the last chapter where I broke down ideas for what self-care could look like at specific weeks postpartum.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Well done with a section for dads to read, too

This book manages to be uplifting and honest at the same time. It states flat out that "healthcare sucks in the U.S." Then it includes the chapter on dads stepping up to do housework, cooking, shopping and baby care, including nighttime bottle feeds. Many books on having a baby soft-pedal fathers' responsibilities in co-parenting. This one doesn't. Bravo, Robyn Weller.

This book had some useful tips for surviving postpartum, I will say that. The advice itself was good, it's the repeating and rewording of the same things over and over that made this book feel like it could have been an e-mail. I felt that the chapter on parenting was a little misplaced as well. It's a book about postpartum care, not about parenting. Just feels like the author didn't know what else to add to make her essay hit word count.

Excellent Gift for Pregnant Moms

Great book to read during the 3rd trimester when you’re excited to meet your baby and still have time to plan for postpartum. Walks you through practical tips to implement during the 4th trimester including schedules, nutrition, dealing with unsolicited advice, soothing irritated nipples, pericare and more. Would make a good baby shower gift.

I picked this up because I don't have any first hand experience with the postpartum period and don't know what to expect. I don't know how I'll feel, what I'll be capable of, or what my partner's experience will be like. People talk a lot about pregnancy but postpartum stuff is sort of hidden away!

The message was pretty validating - themes of prioritizing self care, body positivity through a time of extreme change, communicating your needs well with your partner and support circle etc.

There's an enlightening passage that addresses gatekeeping / weaponized incompetence dynamics that come up when one partner is responsible for most of the childcare due to varying leave policies at work. Parent on leave - remember there are multiple ways to do something right and that your partner is entitled to discover their own way. Parent not on leave - remember that not knowing how to do something is not an excuse for not proactively learning how to do it. Seems like a helpful reminder for everyone. (That said, I did feel a need to tell my very conscientious husband that I don't think he needs the lecture on weaponized incompetence before I handed the book over, haha.)

Loving and logical postpartum by midwife/mom!!

Loving and logical post-partum advice not by a 20 year career nurse and midwife who is a mom of 4!

I wish this book had existed when our first was born!
